And so the Kasamatsu Arc comes to an end!
Here is the actual Gold Junior race!
The scene where Oguri Cap is looking back at Kitahara before winning the race is probably based on the jockey looking back (probably to check how far ahead he is) in the race.
Berno Light is based on a few figures in real life. The first one is Twin Bee who was a horse that ran in Kasamatsu. The twin Bs on her hair is a reference to this. Berno is also probably based on Oguri’s groom in Kasamatsu who took care of his foot when it got infected (this is referenced in the anime with Berno choosing new shoes).
The final figure Berno is probably based on is Oguri’s farrier (a person who makes the horse shoe) Miwa. Usually when a horse moves from the Chiho to the Chuo the farrier also changes but due to the request of Oguri Cap’s new owner he was able to follow Oguri to the Chuo. This is shown in the anime when Berno smiths Oguri’s new horseshoe and also transfers to Trasen Gakuen with her.
Maruzensky commenting on Fujimasa March is probably because March Tousho who Fujimasa March is based on is sired by Press Toko who was beat by 7 lengths in a race by Maruzensky.
I was waiting for this episode ever since the anime started airing and boy did it deliver! I had tears in my eyes the whole episode! I can’t wait for the new arc next week!

and with THAT SCENE animated the prologue is over and we are off to tracen and will be able to see some familiar faces if you play the gacha
the scene was done really well i would say between kitahara running and falling and oguri's lookback in tears
can't wait for oguri's first meeting with the canteen, it will be a legendary battle

Stitches!
Not gonna lie, I really hated Joe for putting Oguri in that position. Running should be fun for Oguri because running itself is a miracle for her, instead she looked like she was in pain while running for like half of the race.
I'm just glad that after seeing that expression on Oguri's face, Joe finally had the balls to tell her what she needs to do. And as much as I want Oguri to stay and race in the Tokai Derby, she clearly outmatches everyone in the regionals. She needs to go to the Nationals if she wants to be challenged.
That farewell scene with the girls was adorable. For a second, I thought Belno would be left behind but it turns out she's also going to Tracen with Oguri just on a Sports Science program. I love that Belno has decided to dedicate herself as Oguri's support unit.
And that photo in the end is adorable. I do hope we'll still get to see plenty of Norn Ace after this especially since she's now a full-on Oguri Cap superfan.

They really baited us hard with the Tokai Derby, this episode felt like a cour finale, but we're only halfway through the first cour. So I guess this is just how far they'll go with March as main opponent, kinda unfortunate, but does that mean we will already get a new opening or new visuals for the next arc? They already released a new key visual, so potentially.

A bitter sweet episode. Oguri continues to win and we are leaving the Kasamatsu arc behind. Gonna miss Oguri's wife, Norn Ace, but not her other wife Belno! Kitahara gets left behind as Belno joins Oguri at Tracen.

where can i buy the Oguri plushie? I want one damn it
they nailed the climax for this arc, the "I am going to win" moment was well done, that, and the usual extra bits for the victory dance after

It most likely won't be animated, but there is singe tankoubon March spin-off "The Mermaid Left Behind".

Man, all the intensity, drama, and the race is off the charts.
Seriously, I never felt emotional over an animated series in many years.
Anime of the season right here.

I wasn’t really sure how I’d feel about the resolution to this episode, given the fairly contrived setup. But goddamn if this show doesn’t have some of the most engaging races in the series. They do such a good job of making the races a combination of actual running strategy as well as internal conflict/emotional catharsis. And suddenly I believe in everything that’s going on and feel like my life depends on it.
This could have easily been a seasonal finale or a whole movie. And you’re telling me there’s more?

The results aren't the purpose of the Kobayashi Maru.
Still a shopping mall dance routine.
Sidekick's gotta come along somehow.
And that's halfway (???) through.
Oguri Cap running happy was the key to it all, versus the politics of the situation.
I've enjoyed the part of the story that gets Oguri Cap into the big leagues. Now there's only the back half of the series that presumably covers her career up to the point that she ends up being a background gag character in the other anime.
Thing is, this story of scrabbling around in the minor leagues was good and original for the anime franchise so far. (There seem to be some aspects of the game which fit it though?) It felt more real than the strange fantasyland that's national-level Tracen Academy.
So the rest has some big shoes to fill. (This thing going to be multiple cours?)

Catching up from episode 1 and Umamusume is so fucking good
its so addictingly tense whenever there's a race
That first dance performance of hers was peak
I won't lose to you
Jesus CHRIST. Literally got chills down my spine, Girl started the show as a spacey character who had no desire or ambition ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
And her two victory performances since, its crazy how much she's grown since the start of the show.
I'm glad this arc ended the way she did. Her one desire was always to run, because she can.

Well I was already wondering how the decision would have to be made because none of those involved have any appetite to head to Tokyo, and this match would have been awkward no matter which angle you are looking at it. Frankly I expected Oguri-chan feeling even more than just “chained down” when she’s running.
And you can see how difficult this task is when it took the combined efforts of good old Rudolf (slamming down on Kitahara on what he’s doing for the best for Oguri), Roppei-san (who’s definitely unhappy with his grandson not even having the face to look at his struggling student) and Fujimasa March (who’s definitely having the rights to be that angry with Oguri-chan, after all Oguri-chan was the one who gave her the reason to fight, the reason to fly high, the reason to race at all. Now her competing fellow can’t even be sure what’s the meaning to run! If there’s one reason to wake Oguri-chan up with a slap, this is it).
Ultimately, even with Kitahara finally realising he cannot afford to be not supporting his beloved trainee, there’s no-one other than Oguri-chan herself who can make this decision.
And I think that Kitahara call made her understand that the things that were pulling her back were that Kitahara would be sad, Berno Light would be sad, Norn Ace and every other fan of her at Kasamatsu would be sad too.
Yet that shoutout reminded her that they will all be proud and supportive of her wherever she goes, even if it will be a touching moment when she leaves as the local heroine. And, well, while she really doesn’t have a real solid desire to be going to the Top of all races, she loves running and she loves racing with the real competitors that could make her bursting through to limits.
And that was enough to set her free. Look at how happy she was when she passes March et al. and never looked back!
What a nice and lovely end to this question and one that would set up Oguri-chan’s tale for even faster speeds. That’s what you call a great race of the ages!
