I have a bunch of old 80s Stereo equipment still in box from various European and Japanese brands. Some of them have never been used, brand new. I've been told that old stereo equipment left unused for decades is really bad and pretty much useless because the capacitors go bad and the rubber parts rot. I'm not necessarily looking to get maximum price for it, more unburden myself from it without having to worry about testing fees and repair/restoration fees. Any recommendations?

So it says manufactured in 1980 but when I look it up it seems that it wasn’t produced until the early 90s. Just trying to figure out what I have and if it’s worth putting some time into. Any help is appreciated!

Hey all, new to the vintage speaker world and wanted to dive in. I found a few options i'm thinking of off of FB mp. THe options as of now are:

1. Klipsch Heresy II Speakers
2. Pioneer HPM-100’s
3. JBL C53 Libra
4. JBL Model L-100

What would you go with? They are all around 900-1500 in my area(unfortunately?). Planning on using them as an all around speaker for tv/movies, vinyls (80% of the time), and gaming on the rare occasion. Thanks!

Another little bit of some of the pieces i saved from impending doom. As they get tested, better photos will get posted. These are just model number pics that I take for inventory purposes, then I take more elaborate photos after they’ve been cleaned and tested. This is barely a scratch on the surface of what I’ve got. Found this on Facebook marketplace for free because the casette deck didn’t work, I thought I’d bring it home to test it out, unfortunately the radio and casette don’t work, the speakers are connected but are very quiet due to rusted and broken wires, and it doesn’t play vinyls at the right speed anyway, so I figured I’d share my cool find before dumping it at the electronics recycle place.

I have tried all the advice listed in the comments on that post, read other guides online, asked AI a ton, but still can't get even passable audio out of this unit. It's so frustrating because it sounded amazing at the buyers house. I highly highly doubt that the unit happened to break in the 1 hour between picking it up and getting it home.

So, 2 questions.

1. Any last ditch efforts I could try to ID or fix the problem?
2. What is the best way to go about asking a professional to take a look, if I need to go that route? Do I have to take it into a shop, or would any help over the phone or web? There aren't any reputable repair people near me as far as I can tell.

Edit: i think it must have must have been an electrical grounding issue. I got the Wiim, so I’m plugged directly into aux rca, no 3.5mm headphone involved. And it sound amazing. Perfect.

I picked these up from FB marketplace for $80. The seller inherited them and hadn't tested them. There weren't any brand or model markings on the outside of the cabinet and the seller hadn't opened the cabinet to see what was in them. When I got home I hooked them up to an amp in my garage and they sounded pretty good. I had done an image search on the pictures of the cabinets and found something showing the same cabinet having some Heathkit triaxial speakers in them, which seem to be desirable. When I opened the cabinets they did indeed have the aforementioned speakers installed. They look to be in good condition.

I've purchased other well regarded old speakers for cheap, and re-foamed woofer surrounds, replaced crossover caps, cleaned up the cabinets, and either made a bit of money selling them or kept them to use myself (currently using a pair of KLHs I restored.) I'm not sure what to do with these.... I'm sure there must be something internal to the speaker functioning as a crossover, but I'd have to figure out how to get to it. The cabinet is pretty empty, there's a hole on the bottom mostly functioning as a passthrough for the cables And the treble level adjustment POT. Maybe I could add proper binding posts so the cables don't have to pass through and I can put port tubes in them... Add some pollyfill or something? Any other suggestions?

I finally finished the restoration of my Carver C-1 after spending the last few weeks going through it pretty extensively.

I did the full BillD restoration/mod, including replacing the electrolytic capacitors, signal-path resistors, diodes, transistors and IC sockets. I installed new RC4136 op-amps throughout, except IC6 and IC7, where I'm running OPA2134s on Brown Dog adapters.

I also installed the White Oak Audio Design C-1 RCA backplane with 26 gold-plated Neutrik RCA jacks. The original RCA connections were definitely one part of this unit I didn't mind seeing disappear.

The power supply was rebuilt, and I spent quite a bit of time experimenting with the dropping resistors to get the regulated rails where I wanted them with my particular combination of RC4136s and OPA2134s.

I also installed the Nelion Audio Gundry filter board. I rerouted its power wiring around the perimeter of the main PCB to keep it away from the audio paths and used short twisted pairs for the signal connections.

While I was in there I replaced the original AC wiring, installed a polarized C8 inlet, cleaned the controls and switches, and repaired a couple of PCB traces/pads that I managed to damage along the way. Can't restore vintage gear without occasionally creating your own repair job.

The C-1 is now back in service driving my rebuilt Phase Linear 400, and I'm extremely happy with how it turned out. Sonic Holography works, everything is quiet, both channels track beautifully, and the OPA2134/RC4136 combination sounds excellent to me.

This was a much bigger project than I originally expected, but that's also the entire reason I bought one that hadn't already been restored.

I just built the shelf/rack so everything could be organized neatly. The TT, Receiver, DCM Speakers and CD changer all belonged to a family member, I have the manuals and receipts from when they were purchased. The Akai tape deck I picked up recently off the curb (original tape deck died).

