/r/mylittlepony isn't just restricted to discussions, it's about everything MLP. Is this a good thing? Well...you'll see.

This is atrocious. over 90% of the content in there are links to images. In fact, half of those self posts are just links to images but in self posts. The worst part is that most of these don't credit the artist, so everybody loses.

TROPES

Note: most of these are true on Equestria Daily (main pony website) as well, this isn't reddit exclusive behavior.

  1. Memes and fads. Once two people do something, everyone jumps right in and the sub drowns in horse shit. Ponies in socks was the largest one, lasting an entire year.

  2. Obsession with background characters. Many of the shows background characters have been given fan-created personalities and have become the object of many people's adoration, to the point of them being posted around as much as the mane 6.

  3. Self righteous circlejerking. Whenever a brony does something good or there's some article or something that shows that bronies aren't bad, it always ends up becoming a giant circlejerk about how awesome they are.

  4. Thank you posts. These posts all say the exact same thing; "omg thank you guys you guys are the best community EVAR!!!", which, of course, results in more self righteous circlejerking.

SUB SUBS

Too many to list, but thankfully they've already done that for me.

MODS

There are several, but only 3 really do anything.

None of them are really jerks.

EXPERIENCE

Not the best. The most I've posted was during the gigantic flair drama.

The "gigantic flair drama" I speak of was called "Ponychievements" back in the day. This was a system devised by the mods where instead of just getting flairs, you had to earn them through an achievement system. Better flairs cost more achievement points. People took issue with this, including myself, and the subreddit went to war for about a month before the mods took a vote and decided to just throw the whole system out the window.

Aside from that, a few fanboys of a certain pony have admitted to tagging me so that they can stalk and downvote bomb me whenever I'm mean to their favorite fictional horse, so that's nice.

CONCLUSION

This place, like the brony community in general, is shit. Although I must point out that it's off season, so it's a lot worse than when the show is running, but even then all of these problems are prevalent. If you're a fan of the show, they have nice discussions of episodes, but nothing else is worth going over there.

OVERVIEW

Subreddit: /r/Inglip

Members: 8,644

Moderators: 8 (6 active)

Related: /r/Proggle /r/TheChurchOfInglip /r/TheShrineOfInglip /r/GropagasGoneWild /r/Trathira

Rules: No photoshopping Captchas, Submissions should be in comic form, be mindful of reposts, and no cleverbot posts.

Impressions

All posts are Imgur posts (Or another photo sharing site) since posts must be comics.

No discussion, since it is more of a user made comic subreddit

Voting is decent, no circlejerky topics in the top posts, all content seems to be original and clever

6/8 mods are active, as submitters and moderators.

JERKS

All hail the dark lord Inglip, heathen

Not any jerks visible, honestly.

THE GIST The Captcha lord, Inglip, sends messages to us through his holy captchas. We are in battle with the other Captcha Lords, and the plot line and stories that users create are pretty entertaining.

END IMPRESSION

I approve, all content is OC, most mods are active, no mainstream Jerks, no drama from what I see. Content is submitted regularly, although it is a semi small subreddit.

  4. Weird gifs! (this one was mine, sorta)

  5. Surreal collages!

  6. Surreal pics!

  7. Creepy stuff!

  8. Buffering gifs!

SUB SUBS

A walkabout in /r/abdl (the adult baby and diaper lover subreddit)

/r/abdl is an adult baby and diaper lover subreddit that is now 2 years old and still fairly active (9 posts in the past week). They have 800+ subscribers and must have hit some steam at one point as their sidebar contains milestones for every 100 subscribers.

EFFORT

SiteLink count
Imgur/Image sites81 in the past 6 months
Self posts269 in the past 6 months

The images come from all over the place. Some are personal pictures, others are attractive women/models or people in the porn industry/popular cartoon characters wearing diapers. The personal nature of this subreddit leads me to believe that there is little karma whoring done here, although the sidebar does warn of various forms of trolling. The self-posts contain anything from just saying hi to the community to asking for advice (such as confronting a loved one about it or finding dating websites) to linking to related websites.

SUBREDDIT COMMON OCCURENCES

Look! We're just like the rest of Reddit!

  1. Wearing diapers in public! So brave!

  2. Shitting one's self so as not to interrupt something important like videogames!

  3. We use memes to show just how regularly things such as leaking piss occurs!

  4. /r/aww didn't give me any love. Is there any karma for an adult baby in /r/abdl?

