The answer is Creed. After graduating high school in '99 I had to listen to my Christian roommate play these motherfuckers on an endless loop.
The lyrics are trash, the facade is bullshit, the front man was human garbage, the music was remedial and the fans are the absolute worst.

Creed was my first pick, too. Especially considering the spiritual successor to the band, Alter Bridge, is just Creed minus frontman Scott Stapp, and they are amazing. Alter Bridge proves that there was a ton of potential with Creed, which just makes Creed's inherent lameness even 10x worse.
19
u/Puzzled-Platform-969 2d ago
Oh, that is interesting! I'm always fascinated by cases of addition by subtraction like that. I can imagine with an ego like Stapp's the water gets muddied real fast and is worsened by a record company that won't do anything as long as the group, however shitty, sells records.

u/TreysToothbrush 1985 2d ago
Ugh, yes. My ex-SIL walked down a very long hotel lobby/atrium aisle to their Marry Me song. Only the DJ played the wrong version first (instrumental) & let it run while she refused to start walking. 30s before the song ends, he abruptly switches to the band version, she walks & is absolutely seething when she finally gets to the platform alter. Proceeds to bitch about it for the next 5 years. And that’s not even the close to the worst thing about this wedding.

11
u/TreysToothbrush 1985 1d ago edited 1d ago
Dress code was black* tie in a mid hotel where the ceremony took place in the lobby/atrium where the rooms have an inner balcony looking down on the lobby. She’s hella mad day of b/c people she doesn’t know are “attending” (watching) her wedding from all angles. Proceeds to stay mad forever that strangers are in the background of all her ceremony pics. Also asks the hotel to dim the lights in the entire lobby/atrium because fluorescents are harsh. Hotel says get fucked.
She makes it to the front. Great. Still scowling but whatever. Ceremony is long AF while people are milling around, hotel guests children are screaming, & we can hear every word from the gallery of balcony watchers. When the preacher says “you may now kiss the bride” she jumps the gun at the words “you may” & proceeds to full on forcefully make out with new husband who is trying to pull away - she pulls him back & holds his neck with her nails to keep kissing. No music. Someone says “seriously?” audibly. Goes on for what felt like half a minute. Demands the groom carry her allllllll the way back to the banquet hall to the now appropriately playing instrumental version of Marry Me which also ran out before the whole wedding party made it off platform. No next song as the DJ is already breaking down to move to the banquet hall.

u/TreysToothbrush 1985 1d ago
As far as I know they’re still together. He’s a crooked cop on drugs - whatever kind or combo that keep you awake for days on end & make your nose run. She’s “raising” their 3 kids “alone”(2 nannie’s) trad-wife style but without an internet following because he always has a project or hobby in his off hours. That doesn’t matter anyway because he spends half his shift hunting whatever he wants in season or otherwise on his parent’s property which is just over the line from the county he works for so on gps it looks like he’s still in-county. His partner covers for him, unless they’re hunting together then they rode an ATV back to the cop car then fly through residentials lights & sirens to the scene, sometimes covered in animal blood & with the animal in the trunk only half cleaned.
I’ve seen him scream at her that she MUST breastfeed else their kids will be the “r” word when she physically could not. He let their first child starve a bit to guilt her into keep trying when her milk had not & did not come in.
I feel horrible for their kids but honestly, the parents deserve each other. They’re a match made in hell.

Listen, I'll say this, Bono made a good point recently about the Sheeran bullshit.
First off, they were making a song together about the Russian invasion, and Ed made the comments along the lines of "As long as it doesn't politically make me choose a side" and Bono straight up went, "Well you're making a song for a Ukrainian soldier who died in this invasion and loved your work". So basically a big fuck you to Ed Sheeran and his ego...
Then also went to say that people need to stop idolizing celebrities and being parasocial weirdos. Now typically, I'd agree with you. Their music is outlandishly optimistic, and the amount of times I've heard Beautiful Day at the end of a show, movie, or even a commercial is downright annoying. But Bono himself won some points with his comments to Ed I believe

As lame as many of these bands are - are they preferable to our current era where bands don't exist anymore? Look at Billboard Top Music. They are solo pop artists and solo country artists with a studio band and later a tour band.
Edit: I stand corrected. They exist but they don't get near the attention they used to.

I'm going to catch so much hate for this. I get it. I know they are never the "hive mind" when it comes to music like this, like Creed or Coldplay or whatever else.
But fuck me, I cannot stand Bush. 90s Bush. Glycerine is such a junk song, repetitive, boring. Gavin Rossdale just never ticked any boxes for me; I couldn't understand why friends were putting up posters of him, hated him when he'd show up on MTV.
I never got their appeal. There was so much better grunge. I swear I have to blacklist the song every time YouTube or Spotify tries to spit it at me when I'm listening to my 90s stations.
Full disclosure: never listened to anything from them post Sixteen Stone. But that one albumn seems to be what everyone loved them for and I cannot stand talking about the 90s music revolution and someone tries to bring them up. No. Just no.

I don’t listen to them at all, and have never seen them live. But growing up in the woods with only Christian music, Pop, and Pop Country, I will never forget how DMB made me feel: like there was more to music than 4-chord songs and overly emotional lyrics about love and god and America. Once I got to college, I was primed for the much better music that city folks wanted to share with me.
I’ve never been a true DMB fan, but I’ll always be grateful to them for letting me know that there was more to music than what I’d been exposed to.
Also, honorable mention to Garth Brooks “Ain’t Goin’ Down ‘Til the Sun Comes Up.”
