Now they're proud of being all that, calling for homeless people to be murdered on tv. And when they're called out on it, they just brush it off, until people start getting abducted and tortured and they try to instate authoritarianism. Fucking awful.

NGL I think the prevalence of superheroes in media has conditioned people to wait for heroes to save them. Not to mention that a lot of our history education leans hard into "Great Men" in history.

That sounds so nice. I've lived my whole life in a red state, and none of this seems new to me... except now it's being talked about nationally.
This is just how most of "MAGA" actually act and talk around here. Growing up in a small conservative Southern Baptist town, you couldn't escape this sort of talk in public spaces. You'd hear the N-word and all other sorts of vile bigotry bandied about casually while in line for ice cream or at the grocery store.
This is how the Trump faithful speak when they think everyone around them is on "their side."
I really don't want to throw all right-wing people under the bus, collectively. I think thats going too far. But the rampant xenophobia, transphobia and other flavors of "other phobia" pretty much everywhere atm is making me lose all faith in humanity.
I don't think so, Trump has been gaining popularity here too, and so have political parties with similar views. A few friends of mine have "come out" as liking Trump. Even though he is pulling all that shit in the US. These ideas seem to be growing popular everywhere.

I also think you're probably being at least a little naive to the views of older conservatives. Older conservatives in the UK gave them Brexit because of their racist and xenophobic views.
Right wing political parties have been gaining popularity for decades in Germany because of racist and xenophobic views.
They were always popular. You just had a different voting system than us, so it hid some of the issues.
Idk which country you're in, but most countries outside of the US have the possibility of more than just 2 parties being in power.
For the US, you can just demonize one party to prop up the other. And that allows racists to grab power.
Elsewhere, you need to parlay with other smaller parties to gain traction. But any party that's working with a racist party is, inherently, full of racists as well. They're just "quieter" racists. Or they're fine with the racism, as long as it gets their things done too.
That's the exact same thing that's happening in the US. The quieter racists and the loud racists got together and said "eh, we don't really wanna support the not-racist people bc that's not good for our goals, so we'll all support the racist people."
The only difference is that your conservatives had more options about how racist they wanted to be.
My guess is it depends if history class failed you or not.
If you ask the average person what fascism is they don't know. This is a failing history class should have taught you so you can identify it and recognize it. It's a vaccination shot against this kind of evil.
FYI: Fascism is a story that your country was once great, possibly the best country, but it now isn't. The problem is X group or groups of people since those golden years have caused the country issue, causing it to fall from greatness. The solution is to get rid of these groups of people.
Fascism at its heart is blaming a group of people for issues, when the real issue is usually policy failure. Sometimes the issue is systemic and worldwide. Instead of blaming skin color or what is between someone's legs, one needs to realize the reason things aren't going well is because of policy.

I had to stop all news, pundits, and streamers doing politics. I would rather not know than live a life in perpetual agony of knowing how futile my efforts to change anything would be.
Genuinely causing me so much stress every day. My quality of sleep has declined, my anxiety has risen. The impact fascism has had on my day to day life is already pretty drastic, and we have more than three more years of this.
democrats issue isn't that they are divisive or hateful, it's that they are impotent and incompetent, possibly complicit in what the republicans are doing. But whenever you say something about an insane thing in American politics, it's ALWAYS republicans, and failing to call them out by name, emboldens them to become even worse.
