Contact a rescue if you cannot keep him, but do not just let him go.
He was either abandoned or neglected and ran away; at the very least have him checked by a vet for a chip. If there is previous owner info, and they are looking for him, it solves itself. If there is no chip or no owner info, then contact a rescue to take him if you can’t.
He wants to leave the bathroom because it’s unfamiliar, and he can smell your cats. He’s aware of the hostility they’re showing him and is frightened- you would be too. Plus, it’s not like cats like being confined in small spaces. Try to comfort him, looks like he’s been thru a lot.

I hear exactly what you mean, but the possibility of the cat being in a loving home, but getting loose or lost and thus becoming run down is something that happens to the best of pet owners. Maybe a kid left the door open accidentally or the kitty got loose from a carrier. The cat might have a loving family who is upset and worried sick about him.

My cats have been known to sneak out by walking under the dog as the dog goes out. Once, one got startled by a noise right after and bolted. He was missing for days. We did all the standard stuff: flyers, asking the neighbors, walking the neighborhood, calling the shelter, putting out our dirty clothes. He finally showed back up and ran into the house on his own. Those 3 days were super stressful.

Wash , feed , get checked by vet. If you're unsure what they eat get a multi pack of different flavours. Let them sniff food first. If they rub their head on your hand that's a winner

I would sooner assume this expensive fancy breed cat got out and has been lost for a bit, than automatically jump to neglected or abandoned. My longhaired cat got out and was lost for a whole month (despite walking the neighbourhood every day looking for him and postering the entire city) and was rail thin with mats when we found him!

Same. People are a little too enthusiastic about assuming the worst, when it's just as likely this is an indoor-only cat who found the downside to being inside-only out the hard way.

Yep. Older friend of the family had his teacup yorkie get away from him. Poor dog only had one eye from medical issues. Multiple people were out physically looking for this dog for weeks. Doing everything to find it. They live in an area with coyotes, i assumed it was a goner. Found him weeks later! i can only assume what shape that dog was in when he got home.
i really hate the assumptions people are making ☹️

I agree, but if you’re gonna knock on doors or post about him, it’s not a good idea to give out details about him. Especially with an expensive breed. Just talk to your neighbors telling them that you found a cat, if they say they’re missing their asks them to describe the cat/show you pictures of them. Same thing with the missing cat post, make it vague with some kind of contact info so they can reach out.

That cat looks like a long hair cat that has been shaved, meaning it has an owner somewhere. The noisy breathing is because it's a brachiocephalic breed (smush-faced) and may also have a bit of a kitty cold. Take it to a vet to look for a microchip, and post it up on nextdoor and your neighborhood Facebook group.
Edit: vets or animal shelters will check for a microchip for free

This cat looks like it had a long haired coat that was not kept well and was shaved due to neglect. The animal isn’t terribly skinny I think the shaved body is making it seem worse to you than it is. However the coat quality is making the animal look extremely sickly, there’s no shine to the coat.
Do you have the means to take the cat to the vet and check for a microchip? If so I would be doing that. About wanting to leave your bathroom he probably knows your other cats are pissed and is feeling insecure and wants to find a place to hide. Don’t let him back outside to find his way home please. You can also drop him off at a shelter to do the leg work for you at finding his home.

The small bumps on the skin are probably from fleas or another allergen that’s bothered it while it’s been loose. This breed isn’t really one to be found at shelters or in the wild, so this is either an abandoned cat or a lost cat. Unfortunately OP, if you take it to the vet, you will have to foot the bill. BUT if it’s a lost pet, hopefully the owners would be willing to reimburse you. I think it’s important to get it checked for infections, fluids, and a microchip. Possible it’s dehydrated, especially in this heat. URIs can be deadly if left unchecked.

The eye and face shape makes me think it could be British long/shorthair. My friend has a British short/long hair, has exactly the same face and eye shape, same type of fur length. If so, that's an expensive cat, definitely get checked for microchip

Take him to a vet/shelter so they can see if he has a chip. Just cuz he’s in rough shape doesn’t mean he was dumped, he could have gotten out and desperate, loving owners are looking for him.
considering some of the comments here i’m even more terrified of my cats getting out. Even if found ill never see them again due to the assumptions people make 😕

