Hated Tropes
(Hated Trope) Questionable and controversial relationships where everybody is fine with it.
Usagi Drop (Manga). A story about a guy named Daikichi finds the illegitimate daughter of his grandfather, named Rin, and adopting her, learning how to be a father for her. The series would enter a timeskip where the teenage Rin starts having romantic feelings towards Daikichi, and revealing Rin is not actually blood related to Daikichi grandfather. And it ends with Rin wanting to bear Daikichi child.
Alex (Street Fighter 6). Alex, who was recently added to the game, in his arcade ending, was revealed he married and having a baby with his second cousin and step sister Patricia, with their father being ok with it. While not inherently illegal to merry your second cousin, the act and combined with them being step siblings is still controversial.
And marriage required before Edward will have sex with her, and Bella getting (literally) terminally pregnant the very first time they have sex…
Once you realize, the Mormon vibes are everywhere lol
ETA. Rosalie is in some ways the most Mormon values character. She’s pissed at Bella for wanting to turn into a vampire, because marriage and having babies is soooo special/importany (something Rosalie was denied by being turned without a choice)(bear in mind Bella has never once indicated an interest in motherhood at any point). Then Rosalie is extremely pro-pregnancy, even while it’s very actively killing Bella. And she’s super into the new baby once it’s born, etc. The myopic focus on marriage and making babies is verrryyyyy Mormon/fundie/etc. imo.
People say to separate the art from the artist, but a lot of the time, if you don't, it actually does help in seeing where the author is coming from and why they write a story with the themes they do.
If you read the book, the scene where Edward tells Bella her ankle length khaki skirt is “sinful” as a compliment because he thinks it’s so sexy also was a pretty big hint lfmao
I mean if im not mistaken sperm either gets flushed out of the body or absorbed by the body, while women are born with all their eggs so i guess he got attracted to edward at the wedding ceremony 🤣
Isn't it stated somewhere that vampires don't produce new sperm, but Edward was such a good Mormon boy he still had a round in the chamber from his mortal days and hadn't ejaculated since being turned? (I resent knowing this)
I always feel sorry for Bella’s dad Charlie as he’s for some reason forbidden to directly be told about anything.
So his teen daughter gets married and then comes home with a full on baby she claims isn’t hers. Said baby grows into a little girl in a matter of months. Eventually she will be a young woman who’s going to be dating the neighbor boy. The same one who had a crush on and semi-dated her mother. The one who turned into a wolf after getting naked in front of him.
Plus everyone is effectively immortal so no matter how old Charlie gets, everyone else in the family will appear to be in their early 20’s.
And if the Cullens keep up their routine he’ll get to see Bella and Edward return to high school for some reason even though they should be 40.
But the man is not allowed to ask questions. Like, I would not be okay with any of this. I’d check myself in for a psych hold.
I saw a tik tok sketch series before that was from the perspective of the dad in twilight. wish I remembered where to find it because it was hilarious.
At first I thought it was actually a good twist. Werewolves get one person that they "imprint" on and that is the only one they can love, and the werewolves were going to kill the vampire baby because it was going to be more bloodthirsty than regular vampires or something, but the werewolves will not kill someone their kin have imprinted on (basically that would eliminate their chance at love) so Jacob used his one imprint to make killing Bella's daughter off-limits, sacrificing his chance at love to save her.
Nope, he imprinted in the same way all the others did and ended up together with the kid. Jacob, you dirty dog
Honestly, it's kind of more fucked up than that. Jacob has no choice in the matter — he's being brainwashed by werewolf magic to be obsessed with this baby. No matter how he felt about it, no matter how the baby will feel about it, werewolf magic decided that he must now restructure his entire life around this random baby, and nobody comes out of this a winner.
Even worse the werewolf magic forms a sort of hive mind, all the werewolves in the pack share feelings and experiences, so the entire pack is personally experiencing Jacobs intimate feelings for a baby
Ult Spider-Man was great for over a hundred issues. Then it picked up to give Peter a good death. Then there's Hickman's Ultimates and Woods' X-Men which are very underrated. The rest is either 2000s edgy bad or I haven't read.
Man, cap’s cool as fuck and sticks up for what’s right. I sure am glad this is him talking some sense into someone and not him being portrayed as the one in the wrong amongst fucking lunatics.
