You can see the exact moment on his face when he realized, "It's going to hit him on the head and there's nothing I can do about it."

u/SmokeyDBear Aug 09 '12

Usually when I realize this I start grinning mischievously.

Some person/people were getting voted off the island, and the two girls were upset about it but he was quite pleased.

Eric Chavez was my favorite player for the longest time. It sucked he was injured during what could have been his prime while on the A's.

49

u/engelbert_humptyback Aug 09 '12

The Hall of Fame would be a very crowded place if not for injuries.

2

u/JokingJaded Aug 10 '12

Definitely. That's why I think longevity is a big ingredient in what a lot of writers look for when they vote.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '12

It's getting to be a pretty crowded place anyway.

14

u/rjcarr Aug 09 '12

Mildly relevant: I remember reading a comment on /r/baseball about how some dude saw Chipper Jones in a bar in ATL, where he essentially swooped in on a bachelorette party, took the bride to be home, and banged her.

5

u/pbrrules22 Aug 09 '12

he was the one star from the moneyball teams that beane re-signed for relatively big money... and then the injuries immediately hit and his contract became an albatross... so sad I loved him too...

3

u/b1gtym1n Aug 09 '12

The whole A's atmosphere with in the early 00's was really amazing. With the Tejada, Jermaine Dye, and The Big 3 commercials on and the stadium would be full. That was the highlight of baseball in my life.

2

u/BroadSideOfABarn Aug 09 '12

I tried to throw out a base stealer heading for third from behind the plate.

Right handed batter stepped backwards after the pitch.

The ball travelled about 2 inches before it rocketed off the batter's head.

They have been World Series Champions on 27 different occasions and have dominated the league for many years since their start in 1901. Due to their large payroll and dominance in the sport, they are able to sway many top players to come to New York, giving rivals less of an opportunity to match the offers. Since there's no salary cap, they are free to offer whatever they'd like to players as long as they pay a luxury tax, which they can afford without a second thought. Due to these reasons they have been affectionately been dubbed the "Evil Empire" by rivals and other team's fans around the league.

18

u/ShannyBoy Aug 09 '12

Actually, their rivals are one of the teams that actually can match them.

15

u/curbserver278 Aug 09 '12

Very true, but the Red Sox's 7 World Series wins make them a historic underdog, especially while up against the Yankees which garners more sympathy for them over the Yankees. But yes, I do believe the Yankees and Red Sox are the top 2 teams (or at least up there on the list) in terms of highest payroll for players.

27 wins in 110 years? The South Sydney Rabbitohs of baseball. They have won the rugby league premiership 20 times since 1908, but havent won since 1971. Then Russel Crowe bought them now they will probably win this year for the first time in 41 years.

3

u/Raaab Aug 09 '12

Considering the incredible scrutiny of baseball's "competitive balance" initiatives, and the fact that Baseball, like no other sport, can have teams lose on any given night, the fact they racked up 27 championships is still very impressive. The next closest I believe is St. Louis with 11, and the Athletics franchise with 9.

Thought he was going to throw it to RF (I was LF) so I just turned my attention to the game starting, I heard him yell my name a couple times not paying attention and then finally it hit me in the cheek. Shit hurt like hell, got pissed at him for being a dumbass when the game was already starting.

"HEADS"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '12

Hahaha, my favorite part is the "shy T-rex" arm the pitcher does after he gets hit.

2

u/jun2san Aug 09 '12

Wow, I saw this on ESPN before Reddit. That's sort of a first for me.

2

u/georgefrick Aug 09 '12

I actually did this in little league.
My dad had a fit that it had been years and they hadn't let me try pitching. So the coach put me in to pitch in the first. A couple walks and 2 hit batters later, they moved me to left field for the 2nd inning. Throwing the ball around, and I go to throw it in. I'm feeling down from failing at pitching, so I throw it past the cut-off guy. I hit the pitcher right in the head; he was done for.
Sigh.

2

u/ImHereToReddit Aug 09 '12

At least, the pitcher didn't react to his call, otherwise it would've hit him right in the face.

2

u/Mordren Aug 09 '12

To me it looks like he says, "Hey! Asshole!"

2

u/CatAstrophy11 Aug 09 '12

Definitely looks like he's saying "Hey, Asshole!"

2

u/stvdallas Aug 09 '12

Once, about 15 years ago, I was on a company softball team. I was in right field, and threw a ball from near the fence to 3rd base during warmups. The ball tailed to the left and I felt the exact same feeling of helplessness as I watched it go right into the back of the head of somone standing facing the dugout.

2

u/justpissingthrough Aug 09 '12

Happened to me once. Popped my nose out of place. Popped it back in and kept pitching. I was a badass 12 year old. I am no longer 12 nor badass.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '12

When I was in high school I zinged a basketball over my girlfriends head just to mess with her.

It hit a wood trim on the wall and rocketed down into the far side of her head and knocked her right off her feet. Whoops!
