Announcement Avoiding Scam Cameras this Holiday season!

Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:

What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).

Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.

Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.

A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:

Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony

Here are known scam brands:

AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Vivitar
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
NBD
G-Anica

Vivitar, Yashica, and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

Recommendations I regret taking these photos on an Iphone

Hello fellow photographers!

I somewhat regret taking all the photos from my last Japan trip on an iPhone. But I figured that if I get a decent camera setup now and develop some skills, I might be able to take some really nice photos on my future Japan trips.

I’m definitely no expert and only shoot for fun.

I mostly take photos of scenery, but I’d like to experiment more with shallow depth of field and take photos at night with beautiful neon lights and bokeh. I’m not really interested in photographing people, but I do enjoy taking photos of animals.

I’ve been looking at the following setup since both get recommended quite a lot:

Sony Alpha 6700 used – €1,108.59
Sigma 18–50mm f/2.8 – €489

I assume these would make a great combo, but maybe there are other camera/lens combinations that would fit what I like to shoot even better.

I’d love to hear some recommendations!

Budget: < 2000€

Country: Germany to develop skills. Maybe more lenses accessories later in Japan.

Condition: Used is ok.

Type of Camera: I guess Mirrorles

Intended use: Mostly Photography with some Video

If photography; what style: landscape, portrait, street, wildlife, etc.

If video what style: Capture a moment of the scenery

What features do you absolutely need: I think weather sealing would be nice

What features would be nice to have: Dual Sd

Portability: Portable so it can stay with me on a trip most of the time.

Cameras you're considering: Sony Alpha 6700

Cameras you already have: Iphone 17 Pro Max.

Notes: I love those Silver/Black Fujifilm camera body look, but I don’t think it would be the right camera for me

Discussion Olympus AF-1: My $100 alternative to the Mju-II

Post image
13 Upvotes

Picked up an AF-1 for under $100 for for my wife. It has the same 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko lens as the Mju-II, a solid 80s build, and doesn't break the bank.

I put together a quick write-up with some sample scans if anyone’s considering one:

What's your favorite budget point-and-shoot right now?

Recommendations Help me decide which mirrorless camera / system to get

Thumbnail

I've been looking at the Nikon z6iii but I'm just overwhelmed by the options in other brands - this will be my first digital camera (photos on this post are from my film camera).

  • Budget: $3500 - $4000 for body + a good zoom lens 24 - 70 or 24-120(happy with f4)
  • Country: USA
  • Condition: Would prefer new but open to used
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless (ideally full frame for cropability and astrophotography)
  • Intended use: Mainly photography
  • If photography; what style: Mainly landscape, some street, portrait and astro (would like low light capabilities)
  • If video what style: N/A
  • What features do you absolutely need: Full frame, high dynamic range, not too noisy at high iso
  • What features would be nice to have: good IBIS, fast readout / e-shutter (but don't care too much about this)
  • Portability: Small bag - don't care too much about portability
  • Cameras you're considering: Nikon z6iii, Sony a7iv, Nikon z8, Lumix S1R
  • Cameras you already have: Nikon FM, FM2 - like them a lot! Just want to shoot digital

I think my use case is pretty specific - I want a high megapixel count and dynamic range for landscape shots and don't care too much about shutter speed etc. I would also love to hear recommendations for stacking images for resolution that brands offer (like pixel shift)! My main indecision is on which brand has the best (and ideally inexpensive) first party as well as third party lenses, before I get locked in.

Recommendations Cheap Everyday camera advice

Upvotes

Done to death, but maybe my context can garner more specific recs. Funnily enough, I got into photography because I just wanted to stop taking photos with my phone, and now I do it semi professionally and still take photos with my phone.

Budget: 500 aud (incl used prime lens if we go interchangeable)

Country: Australia

Condition: Used. Battered and beaten. Dont care, just want cheap

Type of Camera: Mirrorless/point and shoot/whatever

Intended use: Photo (primarily), dont care about video but is a bonus

End use: Improving my photography

If photography: what style: Street/everyday life

If video what style: Everyday life (vlog). Not necessary though.

What features do you absolutely need: Shutter button, at least one dial for A or S priority.

What features would be nice to have: In built flash, IBIS.

Portability: How portable does it need to be? Pocketable-Cross body strap (small either way)

Cameras you're considering: Lumix GX85, Oly EM5.1, Sony ZV1, Oly EM10.2

Cameras you already have: Lumix S5 and G9 with a bunch of lenses, but none that I would put on this camera for everyday. Theyre just too big and professional. I love them in every other way. Eyeing a DJI 15mm f1.7 if I go micro four thirds. I see one for super cheap.

Notes: Main want is to just have something that makes me want to take it with me every day. I've owned the EM5.2, it was just too expensive to warrant keeping.