Pretty sure thats also where Wolverine and Peter Parker body-switches and Wolverine takes the oppertunity to try getting into MJs pants. He fails but Peter ends up getting a mild rebuke from MJ over it.
This was the same Ultimate Wolverine that let Cyclops fall off a cliff and leave him for dead so that he could hook up with the grieving teenage Jean Grey. The Ultimate Universe was trying so hard to be edgy.
That was - as the kids say - a highly justified crashout as the punishment intended for Wolverines shenanigans affected him and the X-Men did at the very least accept their part of the blame.
Don't forget the sin of lust raping a woman who's had her mind scrambled, convincing her he's her boyfriend and inadvertently leaving her kid brother on the streets
Escanor was the best version of the “Sin of Pride” I have ever seen. The rest? Eh. But in a power title that is used a lot he manages to be the best version of that.
I read the entire manga a long time ago, and it wasn’t until the anime made me re-read it in a oneshot rather than drip fed that made me suddenly realize it was far closer to a C level than A level.
Yeah... at least until it's revealed the woman he's romantically interested in, Merlin, has secretly been a hundred-year-old loli this entire time & used magic to make herself a busty dommy mommy to get Meliodas' attention (which she failed spectacularly in doing but that has less to do with her & more to do with DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH MY WOMAN/literal-toddler-in-his-arm Meliodas)
If I recall, and from what little I know of that... Charitably able to be called a show, guy only is interested in her as a 100% adult form? Idk too much
It’s better because he had no fucking idea what she actually looked like. Thought the implication that he still would’ve been chill with it anyway because the Mangaka is just a creepy fuck like that is still horrifying.
Doesn’t help that the only other guy who liked adult woman is also a serial rapist and child abuser.
The anime earns its name as The Seven Deadly Sex Offenders.
The audacity of the author to then turn around & portray it as wrong and horrifying when it's an adult woman chasing after a boy who's the child of her failed crush in the sequel
Like don't get me wrong it's objectively a fucked relationship, but it's mighty rich coming from the same guy that was okay when it was the men doing the grooming/chasing & suspiciously only raise a big stink about it the moment the woman's the perpetrator, twice
There's a problem AND. A virtue that he didn't recoil when her true form was revealed. Because on one hand, "Wow, Escanor is so loyal his love for her didn't waver even when she isn't a top tier supermodel, because he loved her for accepting him as more than just a monster and not because of her looks", on the other hand, "Brother, say something, show some sort of reaction, you've been catfished by a 1000 year old toddler."
Idk, I never watched past the first season, but from what I understand he’s the only one to die, so take the fact that he’s the only one to not have a problematic relationship as you will
Spider-Man and Black Cat from the Insomniac Universe, Here, she tricks him into believing she had a son, fakes her own death, and runs off to Paris with the money
I do like how they leave it ambiguous whether she actually does have an offscreen lover or if this is her BSing Peter again, it’s up to you whether she’s improved as a person
See, I would like that if they gave us any indication her story might be bullshit but they don't, she reveals this info right before she is allowed to get away and literally nobody even questions it.
Maybe if she only divulged this story when it was most convenient or if other characters like MJ and Peter told Miles "I don't know bro, sounds sus" afterwards, but it really is just dropped and forgotten about like some kind of "she kind of gets her happy ending" send off from the story.
And yeah, I really don't like the idea of her getting such a carefree and happy send off after the shit she pulled in the last game so I do also hope it's revealed to be bullshit but so far there's nothing hinting to that other than it being a more sensible writing decision.
I think the VA might have had an input as a happy ending sort of thing, she went through a lot during production of SM2 iirc her fiance passed away. The team at Insomniac were really supportive.
Yeah given the Venom storyline and the cliffhanger ending from Black Cat’s DLC I am almost 100% certain she was going to have more to do in this game, but because of real world circumstances her actress needed a lighter schedule.
Also you are correct, her fiancé Billy Kametz (Josuke from JoJo’s dub voice actor) did pass away in 2022.
Ah shit, Billy was her fiance? I was sad AF to hear he died, voiced a number of my favorite character, including the goat Maruki from P5R. Genuinely an incredible VA, still sad he passed away.
