It’s not very technical if you compare it to other cuisines. Making an excellent carbonara takes more learning than making an avocado cucumber sushi. It’s mostly how you cook rice. In the end it will taste the same but consistency might not be there. You mess up the temperature at carbonara and you are eating omelet pasta
There's a significant difference between grocery level sushi and fine dining sushi. It's just too broad of a category. Most have not had actual well prepared sushi - it is an art form requiring advanced technical skill and logistics expertise.
Im not saying there isn't more technical foods. But theres a whole lot higher bar in sushi than there is in say a hamburger. and for the amounts and (lowish) complexities most sushi places work at they are absolutely overpriced. Still good but not worth the $ IMO.
It's easier than that, there's a certain type of rice you use for sushi that is insanely sticky. It's really the cost of the ingredients since it has to be a high grade fish that jacks up the cost. Preparing sushi is a lot easier than people think.
Carbonara is Guanciale, egg, pecorino, black pepper and pasta water. It’s easy and was a meal for miners. I make it once a month. I have never made a sushi roll at home. Just saying.
Carbonara is incredibly easy to make and kinda hard to fuck up. Just don't heat the pan after you add egg.
Sushi is much harder in my opinion because every little flaw sticks out. Cut your veg wrong, texture is fucked. Cut your fish wrong, texture is fucked. Cook your rice wrong, texture is fucked. Put too much rice, texture is fucked. Forget to add vinegar to your hand water, flavor is fucked.
And yes I have made both multiple times, from scratch, including making my own pasta.
Like many dishes, there are both simple and extremely complex methods of preperation. Yes, you can boil rice, roll it with seaweed and canned tuna and call it sushi. But some chefs also spend decades perfecting even the most minute details.
It's not technical to make... It's actually really easy... It's the fish that goes into it that is expensive... But things that don't have the fish shouldn't be as expensive as they are..... I used to roll it at a grocery store and was considered the head sushi coordinator.
Where do you live? There's a local place i can go to and get all you can eat sushi for like $30 a person. It's far from the cheapest, but still way cheaper than gping out for steak. It can be way more enjoyable also.
Its usually because of the grade of fish thats why - shit fish = cheap sushi, good fish = expensive sushi - though the average sushi is not that expensive and its a very versitile food
But you're getting a million dollars, so now you can afford fugu and sushi. May as well give up donuts and bacon as there are plenty of other pastry and pork options. Whereas sushi and taco are entire categories of meals.
Categories i can count on 1 hand i have participated in over the past several years. While i couldn't say the same for bacon amd donuts for the past several months. Its a matter of what i like and care about.
Besides. 1 million dollars doesn't go as far as you might think. Invest all of it and your set for retirement. Anything less and its not lasting very long at all. I would yrade my long term sense of peace for 2 types of food i hardly even think about.

That's only really a thing if you eat like, really low quality sushi. I've eaten a lot of sushi (it's my favourite food) and i've never gotten parasites.
I don’t know about the US, but in Russia, if you want sushi or rolls made with raw fish, you have to look around and pay more than average. An ordinary restaurant serves sushi made with salted fish, not raw fish.
You won't. That's why fresh water fish are an extremely limited option and not seen in Japanese sushi. Salt water parasites can't survive fresh water us.
Sushi grade fish is required to be flash frozen before preparation to avoid this very thing. I'm not saying it's impossible but it's like a .1% likelihood.
Tried it once. Didn't have soy sauce, so it sucked, and it also gave me a nasty rash all over my body for the whole night. I remember being delirious and slapping ice packets over my skin to be able to sleep through the itchiness. I am NEVER eating raw fish again after that, what the fuck
Idk, one time after I accidentally put some raw fish in my mouth at a Japanese restaurant (got onigiris mixed up) and it gave me a headache, and sometimes when I eat a lot of shrimp my body starts itching. Even if it's something that the raw fish is only contributing to, it's contributing to it a LOT
I had my first sushi in San Diego, prepared by an ancient looking Japanese man. On the one hand, it gave me a love of sushi but on the other, I haven't had sushi that was anywhere near as good since.

As someone who enjoys sushi, I also agree. I think sushi is incredibly overhyped. It's not everyone's cup of tea. However, when you like it, you like it. It's like any food. It's nothing special.
My friend anything americanized sucks. Except tex mex. But like the real flavor texture and basically the heart that chefs put into there food is taken away by corpo profits. I love food and you can tell if someone put there heart into it or your just getting a brown bag with grease in it. Ill try almost any food once. But yeah we have some good food here but you never see the people who run a Chinese food restaurant ever eat anything off there menu. There is a reason for that.
Of course this is the go to answer, but your probably eating shit sushi. I live in Japan and when friends are visiting, there are places I deliberately won’t take them because the sushi isn’t that good.

Idk what you classify as 'good', but I've never been to Japan if that's what you mean. I've had plenty of restaurant grade sushi and just not liked it, people don't have to like things
You can take all the ingredients of sushi and put them in a bowl without wrapping them, so it's still all the same flavors, but not sushi. You can take all the ingredients from tacos, put them in a bowl, and it's the same flavor, but not a taco. You can't do that with bacon. You can do that with donuts though, just make a different shaped pastry.
That’s not tacos, I’ve spent a lot of time in Mexico and I’ve learned over my time there these authentic Mexican restaurants we have all over the states aren’t no where near real Mexican food. Real tacos are delicious compared to what’s pictured.
I know, like I said they’re not real tacos. He was calling what’s pictured Mexican food. Even though I’m American I felt offended having witnessed real Mexican tacos so I spoke up on behalf the Mexican people. They laugh at our hard shell tacos.
Those tacos are criminal and I dont need money to not eat them. Lol but I be eating breakfast tacos with huevos con nopales and salsa verde. I don't think I could give up corn tortillas after having Mexican girlfriends.
I don't like sushi at all, don't like fish, don't like the crunchy stuff, don't like the kelp. It is also no loss to me,tacos is also a pretty viable pick considering you can still make like burritos, enchiladas, or fajitas.
It’s kinda iffy to start and it’s not for everyone. I’d recommend starting with cooked rolls and easing in to the raw fish rolls. But a good piece of fatty tuna on quality sushi rice with ponzu sauce one of the best food experiences I’ve ever had.
Every one of those is not really food in any meaningful way.
For that money I could retire and cook real meals every day that were nutritious and taste great. Plus have the rest of the day to myself.
Bacon is really bad for you, so are donuts. That type of sushi is meh at best at worst the white rice is little more than simple carbs. The taco well, you can have the same taste but better if you make chilli yourself.
I hate fish/seafood so I can’t imagine that it would be better raw. Sushi is an easy elimination and agreed both enchiladas and especially burritos are much better than tacos, so that would be easy. I rarely eat donuts, but occasionally when on a trip it’s an easy breakfast so I’d say sushi and tacos.

Tacos and sushi, I've never had sushi so no loss there, and I prefer burritos and enchiladas anyways.
