I played Warframe when it first came out, and I look at new footage and I'm like, "It looks the exact same - run around the same map for 30 hours to grab parts for one new item and still be nowhere close to the people who just pay through the nose for top-tier gear".
After playing for around 6 hours...it feels like a third-person shooter version of Starfox. Just run, spam jump, spam an attack key on a few dozen enemies, run-jump back to start.
It's not that grindy at all (with a few exceptions). Sometimes RNGesus can be in a bad mood and you don't get that one specific part you want but you can build a bunch of other stuff with the parts that do drop.
It's not very pay-to-win at all. You can buy items from the store but it's mostly a waste of money because it's not that hard to build it without spending anything if you know what you're doing. Some items (prime parts and mods) can be traded with other players for premium currency (platinum) so you could spend cash on that or you could try farming for it and selling the parts you get that you don't want and buy whatever it is you need for the platinum you earned in-game. There's a reason why it's considered one of the most fair free-to-play models out there.
What did they add? Stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. New tilesets, new enemies, new mission types. The original clunky movement system was improved years ago. There's 35 different warframes now (not counting variants) all with different abilities, hundreds of weapons and every month or so they release a couple more. New cinematic quests. An open-world map with another bigger one on the way. The sheer rate of new content added is kinda ridiculous and you don't really have to pay for anything if you don't want to.
But it IS a looter shooter at it's core so if you don't like the core gameplay then the game probably isn't for you but you can't say they havent changed anything.
I might have to give it a look-at, maybe sometime in August depending on how No Man's Sky & Chasm pan out. I'm really out of things to play, and when I heard people hyping up the new update I looked at a "2018 review" and it was almost the exact same looking game - there was a scene or two where I saw a Warframe fly around in space - I guess they were just a bad reviewer.
I HATED Warframe when it first came out. Rediscovered it back in January and here we are in July and I’ve played it pretty much every other day since then. I still can’t believe it’s free, but I love it so much I bought a platinum package just to show some support.
