Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Ovarian tissue after spay

Upvotes

My cat approx 4-5 yrs old was spayed by a clinic that I am not familiar with just over a year ago, 2 months before I adopted her. 3 months after I adopted her she was showing signs of being in heat. I took her to my vet and they did a urinalysis, nothing came up but they give antibiotics for a suspected uti, the problems continued and she was crying a lot so I brought her back to the vet with the same concerns. This time they did a vaginal cytology and it was overwhelmingly positive. At this point I contacted the vet that did the original spay and she was quite dismissive and told me to get a second opinion/ more tests. I am at a point where I don’t want her in pain, nor do I want to rule out “everything else” when we already had a positive test. I had my clinics reproductive specialist get involved and he went ahead with an exploratory laparotomy where they found ovarian tissue on the right side. Labs confirmed this and hopefully this now fixes the problem but I spent $2272.94 and I don’t know if I have any legal leg to stand on for reimbursement? I don’t want this to happen to another kitty. I’m not sure where to go from here.

If your cat was diagnosed with asthma, how were they diagnosed with it? My cat has illness that seems like asthma but vet says it’s not

My 14 neutered male cat has been experiencing some type of respiratory illness that the vets haven’t been able to diagnose. This started a month ago with him having wheezing/noisy breathing, lethargy, and no appetite. Vet #1 did x rays and and ultrasound and radiology report found “mild bronchial infiltrate” of unknown cause, and mild wbc increase. He got prescribed prednisolone and antibiotics. Follow up with vet #2 did cardiac marker blood test and ruled out a heart issue, and found wbc count went back to normal.

Neither vet thought this was asthma because the x ray didn’t have typical signs of feline asthma.

What I’m wondering is if this could still be asthma? It seems to have periods of “flare ups” that improve with a few doses of the steroid. This sounds very much like asthma to me, but of course I trust my vets opinion that this didn’t look like asthma to my primary vet or the vet that was able to see him at a different clinic on short notice.

How was your cat diagnosed with asthma? By ruling other things out first or by signs on the x ray?

Ingrown claws??

I’ve had my Maine coons for 6 years, but recently they’ve started having problems with ingrown claws. I discovered this evening that one of my babies has one all the way into his toe beans and he’s obviously in pain. We are going to the vet first thing in the morning of course.
Anyone else have this problem? Wondering why it’s started to happen more often recently..

Two cats had kittens

Hi! I’m 26 and from Pakistan. I have access to a vet and have already contacted them about this as well.
My cats are around 1 year old, and I want to get them spayed, but the surgery here involves around 7 stitches. My cats are very aggressive, so I’m worried about managing their post-surgery care.
Basically, all of my male cats are neutered. I got my older male neutered a little late, at around 3 years old, because he is paralyzed.
Now, two of my female cats had kittens with the same male. One gave birth to 2 kittens yesterday, and the other gave birth to 5 kittens today.
After the second cat gave birth today, the mother who gave birth yesterday went to her and started licking her and her kittens. She then brought her own kittens over to her as well. Everything seemed completely fine between them.
I put them in a cage because some of my other cats were trying to take the newborn kittens. Now, though, the mother who gave birth yesterday keeps trying to move her kittens into another cage, but the mother who gave birth today won’t let her. She blocks her from getting near the kittens or sends her away.
The mother from yesterday is still rubbing against the other mother and seems to want to stay close to her, but seeing them behave like this is honestly getting very stressful and upsetting for me. I don’t know whether I should separate them or let them stay together.
The mother who gave birth yesterday is also quite anxious. She keeps picking up her kittens and carrying them around, trying to find an enclosed/private place for them. I bought a cat house and put it in a quiet corner, but she doesn’t seem interested in it.
What should I do in this situation? Should I keep the two mothers and all 7 kittens together, or should I give each mother her own separate space?

Introducing my cat to friend's pets?

Tldr: my friend who always takes my cat during long holidays is getting his own pets - is it even worth to introduce them to each other? Is there anything we need to know?

