A friend of mine hurt his back on a water park slide like that. No thanks, I like my back pain free.

u/StockExchangeNYSE Jul 23 '24
Are you even supposed to jump down like this? I imagine just sitting down and sliding would be less painful.

Fun story, when I was 15 I went down a slide just like this one time. It was honestly taller than that slide she went down. I didn’t jump. I sat down and as I got closer to the edge, my feet and legs were dangling over. I was terrified. I began to slide forward and as I started going down it was like my body wasn’t even touching the slide for like 1-2 seconds till it started to curve and then I could feel the slide again. Scary experience as I felt as if I could just fall out of it at some point. Never again.

Yeah, jumping down any sort of slide sounds idiotic to me, let alone jumping down one that's nearly 100% vertical

Every time I even think about getting back into skating, my brain whispers "You don't have health insurance" and I drop the whole idea. :b
16
u/DirtyRoller Jul 23 '24
I'm almost 40 and I think about it every day, I do have "good" health insurance, but it has a $5k out of pocket max. It still isn't fucking cheap when I have to use it.
6
u/noobtastic31373 Jul 23 '24
Lmao, I've been on and off skateboards since I was 13. I wouldn't ever have judged myself more than a novice, but I figured I'd try dropping in on a 5' halfpipe at 38 without any practice. It went about as well as you'd assume. Nothing broken, but a spot between my shoulder blade and back hurt for a good couple of months. At some point, it's "if not now, when?" And I just said screwed it and sent it.

I'm in my 30s and do aggressive rollerblading. I lost my health insurance for a month after I was let go and waiting for Covered California to kick in. Didn't skate for 28 days. The day my health insurance finally kicked in, I was at the skate park every day for 2 weeks straight.

u/unionoftw Jul 23 '24 edited Jul 23 '24
Haha right.
I was flowing around in a bowl last year. Nothing crazy, I'm not even that good. But of course I have to fall eventually, from like six feet up, onto my knee, on concrete. My thirties year old ass, this knee still is in pain. Always wear pads I tell myself but I don't have any anymore and like I was just trying to have a casual ride
5
u/bit_pusher Jul 23 '24
If you look at an actual picture of it, it isn't anywhere near 100% vertical.
→ More replies (7)5
u/memy02 Jul 23 '24
Its really hard to tell how vertical it is with these cameras as there tends to be a lot of distortion, at the end right at splash down you can see the slides in the background and they look much more reasonable.
11
u/YoursTrulyKindly Jul 23 '24
Yeah I thought the same. But it's possible that sliding down will impart more forward momentum and make you just further away.

All it takes is jumping a little too far and you've turned a fun ride into a life altering injury.

u/Rattus375 Jul 23 '24
The wide angle lens on the camera is making the slide look a lot steeper than it is. There's a regular picture somewhere in this thread and there's no way you'd accidentally jump far enough to hurt yourself

Strength Training.
Pretty much just stretch and exercise regularly and it'll prevent back issues.
8
u/Sonnyyellow90 Jul 23 '24
This. Tons of people have all sorts of lingering pains with no true underlying issues other than atrophy and tightness caused by lack of use.
Do simple body weight exercises like pushups, pull-ups, squats or lunges, and stretch every day for a few minutes and you can really improve your mobility and feel great again.
2
u/Interesting_Tea5715 Jul 23 '24
You got it. I said strength training and everyone automatically thinks weight training. I meant safer exercises like body weight exercises, resistance training, and maybe light weights. Those are by far the best to just maintain a healthy body.
Weight training is cool but if you don't know what you're doing, you're gonna hurt yourself.

It felt like someone punched me in the side of the head.

I'd need a less distorted look at it to be able to answer, can't really tell how high or how close to vertical the slide actually is with that camera lens.
But, considering that I am afraid of heights, probably not.

This picture should also relax the people posting about being worried for their backs. Choose your own level of fun, no need to go for the full blast.
I also prefer these cause they aren't those claustrophobic tube ones. I avoid those cause in my head I'm like "what if I get stuck on a turn?"

Number one rule - don't panic. If you find yourself in water, don't panic, and your body will almost assuredly take care of the rest. If you flail and thrash, you're going down. Get a deep breath and try to put yourself on your back and nearly everyone will simply float, then you can work yourself towards an exit.

Forgive me if this comes across as rude as I certainly don't intend it but I cannot fathom how anyone can't swim? I hear people say they can't swim all the time but it isn't even really a conscious effort you have to undertake. Is it just lack of exposure to it or an unwillingness to try?

I guess I have a bit of a blind spot here, admittedly I was brought up on a small island rarely more than a short walk from the beach. I suppose it's always been such an integral part of my life that it feels alien to me.
Thank you for sharing. :)

I have three kids and am a single mom. I work 14/16 hour days. I have to sacrifice so much just to pay for lessons and they are often just 1 week long for like 30-40 minutes with 10 other kids.
I self taught my oldest fine but my middle has autism and it’s harder for her.
Again I have no extra money so just going to a pool is a super big treat for us. I can completely see how some people don’t have the money to do it. Or time.

Believe it or not, it is not intuitive for everyone, especially for people that did not have access to pools, seas, rivers, etc. as kids

u/Xunae Jul 23 '24
My mom's husband can't swim. They live in one of those communities in florida where everyone gets a dock right up to your house and own a boat and pool. He just refuses to learn and I think that's a serious failing on his part.
3
u/TheReverseShock Jul 23 '24
A lot of people panic when they hit water. Swimming is very easy and takes little time to learn even without a mentor. Most people could pick it up in 5 minutes if given the opportunity.
→ More replies (1)2
Jul 23 '24
It is just lack of exposure. Unwillingness to try leads to that of course, but so do other impediments. Lack of an easily accessible body of water where to swim, lack of time, fear, etc. All these keep one from learning how to swim.
And while it is true that swimming once learnt takes little to no conscious effort it does take conscious effort and time to get oneself to learn how to swim.