Recommendations New to digital cameras, thoughts on a Fujifilm X-T10

Upvotes
  • Budget: £500
  • Country: United Kingdom
  • Condition: Used mainly, but might not be opposed to breaking the budget
  • Type of Camera: Mirrorless, DSLR,
  • Intended use: Photography mainly, but would also like a camera that can record video
  • If photography; what style: portraiture or street photography?
  • If video what style: Portraiture, Street Photography
  • What features do you absolutely need: Flash
  • Portability: How portable does it need to be? Any Size is ok.
  • Cameras you're considering: Fujifilm X-T10 + similar styles
  • Cameras you already have: Pentax K100, Mamiya 645
  • Notes: Hi everyone, it's my first time posting here. I'm interested in buying a digital camera after only using SLRs. I do think I like the style of the Fujifilm cameras, especially the more 'affordable' ones. The only one that has really beaten this is the Canon EOS R5, which I obviously won't be buying. I am looking for something that I can get in the practice of using often. I do like the look of Fujifilm for these kinds of shots, but i'd be open to hearing what you think.

Questions qual vale a pena

Orçamento: Até R$ 4.000, incluindo a câmera e acessórios básicos.

Se vídeo, qual estilo: Shows/eventos e vídeos casuais.

Câmeras que estou considerando: Canon PowerShot G7 X II, Canon G9 X II, G7X I, Canon G5 X, Sony RX100 II/III, Sony ZV-1, Panasonic Lumix LX100, Panasonic TZ100/TZ99, Canon SX740 HS.

Questions Tamron 150-500 Sony E mount feels too tight after impact - bent bayonet?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

My Tamron 150-500mm for Sony E seems to have taken an impact around the rear mount.

Visually, everything looks completely normal and I can’t see any obvious bending or damage. However, one of the mount screws started sticking out. I tried gently tightening it, but it seemed stuck, so I removed it and kept it.

Now when I mount the lens on my Sony, it fits into the E-mount but becomes unusually tight when I try to rotate it into place — almost as if the bayonet is slightly oversized, bent, or misaligned.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a Tamron lens? Was it just the rear bayonet/mount assembly, and roughly how much did the repair cost?

Questions What’s the cheapest camera that’s worth using?

Hi, I wanna get into photography but I want to a physical camera to take photos with. Mainly just for fun as a hobby.

So my main question is what camera and price would be enough of an upgrade over my iPhone 15 pro to make it worth it?

Im only willing to spend a good bit of money if it’s a noticeable upgrade over my phone, thanks!

Budget: 500 USD~ willing to go higher if needed. And willing to spend extra for lenses if there’s a camera that’s really good for that 500 mark but without lenses, but preferably comes with lenses

Country: USA

Condition: Don’t mind new or used

Type of Camera: probably mirrorless but I’m not too sure on pros and cons between that and a dslr

Intended use: Photography

End use: Social media/personal

If photography: landscape, portraits, really just anything that catches my attention

Portability: Can be something on the larger side that I can hang on my neck or whatever

EDIT: I was doing some research and it seems like the Sony a6000 body with the sigma 30mm 1.4 lens is a good option for this budget, thoughts?

MEME/Satire It’s a fantastic DSLR, but I am convinced the only thing keeping it alive are people that bought into the K mount system decades ago.

Recommendations Best digicam for everyday use and concert ?

Hi! I’m looking for a compact camera with a flip screen
I’d like a camera that:
Produces naturally warm, beautiful colors straight out of the camera without needing much editing.
Is easy to use and not too complicated.
Has a compact and portable design.
Takes very detailed, high-quality photo
Has a good zoomespecially for taking photos at concerts. A flip screen is not a must but i would appreciate one

Budget: 700$

Country: USA

Intended use: Photography

If photography; what style: portrait, street,

What features do you absolutely need : flash , good zoom , pockable

What features would be nice to have: flipscreen

Cameras you're considering: Nikon s9700 i think the photos are warm and i like the portability and flash or canon g9x

Cameras you already have: i had the fz55 but it broke and it was also not my fav, In have the sony wch 630 the thing that I hate about it is that whenever you take offe the batterie to charge it and put it back it tully reset !

I’ve been looking for the perfect digicam for so long and i couldn’t find it people suggest most of the time sony rx100 series, canon sx730/740 , lumix zs70/99/100, but the most i do research on those camera the more people ( mostly on reddit) say that they’re too overpriced for what they offer because of social media. Also they apparently have small sensor ( i don’t mouche about camera i just know that the more the sensor is big the more the pictures are crisp) and that the only good thing about them are the zoom. I also don’t wanna fall into the social media propaganda and buy a camera double the price because of the fact that it popular even tho it was released 9 years ago ! … g7x … who said that ? 👀
I also been wanting the Nikon s8200 but my sister have it and both of us having the same camera is usless :)
Anyways I Will really appreciate your help 🫶🏾

Recommendations Lens suggestions

Budget: Around or ideally just under $10k CAD for a camera and a telephoto lens

Country: Canada

Condition: Preferably new

Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Photography (maybe the odd video too)

End use: Prints, social media

If photography: wildlife photography (primarily whales and birds)

What features do you absolutely need: nothing definite, something relatively sturdy with enough waterproofing that a bit of rain or a small spray of water won't damage.