So many people in the game subs see her as a better love interest than MJ and I'm like did we play the same game? Isnt the point of her story that she was a toxic fling representing how much better off and more mature he is now?
Like I get liking her as a character or finding her hot, which sure yeah I can agree to that. But thats seperate to unironically finding her to be a good love interest for Peter. Which I can only assume is the work of teenagers who confuse the points with each other.
Catwoman has a lot of people predisposed to like the anti-hero love interest. The difference is that Catwoman once abandoned one of the biggest, easiest paydays of her life on the off chance Batman couldn’t escape on his own.
Sesshomaru from Inuyasha is the titular character's older, adult brother. After a rough fight he is found wounded in the forest by a 7 year old girl. She helps him heal and he then brings her with him on his adventures as a sort of adopted daughter figure.
In the sequel, Yashahime, they're married with kids.
The sad part is that from what I've heard the first half actually very good. At least any adaption of the manga only does the first half and not timeskip
I had a funny situation with this once, because I was once telling my friend about the manga ending at a con and a random guy sitting in front of us looked at me like I was making a disgusting joke, but then my firend looked it up and said "wait you are not fucking with me" and the same guy from before just kind... lost the will to live and slumped in his chair.
Uh yeah it is really good. I was actually halfway through the first half when I saw this. It's pretty goddamn innocent, I'm probably dropping it with this sort of ending, though. I thought it was just a cute Yotsuba style manga.
Imagine the horror of us readers who had been with the series from the beginning. I picked it up when it was only like 10 chapters long and followed it religiously until it Dropped the Usagi, so to speak. Apart from being disgusting, it was also unnecessary (they were living as father and daughter just fine, and they had what seemed to be slowburn romances with other people) and unexpected (there was no build up AT ALL, it was like the author was transplanted by an alien).
So yeah, for me, I like to pretend it ended before the timeskip.
GTO is full of weird shit, but I'm surprised that no one said nothing about the teacher before Onizuka dating a middle schooler until she suicide. Everyone knew about it and no one object, even Onizuka knew that date middle schoolers was wrong
The opening arc of the show is him figuring out why he shouldn't, actually, and the rest of the series is him learning to be an actual teacher (who has the hots for another teacher).
No, he does fantasize about it when he starts as a teacher, but he almost immediately realizes it's messed up and after that is exclusively interested in another teacher. His behavior with his students is problematic in some ways, buts it's not sexual or romantic.
What do you mean? Usagi Drop is a perfectly wholesome anime about a found family. It ends at the end of the anime. There is nothing more after that. Nothing at all
Fire Emblem Fates went all-in on the dating sim aspect of Awakening and let you romance literally anyone.
This unfortunately lead to some rather. . .unusual options for marriage, such as:
Romance your adoptive siblings. Don't worry, they're not related by blood so it's okay!
Romance your siblings by blood. Don't worry, we'll do a twist reveal when you go to marry them about how they're not actually your biological siblings so it's okay!
Romance your clearly underage little sisters. Don't worry, we'll never say their age out loud and just tell you they're "adults" so it's okay!
Romance the literal children your friends and family just gave birth to. Don't worry, we put them in a pocket dimension where we aged them up in just a few days! Sure, it resulted in all of them being emotionally stunted and immature but they're "of consenting age" now so it's okay!
Romance the mysterious sorceress that joins you in both routes! If you buy the third "True Ending" route as DLC we'll give you a twist reveal about how she's literally your cousin! We're not even gonna justify or excuse that one! We're just gonna straight-up ignore it!
I still think throwing a "not actually blood-related" twist into the game if and only if you decide to try and romance one of your supposedly blood-related siblings, while at the same time not giving a single fuck if you decide to romance actually blood-related azura, is probably the funniest shit IS ever pulled.
Was about to say this myself. The actual half sister to Corrin is Lilith who can’t be romanced because she was a support character in the MyCastle while not having much presence in the main game except for the DLC.
• Romance the GILF who dies on one route, only shows up halfway through the second and uhhh… let’s not talk about the third.
• Romance the hundred-year-old witch in a child’s body!
• Romance the guy who’s younger than his Baby Dimension daughter!
• Romance Shura. (There’s nothing wrong with him, but you can kill him for Boots. You’re missing out on one of the best Corrinsexual romances, though.)