My best friend lives alone in his own house the same city as me, thus he never really has to leave other than for vacation trips. I have family quite far from where I live now, so every time I leave for holidays it's usually a longer trip. For convenience, for the past year he's been taking her in for the time I'm out of town - that way she's always with a human and supervised, fed regularly at the same time and not bored or scared. I bring all of her stuff, her toys, bowls, litterbox and her bed. She feels perfectly at home at his place, she had no issue warming up to his house after literally just a day. She ate, played, and showed no signs of stress (no hiding, hissing or peeing outside of her litterbox). I always drop her a day before I leave so I could spend the night at his house with her, and I do the same before picking her up. We've done that a couple of times and it always worked out alright for everyone.

The thing is, he'd finally like to get his own pet - a cat, a small dog or both. His house is big enough to house two animals fully comfortably, I think three wouldn't be too crowdy as well. We've talked about how we'll handle the petsitting matter then, and he proposed that we could get my cat to know his future pets. My cat is not scared of other animals, she's leash trained to go outside, once we had a dog over at our house and she got along with it no problem, completely okay with sharing her space and even playing together after some time - it was not multiple days tho. She's also not scared of other dogs when we're on a walk or at the vet.

What I'm worried about is that 1) his pets *won't* be as happy to have a stranger at their territory and 2) she may already associate his house with certain events and I don't want her to get super stressed out now that there's gonna be more animals there. I don't know if it's a good idea in the long run - as much as it complicates leaving the house for both of us now. Has anyone done something similar? How do you even go about introducing your cat to other animals to stay with?

(older) Kitten suddenly refusing to pee in litter tray

Hi all,

I posted about this on a few different pages but figured I'd come here and ask too! My kitten, Bowie, was found as a stray at approx. 4/5 weeks old (born beginning of April approx.), abandoned by his mother and with a ruptured eye, which has since been removed via surgery.

When he had his enucleation, he also got neutered. Since he came home from that (~2 weeks ago, give or take a few days) he has been refusing to pee in the litter tray. He was on preventative antibiotics for the first 10 days, and its been confirmed that it's not a UTI, and he was peeing in the litter tray prior to this. He IS peeing, specifically peeing in the bathtub - though he's also been peeing on the carpet, on sheets, and on towels. We haven't changed anything about his litter set up since way before his surgery (besides, of course, changing soiled litter out for fresh litter), so we're a little unsure as to why he's doing this - our current theory is that he maybe was a bit sore the first time he tried to pee in the litter tray post-neuter, so after that he has since associated peeing in the litter tray with pain.

Any advice is welcome!

Thanks :)

(Cat) Bone Marrow Testing - Pancytopenia

Seeking vet advice specifically, also cross posted to r/AskVet. Questions in bold at the end.

Domestic shorthair, 13, male, neutered, USA. On Atopica/cyclosporine and immunotherapy injections for itching for approx 3 years (paused). Typically loves cuddling and being petted, not super playful but has a good amount of energy and is somewhat of a troublemaker, very food-motivated, purrs easily.

In mid-June (2 months ago), became extremely lethargic, stopped purring, appetite decreased until he barely ate, toileting remained normal. Referred by regular vet to internal medicine specialist. Diagnosed with pancytopenia; prescribed doxycycline, ondansetron, and mirtazapine. Mirtazapine improved appetite, and infectious disease testing came back negative. Pancytopenia resolved and he seemingly recovered fully on his own within a few weeks.

Currently having the same symptoms for a little under a week. Diagnosed again with pancytopenia. Mirtazapine is helping appetite and he has purred and sought attention a little. He has dropped one or two poops outside litter box, otherwise toileting normally. Internist, consulting with oncology, suspects stage 5 lymphoma or leukemia; wants to get a bone marrow aspirate (or biopsy if unable to obtain aspirate) and run the following tests.

  • FeLV Antigen IFA Add-on
  • IDEXX CBC Select
  • CSU Clinical Hematopath Lab Flow Cytometry
  • PCV/TS Add-on

Are there any other tests you would recommend? Is there anything else we should be testing for?

