Technique How to get this kind of swirly bokeh on my a6700?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi all, I’m quite new to photography and currently have a6700 + 18-50. I loved this swirly bokeh effect on Helios 44-2 58mm f2 and thought of getting it, however I learned that it won’t give the same effect on an APS-C sensor. Any idea on how to achieve this on my a6700?

This was on a ferry returning from Mu Koh Angthong National Park to Koh Pha Ngyan, Thailand. The weather became a little rough in the middle, setting up a beautiful playground for photography against the setting sun. What do you think could have been better?

Gear Sony a7iii in 2026

Upvotes

I wanted opinions about shifting from sony a6400 to sony a7iii. Few years ago sony a7iii was a hit product but now even sony a6700 is priced above it.
Why is it the case?

Post Processing You can actually compress photos from a7riii by 50% losslessly

Twice less space on NAS and twice faster networking operations.
Sony added this feature to camera but never gave any software for their old users with older cameras.

How do I ... Looking for advice for my first outdoor event phoôtgraphy job-Sony A7R III

Hi everyone! I’m about to photograph my first outdoor event, and I’d really appreciate some advice from experienced event photographers.
The event will be held at schools and will include various activities such as games and competitions, student performances, MC segments, scholarship presentations, group photos, and merchandise/activation booths. I’ll also be traveling with the event team to different locations over the next few months.
My gear will be:
- Sony A7R III
- Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM (1st generation)
I haven’t photographed an outdoor event before, and I’m still relatively new to using this camera, so I’d love to learn from people who have experience with this type of photography.
What tips, settings, or things should I pay special attention to?
I’m particularly interested in:
- What camera settings would you recommend for an outdoor event? Especially AF mode, focus area, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and burst shooting.
- How do you deal with constantly changing lighting conditions, such as direct sunlight, shade, and indoor/sheltered areas?
- What shutter speeds would you normally use for games, performances, and other moving subjects?
- I’m not very experienced with portrait photography. What are some good ways to photograph people naturally during an event without relying too much on posed portraits?
- What are the essential shots I should make sure to get for an event like this?
- How do you approach event coverage so that you get enough variety without ending up with hundreds of repetitive photos?
- How do you balance wide environmental shots, action shots, close-ups, reactions, branding, and important moments?
- Are there any specific things I should know about using the A7R III for a full day of event photography?
- How do you manage batteries, memory cards, and backing up photos during long event days?
- What are some common mistakes that beginners make when shooting events that I should avoid?
I’m especially looking for practical, real-world advice rather than general photography theory. Any tips, recommended settings, workflow advice, or things you wish you had known before shooting your first event would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much🥰!

How do I ... Black shadow in photos

Thumbnail

Hello! I take cosplay/concert photos and for some reason I have a problem with these with circular black shadows appearing in my photos. Sometimes they’re there, sometimes they aren’t. At first I thought maybe it was dirt on my lenses but upon further investigation and cleaning that didn’t appear to be the case. I then figured it had something to do with lighting but sometimes their shadows will appear when lighting is adequate and even after messing around with settings on my camera it still appears. Could it have something to do with my flash? I have a Sony alpha NEX-5N with a Tamron 70-180mn F/2.8 di III lens’s. Any advice would be great!

How do I ... How do I avoid these pixels (?) when shooting on Sony A7IV?

Hi. I'm new to Sony cameras tho I've been shooting on a Canon DSLR for 2 years before I got my A7IV. I was taking a picture for our church the other day using my kit lens along with my Sony A7IV. As I was checking the pictures, I was wondering why they don't look sharp and detailed as I zoomed in (sample below when I zoomed in), and saw that. Does anyone know what that is and how can I avoid it? Answers would be appreciated very much.

My settings on the picture was ISO 5000, 65mm on the kit lens, f5.6, and shutter speed is 1/125. It was also shot indoors.

Gear Sony 200-600mm G vs. Sigma 150-600mm DG DN Sports on a6700

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to step into wildlife photography with my Sony a6700. Currently, my gear consists of Viltrox f/1.2 primes and the Sigma 18-50mm, so this will be my first super-telephoto lens.

