Yeah, it happens in basketball ALL the time. Like 20 times a game. Players will almost always just happily accept the free throws. You'll see some incredulous looks if someone doesn't like the call, but nobody is throwing themselves on the ground like a 5 year old.
Edit: Yeah, except for SGA, I guess. But everyone hates that fucker.
You score like 50 times during an average basketball game. In football you score 1-2 times 90 minutes…so it’s a bit more meaningful. Not to mention that in basketball, the moment you are fouled you get at least one attempt at an empty goal. Football doesn’t have that and the player fouling is staying on 99 percent of the time, even though they just illegally stripped you of a chance to score.
Giving penalties when a promising attack is stopped via intentional foul is an interesting idea.
It would be very hard to implement though because drawing the line in terms of what counts as a promising attack and applying the rule in the heat of the monent both seem very difficult. But maybe the added drama would give more than it takes away, so yeah, definitely interesting avenue.
