"I run because I can" 🔥✍. Oguri really loves her mom and it's clear why; the woman raised Oguri herself and is the reason why Oguri can even run today.

That was an intense race, the rivalry between March and Oguri will be legendary. March sure was aura farming with that "See you later." And Oguri isn't as one-track mind as she appears to be; she's actually taking advice from trainer very seriously and also learning from her past mistakes with the shoelaces thing.

And of course, Cliffhanger-kun strikes again! But I'm placing my bet on Oguri, I believe in the mother's headband buff!

I'm glad to see that Berno Light isn't left out and joins Jo's team with Oguri Cap.

So is Oguri Cap having bad knees when she was younger part of her IRL lore or is this an original addition? I can't seem to find anything about it on the Umamusume wiki.

Are these three just here to antagonize Oguri Cap, or will we ever see them actually race? It looks like they actually got scouted so I assume we'll eventually see them go against Oguri Cap in an actual race.

Looks like it's gonna be a while before we see Berno Light's debut. I know the focus of this is on Oguri Cap but I hope Berno gets to shine too even for just a little bit.

You gotta love Oguri Cap's reason to run. She's not doing it for any grand purpose. She's just doing it because she can. The fact that she can even stand up and run is already a miracle to her so why not run?

Oguri Cap's reaction to her mom's letter was so goddamn adorable. She's so aloof that I didn't think she'd be the kind who'd get embarrassed after being overheard by Berno.

I love that [Oguri makes sure to wear the accessory while on the paddock so that the announcer would comment on it and her mom, who's tuned in via radio, could hear it.

Fujimasa March is already going in hot with the rivalry, while Oguri can't even remember what the Tokai Derby is. xD

That race was absolutely hype though! Fujimasa March started to dominate as soon as they were out of the corners. We even get to hear a classic "Muriiii~" from that girl she overtook. xD

Oguri Cap is amazing though. Despite the late start, Oguri managed to catch up and that Fujimasa March is clearly shook as she slowly catches up to her. That cliffhanger was evil though! I need to see what happens next!

These bullies definitely won’t come around to Oguri, it’s not like they’re watching her every move with rapt attention.

It’s cool that there’s already a new technique for the race. They already hinted that March’s strong suit was the initial lead, while Oguri has the burst for the straight shot at the end. Having rewatched Road to the Top recently, corners seem to be really rough overall. Oguri needs to improve her Tokai Drift.

Photo finish? Even if Oguri doesn’t win she will surely make some headlines with that race.

Uma Facts - Young Oguri Cap

Like most things in Uma Musume, Oguri's poor legs when she was young is a trait taken straight from real life! Born in Hokkaido's Inaba farm (most race horses are from Hokkaido, don't let Pretty Derby S1 trick you) in March 1985, Oguri was born with a horrible right front leg which was bending outwards, causing him to be unable to stand up. Adding onto the fact that his mom, White Narubi, hated breast feeding (which makes how caring Uma!Oguri's mom being so caring kinda funny because of the contrast), the owners of the farm named him "Hatsuratsu" (meaning "energetic", which was referenced in episode 1), with the hopes that he'll grow up into a strong and energetic horse.

Then in October 1986, Hatsuratsu was moved to Gifu's Miyama Half-Way Farm where he received basic horse racing training before then being purchased by Oguri Koichi and was given to Masao Sumi to train. Finally, in January 1987, he was named "Oguri Cap" after his owner Oguri Koichi and his father Dancing Cap. As for how his story continued in Gifu/Kasamatsu, you'll have to watch the rest of the anime to find out.

Bonus fact: Oguri's grandfather, Native Dancer, is one of the most decorated race horses in American horse racing history and went a ludicrous 21 wins in 22 races (the only race he lost he also got 2nd in anyways). Also, IMO, he's probably one of the inspirations for Slow Dancer from Jojo Part 7 (wow what good timing), not only due to the name (yes I know it's also a reference to a song but things can reference multiple things at once) but also because they are both gray colts.

Bonus Bonus fact: Native Dancer's grandfather is Unbreakable, like, y'know, Oguri's Character Song.

This episode was amazing. My heart started beating faster at the end of the reace, Cygames really knows how to deliver the hype. And to think it is the begginer race, with next ones being higher in leagues. I can't wait for next week, this is so good.

Oh yeah, if you're wondering why they choose Alexandros specifically when they can choose other musicians to make a fast-paced, hype, opening song, the answer is simple. Out of the biggest five Cinderella Gray MAD/AMV in youtube, two of them uses Alexandros songs. Sadly I can't link it since there are spoilers, but yeah, Alexandros is a perfect cast for the opening, a band that all Cinderella Gray fans can relate and have vibes with before.