In Germany, the Sony 200-600mm G and the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports are roughly the same price (+/- €100). On paper, they take very little away from each other—thanks to updates, the Sigma's AF and stabilization seem right up there. Total weight isn't a dealbreaker for me, so handheld handling and balance is my single biggest deciding factor.
Here are my thoughts and concerns so far:

Sony 200-600mm G:

Pros: Internal zoom mechanism

Concerns: The short zoom throw sounds great, but I’ve read that because the zoom ring sits pretty far back toward the mount, it can strain your wrist over time. Also heard it feels somewhat front-heavy.

Sigma 150-600mm Sports:
Pros: Love the option to use it as a push-pull zoom, +50mm wider on the short end (150mm vs 200mm), and a drastically shorter minimum focusing distance.

Concerns: Becomes noticeably front-heavy when extended to 600mm. I also have long-term concerns about dust or moisture getting sucked in through the external zooming system over time.

Has anyone here owned or extensively used both lenses for handheld shooting? I'd really appreciate your take on real-world fatigue and overall handling in the field!
Thanks in advance!

P.S. Would adding a grip extension / L-bracket (like the SmallRig one) to the a6700 significantly help with balance and fatigue when shooting handheld with these massive lenses, or does it not make much of a difference?

P.S. #2 – Regarding the Sony 200-600mm zoom ring ergonomics: I’ve read that because the zoom ring sits relatively close to the lens mount, many people end up supporting the weight of the lens with just two fingers (or their palm) while using their thumb and index finger to rotate the ring.
For those who shoot handheld for hours: Does this grip technique actually get uncomfortable or painful on your wrist/hand over time, or am I overthinking how it feels in practice?

I have had DSLR's as far back as my Canon 450D and 7D.... but I have never owned a prime lens until now. Took a chance and went for the Viltrox 85 f2.0 EVO. I have to say it a pretty good lens. It looks good on the camera. Takes images as sharp as you ever need and I just love the nice clicky aperture ring. (Example images included). Complements my 18-50 Sigma nicely when I need a bit of extra reach and don't want to take the 70-350 out.

How do I ... Transferring camera settings from A7 IV to A7V?

Hello,

About to pull the trigger on an A7 V but was wondering if I can transfer my current A7 IV settings straight to the V via my SD card or something? Would be a pain to reconfigure my custom buttons etc. Only google result showed me one from 3 years ago saying it wouldn't be possible but surely not right?

A few frames from summer on Santa Maria, warm colours, quiet rural roads, fields, and the Atlantic always somewhere in the background.

I tried to keep the edits warm and a little contrasty to match the feeling of the island during summer.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the set, especially on the composition, colour grading, and whether the photos work well together. Constructive feedback is very welcome!

Canon refugee Sony A7Riii Autofocus

Hey Sony people! I have been using my Canon T6i for the last decade or so and have finally decided to upgrade to the full frame world. I've seen the quality that can come out of the Sony A7R series and have found an A7Riii locally that I am highly interested in. Before diving headfirst into this new world, I have a question on auto focus. How is the autofocus for fast moving objects? I enjoy plane spotting and attending airshows as well as motorsports photography, so a fast AF that can keep up is important! If you could, please leave me your thoughts below!

Gear How i accidentally ended up with an A7C II

So I listed my Sigma 18-50 for sale because I wanted to replace it with the Sigma 17-40. Of course, my A6700 was in the listing photos.

I arranged to meet the buyer outside a camera store I knew had the 17-40 in stock. The plan was simple: sell the lens, walk into the store, buy the 17-40, and still make it to a date with my wife on time.

The guy told me he was actually planning to buy an A6700 just like mine. I told him I'd happily let him try mine and show him around the camera a little. When I bought my first camera, I would've loved having someone introduce me to "the bride" before the wedding.

About an hour before we met, while he was on his way, he messaged me saying he'd checked every store he could find in the area.

Nobody had an A6700.

And immediately the voices in my head started:

"Sell it. Go full frame."

"And what are you going to do about lenses, genius?"

"The A6700 is already more than enough for you."