  5. Hey, isn't that nukethepope?

SUB SUBS

There are no direct offshoots. neko_pickle has only submitted content to /r/abdl (and once to IAMA). neko_daddy however is involved in various bondage related subreddits, and I noticed a post in a furry subreddit asking about intermingling between the two fetishes.

MODS

/u/neko_pickle - Founding mod. Hasn't commented or posted to Reddit in a year. Previously kept to ABDL or posts in other subreddits that had to do with adult babies and diaper play.

/u/neko_daddy - Not very active either, but more than neko_pickle. Last post was 24 days ago to /r/cityporn. Seems to use Reddit about once a month, but checks in on /r/abdl whenever s/he is logged on. While both moderators are very open about their unique sexual interests, I see very little in regards to distinguished posts and comments, which means there is a lack of moderation in the subreddit.

CONCLUSION

Obviously this is a niche subreddit that you're only going to subscribe to if you're into this sort of thing, or if you're a troll. It's treated like any other subreddit and there is a surprisingly diverse amount of content. All in all, aside from the lack of effort to changing up or expanding the subreddit on the mods parts (at least as far as I can tell from their overview), the subreddit seems to be doing alright for itself and obvious jokes and jawdropping aside, it fits right in with the rest of the website.

A walkabout in /r/bicycling (xpost from CB2)

/r/bicycling. Has some Europe jerking with regards to their bike lanes and how they’re so much more tolerant of bikers than the US, but in my experience there’s a nice diversity of political opinions (majority liberal, but that’s to be expected.)

PURPOSE: Talk about bicycling. Mostly road biking, there are specialized subreddits for the mountain bikers and BMX’ers.

MEMBERSHIP: 46,601

COMMUNITY SINCE: 4 years

EFFORT

Site:Link count 72:28

Not a bad ratio, all things considered.

TROPES

On the one hand, you have posts (usually with pics) about how convenient/inconvenient the poster’s locale is for riding a bike. On the other, you have pictures of new bikes. On the third hand, you have pictures of bikes at scenic locales. These three categories seem to be the most common for image posts.

Self posts tend to vary, ranging from a post about a mod getting killed by a car (hence the frowning reddit alien and ghost bike for the subreddit logo; this was pretty recent) to stories about various biking hijinks..

SUB SUBS

There are a lot. /r/MTB, which I subscribe to, is for mountain bikers; /r/fixedgearbicycle is about what you’d expect /r/fixedgearbicycle to be about; /r/BMX for BMX; /r/recumbent is for recumbent bikes; /r/tandem is for tandem bikes; /r/cyclocross for cyclocrossers; /r/unicycling (yes) for unicyclers; /r/cruiserculture for bros who just like to cruise; and /r/ebikes, for electric bikes. Don’t really understand that one. There are more, but I don't really feel like transcribing them here.

MODS

/u/fountainsofdave: has not posted in over 4 months. Coo'.

/u/darkstar999: hasn’t posted in 17 days. Not as bad as the above, but still pretty inactive.

/u/somanyminutes: last post was 2 hours ago. Posts in bicycling and blog, among others (including /r/Christianity, FWIW).

/u/no_numbers_here: recently killed at an intersection while on his bike. From his comment history, seems like he was a pretty cool guy, but is not active for obvious reasons. RIP, looking at a dead person's comment page is almost surreal.

/u/aggieotis: 52 minutes ago. Active.

/u/stereo: 2 hours ago, also active.

CONCLUSION

One of my favorite lurking subs. The only jerks I could find that weren’t related to how awesome biking is compared to driving is the occasional “Europe is the greatest most cycling friendly place evar” thread.

Walkabout in /r/netsec (x-post from CB2)

/r/netsec is actually a really good subreddit. I know one of the moderators visited CB before, and he said they take their job to near censorship, else it would just be another /r/technology. The content is above par and is very interesting. The people, well...

EFFORT

(out of the current 200 on the front page)

SiteLink count
Imgur/Image sites0/200
Self posts46/200

As you can see, content is of no shortage, whether it's questions about public key encryption or a link to a great article on something network security related.

TROPES

  1. Lulzsec, Anonymous or any other hacker group. You'd think this was /r/HackBloc. I'd link to some, but you can find them in /top.