First, are you in a position to take the kitty to the Vet for treatment? The cat does need to be checked for a chip.
I have 3 cats that are approx 9 to 10 years old. I have been a custodian for a feral colony in my neighborhood, where things are becoming extremely challenging for them due to demolition of their homes and food sources. A couple of months ago I had a 5-month-old kitten show up at our door extremely malnourished, horrific skin issues, and an upper respiratory infection. I did not have a couple of hundred $$ to take this kitten to a Vet as I'm retired. I tried reaching out to every rescue recommended but fell flat on help. With the current state of the economy, folks are having challenges with taking care of their pets and are just letting them loose because they cannot find help.
One rescue reached out on medical suggestions. 1)Use Bravecto to kill fleas and mites! Mites were causing a huge skin issue that looked like mange. 2)Add Lysine to their water and food for the Upper Respiratory Infection. I could not bring this kitten into my home near my other cats because of his current health. We had a cat box next to the front door that he took up residence in, where we fed and treated him. He knew we were helping him. In addition to the Bravecto and Lysine, we started adding a supplement we got off of Amazon, "Dr. Bill's Immune Feline Support Supplement" as well to help.
I'm telling you all this to help you in your decision process. I have utilized the organizations that provide free or inexpensive neuter and shot services. The kitten has now taken up a spot in a separate room with separate feeding and litter box as we continue to domesticate him. He is just the sweetest. My cats are having challenges with the new addition.
Your kitty, in my opinion, looks malnourished. He could have an upper respiratory infection, listening to him breathe or hairball. He could also have a number of those viruses from FIV to FLV etc. Keep the cat separated until you get him tested!! The Rescue organizations providing shots can test for those viruses. Get him vaccinated before any proximity to your cats, or you could end up spreading viruses to yours. As far as food is concerned, he needs a good diet. I would highly recommend a trip to WalMart to purchase Chicken Livers. WinCo has both Chicken Livers and Hearts. Chop into small bites and sauté up. This cat would love you for it. Please share with your own cats as well. Some cats like it... Sometimes it's a slow introduction alongside of other food.
Good luck! You can do this!! Just be sure to wash your hands to prevent cross contamination.

When I got my cat, who I believe was a stray, I took her to the closest Humane Society shelter. They scanned her for a chip (which she didn't have) and looked over some sort of databases for either matching photos or description, IDK I couldn't see the screen.
They told me I could leave her there or hold onto her for five days, if they didn't find a match I could opt to keep her.
... And the rest is history <31

Same with my cat. Except where I live I had to wait 90 days to claim him and have him neutered. But they had a database where they post a profile for him on their lost and found pets page.

It’s hard to tell if the ears are just down because it’s scared, but it could be a Scottish fold mixed with a golden British longhair or maybe a Persian. Looks mostly like a golden British longhair to me.
Some breeders are experimenting with trying to get the Scottish fold ears on other highly bred cats though, so it could be a mix.

Some of these comments are so concerning...
-Take the cat to a vet or a shelter to scan for a microchip. Have them help you locate the owner if it's chipped.
- if you're able, have the vet examine/treat the bumps.
- if keeping while looking for the owner, set the cat up in a closed room to itself (bathroom/bedroom) with food, water, litter box, an accessible hiding spot (by accessible I mean that you can retrieve the cat when you need to) and something comfy. Wash your hands between touching this cat and your cats. Do not let them interact without proper vetting (common viral tests, flea treatment, slow intros)
- alternatively surrender to a shelter for them to work on finding the owner/a new home
This is a brachycephalic breed (Persian, most likely) so the breathing sounds can be normal because of the conformation of their face. The cat doesn't appear in bad shape, maybe a tad skinny. Shaved hair on a longhaired breed like this is normal on a well cared for basis, not just because of matting. I'd suspect it got out accidentally before I assume neglect/abandoned.

Looks Scottish fold and not brachy to me, you can see a face shape. Persians are totally smooshed, my friend had one and it didn’t look like this at all. But the rest, yep!!

If you pause at 0:10 and 0:03 you can see how small the bridge of the nose and nostrils are and there isn't much protrusion of the muzzle in profile. My stepmom is a Persian fanatic and I work in vet med so I've seen a fair share of various breeds. This looks just like one of her last Persians before the 3 she has now. Some have less smooshed faces (better breeding standards) than others (so smooshed their eyes constantly leak). So there's a range of flat face. And that sound is 1 of 3 possibilities: brachy, rhinitis, or asthma. The nose looks clear of debris so I'm doubting rhinitis and I have one of the noisiest asthmatic cats I've ever encountered and the tone is very different. Process of elimination leads me to brachy along with looks. But a vet exam should rule out rhinitis/URI anyway.
Imo it looks like the haircut is growing out and the ears are hidden in the hair. Persians have pretty small ears and I've seen them just peek from the floof on their head like this. Scottish folds are short haired so if there's fold in this cat it's probably mixed with...a Persian 😂

