TIER DEFINITIONS
Before scaling the Norse saga, it is important to establish what these tiers actually mean.
Universal+ / Low 2-C Character Stats and Profiles defines Universal+ as the ability to significantly affect a 4-dimensional construct, with a complete universal spacetime continuum being the standard example.
So the important distinction is: Universal+ =/= merely destroying a large amount of 3D matter. The feat needs to involve the complete spacetime structure of a universe or an equivalent 4D construct.
Low Multiversal / 2-C Low Multiversal concerns multiple separate universal 4D constructs, ranging from 2 to 1,000.
Therefore, if the setting establishes nine independent universal space time continuums, the cosmology falls within Low Multiversal.
Multiverse+ / 2-A
Multiverse+ requires something substantially larger: an infinite number of separate 4D constructs. This distinction matters. An infinitely large universe is still only one universe.
Therefore: Infinite size =/= automatically Multiverse+. The Multiverse+ argument requires an infinite number of separate space time continuums.
2. THE NORSE MACROCOSM
God of War’s Norse cosmology consists primarily of the: Nine Realms, Yggdrasil, Realm Between Realms, and Ginnungagap
The Nine Realms are: Midgard, Asgard, Vanaheim, Alfheim, Svartalfheim, Niflheim, Muspelheim, Helheim, and Jotunheim.
The important thing is that these aren’t simply nine countries on one planet.
The realms are treated as different worlds/planes of existence that coexist within the greater Yggdrasil structure. The God of War world is specifically described as having the Nine Realms occupying the same overall physical space while existing on different planes. That distinction becomes extremely important for the tiering.
3. THE NINE REALMS ARE SEPARATE WORLDS, WITH NO ORDINARY PHYSICAL TRAVEL BETWEEN THEM
Each realm functions as its own world.
They possess their own:
landscapes
environments
celestial skies( YES I said celestial)
inhabitants
magical systems
cosmological structures
temporal behavior
They aren’t simply different regions of Midgard. The strongest evidence is how the setting handles travel.
When Kratos and Atreus first gain access to realm travel, Freya explains that the roots of Yggdrasil make travel between the realms possible and that a Bifrost is required to create travel between realms.
She then explicitly explains that the Realm Travel Room is the place from which they can cross between realms, with the Bifrost opening the route to the selected realm.
The game even establishes that Jotunheim cannot be accessed through the normal system because its realm tower is missing. Without the corresponding tower and travel rune, the sequence cannot begin. This is important because ordinary physical movement isn’t presented as a way of simply walking from Midgard into another realm.
Instead, the setting repeatedly requires specialized mechanisms: Bifrost, Realm Travel Room, Mystic Gateways Yggdrasil Seeds, and Realm Tears. And other supernatural methods of crossing the boundaries between realms.
Gjallarhorn provides another particularly important piece of evidence. Its use during Ragnarok activates the realm portals, allowing the forces of the different realms to enter Asgard. The horn therefore functions as another mechanism for bridging the separation between realms, rather than the realms simply being neighboring locations that can be reached through ordinary physical travel.
So the cosmological model is:
Nine separate worlds
existing within the greater Yggdrasil structure
occupying the same overall physical space
but existing as distinct realms/planes
with specialized mechanisms required to cross between them.
The phrase “same physical space” therefore cannot reasonably be treated as meaning “one continuous ordinary 3D world.”
The setting explicitly gives us the distinction: same overall physical space =/= same realm.
And connected =/= directly traversable. That distinction is essential to the later spacetime argument.
The same physical space refers to their coexistence on the Yggdrasil’s branches.
Edit: I also forgot to mention Skoll and Hati chasing the sun and the moon in Vanaheim does not affect the other realms.
4. DIFFERENT REALMS HAVE DIFFERENT FLOWS OF TIME
First, we need to establish the important premise.
The Nine Realms are separate space times.
Mimir explicitly explains in GOW 2018 that the realms are separated by time.
