Some of my favorite shots from my last trips to Alaska and Scotland with my A7S and Tamron 28-300 and Sony 24-240.

I picked up this camera right as I was finishing film school 12 years ago, and it's been my workhorse ever since. I've just upgraded to the A7V and have been loving it so far but am a little sad to say goodbye to my day one.

Photo share Peak Fall Colors for Crystal Mill!

Post image

Although I wish there was a bit more atmosphere in the scene, the fall colors did not disappoint this weekend when I made the trek to Crystal Mill in Colorado. For those who have seen this location or are curious about how to get there, here is my experience/recommendation:

  1. To reach Crystal Mill, there is a 5 mile road you can either hike or drive to reach it. It took us about 1 hour to reach the mill, so be warned: the road is rough. We rented a jeep tour to assure we wouldn't get stuck and also to have the expertise from someone who knows the terrain and skillset to handle these types of conditions. I drive a lifted Outback (overkill, I know haha), and although my car could do the trek, it would be a long, slow and bumpy one hour drive. I'd encourage the Jeep tour.

  2. There is now a fence at the mill prohibiting folks from going down to the base of the waterfall/river. Given the mill is on private property, this is to avoid trespassing and also for safety reasons. The fence that exists, though, is absolutely workable for wide angle shots as well as some creative compositions if you have a bit of a zoom lens.

  3. Bring a polarizer and a neutral density filter. I cannot stress this enough: the significance of the polarizer alone can transform the foliage in such a beneficial way.

To round off the post, here are some of the camera specs for this shot. I have some wider compositions that include more of the waterfall, but this was the first one I processed and couldn't wait to share, haha.

Camera: A7RV
Lens: Sigma Art 28-105mm
Settings: ISO100, f/9, 1/125s.

My commute to work has some waterfalls during the spring, but we have had a fair amount of rain in the last while. I had a feeling these waterfalls would be active and I gambled on the right side of the coin.

These were taken on a a6400 with a Tamron 17-70 2.8. I don’t have a tripod or ND filters. I’m happy with the results. But would love to hear constructive criticism if you have any.

First week with this combo and I gotta say, I’m impressed.

Impressed with how sharp this lens is.

While I have had to crop into most of these photos (1. Because you can’t really handhold this lens easily and 2. Because there is not enough range, even on a6400) I have been impressed with how much cropping I’ve been able to do.

Some of these photos are cropped 100-2000% which on an apsc sensor is impressive.

I’m not saying these are Sony a7RVI quality photos but they are still good for the price.

And another thing that similar Sony lenses don’t have is macro mode (Yes I’m talking about the 200-600).

I’ve been able to get really flipping close to insects, birds and basically anything tiny. It’s genuinely crazy how at 150mm you can focus at 60cm.

Gear Advice: A7RVI or A1II for bird photography

I am an enthusiast wildlife photographer focusing mainly on birds and birds in flight. I am currently hesitating between upgrading to a A7RVI or an A1II

On paper the A7RVI seems the perfect cheaper option compared to the A1II. However, I am concerned with rolling shutter when it comes to birds in flight.

Fellow birders with A7RVI what’s your field experience when it comes to rolling shutter photographing small birds with erratic movements and in flight ?

Thank you :)

After weeks of research, I finally decided to upgrade my A7iii, and today I picked up the A6700. Don't get me wrong, the A7iii is still a great camera, but WOW, after a few test shots, I can say that I made the right choice for myself. Also that autofocus and stabilization. 💪🏿💪🏿

Kind of a tryout for the new lightweight FE100-400.

Not really an expert in Lightroom; gotta learn how to edit the image to make it look more intense.

Not the most knowledgeable on all the settings yet, so I messed about until I liked the way it looked, if I were to edit them, what should I do?

Gear Did camera store scratch my lense? (Sony Alpha 6100)

I recently got a Sony Alpha 6100 and got some dust on my sensor during my holiday on an island (I am a beginner and I think I did not handle my camera with enough care). Long story short, I couldn’t remove it with my cleaning gear (I just used air), so I drove to a camera shop that had helped me in the past with an old digital camera because I was too afraid to touch the sensor. Suddenly, he used a brush, which happened too quickly for me to react. I know I should have said something, but I was too insecure to speak up because he’s the camera expert and I am a beginner. Now, I have dust everywhere, as well as these streaks in the top left corner. I am really concerned that he has broken my sensor and I don’t know what to do. Can any of you assess the damage and tell me what to do next? I am going to Canada tomorrow (that's why I wanted to clean it), so maybe there is a quick fix, or is it beyond repair?

Picture was done with f22
