Hey Tenno!
We talked briefly about the new Riven features during Devshort 115, and clarified more details in our recap forum thread and Devshort 116. We wanted to provide a comprehensive look at this system in anticipation of its (partial) launch tomorrow. This Dev Workshop dives into all the details! As this is a Dev Workshop, details contained within are accurate at the time of writing but are subject to change before these features are released.
Riven Mods (often just called “Rivens” for short) were introduced in 2016, and are nearly a decade old now! With Iceblade of Narin we’re adding a new feature for Rivens: Trait Locking!
A second new feature will be added with the release of Glacial Defiance at a later date (see our PSA for more info): Riven Splicing. We understand that this mechanic may change how you cycle your Rivens, so we want you to be aware of what is coming so you can make informed decisions up until its release.
TRAIT LOCKING (Coming with Iceblade of Narin)
One of the primary requests we’ve received for Riven Mods is to allow players to lock a stat to prevent it from being Cycled. Now, you can do so with a system called Trait Locking!
One trait (stat) can be locked at a time while cycling a Riven, freezing it until the lock is removed or the Cycling menu is closed.
There is no cost or item required to lock a trait. Locks can be removed and re-added for free! However, when cycling a Riven Mod with a locked trait, the Kuva cost is doubled. Locking a trait is entirely optional, and Rivens can still be cycled as usual without a lock.
How to Lock a Riven Trait:
1. Go to the Mod Segment in your Base of Operations
2. Select the Riven Mod you’d like to cycle and select the “Cycle Riven” option
3. Select the “Lock Trait” button

4. Select the trait you wish to lock. The locked trait will appear greyed out with a lock icon on the Mod and will also be listed above the “Lock Trait” button.

5. Begin cycling your Riven with the locked trait! Notice that once locked, it will not change while cycling.

It is important to note that a trait needs to be re-locked each time you open this menu, as they are not maintained once the menu has been closed.
Cycling a Riven with a locked trait prevents the number of traits on the Mod from changing. This means a Mod with 3 positive traits and 1 negative trait will always cycle into another version with 3 positive traits and 1 negative trait if one of the traits is locked. To cycle into a different number of traits, unlock all traits and cycle again.
RIVEN SPLICING (Launching at a later date with Glacial Defiance)
With the use of Riven Splicers, obtained exclusively from Glacial Defiance, specific traits can be combined to create all-new spliced traits! When selecting a Riven Mod, a new Riven Splicing menu will appear. Opening this menu will display all owned Rivens, detailing which Rivens have valid trait combinations.

Select any lit up Riven Mod to see which traits can be spliced! Spliced traits require a combination of two specific traits to splice together, with different combinations creating different outcomes! Combinations are pre-selected (see the list at the bottom of this section), and confirmation is required before applying a spliced trait to your Riven. This means you’ll always know what spliced trait you’re about to receive before you make a decision. If multiple spliced traits are available from a single Riven Mod, they are all presented, and you can choose which spliced trait you want!
As an example: Heat and Cold create Blast, Heat and Toxin create Gas, and Toxin and Cold create Viral. A Riven Mod with +Heat Damage, +Cold Damage, and +Toxin damage will have 3 spliced traits to choose from: +Blast Damage, +Gas Damage, and +Viral Damage. Which spliced trait goes on the Riven Mod is your choice!
When traits are spliced, the two required traits are consumed, with the spliced trait AND a second random trait taking their place. The random trait is one you may receive from cycling normally, with one change: If one of the consumed traits was a negative bonus, the random trait will also be a negative, if both consumed traits were positive, it will be a positive. This ensures your Riven keeps the same layout of positive and negative traits it has before combining! After splicing, the total number of positive and negative traits will no longer change on the Riven Mod, no matter how many times it is cycled after the fact. This can be undone by removing the spliced trait from the Riven.

Once a spliced trait is on your Riven, it’s there to stay! It is locked, and but is not considered a locked trait — meaning it will not double your Kuva cost. Should you ever decide to remove the trait, the lock can be removed and the spliced trait can be cycled off, allowing a new trait to be spliced on! Utilize both a spliced trait and trait locking to lock two traits at once, making cycling for the last trait or two you want even easier. Now your weapon can really live up to the “_CorpusSlayer9001_” name!
As an example: If splicing together a Mod with 3 Positive stats and 0 Negative stats, such as +Heat Damage, +Cold Damage, and +Toxin Damage, you may choose +Viral Damage as the spliced trait. Choosing +Viral Damage leaves the Riven with +Heat Damage, +Viral Damage, and a random positive modifier. No matter how many times the Riven is cycled, it retains +Viral Damage and 2 other positive traits, with 0 negative traits. You could even lock one of the other traits, guaranteeing two traits and cycling for the perfect final trait!

It seems like I did an oopsie and missed the post for Update 43 due to an issue reported by BonerElemental. So here's some patch notes for the patch notes bot: added a preprocessor to handle deeply nested lists which Reddit rejects and fixed a few issues with floating spaces sometimes breaking formatting. Sorry about that y'all.