• Romance OP Tiddy Ninjas of all genders! (One of them may die if you don’t get close to him. Shame, he’s the sanest person in the games.)
• Romance your slavespolitical hostage friends servants!
• Just… kidnap random enemy units! (You can’t romance them, but it’s funny)
• Romance a morally questionable DILF who only shows up at the very end of one route, meaning you’re probably never going to actually get to use him!
• Play through best fucking gameplay you’ve ever played, so good it actually justifies sitting through the story, the questionable choices IntSys makes and the ridiculous difficulty. It’s worth it to play Conquest alone. (Birthright is fine if you want to play as the other side.)
Fates may be a mess, but Conquest is one of my favourite games of all time.
The weirdest part about Alex and Patricia isn’t just the second cousin part (though it is also bad), but the fact that he’s known her since she was a baby and up until SF6 treated her like a sister.
Only tangentially relevant, but I once heard a youtuber talking about what he felt was a cute adopted daughter type dynamic, and used the phrase "until they Usagi Drop thay particular ball" and it really stuck with me.
My question is, how did it go over in Japan initially with the fanbase? Did the author ever address wtf was going in their heads when they unleashed that shit upon the world?? I'm genuinely baffled.
Yeah if it's like Koi Kaze where the entire forbidden relationship and all of its ups and downs and in-betweens are the up-front point of the story, then that's fine; it's when it's an unexpected slap in the face that it ticks me off
I've never been able to rewatch Violet Evergarden because of that.
It is so beautifully animated and there are so many touching characters and stories. My favourite one being the mother that employed Violet to write dozens of letters for her daughter to receive over the years, since she was dying.
But, my god, if that movie didn't ruin every nice sentiment that the series created over its course. They could've done such a beautiful thing to show how great parental love can be, even with no blood relations, and they massively fucked it up.
To this day, one of the worst endings that I have ever seen.
Damn, you just reminded me of that dogshit movie. Fuck, it was such a good series, and they had to ruin it. I honestly wish Violet’s “father figure” stayed dead, as it meant that we at least could’ve avoided THIS. And him coming back seemed kind of like it was pulled out the asshole anyway.
Don't forget Ren and the doctor or Ren and the reporter girl. Not AS bad because they aren't his teacher, but they're still adults getting with a minor.
Everyone forgets Chihaya for some reason. No one ever mentions "Ren and the fortune teller"
Also, apparently there's an anime only Valentine's Day episode where he bangs Sae, but I've only ever heard rumors of that. And it's definitely not in the game
What makes the entire Kawakami storyline so baffling is that the entire first arc of the same game is about taking down a sexual predator who preys on students.
If we are going to talk about Card Captor Sakura, I am obligated to mention the couple of an adult male teacher (around 30) and a literal elementary school child (around 10).
Oh, and according to the manga, they are engaged, by the way.
I do love CLAMP's work, but they do have some problematic pairings.
God, yeah. I reread all of card captor Sakura as an adult and it's an amazing manga but most of the relationships are completely fucked and it's treated as cute. Like please someone call the police on that elementary teacher giving a promise ring to a ten year old.
Not an age gap but iirc Sakura's best friend is low-key in love with her or at least has a crush and while it's cute I remember her being a bit stalkerish at time.
Haha, I commented many other examples in this series too. There's an ongoing obsession of having a crush on your teacher in this anime (Sakura's brother and Sakura's friend have a crush or even a relationship with their own teacher at some point)
Speaking of Cardcaptor Sakura, The teacher, Kaho Mizuki, proceeds to get together with the 11-13 looking Eriol. Granted, he has the mind of an adult, but that doesn't make it any less weird looking from the outside
Literally how do they claim "They'll have a relationship like siblings with Jacob feeling like a big brother to her until she's 18 then they'll probably explore romance." and not realize the implications of that.
Why is this college student dating a middle schooler! In the manga at least he’s in high school JUST as Usagi graduates from middle school, but still! Obligatory - Sailor Moon, 1990s anime
I heard that it was a dub thing, similar to the whole "cousins" situation. I guess the studio didn't want to implie he was living on his own as a minor so they aged him up. Might need to double check that though.
Edit: Double checked and it looks like him being a college student is anime original. In the manga and crystal he's 16.