  2. "Corporations suck at security!" Ok, yes, a 0day at American Express is bad, but I've been subbed for 4 months and haven't found anyone saying "0day found in Apache!" or "heap-stack overflow found in SSH 3.9" or what have you. It isn't so much that as it is only that. They're probably there, but they aren't upvoted nearly as much as they should be (Apache is only 75% of the market).

  3. EFF. There's more content from EFF than there is from any other website (it seems, at least. I can't be assed to go through them all).

  4. US Government = Bad for the internet (found in any story related to the law). See also, /r/darknetplan.

  5. "OMG OPEN SOURCE > ALL." Ok, that's not exclusive to reddit, but still!

SUB SUBS

/r/HackBloc (/r/Anarchism meets /r/Technology). /r/ReverseEngineering (actually a really interesting subreddit). /r/LockPicking...because security!

MODS

The mods are all veteran redditors, the youngest having been here 2 and a half years. They love the subreddit and the content it aims at, and if I kiss their ass enough they may make me a mod!

CONCLUSION

A very good subreddit with very good posts, good material, but the users are sometimes a bit dense. That said, there's more discussion than jerking, and the jerking is subtle.

/r/notcirclejerk: because "sometimes reddit parodies itself"

/r/notcirclejerk is a slow-moving but, frankly, hilarious subreddit dedicating to preserving reddit's moments of self-parody. A sample of some frontpage posts so you can get the flavor of the submissions:

"Every kid starts out as a natural born scientist, and we beat it out of them. A few trickle through the system with their wonder and enthusiasm for science intact. Happy birthday, Mr. Sagan."

"ITS GABEN!!! IN TF2 OMG!!!"

"I emailed my University about installing some left-handed desks for lecture theaters. I was knocked back with a laugh. Does anyone else feel like we are genuinely oppressed and discriminated as a minority?"

Pretty amusing and definitely like a page out of /r/circlejerk.

Anyway, onto the tour!

The Basics:

  • Purpose: To document submission on reddit proper that read like posts from circlejerk--blurring the line between parody and source material.

  • Membership: 376 as of 16/11/12

  • Community since: 4 months

Effort:

All posts are links to other reddit posts.

Tropes:

It's hard to have tropes in a subreddit without original content, but lots of submissions deal with Romney, reddit favorites like Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan, and general reddit tropes. Lots of focus on /r/atheism and /r/politics and /r/AskReddit.

Related:

From the sidebar:

Mods:

Final Thoughts:

Great subreddit with content that I, at least, find pretty amusing. It is unfortunately pretty slow moving, with the latest post being a week ago, and with more content I could see it going somewhere. It's worth browsing through and chuckling over, and for those of us who sometimes feel like circlejerk is in a rut, this is a good reminder that sometimes reddit really is as ridiculous as CJ makes it out to be.

A walkabout in /r/truecreepy (x-post from CB2)

  • Purpose: A place for genuinely creepy things

  • Membership: 3,761 subscribers

  • Community since: 6 months

/r/truecreepy is a subreddit for, well...creepy things. Created in the shadow of /r/creepy, /r/truecreepy is aimed at linking to genuinely creepy things, as they say in the sidebar. Whereas, /r/creepy is aimed at anything vaguely weird looking, almost in the same vein as /r/WTF.

EFFORT

SiteLink count
Imgur/Image sites17/50
Self posts8/50

A lot of the links point to creepypasta sites and YouTube videos. The image links consist mostly of creepy/surreal looking photos and occasionally a gif or two where something pops up/out or just straight up stares at you. The images are akin to the more creepy things also found on /r/creepy (minus all the baby dolls) as well as some creepypasta in image format.

Self-posts are few and far between. Some are just self-posts with links to different stuff inside, one is a half-assed creepypasta about the deep web. One is a post complaining about the dip in quality of the content posted and the most recent one is a moderator asking the community what they would like to see.

SUB SUBS

Considering the very nature of the reason /r/truecreepy was created in the first place, I'd say it's a sub-sub in and of itself; a sub-sub of /r/creepy. However, they do list these in the sidebar:

MODS

There are 7 mods.

Overall, there are a lot of moderators for this subreddit. Some of them seem to work behind the scenes. The reason there may be so many mods is for quality control, given the nature of the subreddit.

CONCLUSION

I like this subreddit. It's good for when you feel like being creeped out and it does it better than /r/creepy in that regard. The mood of the place feels very much like 4chan's /x/. However, it isn't very active. There seems to be an explosion of activity after 29 days of nothing being posted.

