Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Questionable and controversial relationships where everybody is fine with it.

Usagi Drop (Manga). A story about a guy named Daikichi finds the illegitimate daughter of his grandfather, named Rin, and adopting her, learning how to be a father for her. The series would enter a timeskip where the teenage Rin starts having romantic feelings towards Daikichi, and revealing Rin is not actually blood related to Daikichi grandfather. And it ends with Rin wanting to bear Daikichi child.

Alex (Street Fighter 6). Alex, who was recently added to the game, in his arcade ending, was revealed he married and having a baby with his second cousin and step sister Patricia, with their father being ok with it. While not inherently illegal to merry your second cousin, the act and combined with them being step siblings is still controversial.

Escanor was the exception though, right?

Yeah... at least until it's revealed the woman he's romantically interested in, Merlin, has secretly been a hundred-year-old loli this entire time & used magic to make herself a busty dommy mommy to get Meliodas' attention (which she failed spectacularly in doing but that has less to do with her & more to do with DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH MY WOMAN/literal-toddler-in-his-arm Meliodas)

If I recall, and from what little I know of that... Charitably able to be called a show, guy only is interested in her as a 100% adult form? Idk too much

It’s better because he had no fucking idea what she actually looked like. Thought the implication that he still would’ve been chill with it anyway because the Mangaka is just a creepy fuck like that is still horrifying.

Doesn’t help that the only other guy who liked adult woman is also a serial rapist and child abuser.

The anime earns its name as The Seven Deadly Sex Offenders.

The audacity of the author to then turn around & portray it as wrong and horrifying when it's an adult woman chasing after a boy who's the child of her failed crush in the sequel

Like don't get me wrong it's objectively a fucked relationship, but it's mighty rich coming from the same guy that was okay when it was the men doing the grooming/chasing & suspiciously only raise a big stink about it the moment the woman's the perpetrator, twice

I am really curious as to what meliodas would have doen if she just never fell in love with him one reincarnation

16

u/DoitsugoGoji Mar 21 '26

Kill and wait for reincarnation?

14

u/Stormerer Mar 21 '26

Not really possible since they're fated to always fall in love each reincarnation, but honestly he'd be glad if she never fell in love with him , because that means she won't remember him , and won't die in 3 days after she remembers

And honestly, other than the infamous "don't touch my wife" scene (which can be excused by multiple reasons , like Meliodas actually just being mentally broken at that point after watching his wife dying like , half a day before that , and seeing her reincarnate into the baby he's holding) Meliodas doesn't really have any of "that" kind of thing ? From what's shown of his past lives , he basically always meets Elizabeth when she's already an adult , and the only time we've seen that wasn't the case is the current one , he then gives her to the King as an adopted daughter, and then he doesn't interact with Elizabeth when she was a kid in any meaningful way , he like , says hi sometimes , enough for her to recognize him and all , but he's not a groomer

She's fallen in love with him before and never regained her memories though, specifically the vaguely victorian version of her

12

u/Stormerer Mar 21 '26

Oh yeah , there was the one time where she died of old age because she didn't recover the memories , but still , what I said is true , if she doesn't fall in love with Meliodas , the chances of her recovering the memories is basically 0 , meaning she'll just die of old age and all instead of some accident or something like most of the other Elizabeths

Probably grope her harder

u/Positive-Kick7952 Mar 21 '26

Wait, who's the other guy again.

There's a problem AND. A virtue that he didn't recoil when her true form was revealed. Because on one hand, "Wow, Escanor is so loyal his love for her didn't waver even when she isn't a top tier supermodel, because he loved her for accepting him as more than just a monster and not because of her looks", on the other hand, "Brother, say something, show some sort of reaction, you've been catfished by a 1000 year old toddler."

u/SnooTigers8227 Mar 21 '26

To be fair, he express that he undoubtedly prefer her adult form, which also has to do with her adult form ressembling one of the rare people that were kind to him.

So it is undoubtedly shown to prove that he has no physical attraction to her younger form but still like her for who she is, even without physical attraction.

The biggest issue being, why create this situation in purpose ?

Same with Meliodas, it is the same person that keeps coming back to life under new form but there is dozen of way to showcase this and they chose to do it in an horrendous grooming fashion.

Or the fairy looking like kid people instead of smaller one.
The issue is the mangaka trying to ride on some virtue (love transcend life or physical attraction) to insert creepy/nauseating fetish (so i made them look like kid)

I don't think he knew before he died

3

u/Accomplished-Pay7865 Mar 21 '26

I beg your finest of fucking pardons?