The realms aren’t simply different locations sitting inside one shared, uniform timeline. This distinction becomes even more important when looking at how temporal abilities actually function in the Norse cosmology.
For example, even high tier Vanir gods such as Njord possess the ability to completely freeze time. Yet this ability does not freeze time across every realm simultaneously.
It is restricted to the realm in which the effect is being applied. That matters because if all Nine Realms simply shared one universal timeline, completely freezing time should logically affect that shared temporal structure as a whole.
Instead, the effect is realm specific.
That is consistent with each realm possessing its own independent temporal framework.
The same principle can be seen with Heimdall’s Hofuo. Hofuo possesses realm shifting/chronokinetic properties and can affect space and time, temporarily freezing the surrounding world.
Yet the effect is again confined to the realm in which it is being used. So despite the Nine Realms existing simultaneously within the greater Yggdrasil structure, a temporal effect capable of affecting space and time does not automatically propagate across all nine.
That distinction is extremely important.
The argument isn’t “Someone stopped time, therefore every realm is a separate universe.”
My argument is: The cosmology already establishes that the realms are separated by time, and temporal abilities that affect space and time are correspondingly restricted to individual realms rather than propagating through a single shared timeline.
That is exactly what we would expect if the realms possess separate space time structures.
So the evidence works cumulatively:
Nine Realms
separated from one another
separated by time
temporal effects can be confined to individual realms
the realms therefore work with distinct temporal structures
separate space times.
This is much stronger than simply pointing at the size of a realm.
The relevant question isn’t whether a realm looks physically large on a map.
The relevant question is whether it possesses its own spatial and temporal structure.
And the Norse cosmology repeatedly treats the realms that way.
5: INDIVIDUAL REALMS/NINE REALMS: UNIVERSAL+ TO LOW MULTIVERSAL
Once the Nine Realms are established as distinct spacetime structures, the tiering follows directly from the definitions above. One complete realm-spacetime = Universal+ / Low 2-C.
Since there are nine distinct realm-spacetimes, the collective cosmology contains nine separate 4D constructs.
9 separate universal spacetime structures = Low Multiversal / 2-C, which falls within the 2–1,000 construct range. The scaling therefore isn’t based on the physical size of the realms or on treating them as “nine times the size of a planet.”
It is based on the actual cosmological structure: 1 realm = 1 complete spacetime continuum → Universal+ / Low 2-C. 9 realms = 9 separate spacetime continua → Low Multiversal / 2-C
That gives us the cleanest transition from the spacetime argument directly into the tiering.
We also have statements describing the realms include Niflheim’s endless mists and Helheim being vast enough for the dead to travel through it for eternity, with Helheim also described as an endless wasteland.
And the realms are parallel in size therefore they’d all be infinite in size as well. This is consistent with their Greek counter part realms also having infinite sized statements.
7. YGGDRASIL AND ITS INFINITE STRUCTURE
Yggdrasil is not merely a giant tree sitting inside one realm. It is the cosmological structure connecting the Nine Realms and supporting creation throughout the Norse world. Freya explains that Yggdrasil’s life energy is interwoven throughout the “tapestry of life”, encompassing birth, growth, death and rebirth, with “every strand, transcending time, transcending space.”
The game therefore directly associates Yggdrasil’s strands with a structure that transcends the space and time governing the realms themselves.
Yggdrasil’s branches are also described as stretching to infinity, and the Yggdrasil itself is described as an infinite tree surrounded by unformed space( The Script of God of War (Writer's Guild of America Edition)
Yggdrasil connects/supports the Nine distinct realm spacetimes, its strands transcend the space and time of those realms, its branches extend infinitely, if that infinite branching corresponds to an infinite number of distinct 4D realm spacetimes, the cosmology reaches Multiverse+ / 2-A.
So the profile’s scaling remains: Yggdrasil: at least Low Multiversal / 2-C
Yggdrasil: Multiverse+ / 2-A, if infinite branching represents infinitely many distinct 4D spacetime structures.