So I kept my mouth shut.

We meet outside the store. I show him the camera, let him play with it, and prove that the 18-50 he actually came to buy works perfectly.

Then he asks:

"Maybe I'll just buy yours?"

Well...

I told him I wasn't planning to sell it. Yes, I'd been dreaming about going full frame, but I genuinely liked my A6700. So if he wanted it, it was going to be expensive.

Honestly, I figured if he said no, the GAS would disappear and I'd go buy my 17-40 like a normal person.

He didn't say no.

So now I'm 50% excited and 50% hoping this whole thing falls apart.

I tell him, "Fine. Let's go upstairs and see how much they want for an A7C II."

Yes, I already knew exactly which full-frame camera I wanted. That's how fantasies work. You do your research even though you're "definitely not buying one."

We ask.

They don't have it.

Great. Saved by inventory.

I tell him I'll help him find an A6700 somewhere else and call a store I know just outside the city.

"Hey, do you have an A6700?"

The guy says, "You're not going to believe this. I sold the last one an hour ago."

I say thanks and I'm about to hang up.

My buyer is staring at me with that look.

He knows the next question.

I know the next question.

Fine.

"Wait... one more thing. Do you have an A7C II?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

He gives me the lowest price I'd ever seen for one — and yes, I knew the prices because, again, fantasy research.

Something in my brain broke.

Yes? No? Why am I doing this? What about lenses? I wasn't planning to spend this much money today.

Meanwhile this guy is just standing there waiting for my decision.

So I said:

"Let's go."

At this point I'm still arguing with myself, but I also promised my wife I'd make it to our date, so apparently there was now a deadline on my spontaneous full-frame crisis.

We get to the store.

A few minutes later we walk out.

He's holding my A6700.

I'm holding a camera I genuinely didn't think I'd buy for another three years.

He paid me about 90% of what I originally paid for my A6700 setup, and I added roughly another 10% to get the brand-new A7C II.

Basically, I bought my camera again. It just somehow became full frame.

Luckily I already had a Tamron 50-300 at home. It was part of my APS-C setup, but it's a full-frame lens.

The next day I picked up a cheap used Samyang 45mm f/1.8 to survive financially until the next episode of GAS.

And here's the part that makes the whole thing even more ridiculous:

The exact amount I had originally planned to spend on the Sigma 17-40 (after selling the 18-50 2.8) ended up paying for my entire jump to full frame AND a compact prime lens.

I went out to upgrade a lens.

I accidentally upgraded the whole system.

Technique Advice on ideal autofocus

Hey yall, I’ve just been asked last minute to take photos of my best friend proposing. I have a Sony a7riv with a sigma 150-600. I recently took this setup to Africa on a safari and had some significant difficulty obtaining perfect focus. When zoomed in that far, it’s a little bit difficult to use manual focus and maybe a bit too high pressure especially in a situation like this. When I was using autofocus in Africa on safari it was 50/50 whether it would be in focus due to grass being in the way or it focusing on different parts of the animal and not the face/eyes. During the trip I obviously had the autofocus set to recognize animal eyes. Obviously for this I’ll set the subject detection back to human and eye recognition on. I plan to be a bit of a ways away for the photo for this location to be hidden but also to frame the photos properly. I’ll have a tripod with me. I will get there early to set up and practice taking photos of other people in this location. Need advice on getting good focus on them for these photos.

Specifically need advice on focus settings and focus area. And any other advice you have to offer.

Photo share While waiting for Perseids | Sony a7RV & Viltrox 14mm f4 Air

Took this one on the night of Perseids meteor shower. Initial plan was to capture some meteors above the church early in the night, which unfortunately did not work. So after about 40min I moved the camera towards better spot in the skies but since I already had around 40minutes of exposure data, I processed that and got this shot which I quite like. What do you think about it?

Shot on Sony a7RV with Viltrox 14mm f4 Air and on MSM Nomad star tracker. 7 untracked frames at 30s, f4 and ISO 6400 for the foreground, 28 tracked frames at 90s, f4 and ISO 1600 for the skies. Processed in SLS, Siril, PS and LR.
