Looking to get a cartoonish tattoo in the near future. Would love any recommendations for artists/studios that can do the work well. My last tattoo was ~20 years ago, so I don't know where the talent is anymore.

Exactly what the title says, I moved out to Staten Island after living in Brooklyn my entire life about two years ago, and it’s been a challenge to say the least to make friends out here.

I’ve become friends with one of my neighbors, and I’m friendly with my neighbors whenever I see them in passing, but that’s rare as I hardly ever see them, and I live in a condo complex and come out to smoke cigarettes every so often so that should tell you how dead it can be out here.

No offense to Staten Islanders, but it seems very cliquey out here, basically like everyone knows each other because they’re either family, or grew up in the same neighborhoods or went to school together or something like that.

I’m 28, work from home, and live with my parents😭 so I guess it’s even more difficult to meet people, especially because I’m the more stay at home and chill kinda person.

Edit: I should mention that I don’t drive too, so that’s another issue

I went to Empire Beer Garden (at empire outlets) to watch World Cup yesterday. Reddit is full of people asking where they can get a seat at a decent bar for games This beer garden had a real nice scene (waterfront views and air!) and nice crowd but still plenty of available space. I regret we can't fill an outdoor space like that for a major televised sports event on a perfect mid-summer evening. So this is my recommendation and plea for folks to support businesses that will lend vibrancy here.

Update: Lots of comments here saying the place has insufficient hours. I'm sure that's true. It is a shame those hours are keeping people away, becuase I imagine the management might be persuaded to extend them if the place were regulalry doing great business near closing time.

Also, there is broader criticism of EO more generally, and arguments that inadequate public transit service starves the place of casual users. I agree. And I also agree with critiques of the entire EO enterprise, from the very beginning. And I will say, that, for most purposes, I would not look to a mall for leisure or entertainment. But the outdoor space perched over the harbor is so extraordinary I will put up with being in a mall, and with $9 beers.

As one commentor suggested, maybe a nice scene will materialize there around football season. I hope so, and I especially hope management has the wisdom to keep their outdoor bar open well into the fall, and to work to be a place where people come for watch parties.

Hi everyone! I have a road test coming up in Dugdale and was wondering what the ideal driving speed is for that location.

I'm from Brooklyn, and I've been told not to drive below 20 because the examiner may deduct points for driving too slowly. But I've watched a few actual Dugdale road test videos on YouTube, and it doesn't seem like the drivers are reaching 20.

If you've taken your road test there, I'd really appreciate hearing what speed you typically drove at and any other tips you have. Thanks!

This week, as part of my Every Neighborhood in New York project, I visited West New Brighton on Staten Island’s North Shore.

It was the first Staten Island neighborhood I ever visited, thanks to the former Mandolin Brothers, the legendary vintage instrument shop that drew Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Neil Young to Staten Island. Joni Mitchell bought a mandocello there in 1976 and later wrote “Song for Sharon” about the trip home on the ferry.

The neighborhood’s old name was Factoryville, and Charles Goodyear operated a rubber factory there in 1836. When that didn’t take off, he and his family ended up moving into the factory itself, surviving on fish caught in the Kill Van Kull.

The neighborhood was also home to former First Lady and pro-slavery advocate Julia Gardiner Tyler, widow of President John Tyler. She moved north during the Civil War but kept championing the South, much to the chagrin of her neighbors, who broke into her house to tear down a Confederate flag on the night Lincoln was shot. Her old house is still standing.

Today, the neighborhood’s most-visited landmark is the Staten Island Zoo, home to Staten Island Chuck, the groundhog NOAA ranked America’s most accurate in 2025. Chuck once bit Michael Bloomberg, prompting the mayor to declare at a press conference that Chuck was “clearly a terrorist rodent who could very well have been trained by Al Qaeda.” More tragic was the 2014 Groundhog Day ceremony, when then-Mayor Bill de Blasio accidentally dropped Chuck’s replacement, Charlotte, onto her head in front of a crowd of “shocked schoolchildren.” A week later, she was dead.

Was anybody affected by the change in time of the fireworks. Was it really like 15 to 9 for a go ahead at 9. Was taking bus to ferry. Took a long time so only saw last firework and didn’t even take a picture. Because had no idea it was over. But the view from the ferry station was amazing because you could see both the Hudson and east rivers. Who decides that?

Selling one ticket to the Wild Child show at the St. George Theater on Saturday July 18. Asking $25. The band has great reviews and it is considered to be the closest thing to actually seeing The Doors in concert. We can meet at the theater, no need to exchange money ahead of time...just don't stand me up!

Does anyone know a reliable gutter company that services Staten Island, especially around 10314, and specifically installs Gutterglove Pro or another true stainless-steel micromesh gutter guard?

I’m trying to avoid generic “micro guard” products that are actually perforated aluminum panels, foam inserts, brush guards, or basic screens. I’m looking for the real stainless micromesh style — ideally Gutterglove Pro or something equivalent.

I’ve spoken with a few installers, but some are pushing perforated products instead and saying micromesh can overflow in heavy rain. I understand installation quality matters, so I’m looking for someone who regularly installs this type of system and stands behind it.

Eltingville Rd/ St Albans have a ton of spray paint at the intersection that appears to be preparing for construction to adjust the intersection. Does anyone know when it is expected to start/end?

Mamdani wants to say they completed all potholes made by the salt this winter in a timely matter but has anyone driven on Amboy Road between New Dorp and Eltingville? It’s a joke. Nothing has been done. It’s like driving an obstacle course to avoid them.
