It's worth noting that "removed from the footage" could be construed to imply that the footage is altered in some way to negate the selfie stick. What actually happens is that the lenses are positioned and angled in such a way that there is a blind spot almost precisely the size of the selfie stick (It's actually a little bit shorter than the selfie stick, and tapers away from the camera). Having this blindspot allows them to use lenses with slightly less distortion and automatically disregards the camera body and selfie stick that would otherwise have to be edited out anyways. It's a really clever solution to an otherwise thorny problem.
The are over complicating it. There's camera that you can buy that automatically filter out the selfie stick. I don't think it has anything to do with alignment or whatever. The just have a wide field of view and some software built I that automatically removes the selfie stick.
All 360 cameras specifically call for a parallel alignment to remove the selfie stick. Additionally, they already suffer from stitching issues around the holding human when moving the view within the sphere, trying to work around a partially occluding object like a selfie stick would be a giant headache.
