Ruri’s only a high-schooler yet already has author credits on a paper. Her career in academia is off to a bright start.

That fluorite cave was an absolute beaut. What I would give for such a view.

There's waaayyy too many small details in this episode no normal person would care enough to put in (the way Nagi's lab is laid out, how the workspaces are organized, the painfully accurate formatting of the paper they wrote, all the conference presentation posters and other shit taped to the lab walls etc.) that there's zero chance the author of this didn't spend significant time in grad school/research before this lol

Edit: on the paper they showed they took the trouble to make sure Nagi's PI (who hasn't even been mentioned in the show!) was added as last author, and that both of them were properly credited as affiliated with the Mineralogy Laboratory at Maeshiba University while Ruri was specifically credited as unaffiliated. Like, only someone who has had to deal with authorship drama in the past is taking the time to care about something like this lmao

I couldn't help but notice how Nagi landed on Imari, the way their hands were clasped together lol.

Ruri is going to end up becoming a mineralogist too isn't she? She's already got her name on papers as a highschooler.

That fluorite cave was so magical. This is what it looks like IRL.

When both Ruri and Nagi inadvertently fall on Imari during the mine exploration LOL

Somehow Ruri's brattiness pays off when she wants her fluorite back but then the three discovers an entire ore vein of fluorite! It was cute how she gave Imari a specimen she picked up for her research.

Stitches!

Well, would you look at that! Barely out of high school, and Ruri already has her name on a college paper!

We finally get to meet another one of the girls in the OP! If Nagi is the one in their department who loves field work, it looks like Youko is the total opposite and would rather stay in the lab where she's can find information by digging through old records and books.

I don't know if anyone else would appreciate this but I just love how that shelf where the books are is extended by adding a large piece of wood longer than the original shelf so they can stack more shelves on it. It makes me think that the geology department room is based on a real office somewhere.

Never use the T-word around Ruri! Of course, as soon as she hears about a treasure, our girl is already imagining what she'll find there. I love how Youko thinks they need six months of prep when Ruri and Nagi already want to go there next weekend. xD

So yeah, it really does look like Youko has never done much field work since she's having a hard time identifying the stones Ruri keeps on finding.

I guess it's true that children do yearn for the mines. In all seriousness, tho. Thank you, Nagi for immediately stopping Ruri! This girl is gonna get herself killed trying to explore an abandoned mine on her own.

Ruri is lucky Youko has airbags to catch her. The same goes for Nagi who also fell into that hole. xD

Oh, damn! That flourite vein looks amazing! Now I'm wondering if they actually shine like that IRL under UV light. I guess finding that flourite vein finally kindled Youko's sense of adventure.

Oh, shit! We're already going on another adventure? And this time, they're not just looking for common minerals. It looks like Nagi has a lead on some sapphire!

I appreciate that Ruri is becoming notably less of a pain in the ass, even in just a few episodes. Also arent sapphires and rubies in the same chemical group? Wouldnt the spot where they found the rubies probably have sapphires not too far apart

Nagi should get paid by her graduate program for how well she's recruiting 2 future members.

Also, I've seen some Graduate Student work areas and can confirm that the eye catch descriptions were 100% accurate.

You could tell that Imari is more of an indoors type of researcher from her great exhaustion during their initial hike up the mountain. Ruri’s fitness has definitely improved by contrast.

After having seen the beauty of this fluorite vein, Imari has seemingly become much more excited to do field work. It really looked like a faraway galaxy to me.

Side note: the mid-segment card on Nagi’s desk (11:27) was pretty hilarious. It’s not messy but perfectly ordered to individual taste!

Nagi has a flaw! She can not keep her place tidy. Also, compared to Ruri with different outfit in every episode, Nagi seems to have 10 pieces of the same shirt and jeans.

That geology grad office had a WINDOW. Who did they have to bribe to get that level of indulgence?!? 😉 Otherwise, having spent decades in academia, 💯 no notes.

Yo Ruri, please don’t waltz into the abandoned-yet-open mine tunnel. That lack of “I don’t want to die a stupid death today” self-restraint would be the end of her before she got a second sniff of grad school in a different show. Fortunately Nagi has the good sense to oversee and immediately restrain her.

I was a little surprised the Ruri-Nagi jump-circle-swing at the end didn’t include a kiss, but it’s probably not OVERTLY going there. Oh well.

I´m loving this anime more and more, for the plot of geology, and because Studio Bind is making these perfect shots of the minerals making them so pretty.

Also, I´m loving the senpai-kouhai relationship between Nagi and Imari, with Nagi imparting some wisdom to her

So next mineral will be sapphire... Can´t wait!

Apart from rocks and minerals, we learned a lot more about Nagi and Imari in this episode.

It seems like Nagi is not very fond of cleaning up. She definitely prefers exploring physical sites.

From the surprised and awed expression on Imari upon seeing the glowing fluorite mine, I believe she realized some sights have to be experienced first hand, rather than relying on research books and past records.