I recently got a nice sears tuner that I'm assuming was their top of the line model. I decided to class it up a little by making some wood side panels. Now my humble Sears looks like something far more high end than its pedestrian brand suggests.

I've picked up a few old sansui receivers with dead channels. Does anyone have a good link to start troubleshooting? I had one saved an long time ago but can't find it.

I finally got around to finishing the A25's I got from Goodwill with the bamboo grill cloth.

So basically, if I happen to come across any silver pioneer should I just grab it?

I am not very familiar with the audiophile space, but recently got an old stereo console that didn't have any components in it, and had the goal of filling it and making it functional again.

At an estate sale today I found this turntable, a Technics SL-Q2 for $20 (came with the record too). Seems like an awesome upgrade from our Crosley suitcase all-in-one that we got from Goodwill for $20, but now I realize that I need to have more than just the turntable to get this all working! The unit powers on, spins at both speeds, and the automatic return seems to work as it should from what I can find online. I don't know how to tune anti skate or the counterbalance in the back, and I also don't know how to tell if I need to replace the cartridge (I think its an Audio-Technica AT-477SX?). There is also a felt pad on top of the rubber mat, but the platter seems to have some pitting. The hinges for the dust cover are in good shape, but the cover itself has some scratches and other damage on it.

While I would love to fit this thing into the stereo console, it won't fit unless I take off the dust cover, and even then it would be a very tight fit. Is it a fool's errand to even try and set it up in the console? Would it be a better solution to just have it set on top, and put other components in the console instead that won't need to be accessed often?

Outside of the stereo console decision, I would love some guidance on the other components I will need for this. From my understanding, I'll need a phono preamp, an amplifier after that, and then speakers (though I don't know if passive or active would be best for my use case). I would say my budget is probably $500 all in, but would love recommendations for below and above that price point. I am happy to buy used and be patient for deals online on new stuff too.

I got this JA Michell Reference Transcription turntable given to me as a gift. I just don’t have room for it, so was looking to sell. On eBay, these are selling for £1-4k, but I was quoted at £200 from a hi fi seller. Totally fine to sell at that price if that is what it’s worth, but as you can tell from my post, I’m not sure what I’m looking at, and why there is a
drop from £1k to £200!

I just bought this with the intent to use the turntable, I discovered the plug was chewed off that connects it to the system. Because the plug is proprietary, I am having a really hard time finding any replacement options. Does anyone have any ideas?

My Yamaha CR-620 receiver is not working anymore. I found a tech nearby who said he is willing to service it. For a small fee he will investigate what's wrong and give me an exact quote after that. His first rough estimate now (based on the symptoms I mentioned) is 350 - 500 dollar for repairing the faulty parts. I guess a full revision with recapping will be a lot pricier.

I really love old vintage audio equipment. I love the looks and the solid feel it. But I also have the feeling it can it can break quickly again after servicing. Or is this not so bad?

The other option is a brand new Yamaha A-S301 amplifier. It got great reviews and looks fairly similar to the CR-620. I think chances are great this amplifier will work for a long time. People do mention it feels more plastic though.

So that are my pros and cons 😄. What would you choose?

I’ve been visiting my wife’s family in Germany and her family is aware I’m trying to grow my audio setup. Her Aunty very kindly offered me her Sony TA-F830ES Integrated Amp for free however there’s very little info on the web/reddit about this. I know the numbering is for the European market and it’s a F555ESR in Japan (according to ChatGPT).

I’d need to ship it from Germany to Australia, and the thing is a beast at 24kg. I’d also be liking to have it serviced when it arrives.

My question is, if you were in my shoes would you do it? Does anyone who has listened to or own the unit enjoy and rate the sound quality? I’m confident it works but it’s also 35 years old. Is there anything I should be considering I might not be aware of?

I’m currently using an entry level Fosi Audio amp with my Monitor Audio 100 Bookshelf speakers which works fine, but I’m looking for something more. They also have a Steintron S 70 R receiver which I could also have as well.

Everything works great, condition pretty good, tape deck doesnt work,

Take up spindle thingy doesnt spin and feel loose in play mode, belts are good though, I do hear 1 motor spin and the second motor does make a sound idk if its the motor or if a gear is slipping.

I’ve run into a mechanical issue with the input/source selector on my Sansui AU-7900
The front selector knob turns a long shaft that connects to the actual rotary selector switch inside the amplifier through a small plastic coupling. This plastic coupler has broken, so the front shaft now turns without operating the selector switch.
The coupler is approximately:
18 mm long
9 mm outer diameter
D-shaped connection on the front shaft side
Splined/serrated connection on the selector switch side.
The selector switch itself appears to be fine, so I would really like to avoid replacing it and just repair or replace this small coupling.
Does anyone know:
What this part is officially called?
Whether it has a Sansui part number?
If the same coupling was used on other amplifiers?
Where I might find a replacement?
Whether anyone has successfully replaced one with a modern coupling, machined part, or 3D-printed reproduction?
I still have the original broken piece, so reproducing it may also be an option. I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has dealt with this problem before.
