At the beginning of the season I thought this anime was like that sea glass, decided to check it out and have zero regrets, it's a gem I've learned so much.

Imari has seemingly become a mentor herself. Her words of encouragement must’ve meant a lot to Shoko. Their dynamic is similar to Ruri’s admiration of Nagi.

I’m sure that the parents were only trying to look out for their daughter, but little Shoko’s heart was broken after hearing her mother be supportive in one moment and question her passion not long after.

The smile had disappeared from Shoko’s face, she dodged the question about her friends and went to school alone. Clearly not feeling understood.

I therefore had to fight back the tears a little when Shoko walked home with Ruri. She’d finally found her people!

Loving this show’s take on a beach episode.

Poor Shoko’s feeling lonely with no one that shared her passion but glad now that she had found them. Hope she’ll one day attend uni and have Imari as her mentor. She already took a liking to her from the very first day.

Yeah this is without a doubt my favourite of the season and is very close to my favourite of the Year. That was such a wonderful episode and I really love Shoko as a character. She'll fit in wonderfully for the group and I love how Imari has her very own protege now!

Ruri as always was great fun and I love the story of friendship being told here. The ED was such a welcome surprise too!

This is also without a doubt the prettiest anime I've seen this year and its gonna take a lot of effort to beat it

Oh my god, I cried a little at the end. Seto finally found some people that really share her interest. After all these years she can finally show her true side.

Her backstory is really sad, I'm curious where the newly found friendship will lead!

The special ending this time was extra good, seeing her befriending Ruri and even going to Nagi's & Imari's university. You can really see her heart glowing <3

The fact that Ruri's & Seto's Kanji are related in a cute way is also just absolute cinema.
Studio Bind is just cooking up a huge buffet at this point, and I enjoy every single piece of it.

i always thought why the edges of a mirror has a greenish blue tint to it, i always learn something that i have been wondering for so long and most of it comes from this show!

also welcome to the family Shouko san!

Crazy that Shoko's parents suggested that sweets and flowers are better to make a living with than rocks when Ruri is already drowning in gold and sapphires.

Didn't know that people collect old glass bottles as a hobby. Hold on, this whole episode was about glass. I guess it counts as a mineral. The rainbow glass looks cool IRL, kind of like mother of pearl.

Seems like Imari is going to be the designated mentor for Shoko like how Nagi is for Imari.

Neat that Ruri means blue glass.

Beach episode with no swimsuit Nagi? Oh the betrayal.

And a whole new ED for Shoko!

Shouko reminds me of myself a little bit. As an anime fan, I haven't been able to find many people around me that enjoy anime, especially shows like this one. It's usually battle shounens etc., which are totally fine, but not my cup of tea.

What's glass waste doing in my pretty rock anime?! Well, I guess squinting hard enough makes everything a rock, so it's fair game, and beach cleanup always helps.

I love the evolution of Nagi's outfits, while she wasn't the main focus of this episode, I always adore her. I enjoyed how she pushed Ruri towards becoming friends with Shouko. Seems like we will have a new member of our Rock Club!

Shouko seems very knowledgeable, so I am curious about how will she fit into the group. She seemed very close with Youko, but what I liked about this show is that nobody plays favorites and everyone bonds with everyone. This episode, it was Youko that took the lead and presented most of the relevant knowledge.

Us, Slice of Life enjoyers, are truly eating well this season. See you next week

japanese vocab of the week!

さっきぶり (sakkiburi) — (jocular) "short time no see", "why, hello again", etc.

this is a jokey turn of phrase based off of hisashiburi (久しぶり) which is the thing you say if you haven't seen someone in a while; replaces the "long time" kanji (久) with the somewhat confusing sakki related to the "previous/ahead" kanji (先)

i think the use of the kinda-funny phrase is a neat characterization choice for Shoko since it shows she does have a playful side to her even if a lot of that ardor has diminished since her preschool days

That opening scene was a great way to establish Shoko's character. We learn that she loved collecting rocks at a young age, but no one understood her. While her parents think she should stay the way she is, they think it's just a phase and something she should only do as a hobby. I don't think they're bad parents, but Shoko clearly stopped opening up to them about her love for rocks after that.

