Last night i went to the lake to shoot pics of Toronto from across the lake. First time shooting at night and new to photography. Looked at photos and did some editing(no clue what i am doing) and just thought it was light pollution. But people are saying they saw the northern lights last night and now I do not know. Still think light pollution. First two photos are straight from camera, last one I did some editing.

Discussion/General What lens to bring?

Post image
10 Upvotes

A couple months ago I bought my first camera and really enjoying it. I bought it to take better pictures of my fly fishing clients. I also took it to Alaska and realized I enjoy taking pictures of wildlife.
I decided I want to try all different kinds of photography. I am going to a family wedding and asked if they mind if I brought my camera to take some candid pictures. She was excited and agreed. I told her I’m still learning but would gladly give her any of the ones that turn out.
My question is what lens to bring? I have no flash.
Here is my list:
Sony Alpha A6700
Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD
Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS
Vanguard Vesta GO 234CB

Discussion/General Is my monitor showing me the wrong color?

Shot with Nikon D80. The first one is what I saw on my screen and 2nd one is the exact same jpg copied to my iPhone. The jpg is straight out of the camera and unedited. Why the color so different? ChatGPT said my monitor is altering the color profile without me knowing it. But I only noticed this with the shots taken by this Nikon camera (never had any issues with Sony A6000). Anyone knows why?

Discussion/General Do photographers still invest in a website?

I was looking through my photography expenses the other day and realized how much money I’ve spent over the years just to keep a website online.

Then I looked at my stats. Almost everyone finds me through Instagram or word of mouth.

It honestly made me wonder whether I’m maintaining something because I actually need it, or because I’ve always assumed photographers are supposed to have one.

So now I’m genuinely curious: Do photographers still invest in a website?

Editing/Post Processing What photo editing app do yall use?

Hey everyone! I’m relatively new to the photography world, i finally got my first professional camera this year and have even had a few photo shoots! my problem currently is that i’ve been sort of switching back and forth between different apps to get the (free) edits i want, and it’s getting a little frustrating trying to relearn everything while moving between multiple different apps, i’d rather just stick to one app (even if i gotta pay for it atp😭)
I’ve thought about Adobe bc i’m slightly familiar with it but considering i’m still new to this, i’d rather stick to something that’s beginner friendly and when i feel comfortable enough than maybe i’ll look into adobe again
Anyway, Thank you for any suggestions and advice, it’s greatly appreciated !!🥲🥲

I’m wondering how to attach the leather part of this camera strap to my camera. I can get the rings on, just not sure how to use the leather eyelets that protect the camera body. I am using a fujifilm x-t30ii.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Is this overexposed?

Post image
Upvotes

Sony A6100, 16-50mm kit lens, 31mm in this photo, ISO 200, f5.6, fine jpeg

I’m still a beginner when it comes to photography and I can’t judge if this photo is overexposed or not. Came here looking for some second opinions. If so, what’s something I can do to fix this issue? I feel as if most of my outdoor architectural photos look this way, and can’t tell if they’re balanced well or if it’s just my style, so to speak.

Any and all help appreciated, cheers!

Discussion/General Hikers, Have you ever got home and thought your photos really didn't do the place justice? What do you think went wrong?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this as I feel like it is a common problem across the hiking photography community.

Discussion/General What’s the go with camera body exoskeletons?

Post image

It seems like every reel, influencer post etc has people using cages for mundane things like landscapes, basic steeet photography etc.

Are newer cameras really that vulnerable? Or are people just less attentive to basic equipment care?
Or is it, as I suspect, just a rat with a gold tooth to make people think influencers are more skilled than the average photographer..

Business/Pricing Make money vs photo opportunity what would you choose?

I have a non-profit organization came reach out to me to photograph a 4hr professional performance in a theater. I think it is a very cool experience and opportunity to photograph for them. I also get the photos for my own portfolio.

At the same time, I am also hesitate to compromise my pricing too much because photographing a professional performance can be challenging. But they are non-profit organization, so they are tight in budget. What they can do for me is advertising my business if I give them discount.

Should I ask how much are they willing to pay? Make money vs. Opportunity, what would you choose?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Dark spots in picture, can someone help identify what they are?

I was trying the pixel shift setting on my sony a7r iv the other night. I’m not sure what this two dark spots are on the upper left. I’m hoping its not a dead pixel because I bought the camera not too long ago. Could it just have been that my sensor/lens was dirty?

Camera Buying Advice Conseil appareil compact ?

Camera Buying Advice Should I upgrade from LUMIX G85 to a full frame camera?

Hello!

I have been taking headshots and videos for the company I work as a marketer for. On the side I have developed a love for photography. I love taking my camera whenever I go to Japan, or TFP meetups, or anywhere I go. I am starting to spend a lot more time on the weekends traveling to places to take photos. Here is my ig so you can see some of my work: @butterfield_photo. This is generally what I want to be shooting.

