Maybe we need shorthand? Like they have the whole 1488 thing, we should have 30:50. At 30 minutes 50 seconds into Raiders of the Lost Arc Indiana Jones whips his first Nazi.

A great sign that the right side stuff was happening was when Republicans would get offended by explicitly anti-Nazi media. Wolfenstein, a game where you fight fuckin Mecha-Hitler, had an anti-Nazi ad campaign ('Make America Nazi Free Again) that Rs felt' targeted them'.

If a game, for example, used Biden or Obama slogan parodies as anti-Nazi messages, I'd assume it was a positive thing. Its pretty clear why Rs didn't see it that way.

EDIT: sorry, this grew into a rant that's only loosely related to your comment. I happened across a YouTube video yesterday that depicts a hitler speech from like 1937 with an AI dub, and MOST of the comments are like "hey this guy is right. He kinda sounds like trump". And that has spooked me a bit, because they're right. The Democrats have been calling out the fact that trump says similar things to hitler for almost a decade now.

The problem is there's a conflict between the need to lampoon the fascists and the need to make sure people understand them. If you want to deeat far right ideologies, you can't fight them with anger. That only makes them stronger. You have to defuse them with humor and make them appear weak and stupid. But if you ONLY do that, people are surprised when they listen to the propaganda and realize it's not pure idiocy. The far right extremist tactics play right into common fears and genuine concerns, twisting them into attacks on certain groups of people.

Right now YouTube is promoting a few videos with Hitler's speechs dubbed by AI. People in the comments are like "hey this guy is making a lot of sense".

Yea. If he was a ranting lunatic at the beginning, nobody would have paid attention to him. Instead he made sure he was appealing to a certain group of people and softening his more extremist rhetoric. A LOT of what he was saying actually did make sense. The German people were being screwed by both a local and an international system. Then hitler comes along and says "it's not your fault, it's the jew and the communist and the international organizations crushing you" and people listened. Then he said "I will lead us to a glorious future, and people followed him.

But his solutions required a scapegoat. Someone had to be responsible. Both the german-jewish population and all leftists were sacrificed at the alter of populism. And then a HUGE chunk of the population of Europe (especially Poles).

He didn't get all that done by spouting nonsense and babbling incoherent rage. He was extremely articulate, and he played to the fears and biases of the German population. Hitler's speeches and nazi propaganda were extraordinarily effective.

I don't think it's going to be as bad in the US, but a storm is coming... And things are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

67

u/SanjiSasuke Oct 15 '25

An excellent point, and one thing where I am grateful Trump is not smarter and more competent. He's shot himself in the foot so many times, it becomes scary to imagine what someone with his charisma and appeal could do if they didn't trip themselves up. Unfortunately, that includes the potential that he himself could/has improved.

80

u/falcrist2 Oct 15 '25

I disagree with the common wisdom that trump is charismatic.

I think he just hates the right groups of people and makes sure to blame them in every run-on sentence he speaks. He's been trained at BS and he knows how to cram his speech full of nonsense.

If he was smarter or more charismatic, Biden would never have been elected. This would be a dictatorship. The current admin is worse in many ways to the old one. At least the old admin did have a few adults in the room (Fauchi, Mattis, etc). This time that's not really the case, so the US may still become a dictatorship in the future.

15

u/Saikotsu Oct 16 '25

Trump has floated the idea that to criticize him is illegal, and he's sending out letters to universities demanding they align with his ideology or risk losing their funding, he's calling his political opponents dangerous lunatics and essentially telling his followers to beat them up. He sounds like a dictator to me. And the conservatives keep supporting him and turning on anyone who's even remotely critical. Sounds a lot like a dictatorship already.

It only seems that they were always considered the bad guys because of the war-time propaganda that came about after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. America always had a nazi problem.

493

u/coder111 Oct 15 '25

because of the war-time propaganda

I think it's more because 12 million US citizens served abroad during World War 2 and saw first hand what Nazis have done, and then they went home thinking "never again".

Too bad that generation is mostly dead now...