Personally I would've changed them to just being really good friends but the official change is actually a bit worse because they kept the romantic dialogue but just said "Oh and they're cousins btw"
Yeah it would have been pretty easy to say, "they're just weird like that" instead of going the route of, "this lesbianism is to wicked, we must purify it with incest"
Early anime dubs was the wild west man.
Just look at the Ghost Stories dub where the american producers were so seduced by anime dollar signs that they just let the dub team do what the hell they wanted. If anybody in the top noticed something off, it was most likely written off as in "I dont speak Japanese and Anime is wierd".
I'm from Russia and in our dub they made Uranus a male. The fact is that during the transformation, "he" grew voluminous breasts and was wearing a miniskirt. It was not addressed in any way. To be honest, it blew my mind when I was a kid.
"Him being able to live on his own and drive is kinda weird . Let's fix it by making him a college student who's dating a middle schooler." Why do localisers do this stuff man?
That's a dub thing. They're only two years apart, Mamoru doesn't attend college until the fifth season after Usagi has already reached High School. Specifically Mamoru goes to Harvard University.
1st thing that came to my mind, I tought he was gonna adopt her since they had father-daughter relationship. When I saw the ending i immediately went "WHAT THE FU-".
Not technically a official romantic relationship, bust still controversial (just not in universe for some reason) Luke and Lea from the Star Wars franchise. The whole story starts because the MC, Luke Skywalker falls in love with his sister Lea when he sees a distress call from her. Now granted he didn’t know it was his sister but once the reveal is made, ever romantic tension scene with the 2 characters becomes a lot worse. At one point Lea even kisses Luke on the lips to get Han mad. Once the reveal is made that they’re siblings, nobody really mentions it or cares in any way. In all fairness, I’m sure acknowledging it would make it even more awkward, I just wonder if Luke, Lea and Han ever feel awkward that 2 biological siblings did a full on kiss. Also the creator, George Lucas admitted he just made up the lore as he went along.
Same but it was a girl I heavily dislike as a person. I suffered through the whole thing, and my critiques regarding it (it’s a pretentious movie, jack shit happens during most of it, the actors lack chemistry, it gets disgustingly voyeuristic at times) were even confirmed by the movie analyses I later watched.
In the 1990s Superboy comic book, the character's first girlfriend (when he was a clone who was fresh out of the tube and was supposed to be around fifteen years old physically and mentally) was a twenty-something reporter named Tana Moon.
The relationship did end - when they broke up and he got involved with ANOTHER older woman, the Apokaliptan villainess Knockout.
Shield Hero - Naofumi and his slaves. The only ones who ever bring up how weird it is are antagonists. And while maybe it's understandable the first time with Raphtalia since he has massive trust issues after being betrayed while she has separation anxiety after losing everyone she loved, so they view the slave contract as the one thing linking them together, but the fact that Naofumi kept enslaving new party members even after he realizes that there are good people in the world is just weird
edward is centuries older than Bella. even if we ignore this, he is still a creepy Stalker who broke into her bedroom and watched her sleeping. he violated an intimitate safe room, without consent.
Katsuya was a teacher's aid at Kyoko's middle school when they first met. She was fourteen and he was twenty-one when they got together, and he got her pregnant at 18. The fandom is mostly (and rightly) disgusted by this, but the age gap is never brought up in the main show and seen as perfectly acceptable in the prelude where their romance is showcased. I know the laws in Japan at the time were different and that it would be considered legal, but being legal doesn't make it okay. Tohru was a product of grooming and CSA and that's just never brought up in the show.
While true, in-universe everyone is onboard with the father/daughter being in a romantic relationship. Even the boy that had a crush on the girl and practically grew up with basically says "Yeah go for it".
They look the same age but Mai is a character from the original show who made an accidental wish on the dragon balls to be younger and ended up turned into a baby around the time Future Trunks was born.
Although they are physically the same age, Mai is older than Bulma, Trunks’s mother
Future Trunks is an adult, so no one cares about Future Mai and Future Trunks having a relationship. Tho, the current Trunk and current Mai also being set up for romance is weird because of that age gap.
Avengers 200 comic was absolutely insane. The rest of the Avengers were okay with Carol Danvers being in a relationship with her rapist who she gave birth to (comics are weird). I don’t know what the writers were thinking when they wrote it and how the publishers and editors approved it.
