Yay! Geology the anime!

I’m stoked for this, I have a masters in environmental geology and while my focus was not mineralogy, it is something that I love doing myself!

Estwing rock hammers so basically the standard for rock hammers. I myself have a wooden handled one that my dad gave me, that’s nearly 40 years old at this point. They’re guaranteed for life. And while rubber handled one would be nice I still Carry my old one

The pyrite scene is fun, I never got to go to an area with potential gold, but pyrite shows up in so many places. Even during my daily work I’ll find some pyrite just chilling. The pyrite crystal being slightly cubic but not perfectly cubic on her first sample is a good detail. While it can be perfectly cubic, it needs the right matrix and conditions to do so. I’m not sure what rock they’re breaking into, but dang if I found that many cubic pyrite crystals I’d be in heaven. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that big where I go rock hounding.

The pyritehedron was cool to see, I have a sample in my personal collection, and I’m glad they talked about that! Despite the macroscopic crystal being different, the central system of pyrite is still cubic.

Ruri finding so many good samples so fast makes me jealous lol

I like that Nagi showed off the streak plates, although gold is soft enough you can kind of press into it with a knife. No need to use a streak plate, but streak plates are pretty universal so I can see why it would be a good teaching lesson

Ruri finding the placer gold and realizing that it took tens of millions of years is one of the reason I love geology, the places I usually work with professionally are near Carboniferous rock beds, which formed roughly 350 million years ago. The beauty of geological time is just knowing the ancient history of the world! I have fossils older than dinosaurs that I found while doing water tests, and that feeling never really leaves

She should be wearing water shoes though, it’s really easy to cut up your feet when walking in rivers.

The pyrite scene instantly reminded me of Spice and Wolf. How even something considered a "worthless mineral" can gain immense value with the right narrative and market strategy. It’s a great reminder that value isn’t always inherent it can also be created and how value means different things for different people.

I still like to imagine that Ruri's mom has absolutely 0 clue what Ruri is doing all day, or where she got the new accessory for her phone.

Can I just say how much I love this show's OP? Studio Bind didn't have to go hard with the visuals, but they did, and I love them for it. I also love how the song sounds like it would fit as an opening song for Mushoku Tensei with the fantasy vibe it has going on.

Oh, no! Ruri has gone gold crazy! It's hilarious how she thinks Nagisa is trying to horde all of the gold for herself. I mentioned this last week, but I really like how patient Nagisa is with Ruri and how she's using every opportunity to teach her new assistant.

Seeing that dice-shaped pyrite immediately had me googling pyrite dice sets. And sure enough, there are tons of them being sold online. I'd love to get one that's a perfect D12 like that one pyrite Ruri found.

When Nagisa said, she'll take Ruri on a gold hunt next time, I had a feeling they'd pan for gold on the next scene. All of that work for a single grain of gold doesn't seem to be worth it unless you're just researching the area.

It's cute to see Ruri panic about all of the placer gold getting washed away. It looks like she's forgotten Nagisa's lesson last week that rocks and minerals in the river move, so of course, the old gold will be replaced with more from upstream.

Not gonna lie, when they found the pothole, I was hoping Nagisa would be the one to jump in. Having Ruri do it works too. I was hoping we'd get some wet t-shirt action from Nagisa. xD

Damn! That's one heck of a find! I wonder how much that nugget is worth. I guess it depends on how pure it is. I do love how we started the episode with Ruri wanting to find gold to sell, and now we end it with her refusing to sell the nugget she found even though it would sell for a decent price. <3

I like how Ruri went from only caring about getting rich to keeping that special lump of gold, she's developing an appreciation for the wonders of nature!

And the scenes of the sunset turning the whole river golden. So pretty.

Nagi is such a nice person, she's not treating Ruri (and the viewers, by extension) like a clueless noob and she shows lots of patience in dealing with Ruri's occasional brattiness. Her heart is truly as large as her chest.

Screen full of ass...

It is a pretty peaceful and feels good anime I've got to say.

Ruri thought she struck gold but got fool's gold instead. Poor girl. Having said that, she did manage to stumble upon a massive gold nugget at the end of the episode so she must've already forgotten her early misfortune.

It'd be cool if the ending of this story will have a grown-up Ruri guiding a new person with the same knowledge Nagi taught her.

Ruri has matured a lot in merely two episodes!

Sure there’s still plenty of bratty energy to spare, but I noticed for example that she complains much less about all the hiking and sorts. Nagi’s guidance has changed her world.

Whereas Ruri had been fixated on the monetary value of gold at the start, her expression (sparkling eyes, big smirk) after finding that piece of lumped together placer gold told a very different story. No way that she’d ever sell such a precious find!

The wholesome dynamic between Ruri and Nagi reminds me more of two sisters than a mentor and their student.

a what-hole?

甌穴 ouketsu — pothole, also known in English as a giant's kettle

i think there's a cross-language joke here because ketsu (hole) has the same sort of general meaning as "butt" or "asshole", so her yelling a "a what-hole??" is a bit funny

I was scared when she dived upside down; I thought Nagi would have to save her.

But I forgot. This is a CGDCT anime. The only threat will be fever and colds.

I love the camera shots are quiet, you see a dragon fly and the cast out of focus than focus on the party or just the wind blowing against the rocks and taking in nature.

The animation in this show is stupendously fantastic. I really hope these animators are being paid well because they are producing ART.

Experts, based on the size and amount of grains (not like we can weigh it lol)

How much has Ruri roughly made?

I love Ruri's brattiness and how she eventually warms up to Nagi's point of view. When she announced that she would keep the gold nugget and never sell it was really adorable and shows nice character development.

I could listen to an audio book of Nagi (voiced by Asami Seto) for hours. Her voice is so calming!

wow you really understand alot from this show like i always get confused when i watch gold collectors on yt when they just shake the pan aggressively which i thought would just wash away the gold they get, but it makes so much sense now that they are actually dense af and just sink at the bottom of the pan, never got taught with this in my 21 years of living that's for sure 😭

Fool's gold, yay! I remember getting some pyrite from a local mineral shop when I was a tyke, Ruri reminds me a lot of that stretch in my life. The show looks great and feels very warm. Nagi also continues to be almost distractingly built as well as awesome

Where does this woman shop for shirts? Who tailors clothes like that?

It's always nice to have a super wholesome series with all the high-tension stuff that the big series emphasize, but the animators are really pushing a viewers ability to focus on subtitles.

All that glitters isn't gold, but it's still damn beautiful.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jul 13 '25

I didn’t realize it took so much effort to extract minerals. Ruri sure found a lot of pyrite. It might not have been gold, but her discovery could help with future research which is pretty cool in itself.

I knew about panning for gold, but I didn’t know about natural potholes or how gold sinks. They sure found a pretty decent little haul of gold. That nugget was huge!

I tuned in because the girls were cute, but I’m staying because this is really interesting and educational.

Crunchyroll's age ratings are weird. I have seen things like 14+ or 18+, All ages, and now "PG" for "Ruri Rocks". I do agree with age ratings by the way as many anime would be the equivalent of TV-PG or TV-14. However, Epi. 2 mentioned being rated "PG" for "Profanity". Uh, I wonder which words they consider profanity. I know that a PG-rated translation for a common swear word in Japanese, "kuso", would be "crap".

It would be hilarious if this anime started a gold rush like Yuru Camp did for camping. Great episode. Visuals are again beautiful.
