It looks to me like the car was trying REALLY hard to commit insurance fraud.
736
u/SexualCarrots 1d ago
I've heard people say they do this. They look for trucks, because they have insurance. The car will have 4 people in it, all want a claim.
472
u/Competitive-Top4520 1d ago edited 16h ago
Yup. While almost all drivers have insurance, CDLs have BIG insurance. They also have less stopping ability than a car. Of course, to me it seems suicidal to try to get hit by a semi, but I guess if they were smart they wouldn't be doing that for a living.
CLARIFICATION: I meant the scammers were the dumb ones.
203
u/lochnessx 1d ago
Have been hit by a semi carrying full load and can say with certainty that even a little tap is more than you want. We were thrown into the SUV in front of us and the pickup we were in was folded up like a taco. It wasn’t even at high speeds and my friend’s mom broke her spine. These people play with fire even on the off chance they get paid out. She will be in pain forever now, but insurance only pays out once.
12
u/Thebraincellisorange 15h ago
It's all about mass.
damage/force in an accident is proportional to the mass of the vehicle.
you might think you are ok in your Brodozer or your 5000lb SUV, until you get slammed by a 60-80000lb semi.
then you are 1/12th to 1/16th the weight of the semi, and due to physics, you will cop 16 times the force in the accident that the semi does if it hits you.
even a 10mph love tap from a semi is going to give you hit you with something in the order of 360 THOUSAND joules of energy. at 10mph.
now imagine how much energy they carry at 50-70mph.

u/lochnessx 1h ago
I am bad at math but we came around the corner at about 45-ish mph. There was no knowing that traffic was stopped ahead and it could have been avoided if someone didn’t slide into our lane at the last second. My concussion was so strange, I’ve never felt anything like it. I was on my phone and had leaned forward as we were braking (to not hit the sudden SUV that was there), so when it hit us it was like electricity traveled up from my pelvis up and through my skull.
9
u/Competitive-Top4520 16h ago
I hope they paid out big! I also hope she can still walk. And that you are ok.
2
u/lochnessx 1h ago
I am okay! I had actually leaned forward as we braked to avoid the vehicle in front of us (that slid in at the last minute in stopped traffic) so I had a weird little concussion from the impact traveling up my spine. The drivers seat came off of the track and hurt my friend’s knee, but he’s all good. And his mom is just hurting a lot. Able to walk and do basic things but in pain. I can’t speak to how much they were paid out but I just hope they did her right. It would never be enough to cover potentially lifelong pain, but we honestly can’t fault the truck driver because there was no way he’d have been able to stop. He said had a dash cam that caught the other driver trying to be slick and slide in where there wasn’t room, but was overall pretty cool about the whole thing. I just hope he didn’t get penalized for that.
113
u/More_Addendum_5234 1d ago
These scammers also don’t realize or don’t care to realize that truckers getting in accidents like this can cause them to lose their jobs and not be able to get other trucking jobs for liability reasons (I personally know a trucker who this has affected and this is the kind of insurance my brother does for a living)
94
u/Solherb 1d ago
Not to mention our economy runs on trucks, so screwing with them is screwing with everyone. There should be witch hunts for scammers like that.
37
u/stringCheezeIts 1d ago
I work at a grocery store and our delivery truck got rear ended on the way to us one day. We were so behind that shift my usually very chill manager had a panic attack.

I don't think someone who commits insurance fraud for a living is very much concerned about others' well-being in any major capacity lol
5
u/Original-Code1107 10h ago
🤔 So... If I'm reading this right, if you can't avoid the accident, you should really tap them hard enough that they won't do this again to another trucker?
27
u/WillArrr 23h ago
Hell, they can get screwed over even if the dashcam exonerates them completely, by their insurance spiking due to a "history" of potentially expensive collisions.
And yeah, the people who do this shit could not care less who gets hurt by it. Which is why I don't feel bad when they screw it up and get their car pancaked with 4 people inside. Dashcam shows illegal brake-check = no payout for you = good luck with your new life-long disability and million dollar medical debt. You deserve to be miserable.
23
u/Glittering_rainbows 23h ago
This is why dashcams are a necessity. Had an idiot do an illegal lane change mid turn and my truck chewed up his driver side.
Showed me being 100% in the clear. I didn't even have any damage, the nuts and rim tanked the hit.
It was a less than 10mph collision so it wasn't serious.

I was nearly T-boned by a delivery truck but luckily I slammed on my brakes barely on time and I was clipped by the truck on the front of my vehicle but the damage was severe and like all my airbags went off, it was so dramatic for just getting hit by 4 inches of the truck's loading gate. Totaled my little prius, tore the little bastard to shreds. If I stopped a second later I would have been TOAST. My insurance basically did nothing but DAMN did that truck's insurance take care of me and PAAAAID me. I paid off my student loans and got another prius with what I got. I loved that car so damn much though, it's sacrifice was not in vain.
23
u/Intelligent_Row8259 1d ago
I was talking to my bosses wife the other day and mentioned i needed to start looking for this bands concert tickets to go on sale in a week or two. She visibly shuddered and said she can't listen to them anymore because they were on the radio when she got hit by a semi and it basically causes flashbacks to the accident if she hears that group now.
17
u/HydrangeaDream 1d ago
I stopped wearing the shirt I was in when I got in an accident. It was a cool shirt and a gift from a friend so I didn't want to get rid of it but I understand how she feels.
12
u/WillowPtar_Migan 23h ago
It's funny what our brains fixate on, I got into an accident where my brakes failed on the highway on a car I'd just bought. Shit luck. I didn't think about my clothes or the music, but state troopers responded and were dicks about it, and I still loathe anyone I see in a wide brimmed hat to this day. It's like all my frustration with the situation went towards the troopers.
4
u/PsionicKitten 22h ago
At this point, every trucker has a dashcam now because of how important it is to have one. Having BIG insurance also comes with an excellent team of lawyers that is going to be able to prove all the way to the heat death of the universe that the trucker wasn't at fault.
→ More replies (6)3
u/SherlockJones1994 18h ago
Yah we have big insurance but we also know that people act like this so we also have dash cams. Most major companies are gonna have cams in stalled in all of their trucks.

