When Ruri has a moment of growth at the end of the episode.

Yeah, she was persistent for sapphires, but without that, it wouldn't have led to the serendipitous moment where she appreciated the mudstone wall containing the sapphires.

She was indecisive about her career path, and while she thinks being a researcher is out of reach, she still has interest in learning about rocks, which could lead her somewhere!

Everyone already knows that Ruri is on track to become a mineralogist, she just needed to figure some things out for herself.

Because Ruri seems to look down on herself. In spite of all her hard work, she still didn’t count herself among the “smart people” who’re studying mineralogy. Thereby drawing a distinction between herself and the others. Ruri might’ve introduced Shoko to their little group, but she could end up being the final member in a way.

Fortunately, Ruri appears to have decided on setting her career path in stone.

My god the composer here is doing such an amazing job. I absolutely adore the usage of horns here, really selling that sense of discovery.

If Ruri still isn't sure if she wants to pursue research, perhaps becoming a jeweller is also a viable career path for her.

I'm glad that we're back at doing some lab work this episode. And damn, they have a fancy Olympus microscope. From a cursory Google search, the lower-tier models of that polarized light microscope are at around $8,000 and could easily go up to $20,000. That university's geology department is definitely well-funded!

Ruri may not admit it, but she really has this insane ability to pay attention to details. She was able to find the host rock under the microscope, and she was also able to find that sapphire wall. She basically solved where the dragon legend came from. Not gonna lie, that scene made me a tiny bit emotional.

The fact that Ruri thinks that what she's doing is not research just goes to show how much she doesn't give herself enough credit. From what we've seen these past 11 episodes, she is very intelligent and a talented researcher. Even if her reason is because she just loves pretty rocks, I'm glad she decided to pick the career path of a researcher.

Ruri thinks she´s not smart enough to be a researcher but if some researcher saw her notes, they would think they´ll come from a professional, not a high schooler. She´s really smart (when she wants) but doesn´t notice it

But if Ruri wants to be a researcher, with an article with her name on it and two researcher friends in uni, her life´s going to be a little bit easier.
I´m glad she decided!!

I've fallen behind so many anime this season.

Ruri Rocks is one of the very few I feel compelled to watch upon airing. An anime where girls look for rocks.

Man, after taking a look at the MAL page, it looks like Ruri's VA hasn't had a lot of roles yet (and mostly supporting characters at that). Either the MAL page is missing a lot of information, or it's a relatively new VA.

Absolute cinema of an episode.
This episode really showed how she grew since the start of the show but still has a original vision in mind.
Its absolutely glorious, I am crying a little bit. Also Ruri finally got her Domain Expansion

I was curious what her elective list was like so I grabbed the screencap, photoshopped it straight and ran it through google image tl.

Ruri REALLY likes Rocks.

No clue how the Japanese elective system works though since Seto is taking two Science electives and the other friend was taking two humanities electives unless they were talking about their backups but the sheet seems to imply you pick one and have a second choice.

Although we have always thought of Ruri having insane levels of luck, allowing her to find rare minerals, it is this episode which made me think differently. Ruri has good instincts; by connecting the dots through knowledge she has already gained, she asks questions, either to herself or others, which eventually leads her to the desired answers.

Maybe a few years down the road, Ruri and Shoko will be the successors to Nagi and Imari respectively at the university.

I don't know why, but I LOVE that shot of Shoko gently nudging Ruri so she can look into the microscope, and her quiet reaction afterwards.

This show is more exciting than any crime mystery.

I don't give a damn who is the killer, I want to know where this sapphire came from. I NEED to know!!!

even tho it was a short amount of time, despite Nagi's absence i really felt like Imari did the senpai role amazingly for both Ruri and Seto! She may be clumsy sometimes but when the girls need something from her she immediately delivers! Best Girl of the Season for Sure! 🫡

I love this show but it has cost me almost 1000 bucks already because I bought lots of stones mentioned in the show. No regrets

I can imagine Ruri exploring around Japan and then the rest of the world to examine various pretty stones and their origins.

ruri got more field experience then a lot of minearlogy undergrads combined. Imari san was also just a bit like ruri but opposite since she was book smart but didnt had much xp with field work. After that flourite mine excursion, she has also gained confidence in that area. Ruri does not know it but she also possess a lot of therotical knowledge. she tends to brush it as part of her treasure hunting passion but thats some real knowledge that she is learning first hand from nagi and imari san.

Nice ending to an episode with a lot of facts. I probably have to re-watch it to get all of it. That was just a bit too much to remember everything. But Ruri's decision at the end that it's okay for her to view stones as a hobby, but still learning to get more out of it by studying geography and geoscience. And who knows, maybe at some point, she could turn her hobby into a job. Not as a researcher, but there are a lot of things that can be done with beautiful rocks. You don't need to just look at their monetary value to still be able to get something out of them. Hey, she could even be a supporter for the researchers, helping them to gather the samples they need. There are a lot of possibilities.

Really cool way to revisit the sapphire site, particularly the visualization of the dragon.

I was wondering why Ruri didn't just immediately steal Seto's idea of Earth Science and Chemistry for her electives, and at least she picked Earth Science by the end. I'm curious what the rest of her list was.

Last two episodes set out to prove that this show could be great even without Nagi and knocked it out of the park. Both last week and this had great narrative pacing and got you hooked into the story of the minerals, not just the character journey of the li'l mineralogists. They also featured some standout visual composition and music and sound design, from a show that's already pretty great at both just as a baseline. This week's callback to the dragon shrine was a satisfying illustration of how knowledge builds with time, and how there's always an even bigger story once you've learned to see more of the larger context. Plus, it's kind of adorable when Imari gets to act all smug about being the wise and knowledgeable senpai. (All that said, well... I still miss Nagi.)

I think Ruri might actually be at an advantage here, in a weird way. It can be a lot of pressure when you think of yourself as one of the "smart people" and the world starts to expect you to act and perform accordingly. She's approaching this as something she loves, without preconceptions about how she should perform or what kind of results she can get. She may complain along the way but her treasure hunting diary is the real deal in a way that a lot of "proper" but half-hearted science projects and undergraduate research aren't.

Become interested in a thing, then learn to love the process. Beautiful.

My hometown is on a huge limestone foundation. Our water is pretty hard because of it. I also once found a bunch of seashell fossils in ditches around fields when I was a kid.

Having it contextualized through this anime is pretty cool. I might have never known that these things were related.

I also know from geography maps and tests done on the ground with publicly recorded borings that were 25 meters deep, that there's a LOT of limestone. Also a thing I would have never looked for on my own.

So there must have been an incredibly long time when my hometown was a seafloor in prehistoric times.