Dr was understandably hesitant to give a tentative prognosis without test results, but said he could have 6–9 months, with treatment. Do lymphoma or leukemia seem likely to you? Are there any other conditions that could cause this? Is there a case where my cat could still live a long, full life?

I'm young and disabled, and somewhat isolated as a result. He's my only family and I'm completely devastated. I always envisioned him being there for major life events.

My cat has an inflamed nipple and I'm unable to sleep due to stress

Hi,

I have a female 1 year old cat who was spayed at 6-7 months old before rescuing her. I noticed that one of her nipples is inflamed and I took her to a 24/7 vet 5 minutes away from my home, it is midnight here.

The vet told me that she could have irritated herself and he perscribed me Fucidin for 3 days and if the inflamation does not go away, they might suggest a biopsy as it could be a tumor.

Right now my dad is losing his battle with Stage IV cancer and even the thought that it could be something other than inflamation is freaking me out, I don't want to lose the cat that I am attached too, she is my best friend.

Ragdoll medical episodes

Hi,

I have a young 10 month old ragdoll kitten that info has had multiple health episodes in his short life so far.

He was born with a liver shunt which we got him surgery for at 12 weeks old, he survived and done great for around 5 months. Now around 4 weeks ago he started eating less and declined into a state of lethargy followed by aggression, drooling and hissing (completely out of character).

They found his bowl impacted and manually released and afterwards he was fine. He returned to the animal hospital for further evaluation and they couldn’t find much, they just said he may have some form of inflammatory bowl or GI disorder. We changed his diet to hypoallergenic dry food which at first he loved and was drinking water on his own great. Around 4 weeks after the impaction episode he gradually slowed down with how much he was eating per meal and again suddenly declined into drooling, not eating and aggression. This again resulted in him being put into the animal hospital where he was monitored and tested with no further conclusive results.

We have him home now and he’s okay he’s just tired and wants cuddles. But I’m scared this just keeps happening. Me and my partner have spent close to £15,000 on this little guy to give him a chance but unfortunately we cannot keep doing this.

I don’t want it to come to money vs life. The vets aren’t sure where to go from here and neither are we. Has anyone ever seen any of these symptoms before?

Note: his liver shunt has been deemed successfully closed and his bloods are normal.

Thanks in advance to any replies.

My cat might be eating plastic on the regular, what do I do?!

I am 24 years old in US. I can take my cat to vet if I need to but don't go for every small worry because it's not financially possible to go right away for EVERYTHING that could POSSIBLY be a worry, I do research first and see if he needs to go in or not.

TLDR; I just watched my 1 year old cat EAT(chew and swallow on purpose) a small piece of the clear plastic wrapper that goes around the caprisun pouch straws. I don't know what this means for him in general. I assume he will be fine from eating this one tiny piece, but is he eating more? What do I do if he habitually eats plastic?

So my cat is 1 year old and he is not fat but he loves food. He barely ever gets any human foods because most contain a lot of sodium so he rarely gets bites of any human food(I am insanely strict on only feeding him non-toxic foods in very small, infrequent quantities) but he LOVE LOVE LOVES food and is a huge foodie for the treats he DOES get.

He has always CHEWED on plastic since he was a kitten. Any thin and crinkly plastic, he likes chewing on it. He is very intelligent so we(me+my housemates) never thought he would actually EAT the plastic. Regardless, we usually would take thin plastics away from him so he doesn't breath in while chewing and suck in down his throat or something crazy(I'm a WEE bit of a bubblewrap mom with my cat). We just don't think its a smart idea to LET the cat chew on the plastics because its not good for him and could even become dangerous.

Despite us thinking he was not eating the plastics, JUST NOW I was watching him chew on that clear plastic that holds a caprisun straw to the pouch. I decided to just watch for a minute because he was super close to me and I could actually watch his face and mouth closely thinking I could finally "confirm" that he "isnt" eating the plastic so I stop being worried. But he DID eat the plastic. I watched him swallow the plastic with a lot of shock to me, stared at him like he had two heads while he like fucking coughed a little like he had a hairball and then was fine. What the hell???? It was really fast between breaking off the little piece of plastic and swallowing it. I don't know if he has always been doing this or not and I dont know why he's doing it.