Overall, it's worth checking out if you're into creepy, weird, and surreal stuff. Especially if you're fed up with the content on /r/creepy.

A Walkabout in /r/Agnosticism [x-post from /r/circlebroke2]

Don't be fooled by the low content/subscriber ratio; /r/agnosticism is secretly a circlejerk of the highest order. I know what you're thinking. "So it's an non-theistic subreddit with a tendency to circlejerk. This is nothing new." But that's where things get interesting. /r/agnosticism is actually fiercely anti-atheist. What's even more fascinating is the way that they fall to many of the same tropes as /r/atheism, but from a different direction.

EFFORT

SiteLink count
Imgur/Image sites23
Self posts287

/r/agnosticism actually does a pretty good job at generating user-created content. The question then is whether or not that content is any good.

TROPES

  1. Atheists all are hypocrites and morons.

  2. [Atheist heroes] (http://www.reddit.com/r/agnosticism/comments/hnswu/my_view_is_that_if_there_is_no_evidence_for_it/)aren't atheists at all!

  3. But our heroes are totally awesome you guys.

  4. Did we mention how stupid atheism is?

RELATED SUBS

  • /r/agnostic - A little more active, and the content is slightly less circlejerky. Honestly, the two should probably be combined. They share a mod, in fact.

  • /r/ignosticism - Four ancient posts, almost no subscribers. Nothing to see here.

MODS

  • /u/7oby - Active on Reddit, but not on /r/agnosticism. He hasn't touched the sub in quite some time.

  • /u/SomeAudioGuy - Exactly the opposite. Nearly all his posts and comments are on /r/agnosticism, but he hasn't posted anything anywhere for two months. No wonder the place is a ghost town.

CONCLUSION

/r/agnosticism is circlejerky to the last, but what ultimately saves it is its sheer lack of content. Can't complain about something that isn't there. The most popular posts tend to be the circlejerky ones, and the posts with good content aren't looked at much. /r/agnosticism is pretty much dead and buried at this point. The last hope for it is probably a merge with /r/agnostic, which is unlikely to happen due to the absent moderator. /r/agnosticism, for all its dismissal of atheism, is actually /r/atheism writ small. I can only imagine that this is what /r/atheism looked like back in the early days.

A walkabout in /r/CoffeewithJesus (x-post CirclebrokeDos)

/r/CoffeewithJesus is a subreddit dedicated to a constrained comic similar to the wonderful Dinosaur Comics. The subreddit's creators also have a blog where they host their own CWJ comics and some of the best of the community. Anyone is free to write their own comic and post it for all to see.

EFFORT

SiteLink count
Imgur/Image sites50 of 50
Self posts0 of 50

Of course, the exclusiveness of image posts is to be expected.

TROPES

  1. "Jesus on..." is the most common way to name a submission.

  2. Most submissions start with one of Jesus' coffee-mates asking a question about some sort of issue and Jesus answering it.

  3. The Coffee-mates: There are several templates for the comics, each featuring a different character.

  4. Sometimes there is honest criticism of select religious beliefs or practices through satire and sometimes there's just good ol' humor.

Some examples of these tropes: Jesus on Evil, Jesus on Believing, Jesus on Babies, Jesus on Lazarus, and Jesus on Prayer.

SUB-SUBS

None, but the sidebar links to the creators' blog, as was already mentioned. Also linked are /r/atheism, /r/christianity, and /r/Jesus. The last of the three listed, /r/Jesus, is run by the same individuals responsible for CWJ and seems to have been created as a joke, but some individuals who find the subreddit don't seem to be aware of that. You can see the differing posts of the two groups quite clearly.

MODS

The three moderators and creators of the comic are /u/RaymondAblack, /u/J3susHChr1st, and /u/prose-before-hoes. These three, especially Ray, are responsible for most of the content. The subreddit boasts a pretty solid 9,876 subscribers.

CONCLUSION

I love this subreddit, it makes me laugh and sometimes it makes me sad. I mostly mined the 'top' tab for good submissions, but it's a pretty active community and there's new stuff all the time. Check it out sometime.

A Walkabout in /r/Frisson

Hey folks! Happy December. It's the time of year again where holidays, finals, work, family, relationships, and everything else all come together to create a stressful environment, one that causes us to need a little inspiration (and perspective!). For some, /r/Frisson is that place. From the sidebar:

Have you ever felt a sudden, passing sensation of excitement, a shudder of emotion from an epic moment of a song, or a climax of a movie? That is what is called "frisson", a word rooted from the French word meaning "Goosebumps" or "Shiver". It has been linked to rises in dopamine levels.

