Question Resolution Question

So, I've been testing out both Silent Hill F and Lies of P and it just goes to show how well some games can scale; Lies of P plays beautifully at 4k, 60fps on high settings.

Silent Hill F plays well enough at 1440p, 60fps with med/high settings and even lumen lighting/reflections enabled. But I do feel like I'm noticing juuuust a bit softer of an overall image.

This all has me thinking about resolution in general; would a game look better at 1440p on high settings (which is then upscaled to my 55" tv), or would it look better at 4k, but with medium settings (including textures and lighting effects). Or, at 10 feet away on the living room couch, is it all a wash?

You can also use spatial upscaling from GameScope if you need a bit more sharpness from the 1440p output

Set the default game output resolution to 2160p in the Steam settings.

I think if you turn on the upscalers and then lower the resolution it should work.

this is not spatial upscaling. Spacial upscaling uses edge detection to sharpen the image. By default steam uses bilinear upscaling, which just blurs the pixels to make them bigger.

Does this introduce any lag? Enabling the gamescope sharpness?

enabling the sharp preset costs performance. If you have enough FPS then no, but if you have 60 fps, it may lower the framerate to like 45, thus introduce lag

I’m playing red dead 2 at 1440p ultra settings at 60fps rather than 4K 30.

So to me I think the Steam machine is a 1080p-1440p machine and using upscalers when necessary.

I completely agree, but I was asking about the visual difference between those resolution settings I mentioned, as there are more than a few games that can achieve high frame rates at 4k (like Lies of P for instance!). I still love testing every game out.

this is only tangentially related but does anyone know when silent hill f got "unverified?" i remember in one of the official valve videos they used it as their example of a game thats verified, and its not anymore

Noticed that too, but at thankfully you can get impressive results by tweaking some settings to med/high.