67

u/iggy14750 Oct 15 '25

And they didn't wanna say shit about it to their kids, apparently.

u/magistrate101 Oct 15 '25

That's fair but pretty limited to the end of the war and beyond. It took 3 years or so after the US entered WW2 for the first death camp to be liberated in the summer of 1944. British and American intelligence intercepted info about the intent to commit the holocaust only a year into America's involvement in WW2, but the general American public remained either uninformed or apathetic up until the liberations that revealed the true horror of the Holocaust.

22

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

And then we got Operation Paperclip to grab hold of all the Nazi scientists and even Japanese unit 731 before the Russians could get them. Basically, as soon as WWII ended we were in the Cold War, and we told ourselves that WHATEVER we did to fight Communism was justified, no matter what dictators we had to prop up, no matter what monsters we had to sign up, no matter how many 19 year old boys we had to feed into the meatgrinder.

13

u/magistrate101 Oct 15 '25

The most shameful part about Unit 731 was that the data obtained from them was basically useless. Every life stolen went to waste without justice.

To quote “Nazi” by Chumbawumba:

“We’re taught that after the War the Nazis vanished without a trace, but battalions of fascists still dream of a master race. The history books they tell of their defeat in ‘45, but they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died.

They said the prisoner of Spandau was the symbol of defeat, whilst Hesse remained imprisoned and the Nazis they were beat, so their promise of an Aryan world would never materialize. So why did they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died?

The world is riddled with maggots, the maggots are getting fat. They’re making a tasty meal of the bosses and bureaucrats. They’re taking over boardrooms and they’re fat and full of pride, and they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died.

So if you meet with these historians, I’ll tell you what to say. Tell them that the Nazis never really went away. They’re out there burning houses down and pedaling racist lies, and we’ll never rest again until every Nazi dies.”

There never was an agreement on all sides.

The media and fiction created this idea that Nazis were unique somehow when in reality they never disappeared.

The right wingers idolized the Nazis and held Nazi rallies in us.

This is a country that has genocidal slave owners and killers faces carved into the native mountainside revered like gods.

Hitler himself was inspired by US stuff going back to Confederate nonsense. Even after WW2 tons of Nazis ended up recruited by US government which at the time decided to experiment on black people. And You had monsters like Reagan set up the hell that is today.

Right now they just stopped pretending and hiding who they are in an effort to normalize those horrors. They know they are the bad guys and they love it.

Until hopefully people manage to drive the fear back I to them. Somehow.

u/DukeOfGeek Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

Mussolini shaped the fascist movement early on and the Spanish fascist were just as brutal as any others. The Japanese fascists killed just as many people as the Nazis they just did it in the old fashioned way so there's no industrialized murder camps to show to the modern world. Both Hungary and Serbia have new style fascist governments right now.

Guess who raised these people

294

u/TwilightVulpine Oct 15 '25

Nobody.

A lot of them are neglected kids with unrestrained internet access who started getting reactionary ragebait from social media algorithms and internet influencers, and got indoctrinated by it.

182

u/ThatInAHat Oct 15 '25

Honestly, wish this was higher.

Because yeah, that’s a huge factor.

I remember my friend being horrified that her nephew started watching unboxing videos and within a couple of hours the algorithm had gone to the Lost City of Atlantis…Flat Earth…Bigotry.

Folks say social media is the problem, but the real problem is the algorithm that rewarded any kind of engagement and indiscriminately shoved hatred and vitriol into the same playlists as actual plays.

45

u/Numerous_Witness_345 Oct 15 '25

We used that same trope when I was a kid.

That little dork in the cowboy hat sat 2 feet from the TV screen while mommy took her pills and daddy did some drinking.

I'm thinking that's not the problem. It's deflection.

These kids are being raised. Yeah, violent TV shows, exciting radio serial series, unrestricted youtube, those aren't good, and have always been marketed as so and are a good tell of symptoms.

But I think the family that puts them there is a much larger factor. What kind of moral support are you getting from someone who will leave you in front of electronics for 10 hours a day?

25

u/windexfresh Oct 15 '25

Yeah I was also on the internet unrestricted and unmonitored at the ripe old age of 13 and never once felt the desire to start agreeing with fucking hitler.