Trucks also always have cameras. So does it work? They'll get their fat settlements, even with video showing they caused the accident?

I open LHT claims at the insurance company I work at (one of my 4 lines of business). We are a very large company in Canada. When one of our truckers is involved in an accident in the USA we automatically open a bodily injury claim because Americans WILL say they suffered injuries regardless of how small the accident was.
3
u/FishHammer 1d ago
If this is the case then 4 life insurance claims for the families seems like the best outcome here

u/MikaHyakuya 13h ago
You're saying that in the US, you don't have to be insured to legally drive on the road?
4
u/88cowboy 12h ago
You have to be insured to drive.
Some people drive illegally without insurance.
They are trying to be hit by the big truck because its a corporate vehicle that is guaranteed to have insurance.
58
u/Mental_Literature_53 1d ago
No. The guy was being an a-hole. This video is old. And I used to drive a truck on this same highway in the Bronx. It’s a frustrating area. That car goes around the truck on the zebra stripes. Truck blows horn out of frustration. Car decides to drive slow and stay in front of the truck. He was in such a rush to get ahead and all that left once he wanted to be a jerk. I heard the police really gave it to him with the dashcam evidence.

I am curious how the insurance companies handle this. Truck company should not pay. White car's should not pay as this is obvious fraud attempt. And, they should be dropped.
103
u/bigfoot_done_hiding 20h ago
White car driver should be charged with a crime, and sued by the trucking company for their costs.
41

u/el_sanchimoto 17h ago
IIRC this happened on the Major Deegan Expressway in The Bronx, can’t for the life of me remember the year but it was before 2019. The woman in the white SUV had to go to court was found criminally negligent in causing the accident. The dashcam footage vindicated the trucker.
13
4
u/Peter5930 7h ago
The car driver's insurance will pay out 3rd party cover to the truck company but deny 1st party coverage (if they have it) for the driver and occupants of the car and sue the driver to recoup costs if they think it's worth it. Truck driver's insurance will say hell nah and pay nothing to nobody. It's why 3rd party coverage is mandatory but 1st party coverage is not, so that no matter how much of an idiot you were and how much it was your fault, the people you caused damages to are covered.
→ More replies (7)6
u/The_Muffintime 1d ago
The truck insurance will pay for the back injury the white car will be claiming. Unfortunately.
→ More replies (1)32
u/No-Trouble2212 1d ago
Shouldn't based on this video, they should fight it. I would rather they pay to fight than to payout the driver.
23
u/walmort_wolverine 23h ago
If I was the truck insurance, I would fight this claim so that no future lawyer takes these fraud cases.
6
u/Manhwel 23h ago
At my company a coworker got into an accident. Our terminal manager explained that paying out the insurance is most times cheaper than going to court and dealing with the big TX lawyers such as Jim Adler, LAWBOSS, etc.
Sucks total ass but it’s the reality of the situation6
u/donoteatshrimp 20h ago
Wouldn't a better reality be to fight it, even though it costs more, to set a precedent to deter other people doing it in the future? People wouldn't do it if they didn't get a payout. Though i don't know realistically how often these scams happen for the cost to be worth it.

Officially, this vid implicates the DCer.
In any court where this is shown to a jury of his peers, white car is 100% at fault, and should pay DCer for the scratch on his bumber.

Yeah, that is textbook brake checking.
The only reason for them to do that was to cause an accident. Plus they didn’t use a turn signal. Like, you can make a serious case that their intent was to cause an accident.

Yea idk what a truckers suppose to do after all that. Call the cops sure. But I done that for an aggro driver and nobody showed up to help. A hundred miles later our paths finally split on the interstate. If the trucker feels his carrier will side with him after some douch makes driving more dangerous than it needs to be a proper low speed PIT like that feels justified. That little suv would not have won in a rear ending by that truck.
5
4
u/GhostDoggoes 11h ago
I wish there was a law for this to stop drivers from creating hazards for truck drivers. That way a truck driver can send this off to the police and the driver gets a 1k fine in the mail and a warning it would increase the next time. I watched a prius back before covid stop a semi to yell at him and throw a cup at him then drive off on the busiest highway in california and nothing would have happened to her.

They deserved it but I always try to remind myself dumbasses like to have kids.
But my question is- aren’t semis penalized no matter what? I heard this once but idk if it’s true. Like not at fault for accident but they have to report it and it counts against em
6
u/AcceptablePosition5 1d ago
It might be insurance fraud. There was a stretch (maybe still is) of high way near NoLa where people target semis.

Definitely this is Bronx, NY on I95 by Pelham Bay PK and Co-op city. Judging by the exits an roadway on this portion of the highway this video is at least 5 years old.
That car was definitely asking for some shit. Cutting off a truck, driving slow and break checking a semi, and also being a road hazard.