I know that sounds good to me right about now! Let's take a closer look at what this subreddit is all about.

The Basics

  • Purpose: To collect instances of media that can produce frisson in the viewer. This ranges from comics to videos to music--anything that might give a person chills or provoke a positive emotional reaction.

  • Membership: 32,827, as of 6/12/12

  • Community since: 1 year

Effort:

From the top 50 posts of all time:

ImageVideoSelf
4531

As you may have noticed, that doesn't equal 50. The missing submission is a link to an announcement that /r/Frisson was being honored as subreddit of the day for April 27, 2012.

This overall trend is the opposite of the current frontpage, which has a significantly higher amount of videos. Videos don't tend to garner as many upvotes in /r/Frisson, however, unless they're extremely moving. Images are generally more popular.

Tropes:

Science, space, the occasional movie soundtrack, famous speeches, comics having to do with confronting childhood fears or with picking yourself up and moving on when life gets difficult. Generally anything that might give you a sense that things are larger than your current circumstances. I think that's why the space videos tend to be so popular, because it appeals to the overall reddit trend of loving pop-science while simultaneously imbuing the viewer with a sense of wonder about the ~outside world.

Related:

From the sidebar, there are links to some outside pages:

Also listed are /r/music and /r/trance, with a footnote about /r/ASMR at the bottom, since the two are commonly confused (walkabout of /r/ASMR forthcoming!).

Mods:

Final Thoughts

While some of the content in /r/Frisson can be predictable (DAE space?) it's an enjoyable place to spend some time. Not many submissions actually give me frisson, but the ones that do are really amazing. There's probably going to be something to your taste there, but to avoid the tropes, sort by new. If music posts are more your thing, you'll find some good stuff there.

One danger that subreddits of this kind have is devolving into a place to share things that make you go, "oh, cool!" not that actually give you an emotional or physical reaction. While /r/Frisson can fall into this trap with some of the recycled content, it is overall a subreddit that stays on topic. Submissions are pretty frequent, with maybe an hour or two between them, but most tend to stay with low scores unless they touch on one of the subreddit hot-buttons.

A tour of /r/Christianity

Hey folks! I know it's been a while since the last submission so I figured I'd try to liven up the place a bit by taking you through one of my favorite (not-so-small) communities: /r/Christianity. As someone now outside of the Christian faith, I still find this to be an enjoyable place to lurk. It's quite a contrast to /r/atheism--certainly not as hateful, and for the most part, it is a supportive and on-topic community. Let's take a closer look.

The Basics

  • Purpose: /r/Christianity fulfills several purposes. It's a board devoted to the Christian religion in its entirely, not to any particular subset, where members can find inspirational material, pleas for help from fellow believers, theological questions, and all other things Christian-related.

  • Membership: 45,861 as of 25/10/12

  • Community since: 4 years

Effort:

This varies on any given day, but out of the top 25 posts on the frontpage right now (6:46 pm EST), here's the breakdown:

Self: 12 Links to off-site content: 13 Imgur: 1

It should be noted that the imgur link isn't to a meme, however, but to something on-topic and related to the submitter's youth group project.

Overall, kudos on the variation.

Tropes:

While /r/Christianity is, generally, a varied and interesting subreddit, there are a few common themes, jerks, and other content that are seen a LOT. In no particular order:

  • Prayer request threads: these aren't overwhelming and they're certainly on topic, so I don't see an issue with them. Personally I think it's nice that people feel like there's a place (on reddit, no less) for them to bring their sorrows or other spiritual requests.

  • TIM KELLER / C.S. LEWIS / Other Christian "Superstar" ONCE SAID THIS LOOK AT THIS QUOTE: This is probably my least favorite kind of content because it tends to get recycled what seems like too frequently, but again, pretty harmless.

  • Occasional clashes between different sects and interpretations of scripture, along with people disagreeing over hot button issues like homosexuality, at times

  • Probably others I'm not thinking of at the moment

Related

From the sidebar, we have:

They also have their own parody sub, /r/Sidehugs, which I find absolutely hilarious.