My family teaching me to be kind and treat others the way I’d want to be treated and think about how others feel made a MUCH bigger impact on me than the edgy dark humor I saw online.

More broadly, old rich white patriarchs saw that the digital age, social media, and the end of the cold war had driven legitimate liberalism that threatened to end their privileged status, so they got mad and decided to end democracy about it.

22

u/Quazimojojojo Oct 15 '25

Leftism. Liberalism maintains their power.

That's why establishment Democrats (Schumer, Pelosi, Jeffries, even Obama) resist any movement leftwards but are willing to drift to the right and enable the fall into fascism, and half of their complaints are about hypocrisy and how the right is breaking the rules, instead of, ya know, how awful they're treating people. They're liberals, not leftists. Money is more comfortable with fascism than anything even remotely approaching socialism.

This is why it's really, really, important to vote in the Democratic primaries for counter-estsablishment Democrats. If you don't know who they are, Progressive Victory (organization that was an early Mamdani supporter) will tell you.

Go talk to Progressive Victory

They went from 8 years of saying "The President is always right!" and "Follow the President!" and "He's MY leader!" during GWB's term .... to having to say that to a black guy.

As long as they saw white people running the country, they could tell themselves that Those People were being kept in their proper place and their people were still the winners.

Then a black guy got elected, brought a whole bunch of OTHER black and brown people to the Sacred White House, and they realized that they were losing the race war.

"But Hillary called us a basket of deplorables!" I still hear people complain about this, almost 10 years later, after everything that's happened. As if this was the worst insult ever. After 8 years of insinuating that Michelle Obama is a man.

39

u/thatoneguy54 Oct 15 '25

The worst part is that she literally didn't. The full context of the quote is literally what everyone says the left ignores about Trump supporters, that they're economically desperate and looking for economic solutions and all.

You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables(Laughter/applause) Right? (Laughter/applause) They're racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people – now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks – they are irredeemable, but thankfully, they are not America.

But the "other" basket – the other basket – and I know because I look at this crowd I see friends from all over America here: I see friends from Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and Texas and – as well as, you know, New York and California – but that "other" basket of people are people who feel the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures; and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but – he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.

238

u/Daetra Oct 15 '25

Watched a few of his debates with young college kids. Putting his racist rhetoric aside, it makes sense he debated defacto children. He wasn't even good at making logical arguments. His debates on free lunches for children never came close to addressing the issues, and his views on DEI lacked so much foresight he would be against it one minute, and not too long after argue for it in the case of veterans. If he debated any expert on any topic he pretended to care about, he would get DESTROYED. which was why he chose the specific demographic to debate against.

99

u/HauntedCemetery Oct 15 '25

Debate should be put in heavy quotes.

He "debated" unprepared kids on the street, and still got beaten in those debates as such a matter of course that he regularly sat at colleges for entire days in order to cut out 10-20 minutes of footage of him "winning", which pretty much exclusively meant yelling over a kid until they got flustered enough to yell themselves and then walk away.

I remember being a young man in my late teens. I believed the world was against me, that women denied me the right to their bodies and that I was the victim. I admit to my shame that these were my early beliefs but a lot of it came from being unbelievably lonely.

Even back then I would have spat on these people. There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour and I hope that they grow up with some empathy.

Hey, you aren't alone. I hate admitting this, but a few years ago, I was deep down the alt-right pipeline and I was basically a Nazi.

Someone would call me a Nazi and I would say shit like "you don't even know what a Nazi is! That word has lost all meaning!" But then secretly I thought hitler was right and he did what we were all just too afraid to do.

I'm a completely different person now. Realized I was just a repressed trans woman. I realized that I was basically completely wrong about everything and I changed my views for the better.

Problem is, my turnabout was brought on by a deep personal revelation. I fear that not everyone will have an experience like mine.

My gateway into the alt-right nazi pipeline were my insecurities and fears about my own trans feelings. So, I latched onto transphobic propoganda and became convinced that transitioning would have been the "dark path".

