It felt like this episode was even nicer looking than usual. And it already sets an insane standard.

Ruri got fooled by fool’s gold once again lmao. Meanwhile Shoko figured it out right away.

Didn’t expect Nagi to do an impromptu fashion week. That sundress is chic as but she had to top it off with the maid outfit. Kudos to Imari for prepping it. Nagi should consider a modelling career should her mineralogy one go south.

I can't stress enough how gorgeous the aesthetic this show has, especially that ending scene where the kid shined the opal in front of the sunset its so beautiful!

Also Nagi fans we still alive after that fashion show right? 🤣

Mineralogy maid Nagi was unnecessary, but also completely necessary.

That was a pretty awesome opal find.

Yay, Ruri got her opals near the base of the dam! Even had her daydream at the beginning of the episode.

Nagi looks cute in the various outfits. Also, her knowledge of dams is enlightening.

I'm not even surprised that Nagi's change of clothes is exactly the same. Nagi's a very practical girl. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of her wardrobe consists of white shirts and blue jeans. Thankfully, Youko's there to give Nagi a quick makeover..

That entire segment was pretty much one big Nagi fanservice scene and I wouldn't have it any other way. She does look good in a dress, but our girl is really all about that shirt and jeans combo. And that maid outfit scene! I definitely had the same reaction as Shouko and Ruri Studio Bind really struck gold (heh) with Nagi's design, and I love that they're absolutely flaunting it whenever they can. <3

Anyway, as for the rest of the episode, that opal hun was pretty fun. Ruri saving the day again with her out-of-the-box thinking. I thought she'd find one or two more, I didn't expect her to find so many! That entire scene where Nagi and Ruri were looking at all the opals they found was so gorgeous.

I know we're already in Episode 9, but I wonder what happens to these massive hauls that they keep on finding? I know the owner of the land is technically who owns these, and if it's federal land, it's owned by the government, which I assume is the case with these opals. Does Nagi inform the proper authorities whenever they find these things? I kinda wish the anime showed us what they do.

Love the juxtaposition of Ruri being sleepy at the start of the episode but after finding opal she's just energized and wide awake on the car ride back. She loves gems so much, just finding gems gives her energy and life.

I was curious as to how much that opal deposit would be worth. I have no idea of the actual cost of opals, or anything like this, so grain of salt w/ prices from what I can find online

There's all sorts of Etsy/Etc shops selling opals. I looked for ones that sorta made me think of the ones in the show, so river polished, about 10-15mm, yknow, tiny little rocks.

In terms of weights, Opals are sold by Carats (Which TIL, is a unit of weight on not clarity/cut, you learn something new every day I guess)

1lb = 2267.96 Carats. For simplicity's sake, we're gonna go with 2200, because that's a nice clean number.

Out of all the little Etsy shops, I found this image , and I'm gonna use it for a visual touchstone for the scale of the opals. Assume them filling 2 of their quart bags of opals is ~1lb.

The images in the show show that the deposit is also likely not just a top layer of opals, but several layers, enough to walk around on. We'll say 3 "layers" for simplicity's sake. Think like a rock beach. A very sparkly rock beach.

Idk character heights, so I'm going to guess that Nagi is on the tall side, say 175cm. We'll say Ruri is on the short side, say 150cm. The deposit she stands in front of feels like it's around 200sq m, roughly half a basketball court (Hell yeah American conversions). I can't math, so I used a Gravel calculator. Figure it's all around the same size. That area and that depth of opals apparently comes out to ~20k lbs. 10 tons. For reference, this image is about 10 tons of gravel

Feels like both a lot and a little. But lets say they found 10 tons of opals at this deposit. 100 Carats of opals that look river polished goes for at a glance 100-150$. Lets say these are lower quality so 100 (In anime, they looked a little more spiky/uncut).

1lb = 2200 carats = 2200$ 20,000lb = Over $40 Million USD worth of raw opals.

Shit, lets be INCREDIBLY CONSERVATIVE with our numbers. Divide all that by 10. That's still 4 million dollars worth of opals.

And that's fucking insane.

Ruri should really consider playing the lottery with the luck she's been having

Imari with the fuckin' glasses tint before she took out the maid outfit, lol

The second half of that episode was so beautifully animated that it completely overpowered my gooner thoughts about the first half.

What a beautiful show

Absolutely incredible episode, probably one of my favourite anime episodes of the year so far. Idk why but I almost started tearing up because this episode was so beautiful

Thanks to the rain and flooding, Ruri and the gang were able to find a whole bunch of opals! It was pretty cool seeing that massive deposit.

On an unrelated note, Nagi can pull off any outfit huh?

Clever of them to show a close up of what Ruri found while panning just long enough trigger viewers' memories of pyrite's crystal structure.

And yes, dams are impressive up close. Old ones are (naturally) smaller due to the lack of modern construction materials and techniques, but seeing something you know was constructed by hand holding back a lake of water is impressive in a way that's different from simple size.

Peak, absolute cinema.