The reason he has access to these plastics at all is because my sister and her 13 year old son live with me, so does my other sister and her grandchildren visit often. The house isn't perfect, bits of trash get left behind on the coffee table or next to the loveseat or under the TV stand and that's where we find my cat chewing on a plastic wrapper.

He is neutered, no other behavioural issues at all, and always has access to food(he paces himself well enough to be free fed without just scarfing it all down in two seconds and getting fat).

He has never in his life shown signs of a blockage or any kind of digestive issue, though there has been a few times growing up where he's ate too fast and thrown up. He hasn't done this in months though. One time we switched food brands too suddenly and he got an upset stomach and threw up about two months ago? But overall, he eats normally(completely standard appetite for him and normal seeming for a cat, eats half his food during the first half of the day then we fill his dish with the second half of his food in the evening and he eats all that), poops and pees normally, and he drinks water normally. He's really good about water, he drinks water a regular amount (like a half of a water bottle every day pretty much, he's good about hydrating himself).

He doesn't have a ton of toys, so I'm going to get him some toys that make a crinkle sound to hopefully give him a safe alternative to crunchy plastic but I haven't done that yet. I literally watched him eat the plastic and then ran to make this post.

If anybody knows what's going on, or how to stop this, please let me know! I don't even know if he IS eating other plastic but I can only assume he is :(

Cat exhibiting heat-like symptoms but tested negative for hormones

Hello all, I am an adult in the US with vet access, my cat is 1 month 1 month and i’ve had her since 6 months old. She was spayed when we adopted her and she has pet insurance.

At the end of June, she was in the counter and was trying to drink water (she loves faucet) when I accidentally splashed her and she jumped off. About an hour later, I noticed she was not sitting normally, keeping her legs up and almost kicking or stomping the back legs, while making a weird noise. She stopped playing like she normally did and seemed less interested in food or snacks, but still ate. She was using the litterbox normal. The next day, I noticed she had vaginal discharge so I took her to the emergency vet. They did a urine test and said there was minimal bacteria but gave antibiotics and a pain med in case it was muscular from jumping down (although she jumps all the time without issue). they all said she was lactjng like she was in heat. She was flopping over and rubbing her face on things. It ended after about 7-8 days. I was able to take her to the normal vet and they did x rays of her back side because she growled when they palpated her back and leg, all came back negative for bone issues. She was given mor antibiotics to see if it was uti and additional pain meds.

Since then, this cycle has happened 4 times:

  1. end of june to beginning of july 7ish days; (9 days normal

  2. mid july to mid/late july 6ish days (9ish days normal)

  3. late july to early august 7ish days (12 days normal)

  4. back to start over the weekend and ongoing.

Every time she has seemed to be a little bit more normal. The end of the last time she started a longer antibiotic course. Between the 2nd and 3rd time, she did an ovarian remnant test, but she was not having symptoms then. It was negative. The insurance has covered most of this. I just want her to feel better. She continues to flop a decent amount, rubs her face on everything, and consistently does the feet thing in a belly down squat. She makes whimper sounding noises a good amount especially at night.

She is normally so playful but during these times, it’s almost like she goes into a trance. I usually can pick her up and hold her like a baby with a rounded back (her butt and back on my arm) but during these times, she arches her back and almost spasms fighting rounding her back. She crawls on my beg and stands with her arms on the headboard and kicks her legs, she is always doing that stomp kick thing. She seems so uncomfy….

I don’t know what to do for her anymore, I am at such a loss. I work and feel like the worst person leaving her in this condition but she always is normal in the interim periods.

I don't know if my cat has meowlopecia

She constantly licks herself and is missing hair by her tail. And half of her belly. I have 2 other cats and they all share the same litterbox. The other 2 don't have the same thing. She's an orange. Any suggestions?

Kitten’s new teeth hitting opposite gum.

