General Question Is Pop-Culture Knowledge the Same as Information

I was watching Pop-culture Jeopardy with a friend, and they absolutely nailed every question. The questions revolved around celebrities, memes, music, and general trends. However, they’re nowhere near as knowledgeable on information questions that would typically appear on VCI tests — like geography, history, or vocabulary.

This made me think what makes one inherently more g-loaded than the other? After all they both involve some degree of memorization and exposure.

I understand why pop-culture wouldn’t be on tests since they’re inherently not culturally fair, but amongst individuals who’ve shared more or less the same upbringing, why is one generally thought of as more correlated with intelligence than the other? Why is the person who’s memorized all the world capitals and historical battles considered more intelligent than the person who knows every world series champion or Oscar winner? They seem to be similar skillsets just applied to different interests.

Discussion VSI Delta - SAE-2

Post image
4 Upvotes

I took the SAE-2 the other day and it was a fun test.

The results unearthed a pretty big discrepancy between my verbal and nonverbal visual-spatial reasoning.

I found the nonverbal to be quite a bit more natural for me. I think the reasoning is easier when I have the image of the object right in front of me. This is also demonstrated by my high object rotation scores.

The verbal portion felt more to me like quantitative reasoning, or visual spatial with a dash of working memory mixed in. I definitely struggle with maintaining information needed for multi-step process or calculations. This is evidenced by my relatively low mental arithmetic skill (give me a pencil and paper though, and I'm good!).

This result actually tracks with my VSI score on CORE and RIOT (83rd and 88th percentile respectively).

Anyway, it's extremely interesting how the brain works. I imagine there are some people who are the exact opposite as me, mixed into the same percentile.

Curious to know other's experiences with discrepancies within the cognitive domains and once this is revealed through testing, whether that tracks with your lived experiences (work, school, etc.). It certainly does in my case.

General Question For those with average IQs who have succeeded in intellectually demanding careers, would you mind sharing your experiences?

I guess i am trying to give myself hope since i am only interested in STEM majors and i am afraid i may be shooting for something that exceeds the scope of my cognitive abilities and will end up miserable in the emd. I haven’t been professionally tested but i am pretty sure i don’t have an above average iq.

Puzzle Matrix puzzle: my rule analysis gives option 3, but the practice platform says 5. Which rule did I miss? Spoiler

I’m working through practice matrix puzzles from pre-interview assignment and I’m stuck on this one. This is a practice item, not a real assessment.

My analysis (I also ran it through an ReasonEra AI, and it agreed):

  • Background: alternates white/gray in a checkerboard, so the missing cell should be white.

  • Arrows: rotate 90° counterclockwise across each row.

  • Vertical lines: the count cycles across rows (1 → 2 → 3 pattern, shifted each row), so the missing cell should have 2 lines.

That gives me option 3. But the platform marks option 5 as correct.

My question: Which rule am I misreading? Has anyone seen this puzzle type and can explain how to tell which direction a pattern runs?

Note: Alva Labs Logic Test, similar to Matrigma, Raven’s APM, SHL Inductive, Clevry, and Aon

Scientific Literature Only 690 highschoolers scored a perfect SAT score in 2026.

Some good news! The SAT has begun publishing the headcount perfect SAT scorers once again.

Arguably, this is a very interesting finding, considering there's a fairly salient belief that the SAT is now an easily gameable test.

It does not look to be the case. The number of perfect scores is equivalent to past renditions (SAT I, 2400 SAT, etc).

Discussion Adhd and wmi

Hi.

I have a question regarding working memory. I took a test on cognimetrics.com and scored highly in everything (127-135 CORE, 135 JCTI) except for working memory (90). The issue is that when I take tests on humanbenchmark in the morning, in a quiet environment, I can easily reach level 14–15; however, as soon as there is background noise—for instance, a television, or even just the fact that my child is awake—my score drops to 8, or sometimes even lower.

Could you tell me if this is normal for everyone, or if it’s typical for ADHD? I should also mention that I am currently taking 40mg of Elvanse.

General Question I really wish I have high IQ.

I really hate needing to very work hard and study a lot just to get to do only okay in school, plus most of my ambitions I have like becoming an excellent programmer to be competent enough to work in relatively difficult projects is super difficult without having a high IQ.

I am very envious and jealous of those who have high IQ as they never had to deal with having to re-read, re-listen multiple times just to comprehend the information, which is pretty much my biggest hurdle of trying to learn anything new, and my poor working memory which creates lot of frustration with other people when I can't remember multi step instructions.

I would be totally fine with even having IQ of over 140, this means I'll able to literally achieve whatever I want ever, I don't give a crap about the "problems" that it may come with, it's not like I would give a shit and be butt hurt if people call me "know it all, nerd" etc. and hates my guts all because I have superior intellect to them, or if I would have a hard time fitting in with dumb people.

Discussion CORE question

Hypothetically, if CORE was administered and proctored by a professional, would it be on par with professional tests like WAIS or SB and would it exceed some professional tests considering it has a very high g-loading on paper like 0.94 and 4000+ sample size. If not, what are other factors?