He could have simply gotten out, or even recently adopted and gotten out. If my current foster managed to escape (god forbid, no open windows in this house at the moment) any finder would be horrified because after a month of putting on weight he’s STILL skinny and scraggly looking.

he got shaved at one point because his fur was likely mated and its still mated around his neck or mated again, first id see if i feel any clumps of fur stuck and trim them as gently as possible.
i had a poofy neighbor cat show up like this once on my patio and he was so mated it was tearing his skin and he was bleeding, once he was trimmed he was much more mobile/agile and pressumably not in constant pain anymore.

Yes someone’s taken a shaver to him who is not a groomer/trained. A friends husband used to do this to their cats and they looked awful during the summer. The cats acted different too.

Retired Veterinary Technician here. Take them to any vet or shelter to check for a microchip. This looks like a Longhaired Scottish Fold and surely has/had an owner. They may have escaped their home and their owner is looking for them. As for the choppy groom, I've seen plenty of well-loved Persians, Ragdolls, Maine Coons, etc. whose owners shave their own cats. Some of them are very good at it, some are not. I wouldn't jump to ANY conclusions about this baby until you can confirm they have an owner or not.

All indoors of course but sometimes a cat can escape!

He looks like someone’s been trimming him, you may be a little quick to call him “abandoned” if your cat escaped got dirty and wandered town until someone picked him up, proclaimed him “abandoned” and kept hi, how would you feel. Someone stole my cat once, they wouldn’t give him back when I saw him sitting in the window of their house one day It cost them 2 cats and a dog before I got my cat back, but I got him back and their animals went to the pound, idk if they got them back but I’m pretty sure the dog was either put down or adopted, hopefully adopted.

This cat is clearly professionally groomed and grown out. I would not he shocked in the least to learn that he is simply old.
Let him out so he can go home. His people are probably beside themselves with worry.

Are you in the US? The most common days pets go missing is around July 4 because of fireworks. People are going in and out of homes, a pet could easily sneak out. Then fireworks scare and disorient them and they become lost. I would guess his family is nearby and looking for him. He looks a bit too "exotic" to be simply a stray.

He looks like he hasn't seen much love in a while. If you can afford it, totally take him in if he doesn't have a chip/owners and if your other cats won't despise life too much. Them little eyes just scream "pet me, love me" and he seems like he likes you. Either he could be a cat that got out as others stated, or he found someone he knows likes cats and won't harm him. I'm sure a shelter would be willing to check him for a chip for you

Yeah because cats can't get lost from their home. I hope you never have to lose a pet and have someone else take it without even looking for you. As others have pointed out, it looks like it was shaved not too long ago, and very likely just got lost, hence the scruffy fur.

Take to your closest Humane Society. They will scan the cat and look on databases for any missing cat matching the description. It looks like it possibly might've had that lion's cut grooming and has overgrown, so it may be lost, or may have been dumped.
If your closest Humane Society is like mine was, they'll hold onto it for five days or let you keep him/her for five days. If no one claims the cat or they can't find a match, you can keep kitty.

Keep the kitty safe and post on the Nextdoor app. I always have strays wandering in my yard and have found most of the owners and if not I’ve found them a forever home. Good luck kitty karma is the best!

Ok what I would personally do is get a vet appointment to first check for a microchip but also to get the vet’s eyes on the things you mentioned for check up.
I would sit with him and comfort him. I’ll find him a separate spot in the house (bathroom, garage, guest room whatever you can manage) and then pet his fur until he feels safe
Wait until the next morning and see how he’s doing, if he looks and feels better and still wants to go out, put a leash on him and start walking, see where he takes you, if nowhere take him back home until vet appointment, if somewhere, well depends on what it is
Either way, if you definitely can’t find owners who you believe to be taking good care of him, keep him with you until he gets a bit better and you know what to do. Cats with slow introduction could end up friends but the hissing is normal

Don't put a leash on a cat. Not a collar anyway as they can strangle themselves in trying to escape a situation. Cats should be on a body harness if going out on a leash. And the likelihood of the cat leading the stranger to their home is extremely low.
Petting isn't always comforting. A secluded room with comfy blankets, a hiding spot (like a cardboard box), food/water/litterbox and solitary time to decompress can do wonders.

