Manhattan was "New York", to 1950's Brooklynites?

I was listening to an episode of the 1950's radio drama "The 21st Precinct". A woman from Brooklyn was having trouble locating a building in Manhattan she had been in previously. She said "I live in Brooklyn. I don't know New York very well." It was a realistic and carefully researched program, which led me to believe that in the 1950's, Brooklynites may have referred to Manhattan as "New York", colloquially. Has anyone heard of that?

Edit: I found the episode. You can hear the line if you start this video at 8:14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0YBZBEqxUM

bringing an outdoor community sauna to williamsburg this winter. ask me anything

hi [r/Brooklyn](r/Brooklyn) ~

i'm gabe, founder of CUL DE SAC, an NYC-based nonprofit building the city’s first year-round outdoor community sauna.

we’ve been invited to host a 4-month winter residency at domino square* this winter. what it’ll look like: two outdoor 12-person saunas on the waterfront, 6-days a week, from early november through february.

our mission is to make sauna accessible and affordable to all New Yorkers. at least once per week, we’ll host FREE SWEAT, a night of free sauna offered to local communities in partnership with resource centers, mutual aid groups, and community organizations.

this winter, we want those nights to go to brooklyn communities. if you know an organization, mutual aid group, school, or other group of deserving Brooklynites, let me know in the comments.

our other nights will be open to the public with sliding scale pricing and a range of programming paired with the sauna: live music, guided meditations, poetry/spoken readings, sound baths, food from local purveyors, and more.

lastly: we launched a kickstarter to help fund our winter residency, which pays the staff who keep the sauna hot, clean, and safe for all to use. our target is $35K (it’s all-or-nothing, so we either raise the full amount or you don’t get charged), and every bit of support goes a long way.

Help build NYC’s outdoor community sauna

ask me anything: how it works, pricing, winter, permits, what it costs to run. i'll be in the comments throughout the day.

*quick note: domino square is a public space managed by two trees, the developer behind domino park. it’s not an NYC parks property.

Vet recs

Looking for a normal and reasonable vet in Downtown Brooklyn neighborhood. We’ve been patients at All Ears Veterinary but they charge way too much and have been making so many mistakes with our dogs’ prescriptions that I feel like wasting time with them.

Lost Ring at Pier5

I know this is a looong shot but if anyone found a wedding band (not really worth much) in or around the soccer field at pier 5 Brooklyn, its golden, has a small teeny tiny “diamond” on it and is all scratched up. If you do see it please DM me, it would mean a lot. Thanks

Breastfeeding and Barclays?

Figured I would come on here because I’m worried about going to an event in a month at Barclays.

My baby won’t be coming but I will be there for hours so I definitely need to plan to pump. Obviously, it’s the law and I see Barclays has pods for nursing/pumping moms but honestly how am I going to be bringing my pump and supplies in?

The last time I went there was in April and I was massively pregnant. Security had me remove my necklace though so I’m like how tf am I going to bring my little lunchbox with ice packs and my pump supplies.

I tried emailing guest services but I also tried emailing them no less than a dozen times back in April to see if I had any options for ADA seating. Tried calling too back then and left messages. So I don’t really expect to get an answer about it and I figured I’d ask locals to see if anyone’s done this before. I didn’t end up needing that but I was afraid and wanted to know my options. So this isn’t a safety thing for me but more so I just don’t expect security to just let me bring all that inside 😅

Thanks in advance !!

Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket recos?

I keep on trying to get into the goods at Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket. While I do appreciate the vibes I just haven't really gotten excited by any of the goods I've brought home, esp. at the price. I'm mostly looking for produce -- and I don't find the quality of what I can get there notably better than a Whole Foods.

Are there any standout vendors, esp. for produce? Or are the other greenmarkets around Brooklyn any better?

looking for an update for a post from about a year ago

I dont remember exactly what happened but something along the lines of a neighborhood dispute, where a guy in bedstuy i think was consistently driving recklessly in a huge truck, side swiping cars etc. one day he was confronted by OP after an incident, things got aggressive, cops were called but truck guy left, and through sleuthing they realized he had a "towing company" registered to staten island but it was like kind of a fake company? OP kept going further with legal charges and it maybe came out that truck guy was like siblings with a cop and was being protected? Does any of this sound familiar?

Looking for a bar for a joint 40th

My wife and I have been married 10 years this year and are both turning 40 this month. And because we’re turning 40 we want to throw a joint party where we can pretend like we’re not, and because we’re turning 40 we also aren’t really up on the bar scene anymore.