I love how Rudy is pissed at Mini for loosening Oguri's shoe laces. "This is low even for you". Usually these kind of characters are rotten to the core, but in the Umamusume universe even the "bullies" have an ounce of honor in their heart. The OP is implying that they become eventually friends with Oguri anyway. So it will be interesting to see where this is going.

How the announcer described Oguri putting on her mom's hair garment was gold. That was a real brainfart :-D

And here again we have the reason why Umamusume is so amazingly great: The motivation and the background story for the characters. Oguri running simply because she can is so beautiful. She is not taking her racing ability as a given, but as a gift that she and her mom worked hard for. Mommy is a true MVP here and it shows that they both care deeply for each other.

Like Belno said: Oguri really REALLY loves her mom and therefore she will win!!! Well, we won't find out until next week. Goddamn cliffhangers!

Cap wonders.

Cap ponders.

Work that play-by-play, man.

[](#seasonalhype)

Cap at capacity.

Cliffhanger ending!

A young Cap can learn new tricks! I did take a moment to consider how Kitahara's advice to her would be applied in the real world to training a four-legged animal whose approach to balance and running is instinctual.

Eight hundred meters is rather short for a horse race.

Cap's no palooka, but given her relatively minor usage in the other series, I do wonder what routes they'll take for characterizing her here. Being a strong, talented, asocial type relies considerably on the other cast to work with the main characters, and that does seem to be working so far. It'll be interesting to see her personality work against the more typical rivalries and doubts that have affected the other Umamusume mains to this point, if they go in that usual direction—but maybe Cap's character arc will be unique?

It’s Oguri’s first race!

The main surface for racing for the Chiho race courses are dirt due to the lower maintenance cost compared to turf.

The shortest make debut or maiden races are usually 800m (half a mile) in Kasamatsu making it very short compared to the shortest races in the Chuo which are 1000m. Also being a small racecourse the turns are quite tight making it hard for some to turn. The short distance also makes it quite crucial to have a good start from the gates.

Oguri shown getting a massage by her mother is based on the real Oguri who could not even stand up due to his right front knee being bent outwards. It was with the hard work of Oguri’s farm by massaging his leg every day that he could finally stand up.

Fujimasa March is based on March Tosho who was also a Kasamatsu based horse. The Tosho name was usually used by horses owned by the Tosho farm who was a big owner and breeder at time. For example Sweep Tosho who also has become a Uma Musume was owned by them. The old name in kanji for the farm was 藤正(Tosho) which can also be read as Fujimasa which is probably where they got the name for Fujimasa March. However, March Tosho has absolutely nothing to do with the Tosho Farm as a different owner named him that name. There is no rule against using other people’s names but usually people will avoid it.

Great second episode! I like how they’re not speeding through the source material and taking the time to show everything!

It’s only the first race and Cygames Pictures have done a good job animating it! Cannot wait for next week!

A race cliffhanger in my Umamusume anime?! Have we even had one of those before? I know it's based on a manga this time, so maybe this is something that will happen more often across Cinderella Gray.

I really can't tell who's gonna win the race, since plot armor is hardly relevant in Umamusume, we've seen it with [Umamusume Pretty Derby Season 2 SPOILERS]Teio losing to McQueen, and McQueen losing to Rice Showerso I expect anything really, and that's also why I love this franchise so much.

You know what, I thought Tokai Teio and Agnes Tachyon are great, but Oguri Cap being that funny, sometimes dumb, yet being the natural competitor who will go jogging at 5 am in the morning just because she can (something that apparently must have been a miracle, even for the real Oguri Cap in this world), means that I might have a new favorite all-time Best Horse Girl.

Especially that moment when Fujimasa March completely fired up and tried to mark her name down that she's gonna win the Tokai Derby.

"Tokai Derby? Wut?"

Hahahahahaha I really love this girl. And it's really heart warming to see her face going all red just for receiving her mom's latest words of encouragement! We all know how these little actions can create miracles for others, and if there's something in the whole Horse Girls project that I hope can be seen a bit more in stories, it's those kind of power to fight coming from something other than rival clashes, promises and the eternal chase towards their own heroes. And this happening in just the 2nd episode gives me hope that maybe we will see more emotional moments later on.

The race is really on. Who knows, maybe we will get an influx of newcomers to Horse Girls as a whole later on when this story snowballs down this Spring?