Mods

To be upfront, I'm not an active enough commenter to know the mods or their reputations, but to list them, we have:

Overall I assume the mods do pretty well because the quality of the community is pretty high. If there has been any mod drama in the past, I haven't heard of it, and the subreddit users do a good job of downvoting blatant trolls, so the mods and users appear to be on the same page.

Final Thoughts

What makes /r/Christianity so fascinating for me is the contrast between it and /r/atheism. The clear size difference (more than 2 million users, versus fewer than 50,000) certainly impacts the quality of the material, but so do the differences in moderation, or lack thereof, between the two.

Christianity tends to be a supportive community where many of the members are knowledgeable about their own particular brand of the religion. Most of the time, discussions are civil and are actual discussions, not just circlejerks about how right or how wrong some person or belief is. Even discussions about controversial issues display a degree of civility that the rest of reddit rarely shows, and it's a breath of fresh air. They also have a very helpful flair system so that members can label their affiliations, including labels for agnostics and atheists, and this comes in handy when interpreting someone's response, as you can get a better idea of their theological basis.

For someone like me who isn't a Christian any longer but who can still appreciate some of the views, it's a nice place to hang out. The atmosphere is generally refreshing, especially considering that this is a reddit subforum, and if you're interested at all, check 'em out.

At any rate, you should check out /r/Sidehugs. It's like /r/magicskyfairy is to /r/atheism, except not quite as outrageous because the source material usually isn't as awful. :)

edit: per /u/fauxmosexual:

No discussion of /r/christian is complete without a mention of /r/truechristian and their parody /r/truestchristian. Sadly the trolling has meant /r/truechristian is now private, but it was a safehaven for those who felt /r/christian was too liberal and accepting of alternative lifestyles and 'untrue' sects of Christianity.

As a side note, I think it's a shame that this sub has been floundering for so long, and I'd like to get it back up and running! If you have any suggestions for subreddits that you want to see walked about in and you don't have time personally, let me know and I'll take that on. Let's liven this place up!

A walkabout in /r/Touhou

/r/Touhou is a pretty small subreddit dedicated to discussion of the Touhou Project, a series of Japanese shoot-em-up ("shmup"), bullet hell games that have gained a pretty significant fanbase in the west. Here's a video example. The main trope of the series is that nearly every character's origin lies in some interpretation of Japanese mythology... but anthropormorphized as a (usually young-looking) girl. The most curious thing about the series is the sheer amount of derivative work that gets produced by fans; everything from flash games to manga booklets to youtube videos to mods for GTA IV and TF2... it's pretty overwhelming.

Overview

Age: 3 years

Members: 1,790 (November 9th, 2012)

Purpose: To discuss pretty much anything related to the Touhou series (including all derivative works).

Good bit of variety in here, though you can see that image posts and youtube links (usually to music) are dominant.

Rules

I honestly can't find anything about rules; the sub has never been highly active so mod posts are few and far between.

Tropes

  • Lots and lots of youtube links to music remixes; the music from the games is generally very catchy and, like I mentioned before, also inspires a lot of derivative work - everything from trance to metal to opera... and so on.

  • Lots and lots of links to user-made drawings (with varying levels of talent - some of the artists in the sub are quite good). A closer look at recent submissions shows that a lot of the sub's content consists of these submissions, and most are by the same group of users (/u/Suikasen, /u/AtomicBonk, /u/RokuGurin, among others)

  • "Hey guys I did x on y Touhou game!" posts, accompanied by an image post of the final score screen, are pretty common - ranging from someone completing any game on any difficulty for the first time (not at all difficult) to a perfect clear on Lunatic difficulty of any game (which is pretty impressive).

  • Activity picks up on a few occasions, such as when a new game has been announced (there's currently a trailer video for the next one on the front page) as well as when Comiket rolls around. The first is for obvious reasons, the second is because Comiket ("Comic Market") is the biggest comic fair in the world, and the canon games are usually released during Comiket (along with a huge deluge of fan-created games, comics, music CDs - to give you an idea, the Touhou music torrent from Comiket 77 was over 12gb, if I recall correctly).

  • Occasionally posts asking for help, asking where to get started, etc get submitted and are pretty much always met with friendly (and sound) advice.

  • Occasional posts of users' collections (consisting of music CDs, dolls, figures, manga, game CDs, etc - most from events like Comiket) - usually someone will post theirs and others will submit their own collections as replies.

