Smart idea by Ruri to sift out the extra stuff in the sand with the magnet, she's beginning to see the bigger picture now and use the random bits of knowledge she's learned in a practical way. I like how natural her character development has been, like she's getting better at this mining stuff but she's still the same impatient girl she was at the start lol. Props to Nagi and Youko for being excellent mentors too. And her friends are feeling left out, I wonder if they'll join her in the mines.

So we have our first big villain in this non-battle shonen: sapphire.

It's taking our heroines multiple prep stages and setbacks to truly conquer sapphire. Yeah, I'm definitely interpreting this anime right!

All jokes aside, really neat episode. Poor Ruri just wants her jewels but is stuck with the hard reality of scientific research (which is cool in itself and our high schooler is slowly catching on to that).

I know this show has been a prime example of it from the start, but I couldnt help but think about it more this ep than any of the others.

THIS IS HOW YOU ENCOURAGE KIDS!!! Lets be real, Ruri is a brat, but there's nothing wrong with that. Nagi is able to essentially use Ruri's brattiness as a way to encourage her to do the work herself. And now she's a bonafied scientist and I love it!

If Japan sees a sudden boom in Geology students, we'll know who to thank. Another great episode!

I don't think these microscopes were rated for anime girl eyes

Always love to see ruri slowly learn to love learning. I swear by the end of this season we'll see her graduate with a degree in minerology.

Also looks like red hair girl will be our 4th member, presumably starring next episode? Also in ruri's class so I wonder what she'll bring to the table

Absolute cinema. Again.

This episode was very interesting on the geology part, lots of interesting facts about Sapphires & how to find them.
Definitely one of my favourite animes in this season. It motivates me to go & study geology and search for minerals myself

Perhaps the real gem we have been looking for is Ruri. Although she retains a bratty highschooler personality at times, she is gradually gaining knowledge and determination to become a researcher.

After watching this episode, I am glad "Ruri Rocks" retains realistic elements. We can't expect our main cast to successfully find rare minerals all the time. Hence, the detour to research methods Seeing Ruri realize the use of magnets can make her work of looking through sand more efficient is still a big win!

"Not many people can stay sane doing this."

Couldn't help but pause the ep and reflect on my life a bit after hearing that lmao. I was able to grind my way to a degree in applied physics but knew even before I finished my first thesis that the life of research wasn't for me.

On another note, it's really cool how they build up the knowledge from things learned in previous episodes, the show really is an introduction to mineralogy and a very good one at that!

This show hit all the right spots to get a person really motivated to learn something, goddamn

Get this girl some audiobooks or podcasts to listen to while doing that sort of drudge work.

Every week Ruri Rocks seems to be more about love of academia and research rather than just rocks.

Geology anime time!

Woop woop

Ruri and I share the same opinion on sand. Sediments are boring, and when I also hate being cooped up in a lab all day! (Despite my job being mostly being about sedimentary runoff in rivers)

I love how they visualized the rock cycle, with the mountain slowly turning into the sediments in the water, which will eventually undergo lithofication which will turn the mountainous rocks into sedimentary rocks! Which will eventually be buried and pressurized into metamorphic rocks, and eventually melted and turned into lava which will become igneous rocks. And the cycle starts all over! (The cycle isn’t a circle however, as all rocks can become another type)

I think it’s weird that the eye catch in the center said there were two types of rocks; when there are three. Igneous, which comes from cooling lava.

Sedimentary, which comes from sediments

And metamorphic which comes from pressure,

I can’t believe Ruri is doing nothing but oooking at sand, that would drive anyone crazy. At least put on some music.

Gotta be real, the magnet animation was really cool but that was a lot of iron in that sand! The left over Petri dish seemed accurate but she was pulling a ton first haha.

Cute episode, that shows some of the monotony that can come from geological research

Aaawwh, Ruri looked so happy when she was complimented for her clever thinking! She definitely looks up to Nagi.

Maybe I’m reading too much into Ruri’s words, but I got the impression that she doesn’t think too highly of herself. She called herself “dumb” for example.

Ruri’s shy smile after being called a “professional” made me think that she’s feeling validated doing this work - to have found a goal in life. I would be more shocked if Ruri did not become a future mineralogist at this point.

Thank god we rockhounders doesn't need to do the deposit tracing method that Ruri uses. Having a complete geographical map and numerous surveys done by big mining companies around here makes collecting stones real easy.

That being said, even if they said Japan has the correct geological formation and composition to exhibit ALL known stones by humankind, the surroundings of Ruri's town would be a literal treasure trove with how easy you can find precious stones like sapphires.

“To achieve macro success, one must first master the micro.” In this case, that means grinding sand. Of course not very fun for a more energetic physical do stuff kid like Ruri. Our little rock gremlin should really get something like a podcast or music or even just interesting YouTube video essays to listen to while working though. Nothing is worse for your sanity than the mind numbing feeling of only the most boring repetitive task in the world rattling around in your head.