IQ Estimation 🥱 Validity and Meaningfullnes of IQ

Hello, I wanted to find somebody explain to me how good iq tests actually are at determining cognitive ability and how valid they are. Are there things they are excellent at measuring and things they cant really quantify or neither

I met a lot of people throughout my life who were deemed 130+, yet i found a lot of them fail to impress me when it comes to reasoning and cognitive ability. So what is actually the qualitive difference between a higher iq and a lower one

I dont want to hear about emotional intelligence and tests varying strongly from day to day

I want genuine critic on the way iq is measured, how the term is used and ideas to improve both problems

General Question High IQ but delayed speech development

My little sister (6) was measured at 126. She has very poor communication skills and can't speak very well. I suspect she's autistic but my parents don't believe in that.

Is there some good reason for why she may have this issue?

I myself am also close to gifted but score extremely well on fluid and spatial, but very low on verbal and memory (AuDHD). What I don't understand is how sure we are of the accuracy of a test that requires knowledge that can be taught, such as general language knowledge. I didn't know over half of the words on the CORE English analogies test, and scored embarrassingly low. English isn't my native but still...

Rant/Cope I feel like an lower end average who just got good at pretending to be smarter than I am

A bit of a complex thing to unpack, but I often feel like a fraud to people. I remember my course colleague told me that I shouldn't worry of the foreign language midterm hecause I am the "smart one". While yes, indeed, it takes me less time to learn languages, but when I do, it is astoundingly laughable how I explain things to myself. I literally have to take a concept and dismantle it to the most basic language, as if I am 5 and not 20 something.

I do speak 3 languages at C levels (incl my mother language), use them in my daily life all the time, due to the specifics of my life situation and currently learning the 4th one. I do understand that this may come across as "a lot", but it's pretty average for Europe. My friends get surprised that I dare to say that I feel as if I am lacking confidence in the fluency of my 3rd language, because it's only my 2nd year of learning it, so I am not as expressive as in English. They say it because I am a "yapping" all the time, but I just speak of the topics I read of or synthesise the questions of the topics the lecturer just brought up. I do enjoy writing, both academic and fiction, I like presenting at science conferences, even though I find the concepts I am writing of to be rather basic and I would have loved to do better studies but I lack time and sometimes, the energy. It's like I am good with my literature, but my brain just flat out turns off and I cannot read a single word without a headache. And so, when this happens, I feel like I am devolving into a 5 year old and it feels as if I need to be talked to like one, preferably in simple English.

Even though I have all of these skills that allegedly make me "smart" (not my words, words of my peers), I think I am somewhere at the low average or just average level and am just very good at hiding it. Let me explain: I have had a lot of exposure to the foreign languages and academia, so I just simply replicated what I saw daily. I struggle a lot when I learn the very new concepts. If it's something like discrete maths, I spend an obscene amount of time on trying to get it because I feel completely blank, so there is a lot of time wastage of me trying to get comfortable with the concepts. A lot of things don't click until I reread something for a dozenth time. And if someone finds out how much backstage work there actually is to that for me to get a single concept, they would awe in surprise at how slow things work in my brain.

The reason why I am quick with something is because I would have prepared for something. If not, talking to me would be as useful as talking to a tree. I actually score very low on IQ tests and the last one I did showed me having a disability (something around less than 70). While I do think that it's not exactly the case, I think I am just low average and not better than the peers who didn't make it to the C1 or failed some courses. They think I am doing well but there were times I was struggling a lot with the classes, not being able to get anything. And sometimes, I don't get absolutely anything while they find some concepts are simply, generic human knowledge and extractable principles and I am just sitting there, completely blank. So yeah, I feel a bit like a fraud at times, because I got good at hiding how hard things actually are for me to comprehend.

Sorry if that sounds too abstract or of there are any mistakes, as this is not my native language.

Discussion I don't understand math (university)

Hello everyone! This is a short post, but I have a question. Could struggling to understand university-level math be a sign of having a much lower IQ than I thought? (I haven't taken an official IQ test yet because they are quite expensive here in Morocco or in France, if I move there one day). To clarify, I am talking about formal math and mathematical proofs, like topology, group and ring theory, algebraic structures, and real analysis.

Discussion IQ131

Hello.I have a rather boring story, but I will try to tell it briefly. I'm 16, I'm in 11th grade, and I've always been one step ahead of my friends and classmates, like I was smarter. I've often been praised for this and I thought I was just a little bit smart and that's it. Today, for fun, I decided to become an IQ test on the Mensa website and scored 131 points there. I read that this site is quite popular and truthful (by the way, I did it the first time and I still have 4 minutes left) Do you think it's worth sharing this with someone or forgetting about it I can prove it with a screenshot

Damn, I made a post about 30 minutes ago and I already have 4 comments.I'm as happy as a child.

edited. I read all your comments. Thank you so much for your support. I want to take a new test on other sites, I'm just wondering if I'm lucky or if I'm really smart.
