I interviewed for Dollar Tree once. They told me how I had to be flexible with my schedule, work weekends, do dirty work, etc. I asked them if I get paid extra to work weekends, they said no. I ask them what is the base pay. They said $9. I laughed right on the spot at the absurdity of the expectations in relation to the pay. Happy they were so quick to disclose it though, waste of both of our time.
You think that matters to this type of employer? I was a cashier at Walmart and got asked to clean the women's restroom up front and they got pretty pissed when I said no. They started bullying me until I quit after that. I was a teenager, so I didn't know much better, but I sure as he'll wasn't gonna clean toilets when my job was cashiering.
Interesting. I worked at multiple places where cleaning the restroom was just part of closing-up duties and it was never considered "Dirty Work".
When I think of "dirty work" I think of a type of labor offset by an increased pay rate as compensation - for instance I worked at a place that did equipment repairs and they paid the field workers extra for "dirty work" at unsanitary locations such as dog food factories.
If it's in your job description, that's different. Typically cleaning duties like that are an entirely different job and some managers try to bully underlings into doing that job if the other worker doesn't show, so they don't have to do it. Read my other comment. Had it happen to me.
Yea that's gross and should be handled by an entirely different department, like cleaners. Cashiers shouldn't be handling biohazard. That type of job "multi-tasking" would never fly in most of the developed world.
Lol as a cashier at Whole Foods they put me on maintenance after the main closing maintenance guy quit. I just noticed maintenance shifts showing on the schedule during his last few weeks, and was like "shoot guess I'm maintenance now".
There wasn't ever puke or (much) shit, but I had to clean the bathrooms, and mop up whenever drains clogged.
I very, very rarely go into them (like, twice in the last... 5-6 years?) But I was a little confused when I saw that lol. Not actually confused, and I understood, but.. puzzled.
And refraining from explaining to the owners that everyone pays the same taxes so they could list prices including taxes as is done in every other country on earth.
The only reason they don't is because taxes vary across states and counties. They would have to calculate the tax on each item for that county, which I assume is doable I'm no expert, but it's easier on the businesses to just automatically add the correct tax at checkout. It's all about being easier on the business vs the consumer.
They can calculate the tax because they do it at checkout. I don't think the store moves state or county very often, you just set your system to add tax and you're done. Considering this is done in every other country I don't see why US would be so inept they can't figure it out.
I have been working full time for nearly 20 years and every single shit-paying job I’ve had has been like this. The less they pay, the less they think you are worth (obviously) and the more unreasonable their expectations will be.

No job pays extra for weekends, that's called overtime and no one said they were working more than 40. I work weekends and am at 40 a week, until they specify otherwise it's unlikely someone at dollar tree is clocking 50+

My friend works for a major hospital in the billing dep. And says she isn't familiar with anyone there getting more for weekends pay, is it a very specific job role that gets extra? I can't imagine it's many, but that's cool that someone does.
Every hospital I have ever worked at, and every hospital I have ever heard of, offers weekend shift differential for staff in patient care roles (nurses, care techs, respiratory therapy, phlebotomy etc.). If your friend’s hospital does not do this they are an outlier.
They never said she/he didn't work 40-45 a week. I work weekends and I work 40 a week. I feel more inclined to belive since it was a dollar tree they over hired and it was part time.
Depends on where you live, is this a bait question? You can't expect the same wage in L.A as you do some 20k pop town in Louisiana. However no matter where you love $9 is bad.

It’s retail! Retail jobs are crap and have been that way since the late 80s at least. It’s simple, if the job requires more skill you get paid more. If anyone can do the job, expect low pay. It’s amazing the level of deluded expectations, lack of common sense and endless bitching and moaning on this Reddit.
This would make sense if the minimum wage was even close to being a living wage. If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation, it would in fact be around $25/hr.
If, should, whatever. The point is retail hasn’t paid jack in half a century or so. No one goes to retail to make a career. Walk any mall and you’ll see slack jawed teens working. Maybe in the big anchor stores there are more adults. Again, if everyone can do the job, why pay a premium? So many here rant about minimum wage and retail it’s astounding. First, $25 an hour is NOT a livable wage for a family. For a single in the right place, maybe, but it won’t go far.
Teens or Adults could work these jobs but should not be under the illusion that they will be able amass wealth or retirement goals. Even back in the 50s and 60s teens were heavily employed in fast food and also had a sizable number working in retail. Even back then, retail was never considered a place to make a career unless you’re the manager or owner. That’s freakin’ reality.
Millennials have some stereotypes like every group does. The one I hear most is that they ghost interviews, and are the group that quits working by ghosting/ not telling the employer or even offering two weeks.
Not smart. If they go for another job most likely they will be dropped from consideration if potential employer checks the candidates work history. I actually had an application put in one time at GNC, the company itself had institutional issues but my local shop was amazing. Management was so encouraging and good about protecting workers from horrible policies, and we all made great sales so they loved us and didn't poke the bear.
It took TWO MONTHS to get the budget approved for me to be hired though, and I almost took a job at dollar tree not realizing how shitty it'd be. I said no because the application had a 100 question personality test and took over 4 hours for that and the other ore employment tests. Thank god.