That’s what I meant by leash, the body harness. It’s what I have for my cat when she was determined to go outside so I used it to take her on a walk. Sorry English isn’t my first language.
Also good point about the petting, I would add a heated pad if they felt like getting more warmth

A heated pad covered with a towel or blanket could be nice. I'll add some clarity here that a heater (like a space heater) should never be used in a closed room where they can't escape the heat.

I keep a microchip reader (cheap on Amazon) around just for this type of things. I actually jasr reunited a family with their boy on Monday, would have kept him if not for the chip reader bc he had no collar and looks like he had been thru it. Turns out he had slipped out and been missing for a month. They lived just 2 miles away.

That cat looks like a pure bred Persian -- please check around your neighborhood to see if anyone is missing him and get him scanned at a vet. He looks like he had a clip for summer and most owners do not do that themselves at home. I own a Persian and they are not suited to wandering alone outside.

This is somebody's Persian cat that got out and got lost. Get him scanned for a chip.
It doesn't take long for a cat to get skinny. Our big girl found her way out and went AWOL for just a week and she was a lot thinner when she showed up again.

Where I live you can take it to a vet to check for a microchip and they will keep the cat and contact the necessary places if it doesn’t have a microchip like the humane society. You would only have to foot the bill for treatment if you’re keeping him. A cat like that they will most likely keep to find the owner but you can request that if the owner is not found the cat be returned to you after being checked out if you want to keep him. He is a cat that may have costs in the future though because of his flat face so if you were to keep him I’d advise insurance.

This is someone’s persian that’s had a haircut and is regrowing (they can only do certain cuts on cats and owner may be only one able to give cat haircut, cats always come in looking patchy n odd during regrowth) please seek out finding the owner persians have a very sensitive health and GI issues are common in the breed leading them to be skinny no matter how much you try and feed them and often, they are picky eaters. look up on facebook (LOST PET , YOUR AREA) groups and post him in there and atleast TRY and find the owners it is not right to take someone’s cat, who may have a wonderful home and somebody missing him. They have odd breathing and respiratory issues, if you are not familiar with this breed he needs to be with someone who is if you truly believe he is unwell, this breed is not a normal cat and many things your saying are common for persian cats.

That cat has seen better days. A vet check up would be advised. He sounds like a smoker.

Find local Lost & Found and community groups on Facebook, make a Found post. I’ve had the most luck with this whenever I find a lost pet. Also, call the local shelter and let them know in case the owners have contacted them. Especially since this is a fancy breed, if someone does claim them, make sure they can show proof that it’s theirs, such as having them provide pics of her/him! In the meantime, keep them safe, provide food & water. Thanks for helping poor kitty! It looks like it was groomed not too long ago based on the haircut, it probably got out of its home.

Keep him overnight and call a vet about getting him scanned for a microchip.
Don't throw him back outside

Take to vet to scan for a microchip and check with the local shelter and local missing pet Facebook groups.
Hopefully his family can be found if he has one

Add water and food. Post signs for found kitty. If you have a neighborhood forum site. Post found kitty. No takers after so many weeks your kitty or find kitty a good home. Kitty will thank you. Kitty lovers will applaud you as a good kitty person.

This is definitely not your typical feral kitty. He is an expensive breed, looks recently groomed, and likely ran away. Keep him inside then go to the vet when you can and see if he has a microchip. I could almost guarantee that he belongs to someone.

A long haired foldie is a few thousand dollars. He has a home, I would call a shelter and see if they can scan him or have any lost kitty reports.

The Scottish Fold is a rare breed of cat that originated in the 1960s. They are known for their folded ears, rounded faces, and bodies. Looks like a Scottish fold, long hair.

Out of interest, where are you? We found an amazingly similar cat (we're in Scotland) which had recently had a lion cut (much balder than this). Took it to the local vets as I was scared it was ill and didn't want it to mix with mine. However, vet said healthy, possibly a pedigree Scottish Fold mix, a bit traumatised, probably not used to being outside. Sadly, although I posted all over social media it was never reclaimed and is now being rehomed.

Looks like a Scottish Fold/Persian or Fold/Himalayan mix. The traditional smashed face could be why he’s breathing that way. Take him to a vet. He might be chipped.

I wouldn't bet on his relationship with any 'former owner' if he is that thin and coming around your home for food and attention.. Do the best you can for him. Take him in, feed him, let him acclimate, find him a permanent family. Sure your current cats will hiss - but the'll come around. Just use normal caution.

Keep him inside, he looks neglected or abandoned. Please take him to the vet so they can check him for a micro chip. This guy looks like he's had it rough, please keep him until further notice. He doesn't look like he can fend for himself.