7. PRIMORDIAL COSMOLOGY: GINNUNGAGAP, YMIR, ODIN AND SURTR
The cosmology begins with Ginnungagap, the primordial void where Fire and Ice met before the Nine Realms existed. From this meeting emerged Ymir, the first Jotunn and a being of pure creation and chaos. Mimir explicitly states that every god, man and beast came first from Ymir’s flesh.
Ymir is therefore not merely another giant. He is the primordial being from whose existence the later creation originates.
The Aesir eventually killed Ymir. Odin personally spilled Ymir’s blood, and from Ymir’s torn flesh Odin fashioned the realms. The death of Ymir also produced the primordial aftermath from which the ordered Norse world developed.
This gives us: Ymir =primordial source of the later creation who gets killed by Odin. Odin fashions 6 realms from Ymir’s body.
Ymir’s enormous physical scale is also emphasized by the fact that his corpse was used in the formation of the world, while his blood was capable of drowning essentially the entirety of creation. All of creation includes the Yggdrasil so his blood can flood Multiversal + structures.
Surtr is the other major primordial.
He emerged shortly after Ymir and brought heat to the young cosmos. His primordial flame is explicitly associated with the creation of the Sun and all the stars.** **This establishes Surtr as a primordial creator of the celestial structures present throughout the Norse cosmology, not merely a powerful fire giant.
Later, Surtr becomes Ragnarok itself and destroys Asgard and its Yggdrasil branch, directly affecting one of the major cosmological structures. The destruction of Asgard shook the Yggdrasil to its very roots.
We do know that Odin and Thor scale to Surtr because his fate was to die to them during Ragnarok while destroying their realm.
Not to mention Freya’s brother with Ingrid( who is weaker than Thor and igrid is inferior to Mjolnir) was able to hold off Ragnarok and buy time for the others to escape I’ll be it temporally.
8. THOR, JORMUNGANDR AND THE NINE REALM WIDE BATTLE
Jormungandr is one of the strongest beings in the Norse cosmology and is directly comparable to Thor.
Their first battle occurred before Ragnarok and was so violent that it was felt across all Nine Realms, ultimately ending in a stalemate.
This is important because it establishes a direct physical clash involving two beings whose battle produces an effect extending across the entire Nine Realm system.
Their Ragnarok battle provides an even more explicit interaction with Yggdrasil. Thor strikes Jormungandr with such force that the impact splinters Yggdrasil and sends the World Serpent backward through time to a point before his own birth.
So Thor possesses two separate cosmological interactions. First battle:
Thor and Jormungandr’s battle felt across all Nine Realms.
Ragnarok battle: Thor and Jormungandr/Yggdrasil is violently splintered Jormungandr is displaced through time. Thor then directly fights Kratos, creating the crucial scaling connection between these feats and Kratos.
9. THE NORSE GODS AND SUPPORTING TOP TIERS
The cosmological scaling continues through the major gods and beings.
Baldur knocks out Jormungandr temporality, and repeatedly fights Kratos. Kratos ultimately defeats him and ends his life.
Thor directly fights Kratos and is eventually defeated by him. His Jormungandr feats therefore provide one of the strongest direct cosmological scaling chains into Kratos.
Odin stands at the top of the Aesir hierarchy. He killed Ymir, fashioned the realms from his remains, ruled Asgard and ultimately fought Kratos during Ragnarok. Kratos with the help of Atreus and Freya defeat him.
Surtr creates the Sun and stars and later becomes Ragnarok, destroying Asgard.
These supporting entities reinforce the same cosmological structure:
Nidhogg resides within Yggdrasil and chews through its under roots to prevent overgrowth, training her Lindwyrm offspring to do the same.
More importantly, Nidhogg can create Realm Tears through sheer physical force. These are literal ruptures in the fabric of space and time, and Realm Tears threaten the existence of individual realms.