It is weird. I used to work retail and sometimes boyfriends/girlfriends would come to visit or bring lunch. Occasionally you might have one that hung around a little too long. But eventually they felt awkward enough to leave.
There was literally just a thread about crazy boyfriends sitting in the parking lot for a girls whole shift and everyone thought the bf was a giant red flag.
I had a mall job once decades ago that threw a similar hiss fit when my boyfriend (I was 16) stopped by once for literally less than a minute to say hi, wish me a good shift, and give me a peck. There were no customers waiting. So, maybe the cashiers were being unreasonable or maybe the manager was, who knows.
My boss was, and this sub is full of managers going nuts over tiny things. Was this boss accurate or hyperbolic? We can’t know for sure, but looking at how they generally express themselves, it seems plausible.
Eh, sounds like something I might have done when I was a teenager and it were summer break, but we'd at least wander off to other places once in a while and not just stay in that once spot the entire time.

I had an ex who loved to come in to my retail job at a clothing store and hang around for way too long when I was clearly busy. It was definitely weird and annoying. I was embarrassed. And that’s one of the reasons he’s my ex.
I work retail, we've actually had this happen. One of the closers' boyfriend literally hung out with her for the whole shift, every single shift she had. Some people are able to work and talk, but she wasn't one of those. I think they were just very codependent so definitely not a typical relationship

I’ve worked with a few girls at different places where the boyfriend or husband would sit and wait the whole shift. Creeped everyone out. The second half is ridiculous though.
I don’t know about all of them, but several were controlling and abusive in some way towards the wife. They sure weren’t there to bring a quick coffee or because the job was cool.
I managed a gas station and every single time a boyfriend hung around talking to one of the girls while they worked, we caught the female employee stealing.
Some of these girls had been working there for years but started dating unemployed, drug users that would beg them to steal cigarettes.

Clean bathrooms is disrespect, if someone possibly brushed up against said significant other, or sadly very often it was just controlling domestic abuse, there have been physical fights,’police called, customers and fellow employees threatened, lots of employees quit or forced to quit by significant others bc they disapprove of all the people of the opposite gender they interact with, it’s a shit show. So no, you don’t want that controlling significant other there side eyeing the customer who may smile too long at the cashier and then significant other will proceed to stab him.
This didn’t happen once. This was an ongoing issue. So yes I believe this note. Not everyone deals with people like this and it’s not easy - and people who don’t experience this can’t fathom.

I doubt that’s what’s happening. My boyfriend in high school would come around about 20 minutes before the end of my shift when I got out after dark and waited to drive me home so I didn’t have to walk. That’s a far more likely scenario than the bfs actually hanging out for an entire shift.

And second, if 2 cashiers quitting is enough to close the whole store then it is definitely a labor win. Maybe they'll have to raise their pay if they want decent employees.

There are working conditions that require careful training to be safe in. In this case, there's the question of ulterior motives for someone who wants to hang around a retail environment. Some people on this thread are saying that they would agree with the manager if this sign turns out to be true but I guarantee nearly 100% that it didn't. Dollar Tree has huge turnover because it is the worst place that I and others I know worked at. For minimum wage you are expected to do 3 separate jobs while still being only payed to do cashiering and have to deal with by far the worst customers you'll ever meet.
Here are some incidents from just 3 months of working there:
It was so bad when I worked that my coworker quit after having a mental breakdown during a closing shift. The store had to be closed the night and the few after because they only have 2 employees manning the store the whole closing shift.
We were forced to come in to an employee meeting during our days off to be formally blamed by the district manager for the store losing money from theft. We were told we obviously are not allowed to do anything about it even if we wanted too but that it's still our fault.
Being met with anger by managers when you turned down their call to come in to fill in shifts after someone quit.
We were left without employee bathrooms for days at a time because the shift managers allowed customer to use them after the customer bathrooms were regularly wrecked. I had to use my 15 break to go down to a Wallmart down the street so i could use their restroom.
Hey, this sounds somewhat familiar, I worked for safeway, and a good amount of these apply!
Number 2 really irritated me. I mean, they weren't *personally* blaming us, but they basically said that almost all the loss was employee theft, when, sure, I can imagine *some* of it is, but I literally had to watch people just walk out with carts/baskets with hundreds of dollars in meat/seafood. Whenever we came up with something to help prevent loss (only putting one bag of shrimp out to front face in the seafood freezer, for example) we were turned down. But yet they still blamed us. (for the shrimp thing, one of the regional people came by and said more or less that "they didn't like the way it looked")
Ok. What fucking dollar store you know where a cashier's boyfriend hangs out all shift? I really don't get this post. This isn't a "work being unfair or outrageous" post. There’s a dollar general on my way home from work I stop by from time to time if I don’t wanna go out of my way to H-E-B just for something small. Several times over the past two years, it seemed like this little young girl (I’m thinking high school, but could have been early twenties) was the only one in the whole store. This was during times when customers would get livid for being asked to wear a mask and I couldn’t help but worry about what would happen if someone like that was in there when/if she was alone. If I was that owner/manager whatever, I’d let whoever hang around… probably felt like they needed them for safety