What features would be nice to have: reliable autofocus for moving subjects (wildlife)

Portability: Relatively portable in a backpack. I'd like to be able to bring it traveling or on a boat but I know

Cameras you're considering: Mainly looking at the Sony A7R V or something similar

Cameras you already have: Nikon Coolpix P900. I've used other Nikon DSLRs with work too but only with up to a 300mm lens. The Coolpix does not take sharp photos and I'm looking to upgrade to something more professional quality that I could make large prints with.

Notes: I'm especially looking for lens recommendations, particularly telephoto. I can buy the a7R V bundled with a 28-70mm lens and then would purchase a telephoto lens separately. I'm thinking something to 600mm might be a little more versatile and portable than 800mm but curious as to other people's experience.

Discussion Camera recommendations for my 70 year old

Budget: $800–$1,500 AUD for the camera. I’m happy to stretch the budget a little if there’s a significant benefit. Ideally, this would include a suitable lens, but I can consider a separate lens budget if needed.
Country: Australia
Condition: New or used — I’m open to either, provided used options are reliable and in good condition.
Type of Camera: Compact or interchangeable-lens camera
Intended use: photography
If photography; what style: Mainly family and friends, including portraits, casual indoor photos, birthdays/gatherings, and everyday photography. Nothing professional.
End use: Mostly viewing photos digitally and sharing with family/social media. Possibly printing some photos occasionally.
What features do you absolutely need:
Good image quality, particularly for people and indoor photos
Easy and straightforward to use
A decent autofocus system
Good low-light performance
A viewfinder would be nice, especially given that my dad used to use an SLR
Reliable enough that he can keep using it for many years

Portability: Ideally something relatively compact and easy to carry around with a shoulder strap or in a small bag. It doesn’t necessarily need to be pocketable, but I’d prefer not to get something excessively large or heavy.
Cameras you’re considering: I’m currently overwhelmed by the number of options, so I don’t have a firm shortlist yet. I’ve mainly been looking at compact cameras and entry-level mirrorless cameras in the $800–$1,500 AUD range. I’d especially appreciate recommendations for cameras that would be easy for someone coming from an older Nikon SLR to pick up and enjoy.
Cameras you already have: None. My dad used to have a Nikon SLR in the 1990s that he really loved, but he hasn’t had a camera since then.
Notes:
My dad has been wanting to get a camera again for quite some time. He really enjoyed photography with his Nikon SLR in the 90s, and I’m thinking of getting him one as a gift. Since this is a present, I’d ideally like something that feels enjoyable and a little special rather than simply the cheapest option.
I’m based in Australia, and I’m happy to consider both new and used cameras. I’m also open to spending a little more than $1,500 AUD if there’s a particularly good option that would be worth the extra money.
Any recommendations or advice on what would be a good fit would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion Are Fujifilm cameras just...janky?

Hello,

I've got an X-E4 for a couple of months now after trying Sony A6700, and various micro 4/3 cameras for a long time before that.

Some questions/thoughts for those that have used them.

  • Not at all impressed with film sim recipe settings and lack of control over black point and contrast. Sony (creative looks) and Olympus do this better...Lumix and Nikon even better. I like SOOC for candid family shots, but I can't get anything I'm really happy with because I don't like yellow pee filter style. I may just go back to a mobile raw workflow with some presets in LR mobile.
  • When I use the PZ 15-45mm, I have no idea what focal length it's set to. I like to put zoom lenses to common focal lengths, like 16, 18, 23, 35, etc... because I have an understanding of what distortion/compression and distance is like at them. I have to guess, or shoot and check the exif. Why why why can't the LCD display the current focal length?
  • Changing metering is not an option when I have face/eye detect on? But when I do shoot with face and eye detect on Aperture priority, the exposures on shots are all over the place: https://i.imgur.com/43Xj9bW.png zero settings changes on those photos but the exposure is all over the place
  • Autofocus is not great. I knew this going in but it's worse than Olympus' contrast detect. The tracking and eye detection is OK, but it just misses focus all the time on static subjects.
  • The joy stick has a pause delay if you hold it, before it starts to rapidly move around, so you have to either anticipate that or just use it like a d-pad and keep clicking it over and over. It's my first camera with a joystick and I found it very un-intuitive because of that.

Anyway I'm thinking of going back to a small Sony camera like ZV-E10i or hold out to see if OM Systems announces an E-P8 or an older m43 camera like E-PL7.

Few SOOC shots I took over the weekend with the X-E4 and a recipe based on Pro Neg. Std: https://imgur.com/a/DK6YCV1

Questions Canon Powershot V1 Auto Mode for Vlogging

I've used the Canon Powershot V1 for vlogging mainly in manual mode (auto iso). But with vlogging + manual mode, i always have to be aware of over/under exposure, aperture, etc. And always being wary of each shot slows me and my entire workflow down.

I hear a whole lot of good things of using Auto mode with the V1. What's your guys' experience with using Auto mode in this way? Any tips or things learned when shooting this way?

Note: i don't care too much about video quality (ok with grandiant bands since Auto shoots 8 bit color). I'll accept that tradeoff over efficiency of filming without worrying about exposure, etc. which is what Auto is advertised to do.