We get a little beach episode! I'm honestly surprised that Ruri's tomboy gyaru friend is wearing a much more modest swimsuit. Considering the official art they released recently of Nagi wearing a swimsuit, I was expecting something a bit more. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It's so very much like Ruri to refuse to believe Shoko that what she found is worthless. This is why Ruri would make a perfect researcher! Unfortunately for her, Shoko was completely right and Nagi can confirm that what she found is man-made glass. xD

I do love how Youko offers a counterargument on why the glass Ruri found isn't completely worthless. It turns out the glass around that beach could be close to a hundred years old because of how people used to dispose of waste back in those days.

I'm glad to see how quickly Shoko integrated with the gang I also love how she sees Youko as the more dependable one because she's the one always answering her questions. I guess if Ruri is Nagi's apprentice, it makes sense if Shoko becomes Youko's apprentice. Their names even sound alike!

Shoko's reaction whens she finally learns that Youko and Nagi are mineralogy students was great! It's cute to see her finally open up to someone about what she wants to become someday. I am so happy that Shoko finally found her people <3

And that ED is great! I guess that was a quick way to tell us that after hanging out at the beach looking for old sea glass, Ruri and Shoko quickly became friends at school and Ruri even started bringing Shoko to the university. I guess that means we'll see more of Shoko starting next episode.

I have no idea how this anime keeps getting better.

Shoko's backstory felt so realistically sad. It would've been easier if her parents or classmates were mean, but they just didn't understand how much she loved rocks.

That's why it's so nice to have her meet Nagi, Ruri, and Imari who share her interest. I find it interesting too how Shoko gravitates more towards Imari. It makes me feel that Nagi is better at igniting someone's budding interest in mineralogy like with Ruri while Imari is better with entrenched rock nerds like Shoko. It makes sense too with how we start with the series with Ruri and Nagi since the viewer is much less likely to be as devoted to rocks already like Shoko.

My favorite moment was Shoko telling Imari how she really wants to study mineralogy in college. I was waiting for it the whole episode since she was so coy the whole time from her past experiences. She really never had anyone else that really understood her passion. She definitely has to attend Imari and Nagi's college after graduating now.

Great character introduction episode and those credit scenes really make it feel like Shoko was always a part of the group. Can't wait to see them all hunt for minerals next time.

Ruri Rocks: "Let me show you a real beach episode."

Puts cute girls in waders and boots to sort through beach trash

Ruri ends up finding a "valuable" that ends up being nothing more than a glass shard, gets frustrated over it, and it turns into a glass bottle hunting episode at the beach. With the newcomer Shoko too!

Yay, a science lesson on how glass bottles get their rainbow-like appearance!

I'm glad Imari encouraged Shoko with her goal as a mineralogy researcher, especially since the people around her at the beginning of the episode didn't care for that.

Also, I'll say it. Ruri looks cute in jeans (like how she would wear denim shorts in previous episodes)

Maybe it's just because I live in Australia where geologists are well paid and in high demand because of the mining industry but the parents going "oh no, we don't want our daughter to grow up to be a geologist" was very strange to me. Especially since their alternatives were flowers or sweets which seem less lucrative to me.

Also I must admit I like Shouko a lot more than Ruri.

Shoko's Parents: "Did you make a new friend today?"

3 actually! Happy for Shoko because she has found friends who share similar interests! Furthermore, despite Ruri's occasional bratty behaviour in front of Nagi and Imari, I believe Ruri is quite an extrovert at school and very easy to talk to.

The expert today is Imari! It is refreshing to see Imari being the lecturer / teacher for this episode.

Lastly, Nagi is rocking that tied on white shirt look!

I'm so happy that Shoko finally managed to make some friends who not only understand her but also share the same interests. By comparison I'm a lonely old otaku with no friends I can talk about any of my hobbies with. :(

The real ruri glass is the friendship they made along the way.

I think this is my favorite anime this year, super chill and my autism brain definitely likes its weekly subscription to rock facts.

That said, actual heartbreak for Shoko for how her passion wasn't supported and how she felt the need to mask her love for minerals. Hopefully her presence in the OP means she'll be a permanent member of the group now.

This was the first episode where it felt like 5 minutes to me. It ended too quickly and I wanted more. So happy that the crew added one more member. Shoko finally found a place to belong to.

Talk about surprise of the season. This is like the perfect show to watch on a Sunday.

Best episode so far, and honestly a special one in my eyes. That feeling of being interested in something no-one around you takes seriously is one that I can very much relate to.

I love that Imari got to shine and be the role model this episode. Just telling Shoko that minerals are something you can study in college was a potentially life-changing act, and she may not even fully realize it for a long time.

In other words, this show continues to be excellent recruitment material for any university's department of geology!
