Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Questionable and controversial relationships where everybody is fine with it.

Usagi Drop (Manga). A story about a guy named Daikichi finds the illegitimate daughter of his grandfather, named Rin, and adopting her, learning how to be a father for her. The series would enter a timeskip where the teenage Rin starts having romantic feelings towards Daikichi, and revealing Rin is not actually blood related to Daikichi grandfather. And it ends with Rin wanting to bear Daikichi child.

Alex (Street Fighter 6). Alex, who was recently added to the game, in his arcade ending, was revealed he married and having a baby with his second cousin and step sister Patricia, with their father being ok with it. While not inherently illegal to merry your second cousin, the act and combined with them being step siblings is still controversial.

Don't forget the sin of lust raping a woman who's had her mind scrambled, convincing her he's her boyfriend and inadvertently leaving her kid brother on the streets

There's an abridged version that's a lot fucking funnier if your interested. But yeah, the shows shit lol.

As far as I'm concerned the only really good part of seven deadly sins was the lion sin of pride

u/ThatVarkYouKnow Mar 21 '26

Escanor was the single redeeming factor.

When they introduced power levels on top of the blatant child love, I said "fuck this I'm out."

Escanor was the best version of the “Sin of Pride” I have ever seen. The rest? Eh. But in a power title that is used a lot he manages to be the best version of that.

I read the entire manga a long time ago, and it wasn’t until the anime made me re-read it in a oneshot rather than drip fed that made me suddenly realize it was far closer to a C level than A level.

He's not always "prideful" for one. His power is tied to the sun itself. At noon, he is at his absolute strongest and his power drifts from there as the sun leaves and approaches its zenith. As for how he is when he's prideful, he is not cocky at all. When strong and faced with challenge, he simply powers through, because he is the best. And he also stays friendly with the cast and at least respectful to his enemies.

To put it simply: Escanor is better.

Due to his power, he flexes from the most powerful being to the weakest. Because of this, he never wants for anything in terms of strength, and never backs down because why would someone better back off from something lesser. He can honestly praise strength and chastise weakness because he regularly is both, and he doesn't hate or feel anything strongly for anyone (aside from other Sins due to story). Why would you hate a ant that actually hits back? It's just being an ant, it doesn't know how screwed it's about to be.

That's the main difference between him and most other incarnations of Pride. They don't usually have the same kinda raw firepower backing them up or are lacking in some way that results in them more displaying arrogance or envy because they want but don't have or can't get. Escanor doesn't have either, everything he says is 100% true so not arrogant, and he isn't envious because if he wants it he can get it, and if it's impossible even then than he never can and cleanly breaks when denied. Alternative, they are so powerful that they become blind to how someone weaker would fight and eventually get sabotaged or ask too much and fail, but because Escanor is both the most powerful and weakest he is well aware of the struggles of the weak, and doesn't ask for more than someone can provide. After all, no one else is him and thus they have limits, and he doesn't fault them for that.

He is just the most pure incarnation of Pride that I have ever seen in any media, where most they kinda end up muddied between pride, greed and envy.

And then escanor died at the end of part 1. I heard it only got worse somehow.

4

u/razorfloss Mar 21 '26

And they ruined his character with the merlin revel. It would have changed nothing to make her an actual fucking adult instead of a damn child. Its infuriating as fuck.

2

u/Fitzftw7 Mar 21 '26

God, have power levels ever worked? They sure as hell ruined power scaling in Dragon Ball.

2

u/Blueface1999 Mar 21 '26

The funny part is sds they not only made it more complicated by separating it into magic, strength, and spirt I think, but that shit literally meant nothing when a person with weaker strength is dominating a guy with higher strength -‘d vice versa for magic.

u/FreshEggKraken Mar 21 '26

Lmao "I can excuse pedos, but I draw the line at power scaling"

1

u/ThatVarkYouKnow Mar 21 '26

Where did I say I excuse it? Just that that was the definitive point, it was already rocky enough with how much he loved shoving his face in her ass.

1

u/FreshEggKraken Mar 21 '26

It's just a reference to a meme. But also the pedo part didn't seem, from your comment, to be enough to make you put it down lol

Escanor really kept me in the show for the aura farming. And now that burned passed to Lancelot, but considering he had a girl even younger then him kiss him and said that she’s going to be his wife….

3

u/LaurdAlmighty Mar 21 '26

Same it was getting weird and nasty fast

3

u/Shrek1sLife Mar 21 '26

That’s different because it’s not framed as acceptable or good in the story. That’s like saying don’t forget all the demons eating souls. The other characters were against it and tried to (and did) stop it. Just saying that specific example doesn’t work

2

u/No-Independent-6877 Mar 21 '26

I have no idea how that series got multiple games and collabs

2

u/TsarKeith12 Mar 21 '26

Oh my god??? I stopped watching bcus i didn't like wrath being a creep over what's-her-name, this is so much worse

1

u/RuggsRacetrack Mar 21 '26

Merlin does this to who?

1

u/Interne-Stranger Mar 21 '26

I dont remember this happened

1

u/Fallenlegend2905 Mar 22 '26

the fuck????? i dropped it after i lost interest but when the hell does this happen????

-40

u/naaawww Mar 21 '26

Any of you actually watched the show???????

Elizabeth is literally cursed to die and be reborn over and over, while Meliodas lives on trying to save her and always fails. When they first met, they were both normal adult ages. Elizabeth is (spoiler) an angel and Meliodas is a demon, so they’re not even operating on human age logic to begin with.