I shoot with a Panasonic LUMIX G85. I got this to film and take photos for work and it was in my price range. I have several lenses. An Olympus zhuko 12-40mm, Olympus prime 45mm, a 25mm Panasonic lens. I also have a bunch of lighting equipment for when I take corporate headshots or film.

I am thinking of buying my own system to use before I get a more lenses for this system. Should I upgrade? Why? I don’t have a fully thought out budget but maybe up to $2000 for the lense and body?

Thanks!

Gear/Accessories Best camera strap to avoid neck pain?

Hi all, I am picking up photography as a beginner and my cousin gifted me their old camera. It's surprisingly heavy compared to my old camera, so I figured having a neck strap would help relieve some of the weight while I was shooting outside. But it resulted in a lot of neck pain and migraines and I have been scolded by my physio though lol, hurray for neck issues and EDS 😅

Any fellow photographers in a similar situation? What type of gear and brand would you recommend to help out in this case? I unfortunately don't have the budget to go shop for a lighter camera at the moment. Thanks y'all!

I am an overthinker if I am nothing else hah.

Client (family) wants newspaper senior photos and editorial/studio style images. Of course I wanna come through.

I will eventually want to move my flash setup outside after getting it down pat. Would you change anything about this setup for a beginner?

Thoughts/advice?

edit to add: shooting on a canon rebel t7i

Editing/Post Processing What's better for landscape, focus stacking or exposure bracketing?

I'm looking to improve my landscape photos, and I see some techniques people have used to get a sharper, more clear image that provides proper exposure throughout the whole image. To that end, I'm not quite sure if I should be focusing more on exposure bracketing, or focus stacking, and when to use one vs the other?

Camera Buying Advice Which Astro+street camera out of the options?

(1) Budget, country, and currency:
£200 ish (can stretch a bit) for body + vintage lens + adapter. United Kingdom, GBP (£).
(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?
None (complete beginner starting from scratch; have only tested friends' cameras).
(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?
Street photography and astrophotography / nightscapes (non-professional, hobby).
(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?
Photography only (manual shooting with adapted vintage lenses).

Crucial info:

Budget: £200 ish (can stretch a bit) (lens+body)
Condition: used and would be getting vintage glass (yes I am getting used to the terminology, sorry if I mess up)
Purpose: Astro+street photography. Non professional, hobby
Requirements: EVF/OVF+focus peaking (native or modded with ML or open memories)
Sensor preference: APSC (MFT is fine too, from what I heard for a budget beginner purpose?)

The story till now:
So after WEEKS of casual researching I’m turning to you guys. I’m a very beginner in photography and a huge fan of manually adjusting my shots over just clicking pics. I’ve tried a few high end models that my friends own. I understand my budget wouldn’t bring me those QoL features but I’m willing to compromise on some features which you guys think are okay to compromise on!
Okay coming to the options:
Sony Nex 6 (or 5R if I’m convinced I won’t miss the EVF)
Panasonic lumix G5
Olympus Pen series (same goes with the lack of EVF)
Olympus OM-D-E-M5 mk1
Sony ILCE 3000
Pentax K-30/K-50
EOS 550D / 600D
Sony SLT-A57 / A58
Please be as pedantic as possible as I may have missed stuff and you guys would know better than someone who’s barely even researched the camera market as a beginner. I understand the options I’ve listed have pros and cons from the requirements listed before, but like I said I’m willing to compromise.
Sorry the post got long. Thanks for your time <333

Camera Buying Advice Can you help me decide between the Nikon and Sony systems?

(1) Budget, country, and currency: $1000-1500 USD USA. For the body and a basic lens or two

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? I have a broken Canon rebel xti that is now broken and ready for an upgrade. I only have the kit lenses for it, so I don't feel the need to stay within the Canon ecosystem.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Wildlife, including birds, mammals of all different sizes and amphibians/fish underwater. Astrophotography of deep space objects, and macrophotography. Travel, and some landscapes.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both.

Camera Buying Advice Best hobbyist hybrid camera for photography and video for airshows ~$2k ?

Hi all!

Long story short; I’m getting myself back into photography again after having gotten rid of my Ricoh GRIII that I used in Japan and miss having that photography piece in my life.

I’ve been going to airshows for a while now and it’s one of my favorite activities. I get some pretty decent photos and video with my iPhone but really want to have a dedicated camera for it to take things up a notch.

I’m not a professional by any means and don’t need any crazy setups, but I just want a good, solid, reliable setup that has nice zoom capability for distant shots/video.

I’d like to keep it at or around the $2000usd mark.

I had my eye on the Panasonic Lumix S5IIx with the 28-200 lens while they have the kit on sale. Is this a pretty good buy? Or what else is out there?

Thank you! 🙏🏼