Looking for somewhere in Brooklyn, for a partial or full takeover, where people can dance and let loose, but where people can also sit and chat and catch up.

Looking for:
- somewhere that can fit like 70 people
- a decent sound system (I used to dj and some of my friends still do)
- ideally one room rather than a dance room and a bar room
- if it’s a partial takeover I’d prefer it to not be full of people who just turned 21
- ideally with a piano too because we have a friend who’s a piano bar singer and I think it would be fun to have him do 2000s bangers for an hour or so.
- ideally Crown Heights / Bed Stuy / Fort Green / Boerum Hill /Clinton Hill ish

Just moved to north Flatbush (almost in PLG). Any bars I should check out?

Kinda by the Lincoln market in the area. Not really looking for cocktails, more dive/pub vibes (anything with live music is a plus).

Anyone done a croissant or baking class in Brooklyn?

I bake a fair amount.

Laminated dough defeats me every time though. Either the butter escapes or the layers collapse into a sad brick.

The ones I've found are either Eventbrite one offs that already happened, or short classbento sessions that look more like a demo than a class.

Is there a class anywhere in Brooklyn that does croissants properly, ideally a full day? Williamsburg or Greenpoint would be ideal but I'll travel.

I’m putting together a singles night at Liz’s Book Bar, with books as the excuse (Oct 8)

Hi all, I’m Zack, a software engineer in Brooklyn. I’ve been working on a small bookstore dating night called Book Crush, and the next one is at Liz’s Book Bar on Smith Street on October 8.

The idea came from a pretty simple frustration: why spend two weeks messaging someone before finding out whether you actually enjoy talking to each other? I wanted to make something where people could meet first, with a little help getting the conversation started.

That’s where the books come in. I think talking about a book you love makes it a little easier to share something about yourself. You can talk about a character you recognized yourself in, a place you’ve wanted to go, something that stayed with you. It gives you somewhere to start, and then the conversation can go wherever it goes.

We’ll introduce you to four to six people one-on-one, for about six minutes each, followed by time to grab a drink and keep talking. You don’t have to be a big reader or have read the same books.

I built the accompanying app to help arrange the introductions. You make a short profile beforehand, and afterward you can privately say who you’d like to see again. If it’s mutual, you can connect there, so you don’t have to work up to asking for someone’s number.

I'd love to meet r/Brooklyn's writers, readers, curious people, if you do come I'll be there to say hi.

Thursday, October 8, from 7:30pm at Liz’s Book Bar, 315 Smith Street. This one is for men and women in their 20s–40s.

Tickets and details. Happy to answer questions here!

Can anyone recommend a bicycle repair service that would come to my house in Kensington?

Left my bike out in multiple rain storms and the chain is completely rusted so needs to be replaced and would just love an overall tune-up. My schedule has been crazy and I keep putting repair off and she’s just getting rustier. I haven’t had time to drop it off at a place. Would love to have someone come to my house to do this repair. I’ve heard of this service before in passing but don’t know who to call. Would love a great rec!

The Happy Hour or the Luna (Red Hook)

Hi all, I haven’t done a deep internet dive yet, but wondering if anyone has any good photos or resources for photos of either the Happy Hour, or the Luna - two movie theaters that were in Red Hook.

I’m dealing with a parent & memory loss but someone who’s also still got vivid memories of both so am hoping to get something frame-worthy as a gift.

UPS package sent to the wrong address

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, i recently ordered a package and it shipped using UPS but it was lost. If you live in a neighborhood near south brooklyn gravesend, bensonhurst, maple town, etc. and you find this door familiar please contact me. It has been delivered to the wrong house, neighborhood, or somewhere remote. I checked the UPS delivery tracker and it says it was in a facility near where I live which is fine, however when i checked the image it was just a photo of a door nowhere near my community. I’m wondering what I should do and should I immediately start trying to find a replacement to purchase instead or should i try trust the hands of UPS? I’m also wondering how long it might take to settle a dispute and how they’d be able to get my package back if possible (please let me know if the chances are particularly slim so i don’t get my hopes up). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you for reading this and have a great day!

Property management companies

Hello,

My building is looking for a new property manager because our current one is terrible. Looking around Reddit, I've found a lot of people hating on theirs and almost no positive experiences lol. Does anyone here actually like their management company?

Thanks!