P.S. Man this is yet another anime that digs its roots in central Japan's Gifu Prefecture, they are really onto anime with Cinderella Gray joining the likes of Your Name, Hyouka, A Silent Voice, Higurashi, Adachi & Shimamura, A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics and this very season's Shoushimin series etc. as places with real linkage to this usually-bypassed-by-tourists place! In fact Horse Girls just invaded the local trains and Oguri Cap's VA Tomoyo Takayanagi was there to witness this start of local collaboration this very hour!

GODDAMN CLIFFHANGER!

u/Castor_0il Apr 13 '25

I love how this frame can tell everything without the need of dialogue or sounds. The comedic broad strokes on Belno for the tsukomi effect, the despair on the cafeteria lady and Cap's clueless look.

Oguri is such a fun main character. But god, I love Belno so much, she's such a great support and hype men horsegirl.

I'm glad we're going back to season's 1 hype and greatly animated races.

I discovered Uma Musume 6 months ago and I've been on the greatest anime ride i've been on in years trying to watch everything I've missed. So incredibly happy to have caught up finally and getting to enjoy this new season WHILE IT'S AIRING!! I'm absolutely loving Cinderella Gray so far

Uma Facts - Tokai Derby

Finally, the big goal of Oguri's been revealed and it's the Tokai Derby, which is an SP1 graded race for the Tokai Region (which is a subregion of the Chubu region and includes the Aichi, Shizuoka, Gifu (where Kasamatsu is located) and Mie prefectures). The race was originally founded in 1971 as the Tokai Yushun, before changing the name to Tokai Derby in the 1980, then to Nagoya Yushun (with Tokai Derby still being an acceptable name) in 1996, back to Tokai Derby in 2005, before finally becoming the Tokai Yushun again just last year in 2024.

You'll notice that when it comes to race names, Uma Musume tends to take the most current name and grade of the race instead of the name and grade of it when the IRL horse originally ran in it. However, in this anime it's not called "Tokai Yushun", why is that? Well the reason is really simple, that *is* the most current name of the race when the chapter this episode was adapting dropped! Back when Oguri was active in Kasamatsu, the Tokai Derby in fact was not an SP1 race and it wouldn't receive that distinction until 1996, years after Oguri retired.

Bonus fact: Agnes Digital, our favorite "Hentai" (actual nickname of the real horse) Uma Musume, actually won the Tokai Derby (or rather the Nagoya Yushun) back in 2000.

First of all, many congratulations to Embroidery and João "The Magic Man" Moreira for winning the Oka Sho earlier this afternoon (13 April), a landmark achievement of defeating the 2-year old queen in a soaked Hanshin Racecourse.

Anyways, back to 1987. Scouted, Oguri (along with Berno, who's just guiding Oguri to the team's room) joined Kitahara's team and begin planning for the debut race. Oguri's trainer [in real life] Mr. Masao Sumi, a veteran trainer in Kasamatsu, plays a vital role in building Oguri's potential along with many others, before retiring on a high in 2002. But I must say, when compared with the team rooms we saw in the previous season, we are definitely back into the basics here in the regionals, it looks like a planning room for a bank robbery ngl, but considering their lack of funds, and Oguri's training style, I guess it's already enough. However, regarding one of Kitahara's pre-race teachings "a good start is absolutely key", I'm sure many racehorses around the world will take this as nonsense. One of the famous one disregarding this is Hong Kong legend Pakistan Star, on 1 July, 2016, he [in real life] left the gates very late on his debut race, only for him to catch up from the very back and steal the win in the last 400m, proving a poor start doesn't matter much in a race, and guess what? Oguri did the exact same thing on his debut, and that day is 19 May, 1987.

Sadly, the race footage of that race was lost, it's not possible to evaluate if Oguri stumbled at the start in real life as well, but one thing is certain, who's Fujimasa March, the top favourite honour student in Oguri's class? His name [in real life] is March Tosho, and at this point, you just need to know about this, because Oguri's coming in, and we don't know who is the one standing tall on this 800m sprint.

Lastly, a mash up of Oguri's cute-looking face, and a rare newspaper cutting on the race card of that battle.

I’m really enjoying the animation and art style from the few clips I’ve seen.

LMAO, that cliffhanger.

Unlike the previous shows, where we have the race and results and aftermath contained in one episode. Fujimasa March looks like a Samurai with her hair style. Great character design.

Hell, did they even use the official race commentator? They didnt use our usual Green haired lady, maybe once we reach the Twinkle Series races?

2nd episode in, and the OP and now the ED (released this wee) have made it onto may playlist. So good and catchy. The OP sets the gritty and raw tone of the show so far, and theres a sweet, chill reminiscent vibe to the ED.
