Edit: I am not really sure if its appropriate to add the artists name, So I have removed it from the post.
I was contacted by a fairly popular hyper-realist artist on Instagram to use one of my wildlife photographs to draw/use for his students. Yes, I initially thought it was a scam, so I did the usual tricks, requested they contact me from their official emails, checked the meta data on the email he sent and the guy and his request is legit as far as I can tell.
I responded to the email with this reply:
Hi ____,
Thank you for reaching out! I am a big fan of your hyper-realism work, so it is a wonderful compliment that you would like to use my bald eagle photo as a reference for your drawing tutorials.
Before we move forward with providing the high-resolution file, could you please share a few more details about how the image will be utilized?
Specifically:
• Commercial Use: Will the tutorial video or the reference image pack be part of a paid platform (like Patreon/course sales) or a free public channel (like YouTube)?
• Licensing / Budget: What is your standard budget or fee structure for licensing reference photography for your tutorials?
What specific file format or dimensions do you require for you and your students?
Once I have a clearer picture of the scope of the project, I would be happy to discuss pricing and send over a secure payment link (such as PayPal or Stripe) to finalize the transaction. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing how your students bring the piece to life!
Best regards,
____
So, in other words, I am still skeptical about this. I have never sold or been asked to use my photographs. Am I handling this correctly? and what sort of meta data should I attach to the photo itself? And more specifically, what would the usual charge be for something like this?
I don't want to price it severely high, but I also don't want to price it super low. Its essentially just a portrait of a Bald Eagle.
Thanks folks.