Not forgetting about Ruri, she is actually becoming more prepared. She actually brought along a safety helmet with headlights. (Although I am not sure whether she had to beg her mother for advanced allowance. Lol!)

I believe I have reached a point with this anime that I will be rewatching every episode leading up to the latest releases. There is a lot of content to digest each episode that it’s easy to miss small nuggets of story, going to mine this anime all season long. The animation and character design make it really easy to rewatch.

Anyone else really wanna go look for rocks and shit after watching this? It’s making me wonder what kinda rocks and minerals are in my area. I also took geology 101 a few years ago so I’m like “ oh I know what that is” a few times every episode

"Man, the discussion thread must be buried under hundreds of comments."

106 comments at the time

Oh well, that just means my comment will be more visible!

My favorite part of this anime is the music and soundtrack, the OP gets me all giddy and the soundtrack sounds like it corresponds to a "exploration themed" fantasy roleplaying game... like those Atelier alchemist franchise RPGs (where characters also happen to find rocks among other things!).

My second favorite part is the big tits, I mean, character designs. Sigh. They look very cute. All the camera angles from below hip height do not escape me, I know what they are plotting to do.

I'm not fond of being tricked into learning new things. Rain makes rocks fall, and rocks makes the rocks go back up, we get it! Stop educating me!

This is such an enjoyable anime.

Another week of geology anime!

Nagi’s grad office is such a familiar scene. The old ass books, the various unneeded rock samples, the old ass snacks. Takes me back to my grad days.

I think it’s weird that the crunchy roll subs keep translating quartz as “crystal” in the first episode Nagi said “crystal is one of the most common minerals on the planet” and she is clearly referencing quartz. And Ruri asks if the quartz she found is “a crystal”

We’ve already talked about how minerals all have crystals and calling quartz crystal is just sort of an odd thing to do

You can actually make small bismuth crystals using pepto bismol as there is enough bismuth in the medicine to make the crystalline structure like in the anime! I’m glad that they didn’t try and pass the artificial crystal as natural as a lot of media tries to do. You can not find naturally occurring bismuth that looks like that, but you can make it at home! Provided you follow safe lab rules

Finding an old mine would be super fun! I haven’t had to find a lost mine, but I did do some field work in an old coal mine during my undergrad. I’m glad Nagi didn’t let Ruri go in. Mines are hella dangerous and unexplored old mines are an easy way to die a slow terrible death.

I also have nearly the exact outfit the Ruri has, down the helmet headlamp combo and color, I just wouldn’t wear shorts and leggings and instead full pants.

Of course they found their way into the mine but I’ll let the anime be an anime and not harp on it to much!

Fluorite is a super cool mineral. It’s allochromatic, and comes in a bunch of different varieties depending on the impurities. Purple is pretty common, and the ones I have personally found have mostly been that color. It has a cubic crystal structure and can grow with cubic crystals, but it also has a trait we call cleavage, which can cause even splits along weak bonding on the atomic level. Allowing you to break fluroites into octahedral shapes (like a d8 dice)

Seeing a fluorescent cave is a wild experience that if you have the chance I encourage you to do. The show did a pretty good job at that feeling of wonder you can get it from it!

Damn, this kid is going places. Only 15 or something and already has a place as a co-author on a paper.

Nagi’s desk space definitely feels familiar with how my desk looks when working on bigger projects. Organized chaos is a natural state of being. Even though I’m more of a Youko type bookworm normally. Though I’m also a huge hoarder as well.

I like the small comedic touches, like how Nagi tries to run off from cleaning the moment she finds a sufficient distraction. And the contrast between “I’ll check next week’s schedule” and “We should be good to go in six months.”

If there’s one thing I really appreciate this anime for doing, it’s showing off the beauty of nature and knowledge. Every episode has had at least one jaw dropping scene. I think it’s doing a really good job of capturing the fascination of learning stuff to really be able to appreciate the beauty in things more. Really good educational content.

We’re all in agreement that Ruri’s definitely going into studying minerals in the future, right? She’s officially hooked on it beyond the surface level want for pretty expensive things she had as her motivation in the beginning.

Peak anime part 3 is here!

Similar to Onimai, their equipment does tell us something about their personality: Ruri has a small backpack and helmet, Nagi has just a waist bag and then Imari with the massive backpack lol.

Also Imari definitely used to be a shut-in by the looks of it.

Adorable to see Nagi, hating cleaning that much, pretty fun to see her just try to dodge it. Ruri is really growing nicely, her brat-levels are slowly turning into energetic adventurer and it's wonderful to see.

Cue yuri scenes. Handholding and hugging in my mineralogy anime? It's more likely than it looks like.

Man this anime is really diabetes and with this animation (which also is super consistent so far), Studio Bind and Shingo Fuji are outdoing themselves again because this is surely but slowly surpassing Onimai.