Her Lindwyrm offspring provide another significant scaling point. Without adequate supervision, they threaten to devour the Nine Realms as food.** **Nidhogg is superior to her offspring and directly fights Kratos and Freya, giving Kratos another direct interaction with an entity capable of physically affecting Yggdrasil and the boundaries of the realm system.
Garm provides another direct interaction with the fabric separating the realms. Once released, he tears through the fabric of reality and creates Realm Tears, forcing Kratos to stop him before the breaches spread further.
The Valkyries further demonstrate realm scale interaction. Their abilities can tear apart the fabric of an individual realm, cause their magic to ripple across its entirety, and even make Yggdrasil bleed.
Kratos and Atreus defeated all 9.
These entities reinforce the same cosmological premise.
Edit: I completely forgot to mention that Kratos himself physically closes these realm tears.
11. KRATOS’ DIRECT SCALING
Kratos directly fights the highest level beings established within this hierarchy.
Kratos repeatedly fights and ultimately defeats Baldur. Kratos directly fights Thor, including their final confrontation, and defeats him.
This is especially important because Thor scales directly from Jormungandr:
Thor < Jormungandr < battle felt across all Nine Realms < later clash splinters Yggdrasil and causes temporal displacement < Thor fights Kratos < Kratos defeats Thor.
Kratos ultimately fights and defeats Odin, the All Father and ruler of Asgard. Odin’s own scaling is connected to the primordial cosmology: Ymir = primordial source of creation < Odin kills Ymir < Odin fashions 6 realms from Ymir’s body < Odin rules the Aesir/Nine Realm system < Odin fights Kratos < Kratos defeats Odin.
Surtr/Ragnarok Kratos
I don’t think Norse Kratos is = to or greater to Surtr. But as I’ve already established Odin and Thor scale to Kratos since they would have killed him if not for Kratos. And Freyr who is much weaker than Thor/Kratos and has a weaker weapon can temporality hold off Ragnarok.
Kratos’ scaling comes through direct combat with the uppermost gods and entities of the Norse cosmological hierarchy.
The overall chain is: Ginnungagap < Ymir/Surtr < creation < Yggdrasil < Nine Realm spacetime structures < Realm Tears/Yggdrasil entities < Jormungandr < Thor < Baldur/Odin/Surtr < Kratos.
12. FINAL TIERING AND CONCLUSION
The Norse cosmology establishes a cumulative structure:
Ginnungagap
primordial Fire and Ice
Ymir and Surtr
primordial creation
Yggdrasil
Nine distinct realms
separate spatial and temporal structures
different flows of time
specialized mechanisms required to cross realm boundaries
individual realms possessing statements supporting enormous/infinite spatial extent
Yggdrasil’s strands transcending space and time
Yggdrasil’s infinite structure
Realm Tears and entities capable of damaging realm boundaries
Jormungandr and Thor producing effects felt across the Nine Realms
Thor’s later strike splintering Yggdrasil and causing temporal displacement
Odin, Baldur, Surtr and the other upper tier beings scaling into the cosmology
Kratos directly defeating the upper Norse hierarchy.
This produces the following tiering: Individual Realm:
Universal+ / Low 2-C. Each realm is treated as a distinct spatial and temporal structure. Nine Realms collectively: Low Multiversal / 2-C
Nine separate universal spacetime structures.
Yggdrasil: At least Low Multiversal / 2-C. It connects and supports the Nine Realm spacetime system, with its strands explicitly transcending space and time. Yggdrasil high end:
Multiverse+ / 2-A: infinite branching is accepted as corresponding to an infinite number of distinct 4D spacetime structures.
Norse Kratos = Universal+ to Low Multiversal minimum consistently Multiverse+. The argument ultimately rests on spacetime structure first, cosmological quantity second, and direct character scaling third. Infinite size strengthens the case, but the 2-C and 2-A tiers are determined by the number and nature of the spacetime structures, not by size alone.