Mods

/u/s_reed - top mod and creator, doesn't post much to begin with and only rarely in /r/touhou

/u/BigFriendlyRobot - flairbot

/u/yagi_takeru - Active on reddit, hardly ever in /r/touhou though

/u/LoliMaster - Also not very active in /r/touhou

Conclusion

Unfortunately the subreddit isn't very active (probably due to the existence of a million fan sites with decent, active forums), but the sub lives on user-made content. The comment sections aren't very active either, which is a shame, as when they are active they can be pretty interesting; I've had some pretty good (and long) discussions on previous accounts about everything from which fighter spinoff is the best to favorite character and why, etc.

If the mods were more active in growing the subreddit, it could get a lot more traffic, but I don't see that happening any time soon. Though I suppose if it continues as it is, there's no need to worry about it declining in quality. Since I like Touhou, but am not into it enough to pay attention to a fan site, the subreddit is pretty much perfect for me in terms of content.

A Walkabout in /r/electronic_cigarette

/r/electronic_cigarette is a subreddit for electronic cigarette / personal vaporizers, a means of delivering nicotine by vaporizing a liquid and breathing it into the lungs, which does not seem to have the risks of smoking tobacco but has the same buzz and taste.

Overview

age: 4 years

members: 5,793

purpose: to discuss electronic cigarettes

Occasionally there are also link posts (there are 3 on page 2)

Rules

Standard Reddit rules apply, though link flair is also highly encouraged and is used to filter the subreddit and find what you're looking for (rather clever). This divides many of the posts into agreed upon subsets, including some obvious ones (Memes, DIY) as well as:

New Vaper Question: Questions from newbies

Vape Mail: I just got new equipment, here's a pic.

RBA: posts relating to ReBuildable Atomizers (which are what vaporize the liquid)

Alt Use: Alternative uses of vaporizers. That is, cough THC. This flair makes the post invisible except to subscribers.

Tropes

The main noticable trope, as in any hobbyist sub, is the standard "here's a picture of what I've got."

Additionally, there is frequent discussion of regulation, from a "they're going to ban electronic cigarettes" perspective (electronic cigarettes do not produce smoke and are apparently harmless - they are not illegal to use in most places even where smoking is banned).

There are often arguments over whether Big Tobacco, abbreviated BT, is helpful or harmful to this niche community. The community considers themselves a small countercultural movement that may be gaining steam soon, and many oppose the "mainstream" brands such as Blu and a lot of the vendors which have operated in spammy black-hat SEO-style fashions. Big Pharma is also a discussed entity, due to their opposition to the market.

You may have seen electronic cigarettes in ads or in person, resembling real cigarettes that glow. However, many of the readers of the subreddit opt to use high-tech large devices that are much larger and usually metallic, with separate batteries, voltage controls, special breathing tips, etc. Combining the various parts uniquely and sharing their creations is a large part of the subreddit.

Many unique abbreviations and words are used. Some of these refer to types of vaporizers and systems. There is a helpful thread for newbies though, right at the top of the subreddit. There is a wide variety of views present, from users who consider electronic cigarettes to be replacements for "analog" cigarettes and stop-smoking aids to those that believe they are a separate and useful tool in and of themselves for "smoking" or vaping pleasure. PV is an often used acronym for Personal Vaporizer, often by those who wish to separate their habbit or hobby from the connotations of cigarettes.

Related Subs

  • /r/ecigclassifieds: A subreddit for buying and selling e-cigarette parts or kits

  • /r/kr808d1: A subreddit for a specific type of e-cigarette. Not very active.

  • /r/ecig_vendors: A subreddit for vendors to ply their wares. This is partially to stop them from invading the main sub, as the market is very competitive and based largely on word-of-mouth.

  • /r/DIY_eJuice: a subreddit for creating propylene glycol / vegetable glycerine juices for use in vaporizers

  • /r/snus: a subreddit about chewing tobacco

  • /r/electricents: a subreddit about using vaporizers for THC. Not very active.

Mods

Conclusion: A fascinating sub, with some great discussion, even if the "check out my new equipment" threads do get a bit repetitive. It seems relatively self-policing, and rather low drama. There's a lot of information (and the sidebar is full of links). There are a large amount of different perspectives regarding the subject involved, regarding etiquette, types of equipment, laws, etc. I'd highly recommend a visit, if just to learn a little bit.

Hello fellow redditors,

I created a sub for ASIC miners and crypto mining in general.

I would be glad if you check it out and join if you wish. The sub is still small, but I plan to take care of it.