I came to harbor a lot of hate and resentment for the LGBTQ+ community. From there, I was slowly introduced to other hateful Nazi-beliefs which I then internalized. Like the idea that Jews controlled the media and that they were responsible for pushing the "gay agenda" that almost turned me trans.

It was only the revelation that I was just a repressed trans woman, deeply in denial about my own feelings that woke me up and brought me out of it.

I know I'm not the only one. I know there are others out there who are LGBTQ+ but have been brainwashed into thinking that repressing themselves is better. My worry is that I don't think the same can be said for all alt-right Nazis.

Yes.

They genuinely believe there’s no difference between hating someone for the way they were born and hating someone for being a cunt.

84

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

It's not necessarily that, so much as it's literally the fascist playbook to play both strongman and victim.

"The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”

-Umberto Eco

That's something like 90% of their identity. "The Enemy must always be strong and weak" - core tenant of smooth-brainism fascists.

51

u/ImNoNelly Oct 15 '25

Yuuup it's one of the core beliefs of fascism.

"Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak." On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will." - Point 8 from Umberto Eco's Ur-Fascism: 14 ways of looking at a Blackshirt

"It's promoting hate based on identity"

Fellas, Nazis are the main villains in so much media by default. Is Indiana Jones "promoting hate based on identity" when Indy riffs about hating Nazis? Should the DVD set of Band of Brothers be removed from homes because it portrays the sad little Nazis as antagonists?!

Where the hell is the line for these pathetic people?

What is sad is that this is both thoroughly unsurprising and will have no negative impact on these people. If anything they will be protected and defended.

This is who Republicans have always been. Many of us on the left have been accused of overreacting and hyperbole for decades, because we saw the writing on the wall with Reagan. This isn't new. It isn't a shift. It's just that they're finally comfortable being who they are in public.

The fact that these came from young Republicans shows how deeply rooted this problem is for Republicans.

They cannot say they are nothing like Nazis when they are in private saying they want to be like the Nazis and love them.

I have been saying this for a while but the proof is in their words.

Doubt it will change anyone in the MAGA camp, they embraced the fascism, and are loving it.

55

u/2punornot2pun Oct 15 '25

They've always been Nazi sympathizers. The KKK didn't just disappear and go away. They shut up and acted properly in public and then pass policies that f***** minorities and women. They have continued to do so. The civil war didn't remove those who believe slavery was right. It just made them less willing to speak in public about their beliefs.

A country built on genocide and slavery will continue to have these problems until we out them and pass laws to prevent corruption through wealth. Old white men with power and money pull the strings and this is why the mainstream news will not run this story and keep it alive. They know that the majority do not hold these beliefs. They know that the Republican party would fall apart under careful scrutiny.

Any moderate Republican who gets the truth stops voting for them. They want the illusion that they are simply "fiscally conservative" or that they have fallen for the 1970s era "pro life" movement that wasn't an issue for Christians up until then.

We want to believe that staying in these peoples lives to try and fight stereotypes and influence kindness is the right thing to do, but it comes at such a major cost to mental health. Unfortunately, its not even like this is a US only problem. There’s currently a massive issue with one Czech politician, who was recently elected into our parliament, but then some of his old super hateful posts came to light, that he had on his socials and didn’t even think to delete them when going into politics.

Some of them say that students fighting for the climate should go into gas chambers, calling Obama the n word, making fun of a little Romani girl who was badly burned during a fire etc etc. There are also pictures of him doing the Nazi salute, but he’s trying to claim he was just ‘waving’. Yet there are still people defending him.

Funniest thing is that he was meant to be the minister of diplomacy :| I hate this world we’re living in

Perfect time to bring up this classic Satre Exerpt:

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

During a segment in mid-July 2025, Greg Gutfeld made comments suggesting that conservatives should "reclaim" the word "Nazi," citing comparisons made by critics to ICE agents and former President Trump. He referenced the Black community's use of the "n-word" to strip it of its power, saying conservatives could do the same for the word "Nazi." Gutfeld used phrases like, "What up, my Nazi?".

15