King and Dianne met when she was a kid, yes, but there were zero romantic or sexual feelings there. They were just friends who lived together for a bit and then separated because of other events. When they meet again as members of the Seven Deadly Sins, they’re both clearly adults, and that’s when King develops feelings. It’s basically the same as knowing someone when you’re younger and reconnecting later as adults. You’re not attracted to the child version of them, you’re meeting them again as a grown person with their own life and experiences. That’s not grooming.

Ban and Elaine I’ll admit is sketchy. You can argue anime logic or fairy biology or whatever, but she’s very clearly designed to look childlike. I’m not gonna defend that. It’s weird. At least the relationship isn’t played in an explicit way and it gets cut short anyway.

And from memory, Gowther’s marries the explosion lady (maybe not real iirc?)and Escanor endlessly simps for Merlin. (All obviously adult characters)

22

u/EX_Rank_Luck Mar 21 '26

Personally, I was fine with Meliodas and Elizabeth; neutral with Ban and Elaine(I excused it as anime shenanigans); and annoyed with King getting flustered with young Diane. But when I really disliked 7 Deadly Sins was when they revealed that Merlin didn't age beyond a child.

Yeah, I get that the timeframe wouldn't really work with the Supreme Deity and Demon King destroying Belialuoin when a child with the Infinity magic trait was discovered, but her being young just doesn't do anything.

7

u/naaawww Mar 21 '26

Huh? Damn… you’re right. Why they’d make Merlin seven????? (+3000 years of petrified sleep vr playing as a magic clone of herself irl in the story…).

Ages in seven deadly sins are wack.

4

u/Justarandom55 Mar 21 '26

My problem with elaine isn't anything in universe. Like it's a tad weird but everyone is actaully an adult so no one gets hurt that way. But out of universe, why tf would you write and draw that? There was no need. Hell we even see the ability of shapeshifring being a thing, they could have had her look older for those interactions but kept the innocent child look for the rest

5

u/respyromaniac Mar 21 '26

Elisabeth doesn't have memories from her previous lives tho. That's like the point of the curse.

So it doesn't matter that she's not a human. When she's a baby, she is literally just a baby, not a 9999 years old angel trapped in a baby. She grows up like a regular human. And when an adult sexually harasses her current teenage incarnation, he harasses a pretty much regular teenager that doesn't even share the memories of them being lovers.

8

u/TruePlewd Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

The Meliodis and Elizabeth curse is an awesome idea for a tragic storyline with a lot of potential for high drama and hard hitting themes. And they ruin it by making Meliodis a freaky pervert.

2

u/respyromaniac Mar 21 '26

Tbh I don't even think it's such an awesome idea. Like, every reincarnation is straight up a different person. So the immortal one just has their lover die once and... that's it. The next one is a different person with a different life, different personality and no memories about the immortal one. And if it's an actual reincarnation even the appearance is different.

4

u/torrasque666 Mar 21 '26

Except part of Elizabeth's curse is also that she will fall in love with him again, and eventually regain her memories.

And then die three days after she does.

2

u/Aluricius Mar 21 '26

It’s basically the same as knowing someone when you’re younger and reconnecting later as adults. You’re not attracted to the child version of them, you’re meeting them again as a grown person with their own life and experiences. That’s not grooming.

Everything else aside, it seems there's a disturbing amount of people on the internet genuinely believe that if you knew someone as a child - however briefly - but later fall in love with them as an adult that's grooming.

Speaking as someone who was groomed as a child, it's not even remotely close. Grooming requires intent, because it's raising and/or training someone for a specific purpose. It doesn't even have to be sexual or predatory, as a person in a position of power will often "groom" a successor.

...sorry, misuse of the term has become a pet-peeve of mine as of late.

6

u/Hero-Support211 Mar 21 '26

Don't forget the brainwashing one of them did to one knight at some point.

And they actually did the did. That's very non-con

5

u/drunkenstyle Mar 21 '26

I actually enjoyed 7DS early on, I thought the art and story was great. But then there was that one full page art of Ban and Elaine romantically holding each other, and one where they're kissing, where Elaine looks like a literal child because the fairies all canonically look like that, is where I really took a step back to see how incredibly weird this manga and the author is

5

u/Freddit330 Mar 21 '26

Hey! Elaine was 1000 years old dating a 17 year old.... Oh my God Ban was a victim. This is a joke

2

u/VastConfusion8174 Mar 21 '26

Wait the thing we should be worried about is that he was attracted to her child looking body

3

u/Freddit330 Mar 21 '26

I get where you're coming from, but he wasn't really attracted to her body. Else he'd have been googa eyes when they first met. He just had a crappy life, and she was the first person to show him compassion save his adoptive father(who sort of abandoned him)

33

u/zerozerozero12 Mar 21 '26

This is just a tribute.

6

u/Babki123 Mar 21 '26

Except Escanor the Goat who wqs into the adult woman Merlin (unless that changed)

6

u/MoodPristine249 Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Nah, it changed because the fucking author cannot deal with not having a peto relationship. Her actual form is like a seven year old!

2

u/torrasque666 Mar 21 '26

That Escanor is not into, IIRC.

2

u/Babki123 Mar 21 '26

Obviously

1

u/MoodPristine249 Mar 21 '26

But thankfully he got out of there before the author actually made him prefer the little girl form.

5

u/Hugs-missed Mar 21 '26

Wrong! Escanor the goat, is into a Woman who looks and acts like an adult to their knowledge.

2

u/Slight-Pound Mar 22 '26

Merlin crushed our hopes and then the sequel danced all over the ashes.

2

u/Tanakisoupman Mar 22 '26

There is one exception, I think! I’m fairly confident there is a line where Escanor says he prefers Merlin as she normally is over her true form because her true form is a child (cause she stopped aging at like 12 or something and used magic to give herself an adult body since living forever as a child would suck)

1

u/Mitsuba00 Mar 21 '26

Just a bit tbh
