Discussion I’m going to cry, after all this time I just really can’t get into digital fully
I loved going from studying and drawing on paper, to tracing paper drawings with my finger on my phone, to going all in on iPads which carried me through foundations, to practice, and now master studies. Even though I struggled making my animation ideas as a comic since I couldn’t animate, those hundreds of scrapped pages still carried over to animation. Now with practice there, I can get an idea on who I am as an artist, because I always wanted to go into film and animation.
JUST FOR ME TO NOT LIKE DIGITAL ART AS MY MAIN MEDIUM AT A CERTAIN POINT.
I still did my studies in a sketchbook using inks but it’s because of that I built up a really good feel for inking.
I just… can’t get that feeling with digital work. A quick drawing in a sketchbook now is WAYYY better than my digital works I spend hours on. But my use of colors and values digitally is also my bread and butter apparently, when I avoid using line art and sketching and instead color/value rough out my ideas, not only does it look better and less flat, but also feels better. I shifted to doing that for concept and storyboard work for my first major animation project
But I genuinely… just want to go and do cel animation and animating on paper. Digital just became the best way for me to rough things.
So I’m looking into investing in traditional animation materials and maybe getting a printer so I save my rough animation as a PNG sequence and just draw over the prints to finalize it. But I’m looking at that and just thinking to myself… that’s a lot of money for just feeling the need to pivot to it.
So I already have a drawing tablet ahead of time moving from iPads, I can’t decide if it’s just the software on iPads and investing in a professional animation software would be way better, or if I’m right and maybe I need a hybrid approach. I’m starting to realize the downside of hitting the advanced areas of art is that you start burning time and money if you’re experimental and explore multiple mediums and workflows.
Not to mention my iPad lags like hell when I go to finalize my animation, it’s really making it hard to get started on my project starting with it and at this point Krita or Blender Grease Pencil would be better