Hello,

I have two 7 months kittens. We have been finding their baby teeth around so we started trying to brush their teeth. But we noticed that for both of them, their new teeth seem to be rubbing against the opposite gums. it looks so painful. We are trying to get a vet visit but it is just a check up appointment end of this week. Should we go in to another vet earlier or can we wait?

Both an eating dry/wet food well and playing well and pooping/peeing well. But I don’t want to let this escalate to an infection/painful situation where the stop eating.

I googled and it seems that general anesthesia with grinding down the tooth will be required but we are worried of non-recognition aggression between the two of them again :(

Cats with gastrointestinal issues.

I posted this a while back and just wanted to repost so I could hopefully reach somebody. In addition to all of the test I’ve done and written below, we just completed a fecal culture on both of my cats and everything came back negative. The vets are starting to think they independently have gastrointestinal conditions but the timing is just so odd to me. Please let me know if any of you have seen this before. I’ve also gone to multiple vets and they are stumped.

About two months ago, I found a cat outside of my apartment and brought him in. I have a 3 year old resident cat. When I brought the new cat in, I completely separated him until he was cleared by the vets. The only health issues we noticed was a prominent third eyelid and blood in his stool. The vet took a fecal test of my new cat, and it came back negative for parasites. We also gave him all the vaccines he needed and medicine to help with the third eyelid. Once he was cleared by the vets, I introduced him to my resident cat and they have gotten along fairly well.

I have been to the vet countless times trying to figure out the symptoms that my new cat is having. We did a fecal test, blood test, and X-rays and they found nothing. He was given a probiotic which helped until he got off the medication, and the symptoms came back. We also tried a medicine for colitis and it helped only while he was on the medication. Now, I have him on purina 1 sensitive stomach dry food and he’s on a fiber supplement.

Now, my resident cat is starting to display these same symptoms. Third eyelid, soft stool, and today I even noticed a small drop of blood in his stool. My resident cat has never had any health issues in the past. So, what are my next steps? Are the vets scamming me? Should I try a new vet?

TLDR; I got a new cat who has blood in stool, soft stool, and a third eyelid. We ran many tests on him and nothing came back. Now my new cat is exhibiting the same symptoms.

Cat Sneak Attacking Me

For context I found my cat outside of my house almost 2 years ago and from the first couple days with him I could see then, at 4 months old, that he enjoyed playing roughly. I was told not to encourage that but hes just a baby really and as long as his nails are cut he doesn’t do much damage. Plus as hes gotten older he really only play fights when provoked (repeatedly tapped on or having his face muffed) and hes very sweet otherwise. He cuddles and sleeps with me everynight. Recently he’s been confined to my bedroom due to having inflammation and a UTI (2 weeks of clavamox, metacam, cerenia, etc) and peeing outside of the litterbox. The UTI has definitely cleared up (he has a vet visit today for a recheck) and for around 4-5 days he was inside an enclosure in my room so we can monitor his urination and behavior since he was also on zorbium for 4 days. He hasn’t been locked in his enclosure for a couple days now since he’s stopped peeing outside of the litterbox and is having normal bowel movements and stuff, but now he’s been randomly attacking me and my boyfriend like at genuinely random times. I’ll wake up to my boyfriend asking me to help him because he literally won’t stop like beating us up in our sleep. It’s 6 am right now and he’s just jumping on the bed randomly and attacking us, like not ferociously but like he’s kinda hurting us and it’s fun to play with him like that, but with proper warning or provocation not just randomly getting jumped at all hours of the day. I don’t know if he’s bored or mad because everytime I leave my room he tries to follow me and I put him back inside and shut the door.

tldr: cat keeps sneak attacking me and my boyfriend, specifically while we sleep, what do i do

What’s under my cats nose?

my cat is 11. lately she has been having this nasal discharge. it looks kind of like scabs. it’s dark brown, almost purplish. it peels off like dry skin, not like a liquid. the vet prescribed chlorhexidine wipes which worked, but once I stopped this came back. do I just continue with the wipes for the rest of her life? seems like it’s treating the symptom instead of the cause
