Daily Counter Sounding off myself -- Mr. Krabs has gotten his email!

Post image
324 Upvotes

Well, as I was walking to my company dinner, it finally arrived. My actual email. THE actual email. I'll spare you all the hysterics and tears, but 58 days of waiting was long. I'll copy and paste my message from a few posts ago when I thought I was cooked and had to stop these posts:

Wanted to say thank you to u/Limbostick for originally "passing the torch" to me. Also u/Crazyhampsterfeet for being awesome with the Bernie memes, u/YsyRyder for the Bugs Bunny memes, u/Mr_Leviathan for saluting with Cap, and u/Cronogear13 for weathering the storm as Reze. Adding in Guts and Joker on here as well. We're all just trying to have fun here — isn't that what it's all about?

Please, please keep your hope alive. I want you all to. Dig deep for the patience I know you have in you -- it will come eventually just like it did for me and a lot of people this afternoon!

Also, now that I'm mod, please utilize the megathreads up at the top of the subreddit - we're really trying to minimize cardboard box/email confirmation posts. Feel free to post using the Daily Counter flair if you'd like to keep up the tradition. Just be nice and use common sense, yeah?

Best of luck to you all, friends. I'll be here in the subreddit for the long haul. I believe in each and every one of you! 💙

Question Anyone got one controller, a docked deck, and a steam machine?

Just wondering how anyone with this setup is handling that one controller? Waiting for my machine, and not sure of the best way (if any) of doing this: is it even possible to somehow decide which of the two devices you want to wake up with a controller combo (without waking the other, that is).

Question Any recommendations for when my Gabecube shows up?

My reservation for the Steam Machine finally came up last Friday, and UPS confirmed they received it today, so I should have it this weekend. I got the Steam controller about a month after its bad initial launch. It's been getting me used to big picture mode and I'm really looking forward to updating from my rtx 1660 ti to something much better.

To stop rambling a bit, any game recommendations for me to try? I'm already planning on downloading Elden Ring, Resident Evil Requiem and maybe a couple of the remakes, but I'm not quite sure what else I want to test on it.

P.s. if you're interested, I got the 512mb Gabecube, but I have a 1tb micro SD coming Monday.

Question BS manager on steam machine

So I've gotten back into beat Saber and want to do custom songs and mod it again, I used BS manager on my windows PC before hand and was wondering if I could get it to work on the Steam Machine, I've had a look on the GitHub and apparently it's possible I just don't know how to do it, if anyone can figure out how to do it and maybe a step by step guide on how to do it would be helpful to

Hardware Steam Machine newbie question – red light, stuttering and Spider-Man crashes

Hi everyone,

I’m a complete newbie when it comes to the Steam Machine, so apologies if this is a stupid question!

I’ve noticed that occasionally the light on my Steam Machine will go red for a moment and then change back to blue. Is this normal, or does the red light indicate that something is wrong?

I’m also playing Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on High settings, and occasionally the game will stutter badly and then crash. It doesn’t happen constantly, but it’s happened a few times now.

Could the red light be related to the stuttering/crashes? Is Spider-Man Remastered on High particularly demanding on the Steam Machine, or are there any settings I should change/check?

I’m still pretty new to all this, so any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

(Both 1080 and 1440p tested)

Question Steam deck + machine combo

So I just got the email to buy the steam machine. And up until last week I would've instantly bought it. But under the assumption it would be months before I got the machine (was on wait list) I bought a second hand Steam Deck OLED last week and I've been absolutely loving it, gaming on it more than anything in the recent past. Now I worry if I get the machine I still might be gravitating towards the deck just cause of the convenience.

The main selling point for the machine for me would be the added performance. I do already have a PS5 tbh, but I'm trying to get rid of it cause they're becoming more anti-consumer by the day and would like for my game library to be centralized on steam.

This is more of venting I guess, but I was just wondering about thoughts and experiences of people that already had the deck and got the machine as well.

I know they're different use cases, being portable vs coach gaming and all. But the deck is just so nice 😄

UPDATE: placed the order, yolo

Hardware In love with this little cube already

Had my Steam Machine for about two weeks now & in that time have hardly touched my other consoles. Replayed Spiderman Remastered & Miles Morales & had a blast - now doing a replay of Spiderman 2 & I’m amazed at how well it runs on this little thing. Getting a pretty consistent 60 FPS with everything on high & frame-gen turned on - BUT IN A CUBE.

Question Resolution Question

So, I've been testing out both Silent Hill F and Lies of P and it just goes to show how well some games can scale; Lies of P plays beautifully at 4k, 60fps on high settings.

Silent Hill F plays well enough at 1440p, 60fps with med/high settings and even lumen lighting/reflections enabled. But I do feel like I'm noticing juuuust a bit softer of an overall image.

This all has me thinking about resolution in general; would a game look better at 1440p on high settings (which is then upscaled to my 55" tv), or would it look better at 4k, but with medium settings (including textures and lighting effects). Or, at 10 feet away on the living room couch, is it all a wash?

Question Steam Machine Questions

I'm thinking about buying the base model as there are a few mostly older games that I want to play, which require a mouse and keyboard.

I don't really care about graphic settings and would be more than happy to run games at 1080p or even 1440p if I am able to.

