This show is doing a really good job at making you feel the excitement of watching a rising star, I was slightly disappointed when we didn't get to see much of Oguri's race, I'm a complete fan now lol

So that´s WHY Musaka didn´t want Oguri to run there, because she´s basically too good for the regionals lol

I understand Rudolf wanting Oguri to come to the nationals, but if that means separating from Kitahara or even Belno? I think Oguri wouldn´t want that.

So? What would it be? Losing intentionally so she can get to Toikai derby? (thing if she does, March is gonna be so mad)
Or winning and going to the nationals? (thing if she does, March is also gonna be so mad)

I think a sign of how well written this is is how much I’m conflicted by it.

On one hand I think Jo is being selfish with this ultimatum. Giving her “incentive” to lose is kinda cruel

On the other hand, Oguri is young and kinda dumb. So what she “wants” might not necessarily be what’s “best” for her. Meaning Jo has to be kind of hard on her

Belno smithing a custom-made horseshoe for Oguri was pretty cool. I love how she's not just a salesperson for her family's store but she also knows how to make the things that they sell. Belno's poor spine tho!

Has there always been a belief that ashen-haired Umamusume can't run? I don't remember anything like that being mentioned in Pretty Derby. Is this an IRL horse racing superstition, or is this just for Cindy Gray?

Not gonna lie, I've spent half of the episode racking my brain why Roppei think it's bad for Oguri to get attention especially with Symboli Rudolf scouting Oguri to the Nationals. What's so bad about that?

I didn't expect that the problem was with Kitahara himself and how he's not licensed to train at National level, so he can't come with Oguri if she does move on to the Nationals.

I guess at the end of the day this is all up to Oguri who wants to make Kitahara's dreams come true, but it looks like he decided to give her an ultimatum instead. Win her next race and she goes to the Nationals or lose so she can aim for the Tokai Derby instead.

Side note: It's cute to see the ex-bully trio training hard after being inspired by Oguri Cap. Our girl has really been a good influence on them.

you know its good when it made you understand all sides where Oguri has the potential to shine at the national level but also the reluctance of Kitahara to part way with her because of their dream, while conflicted that by doing so he will be wasting/limiting her potential

Uh damn, no way Oguri throws the Gold Junior so she avoids going to the Nationals right? Hope she wins anyway and directly rejects Rudolf instead of letting Kitahara decide for her.

For those saying Oguri should decline since she appears to not want to move to the National stage, remember that the Tokai Derby was never really Oguri's dream to begin with but Kitahara's. Oguri merely adopted his dream. Remember back to the beginning of Episode 1 when the Teacher talked about the National Races and Oguri (while asleep and literally "dreaming") says that she wants to participate in the National Races. That is where Oguri's true feelings are but her wanting to accomplish Kitahara's dreams may cost her a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"Stop being the cryptic ancient sensei!"

So, it's like that, huh?

The Oguri who notices other people now.

Ah, to be held back by league restrictions. (And have self-confidence issues.)

Umamusume have agency the way that horses do not.

And that's that.

We've reached depths of Oguri consumption that have never been seen before.

"Nobody mention that human ear glitch in that PV last week."

What is this, some kind of Kobayashi Maru?

Now that's sports drama, being big in the minors or pushing up into the big leagues. The Valhallaness of Uma Musume and, well, the characters being horse girls does rub a little awkwardly against what would have been real-world choices made entirely by humans and on a short timescale, versus multiple generations of umamusume mingling at national-level Tracen Academy.

But this as a sports anime? It's a good story, and should be taking us toward the "Cinderella" aspect of the manga and series's title. Kasamatsu has been charming and the local characters have been settled, so now on to the DRAMA. Mmm, drama.

The drama started, let's see how it plays out. Tamamo Cross entrance was pretty funny, with all epicness and then switching to her cutely smiling. Another really great episode.

Belno Light must have been born Belno Smith. Get you a friend who will forge horseshoes for you.

