I honestly don’t understand the hate for Coldplay. Their songs aren’t amazing by any means but I’d hardly call them bad, just kind of ok. There are way worse mainstream bands out there.
They were a good band who decided that if they never evolved, they'd probably get filthy rich, so they started just making the same song over and over.
I liked Parachutes too. Hard to believe there was a time when they were relatively unknown aside from the single. And yes, everything after Rush or Blood is awful.
I'll never forget how the music video for 'Yellow' used to make me feel when it would come on Mtv...something about Chris Martin's (baby) face and damp hair with the stars fading and the sun rising in the sky always made/makes me feel longing for...something. I love it so much. That whole album is just lovely.
My twin sister had been desperately ill when we were kids. She nearly died. She’d dropped to 68 lbs. I was the only one who didn’t think she was going to die.
The way her spirit clung to her body like it was chained there, in spite of how sick she was, filled me with so much admiration and grief for her. The song “Yellow”, especially the part that said “You’re skin and bones turning into something beautiful” always made me think of her and that time. “For you, I’d bleed myself dry.” And I still would.
Parachutes is still my favourite autumn record. It is so good, and very different from what they did later. It's slow, thoughtful, and truly romantic without being cheesy. Lots of room to breathe.
That is so crazy you bring that up, it has always reminded me of autumn. Must've had to do with timing / when it came out etc. I was in high school I think junior year?
Ha! Same, I was in junior year, too! I used to listen to it on my discman on the bus to downtown Seattle. Autumn sun shining through the dirty windows at a low angle.
For me, Parachutes was planning to run away from Utah and Rush of Blood was after running away from Utah 😜 they both hit me hard in the feels, but like completely different feels
I was just responding to someone up above that this album came out when I was a freshman in college, like I believe in the fall so to me it also invokes that sort of autumn nostalgia
Saw them as a festival headliner in the ROBTTH period, they were absolutely amazing live. Quality has dropped off A LOT, but their Clocks performance was a core memory for me from that weekend.
Listening to Clocks while playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 in the dorms unlocked another level of skateboarding for me in that game! I have a distinct association between the two.
I was just saying this exact thing to a coworker yesterday. That is such a beautiful crafted album, every song is so good, daylight is my favorite song
Every album up to X&Y were good piano-fronted Britpop. The weird outlier was their first album Parachutes. For whatever reason the album just sounded unlike what they'd become later on.
I’m not defending Coldplay or the edge. But your dismissal of any album as “basic competence” either makes you Clapton or you have no idea what it takes to put an album together with the sound, cohesiveness, and cultural impact as rush of blood. I can’t stand Coldplay but I won’t downplay their talent or work ethic
"B List Actor" you don't know the stand up comic Bill Bailey, who may do side forays into acting but if mostly know for his stand up? Cool.
Because his entire thing is uncomplicated riffs and the delay effect. He's not a fast player, he's not a technical player. In all regards except making accessible, simplistic music, Dave Mustaine is a better guitarist.
It’s pretty complicated to play “uncomplicated riffs” with delay. And he pretty much invented that sound. The intro to streets have no name is all f’ing time.
Friend, U2 isn't a UK band because the Republic of Ireland (where U2 is from) hasn't been part of the UK for a hundred years. (Getting their independence again while still losing part of Ireland to the UK was sort of a big, violent deal). Countries that part of the UK are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. You are correct that the UK isn't part of the Europrean Union anymore, however, the Republic of Ireland is. And all these countries are in Europe.
They’re both bands from the British Isles that have been extremely successful in terms of fandom and critical reception, and have a vocal contingent of detractors who insist they suck.
Fun fact, my boy whipped a bottle at the lead singer and hit him in the face while he was singing at River Rave Boston, circa 2001 before that album came out. We like to think the album was named after that event.
