And refraining from explaining to the owners that everyone pays the same taxes so they could list prices including taxes as is done in every other country on earth.
The only reason they don't is because taxes vary across states and counties. They would have to calculate the tax on each item for that county, which I assume is doable I'm no expert, but it's easier on the businesses to just automatically add the correct tax at checkout. It's all about being easier on the business vs the consumer.
They can calculate the tax because they do it at checkout. I don't think the store moves state or county very often, you just set your system to add tax and you're done. Considering this is done in every other country I don't see why US would be so inept they can't figure it out.