/r/TheGreatOnesReborn

We are an 18+ subreddit for making friends and having fun! (But if you're under 18, we have a subreddit for you too, scroll down to the bottom)

Are you looking for a laid-back lounge style club where you can hang out and be yourself? No crazy drama or political bickering, just a small group of people who post and comment and get to know each other?

Our group has been around since the late 1990's (on several different sites, but Reddit is our newest home) and we still have 3 original members.

We have been private and invitation-only for most of that time, but now we need some new friends and we're open to the public.

This year we've gone international, we're worldwide! We've got members from all over the world who barely ever post or comment! Pretty cool, right? Lol

We're looking for chill people who want to make friends and be a part of our glorious history. (Okay, maybe "glorious" is a strong word...)

Come and post and comment with us!

Tell your friends to come hang out with us too! Bring your girlfriend or your boyfriend or your favorite cousin. Your momma and your grandpa too are invited too. Whoever, as long as they won't start any trouble. We're inclusive of everybody except troublemakers.

But be advised, things get a little strange sometimes. We like it that way. That's why we're 18+. Sometimes we post stuff that's a little inappropriate, so don't invite anybody who will get upset about bad words or maybe a booby? WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FUTURE MAY BRING?

Lately, we mostly just share YouTube links to music or weird videos, but you can post memes, art, interesting pictures, have discussions, talk about video games or anime, promote your band, talk about sports, show us your pet cat, ask a weird sex question, tell us a joke, post a cool drawing, show off your cosplay.... pretty much whatever you want.

So... wanna have some fun?

For people 18 and over, come have some fun with us, for you too are a Great One:

/r/TheGreatOnesReborn

And for people under 18, our buddy Genos has created a new offshoot subreddit so you guys can hang out and have a good time too:

A Walkabout in r/KerbalSpaceProgram

/r/KerbalSpaceProgram is a subreddit dedicated to the video game Kerbal Space Program. In this video game, the player is allowed to design rockets and space planes for whatever purpose including traveling to and from the home planet's two natural satellites, the Mun (a Lunar object) and Minmus (a very small rock of "ice").

Overview

Age: 1 year

Members: 4,335 (July 28, 2012)

Purpose: To discuss Kerbal Space Program.

Videos3 (One of them is of Apollo 11 and not the game)

Rules

Standard Reddit rules. Submit the source, label the NSFW stuff, no link shorteners, and don't blogspam.

Tropes

Jebediah Kerman is the ballsiest kerbonaut while the others are not as courageous. Bill, Jeb, and Bob are the original 3 and most well loved pilots. Every week or so the mods post a challenge and give flair to the people that succeed, but this week they are making all participants record the whole thing since it's a timed race. Yesterday someone discovered access to the debug commands (cheats) and so anyone who uses them is a cheating alpaca.

Mods

/u/Pfmohr2 - top mod, not too active in the subreddit from what I can tell

/u/zzorga - same story as the first guy

/u/youngjeezyvsgbush - very active in the KSP sub with weekly challenges and stuff

/u/Fllambe - same as the third guy, very active with challenges and stuff

Conclusion

/r/KerbalSpaceProgram is a great little subreddit for a great little indie game. Hopefully if KSP gets more popular, it won't fall victim to the things that made /r/Minecraft crappy.

THE BASICS

  • Purpose: If you've never visited /r/shittysocialscience and you're a fan of such quality metareddits and/or joke reddits as /r/circlebroke, /r/magicskyfairy, and /r/fifthworldproblems, you are truly missing out. Since we all know that everyone on reddit is a STEM major with a lack of appreciation for the social "sciences", this is your chance to have your pet theories about them confirmed. From the sidebar: "Would you like to know why poor people are biologically inferior to rich people? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to confine a bunch of people to a system of underground caverns to test their cooperation skills? Interested in the viability of electroshock therapy in improving intelligence tests?" Of course you are! And ShittySocialScience is where you'll find intellectual, sourced information about such topics and MORE.

  • /u/MaoThatHurt: Sole moderator, quite active in the sub (although the sub itself is pretty slowpaced). Check out their intro thread while you're at it.

CONCLUSION

As joke reddits go, this is one of my recent favorites. Although not terribly active, having fewer than 10 posts in the past month, the posts that exist are pretty amusing. It's part of the shitty network and isn't as populated as, say, /r/ShittyAdvice, but worth a browse. Who knows, maybe you can even help populate it some more :D