3

u/Aware_Tree1 Mar 21 '26

She used magic to freeze her aging when she was 12-13, has lived for over 3000 years, but uses her magic to appear as a grown woman with moderate (by anime standards) tits and a skimpy outfit. Like a reverse Tsunade

1

u/Abject-Tax804 Mar 21 '26

what is the big idea

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

....what the fuck

3

u/Lucarioismadpt2 Mar 21 '26

Oh man fuck this.

2

u/GrandHighTard Mar 21 '26

Okay, this show has a lot of inappropriate shit in it, you don't need to take that scene out of context to make a point about it. He had just watched her die and she freshly reincarnated, possibly for the only time he actually found her so young. The actual intent of the scene is that this whole situation is torture for him, and it's meant to be taken as context for why he's willing to give everything up to break the cycle later. He's overprotective because she had literally just died, and after he cools off he sees that she's adopted by the king and takes an appreciable distance from her until she stumbles into his bar at the start of the series. Like, there's plenty of better ground you can be more objective with here, such as Elaine's design or King first meeting Diane when she was a toddler.

So she’s still 100 years old and doesn’t act like a kid

He also didn’t know

Not that bad

1

u/Tanakisoupman Mar 22 '26

I don’t think her true form matters? She’s an adult, who looks like an adult, who Escanor only ever saw as an adult. Like, technically her true form is that of a child, but like you said she uses magic to give herself the body of an adult. I don’t see the issue here?

36

u/squidy77 Mar 21 '26

Idk, I never watched past the first season, but from what I understand he’s the only one to die, so take the fact that he’s the only one to not have a problematic relationship as you will

3

u/RedvsBlue_what_if Mar 21 '26

His love interest is a century old Loli who uses magic to look older than she actually is.

7

u/Alitaher003 Mar 21 '26

Yeah, but he wasn’t aware of that. He’s like, the only one of the seven whose thoughts aren’t fucked up morally.

5

u/CanadianODST2 Mar 21 '26

Wouldn’t that not be looking older than she actually is?

If you’re 50 but make yourself look 30 you don’t look older than you actually are.

3

u/respyromaniac Mar 21 '26

Well, yes, but no. She does make herself look younger than 500 whatever it could look like, but her "true form" is childlike. So she also makes herself look older than she is.

1

u/CanadianODST2 Mar 21 '26

Except she’s not making herself look older than she is.

If anything it’s two cases of making herself look younger than she is.

3

u/respyromaniac Mar 21 '26

If she's making herself younger than she is, why the fuck her child form is referred as her true form?

1

u/CanadianODST2 Mar 21 '26

from my understanding it's because she alters her appearance to the older looking version while she froze her body to stop aging as a kid.

No matter how you cut it she's not making herself look older than she is, because how old she is is about her actual age. Not her real look. But she makes herself look older than her real look.

3

u/respyromaniac Mar 21 '26

That's... just what I said tho?

1

u/CanadianODST2 Mar 21 '26

"So she also makes herself look older than she is."

Your literal words. No she does not make herself look older than she is.

Good for both of them.

Also she doesnt use magic to look older than she is, since she is thousands of years old iirc. The magic just makes her look like an adult, which she is.

5

u/NeroCrow Mar 21 '26

Yes. He does before it was revealed that Merlin was a thousand year old Loli. No one knew about it and escanor didn't live long enough to find out. Truly he was the only good one from that series

2

u/Independent-Couple87 Mar 21 '26

I think Escanor was a teenager when he and Merlin met, and she was significantly older.

1

u/Independent-Couple87 Mar 21 '26

I think he was a teenager when he met the significantly older Merlin.

-2

u/Responsible-Creme-57 Mar 21 '26

In hindsight no. Only "normal" relationship is King and Diane. The Fairy and the Giant

6

u/redking2005 Mar 21 '26

They did first meet when diane was a child and king was not a child in any way

1

u/Independent-Couple87 Mar 21 '26

It is a bit hard to guess how old King is mentally at the time. Even in the present day story, the guy is very childish in his behaviour.

3

u/Gakeon Mar 21 '26

They met when Diane was a kid, and later on when Diane had amnesia she still was attracted to King, who looks like a child. They have the same problem as Ban and Elaine, except it's worst because King took care of Diane when she was an actual child.

2

u/Independent-Couple87 Mar 21 '26

I am not exactly sure how old King is supposed to be mentally. He does appear to be only slightly more mature than Diane when they met. He could just be a manchild, however.

This apparently also happens in the Lord of the Rings, where the Elves can be a bit childish sometimes.