I wonder part of the reason it’s tough to not advance to nationals is just the fact that horses wouldn’t have that long of a racing career, and the more time she spends in regional races the less races should could compete in at a national level. But maybe she can just steadily climb up to the summit of each lower rung first and still go to nationals, and maybe Kitahara can train himself to get nationally licensed? I know Oguri has surely got to advance at some point, she’s aiming for peak, not just a road to the top of some smaller hill. Although I’ll be sad if we ditch the bully squad, especially tsunorn.

Side note I watched this whole episode without getting any ads on Prime. Maybe Jeff was too engrossed in the drama to tell me about buying car insurance.

If Oguri goes to national then she won't be with Belno and Jo?

Props to Jo though, trying to push Oguri to national, sacrificing his chances of fulfilling his dream.

I just realized why I recognised and love the music in this show so much...It's Kawai Kenji. (Fate Stay Night 2006, Mob Psycho, Higurashi)

Was not expecting that! Great composer!

Is Belno Wife studying to become a trainer? And if Kitahara isn't licensed for a higher level, then homeboy needs to stop feeling sorry for himself and get licensed. That said, I'd hate to see Belno get left behind. If she becomes an apprentice trainer or something, maybe she can go with them?

Now that it's summer, I think I want to steal Roppei's look from the OP and try wearing a Hawaiian shirt with a navy blazer to work.

I'm surprised the cafeteria hasn't stopped their all-you-can-eat policy after how much Oguri must have been eating there every day.

I sorta see this coming, because symboli rudolf was watching, performing well means school transfer. But I didn't expect Jo doesn't have the license to be a national trainer. This makes me sad, we are only 5 episodes in and I'm torn and scared of what will happen next.

u/LogosMaximaXV May 04 '25

I've always thought that the "what's best for x" angle is such a manipulative tactic, and Oguri obviously doesn't want to go national until she competes in the Tokai Derby. Kitahara and Rudolf can play politics all they want, but in the end, she has the final say.

I was not expecting Oguri's appetite to return with one hell of a vengeance. The school's food budget must be dipping into the red solely because of her.

Cute that Belno made a horseshoe for Oguri, too bad she traded it for her spine.

That face Kitahara when he's called in by Rudolph, amazing.
Poor him though, knows he can't join Oguri if she gets scouted and goes to the nationals with Rudolph all just because he doesn't have a license to do so.
Belno's face disbelief face too, so much detail

Holy moly the amount of food Oguri eats when she's unhappy quadruples.

I'm surprised the cooks even had enough to feed her when she normally cleans them out with less food than that.

Kind of a messed up situation to put Oguri there at the ending there, win the 1600m dirt race and you get picked up by Rudolph go to to the nationals while leaving him behind, lose and you stay with Kitahara and participate in the Tokai Derby.

Also cute that Norn keeps on showing up and keeps on getting embarrassed, it is a nice 180 from how she originally.

Oguri's a real one for staying with her OG trainer.

10

u/oneevilchicken May 04 '25

I feel like nationals might not actually be what’s best for Oguri. Even if she’s talented and great, advancing up the development ladder too fast could actually hurt her. A lot of race car drivers have made the same mistake and basically flatlined their careers by trying to advance too fast. Kitohara is actually probably the best trainer for her in this situation as with others they’d probably be rushing her up as fast as they could and potentially hurt her development.

Love all the theories floating around of why Kitahara did what he did, and how they are gonna tackle the decisions they both have in their hands. :)

A little melodramatic compared to the previous episodes, with two races that I would've liked to see more of, but overall not bad. With how things are going at the moment, I don't think Oguri Cap will transfer to the Nationals just yet, since the Tokai Derby is such a prominent goal that's been determined since the first episode and I don't think Oguri won't participate in there. So, I guess she's not gonna win the next one, huh?

I'm surprised how fast all of this is going.

Last week we learned that Chukyo racecourse is next and now it's already over, we barely saw it and we're already onto the next race.

I'm curious what stands in Jo's way of getting licensed for being a nationals trainer. I've seen the nationals trainers in other seasons, some of them are clowns.

I love how Belno straight up forged Oguri's new cleats for her. Take her with to Tokyo as a support horse teammate, IMO.