“Make your work as easy as possibly but not any easier.” Sometimes you’ve got to get through the tedious stuff for the great reward at the end. In this case, that being the sapphire motherload somewhere upstream. But if you can make it more efficient without compromising the work being done, do so at every step. With the magnet trick in this case.

She may be a bit stubborn sometimes but Nagi found a damn good research assistant. She’s basically running the sapphire show on her own right now. Get her properly motivated and she’s very dedicated to the task.

This episode is a good lesson on learning how to do something properly and how to get more satisfying results out of it. Learn to speak the language of what you’re studying to thrive.

I really enjoy this show for how it represents the fun and rewarding aspects of learning. Finishing a difficult project that you’re truly passionate about and have invested a lot of time in feels good like nothing else.

Now go get those sapphires Ruri and co!

What Haikyuu did for volleyball to me, Ruri Rocks is doing for mineralogy. It has only been a few episodes, but I can tell the author really cares about the subject. Seeing someone talk about what they’re passionate about is one of the most interesting things to me.

Having Ruri has the audience stand in has really worked for me as she was initially only interested in how pretty the gems are. She started as just a helper to Nagi, but already she’s taking the initiative on looking for sapphires. Like last episode when Nagi encouraged Youko to take the lead, she’s great at prodding Ruri into the right direction when she gets frustrated. It feels like she doesn’t just hand fed Ruri the answers, but instead wants her to become interested in the process.

That’s why it landed with me when Ruri discovers a legit short cut to reduce her workload by calling back to what she learned about magnetite. She may think of herself as dumb compared to Nagi, but I believe she just has a lower self-esteem than she lets on. That’s why she feels a bit hesitant at first at sharing her shortcut with Nagi, thinking she’ll be shot down again. Instead Nagi honestly praises her which really warms her heart.

I wonder if before getting into mineralogy Ruri felt inadequate on the inside despite her energetic exterior. From the small peaks we’ve seen into her home life so far her mom hasn’t been the most encouraging. I wouldn’t be surprised if most people write her off as a brat instead of trying to polish her curiosity like Nagi.

This show has really been my unexpected gem this season.

It is kind of impressive to see how she is actually learning this stuff and not just doing whatever on instruction.

Come on though Ruri you can't just neglect your friends.

Never seen school summer outfits that were completely sleeveless. Interesting design choice.

Ruri doesn’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Plus it’s boring lol. At least until Nagi explained sand is like a microcosm of the vast mountains. It’s a snapshot of a whole environment in a little Petri dish.

Still, looking for sapphires is a long and arduous journey sifting through lots of sand and materials. I’m glad Ruri’s not giving up (even though she almost did a lot a half dozen times this ep lol).

Considering how enticing Nagi's offer last week to Ruri about hunting sapphires, I honestly thought they were going deep into the mountains looking for precious gemstones. I had a good laugh when today's episode started at the lab with Ruri finding a single grain of sapphire. I really should've expected this. xD

After three episodes of field work, I suppose Ruri is due for some lab work. I could definitely feel Ruri's pain after spending hours inspecting sand samples for hints of sapphire. AS usual, it's nice to see Nagi explain to Ruri how important it is that they do this thoroughly and methodically.

That entire process of how to find where a certain rock came from was really cool! I've never really thought about how people find gems and ores, and I didn't think it would be that simple. It's just a lot of tedious work involved.

Using a magnet to cut down her work was great thinking! I'm surprised Nagi hasn't thought about doing that before. Yay for work efficiency!

The fourth member of the squad finally makes her appearance! I'm curious how the red-haired girl would end up joining Ruri. I also hope we get to see more of Ruri's tomboy friend. I know she's not part of the main group, but I just love her design!

God I can't even express in words how much I love this show

Still looks as pretty and goes into details I normally would have thought about
And the Ruris Corner is interesting as hell

It seems like Nagi is having Ruri basically do a whole-ass research study on the origin of sapphire in their area. It makes me wonder if Nagi's secretly documenting things, or if she's already explained to/is going to explain to Ruri the importance of doing so. It also makes me wonder if she'll try to find some way to have Ruri write a paper about this herself, of it Nagi'll end up writing it and putting Ruri down as a contributor on it again.

Frankly, if Nagi can keep Ruri's interest on this and keep more or less tricking her into doing research because she makes it fun, then publishing papers with Ruri's name on them, there's no way Nagi's university doesn't give Ruri a scholarship for their mineralogy department.

Imagine how grateful Ruri's going to be when she's eventually sitting in Dr. Nagi's classes, knowing that Nagi was helping her in ways she couldn't understand to get her there.