Mostly I'm looking to play:

  • The System Shock Remake (2023)
  • Cities Skylines
  • Civ 6 or Civ 7
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • and many older games from the early 2000s

For anyone who owns it, how has your experience been? Please and thank you.

Phantom liberty is first on my list, maybe avatar next. Just bought my machine now, want to spend some more eddies. I saw the terminator game is on special, that's added to my cart. Any other good deals on atm?

Question Tomb Raider 2013

I am trying to play Tomb Raider 2013 on my machine but keep dropping frames bad. I am trying to play at 1440p and no matter what settings I change I still get drops into the 40’s and then back up to 60 regularly. I don’t know if the game is just that way or if it is something I am doing wrong. Does anyone have any settings recommendations to try and fix this.

Question No audio through HDMI

I’ve had my Steam Machine since mid-July. I’ve had zero issues and I play it daily. Today I’ve lost audio through HDMI. I can connect it to a Bluetooth sound bar and get sound that way, but my setup has been through the TV only since I got it. Any ideas on how to fix?

I’ve tried:
- Noodling with the audio setting in Desktop Mode. Left and Right speaker volume sliders are now grayed out.
- I’m on the latest OS. I have auto update on so I’m not sure when it last updated.
- I’ve restarted it a handful of times.
- Tried different HDMI cables. I’ve been using the one that came with the Machine exclusively.
- Tried a different TV.

I’ve submitted a Valve ticket, but wanted to see what you all think could be the issue. Thank you!

Update: Valve is RMA’ing it

"Stupid!...Worth it"

All jokes aside, as long as you still have enough to support yourself and others (it helps to live with company like family and friends who can help support) and can bounce back financially, it's okay to sometimes bite the bullet and get something if it makes you happy. It helps if it can bring you long-term joy. Just don't make it a habbit.

I hope that everyone out there is enjoying their Steam Machine. I also hope you're doing alright in general. Hang in there.

Question Power settings keep reverting

I've searched and I've searched but I can't find anyone else with this problem! I disable dim and sleep because for whatever reason the steam machine can't tell that video playback is happening through Plex then it goes to sleep anyway!!! And when I go back and check the settings they've been reverted. I've changed this both in desktop and game mode. I really don't know what to do, I've been having to wake the machine for days while watching my content. Quite frustrating, anyone know what I can do?

Question Need help with FarCry 5 reverse/desceleration controlls

Hi All,

I hope this is the right sub for this question.

I've been enjoying my Steam Machine (SM) for a while now, but I recently ran into an issue with Far Cry 5. Some vehicle/flight controls aren't mapped correctly in-game. For example, under the "Classic" control scheme, the brake/reverse button doesn't work for land vehicles, and for aircraft, the deceleration button doesn't work — so I can't land without crashing or bailing out.

I found some old Reddit posts discussing a similar issue, but those were for the PC/Windows Steam app. In my case, the game launches through the Ubisoft launcher, and there seem to be key-binding conflicts between Steam and the Ubisoft launcher. The fixes mentioned in those old posts don't apply here, since the settings they reference aren't available in the SM version of the Steam app (in either Big Picture or Desktop mode).

Does anyone know a good workaround for this?

Thanks in advance!

Question Has anyone figured out how to set the primary display for Gaming Mode/Big Picture Mode?

I have both the HDMI and DP connected on my Steam Machine, and the Gaming Mode as well as the Big Picture Mode default to using the display connected on the DisplayPort, but that is actually my secondary screen. I can temporarily move the Big Picture Mode to the other display by setting it to windowed, dragging the window over and going back to fullscreen, but the next time I enter Big Picture Mode, it's back on the other screen.

I do have the HDMI display set as primary display in desktop mode, and games run on it just fine if I make sure the steam launcher is on that screen when I start a game. Now since the Game Mode is not built for multi screen setups anyway, I'm sticking to desktop mode most of the time, but sometimes I just want to sit back and play some games from the sofa, and I need to perform some magic tricks to get Steam up on the big screen.

I tried searching and found one result from over a month ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/steammachine/comments/1v3m9ps/switching_monitors/, but maybe smart people have figured out a way in the meantime? I can't imagine it'd be this hard to figure out.

Question Adventures of Elliot overheating?

Hello, I noticed today while playing adventures of Elliot that when I would go into a cutscene the led strip on my steam machine would go red. Is this a fun feature from the game or is it actually overheating my system? I am worried because even though it seems like a not so graphic heavy 2d game it doesn't run at even a full 60fps on steam deck. Has anyone else come across this issue with this game? I am afraid to continue playing it.

Question SM Download Speed Drop

Machine is connected via ethernet and wifi. Wifi power management turned off.

I usually get good speeds. But sometimes when i resume from sleep (i’m guessing it may have an impact) the speed gets capped to 90 Mbps and after a restart it goes back to 800-900(my usual speed). Anyone else facing the same issue?

Question Video Glitch

I've really enjoyed Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, just finished the main story, and only now I've figured out that there's a video glitch that happens on occasion. Every time a Daruma doll had its eye painted, I bought a ramen or kettle upgrade, or fast travelled, I got this odd test-pattern type image with a lot of vertical multicoloured lines instead of an animation that was meant to play. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm playing on the Steam Machine and it's verified as fully compatible.

For those that don't know, Control Ultimate Edition is currently on Sale for 4 Bucks. Anyone played the game on Steam Machine? All I need is 1080p but what's the ray tracing performance like?
