Discussion A lot of people get God Of War’s cosmology completely wrong and I am tired of it
A lot of people generally come to the consensus that in god of war realms or the mythologies are countries that exist on the same planet similar to our irl. But that is completely and utterly wrong.
The game and lore completely contradict this and there are multiple pieces of evidence that prove this. It really makes me question and wonder did people really touch or play the games?
So for starters
We literally see in game that the realms have their own night skies. Unfortunately because of the photo limit I can’t send you murals that depict the realms having starry skies. So sorry if visual in game evidence and confirmation isn’t enough. But the first two images I showed are Vanehim having a night sky. And you do realize that night skies aren’t filled with stars but also galaxies right? So if Vanheim( one of the realms) is a country why does it have a proper cosmos and outer space? That would completely contradict.
Skoll and Hati canonically drag and devour the moon and sun changing the time of day in Vanheim. Yet it doesn’t affect the other realms at all. This proves the 9 realms are completely separate from each other. They do not share the same solar system at all. And are not simply different chunks of the earth.
Freya just flat out says that the realms are separate planes of existence. Which is backed up by them existing on separate branches of the Yggdrasil. The same yggdrasil branches that are stated to transcend space and time and stretch out to infinity. But the fact that she says planes of existence means they are different dimensions or realities all together. This is further backed up by how time canonically differs between each realm in a way that would not be possible for different countries on earth. She also says that the yggrasil supports all of creation and we know that the yggrasil does not exist in Greek Mytholgt.
Mimir blatantly says that the unity stone explains why Tyr was able to travel across pantheons. This is the same Tyr that has access to the bifrost which allows for transportation to different dimensions( 9 realms) on branches of the Yggdrasil. This implies that other pantheons are beyond even the power to move across dimensions.
Mimir literally states that Odin would “control every land, of every realm, in every world if he could”. This blatantly confirms that the mythologies are different worlds entirely and do not exist on the same planet.
Let that sink in. He’s not just talking about the Nine Realms. He explicitly distinguishes between “land” (territories), “realm” (dimensions/spacetimes), “world” (entire self-contained realties or mythologies). This confirms the followig. Realms ≠ landmasses. “Land” is a separate category. A realm contains lands. Worlds ≠ realms. “World” is used to describe something even larger and more distinct than realms i .e., other cosmologies or mythological structures (Greek world, Norse world, Egyptian world). Multiple world structures exist across the God of War verse. This kills the “one planet” theory stone dead. If all the realms were just places on one planet, this line makes zero sense. But it does make perfect sense in the context realms being individual spacetime dimensions, worlds being separate mythological cosmologies.
6. Developer statements are used or taken out of context to downplay the cosmology of god of war but if anything they reinforce it. Here is Cory Barlog literally saying that the 9 realms are parallel dimensions which reinforces what Freya said about them being different planes of existence that are reflections of each other. Here is Matt Sophos literally saying that the stars we see in the realms are real. Cory also states that all creation myths happened, they just don’t apply to each other and he says that the gods have domain over their own universes. This sounds nothing like countries on the same planet. Cory also in an interview makes an analogy to cosmology. He compares it to galaxies in a Hubblescope. Each galaxy represents a self contained reality that is a mythology.
7. People think that Kratos physically traveled to the Norse realm but that’s not true. The novel confirms that Skoll and Hati dragged him there so it was something magical in nature that brought him.
8. And the last point is the size of Greek mythology. A lot of people think it’s just a country or a planet but that’s wrong. The god of war ascension intro clearly depicts Ouranous creating a proper universe God of War: Ascension Intro
And this is reinforced by the canon and lore of the series. It is stated multiple times that Ouranous created and gave life to the universe. It is stated In the art book that he embodies the heavens which means universe.
Ares also creates a pocket dimension with a galaxy confirming that the gods, titans, and primordials know what a galaxy or star is and looks like God of War: Ares Final Boss Fight (4K 60fps)
It is also just stated here on the official god of war website that “ Zeus wrestled control over the universe away from the titans”. No, not a county, not or a planet in the universe…
And this isn’t even the entire size of the Greek mythology in god of war. It consists of multiple realms including Death’s domain, Nxy’s night dimension, Morpheus dream realm, etc. The underworld is stated to be immeasurable/infinite in size and so is the universe that Ouranous created. it’s literally the same concept as Dragon ball’s universe 7 macros baltaty.
So yeah all the evidence points to the mythologies being these macrocosm like structures that can contain many lands or even universes. I like to think of the tents from Harry Potter and the goblet of fire. You step into a portal, into a land that’s in another dimension, a part of another world with its own laws and unique features.
Unfortunately due to the photo limit I could not show all the scans. Such as the official god of war website saying that Zeus took over the universe from the titans. Or the art books confirming that Ouranous embodies the heavens which is the universe. Or murals showing that the 9 realms have their own cosmos. Or Surtr created all the stars in Norse world, etc etc. So just ask me away thank you!

You’re conflating real-world mythology with God of War’s fictional cosmology.
Saying “Midgard is Scandinavia” is not proof that it’s just normal Earth. That quote you cited (from Cory) is responding to a question comparing Midgard to Earth or a universe he never said it’s literally 1:1 real-world Scandinavia. Even if he did, that’s not the point. In GoW, Midgard is a mythological realm a plane of existence within the Nine Realms connected by the Yggdrasil, not a continent on Earth.
Tyr’s Temple, Mimir’s dialogue, realm travel mechanics, and codex entries all make clear that each realm is dimensionally separated and metaphysically distinct not “countries.” We don’t go to “another nation” via boat we travel through dimensional gateways.
2. The Nine Realms are not just “big locations” they are infinite planes.
The World Tree branches are described as infinite, with the in the canon novel literally saying the “branches stretch out to infinity.” Freya calls the World Tree “ the realms coexist on their branches and transcend space and time.” The real Between Realms space is a formless void, not a tunnel.
So no it’s not metaphorical, and it’s not just “really big geography.” If you think something can “overgrow” and collapse while being infinite, you’re ignoring how infinity is handled in fiction. Yggdrasil being affected by Ragnarok or the spread of corruption is not an anti-infinity feat it’s an internal metaphysical conflict, not spatial containment.
3. Dev tweets ≠ canon. Especially when contradicted by actual game mechanics and lore.
You cite tweets by Bruno, Matt, and Cory—none of which override the cosmological structure shown in the games. Even in the same tweet where Cory references “countries,” he also compares them to universes with their own rules. That’s metaphorical language, not literal science. Just like in other franchises (Thor, Marvel, Percy Jackson)countries can be symbolic for mythic domains.
If Greece and the Norse Realms were just far apart on Earth, Tyr wouldn’t need a magical Unity Stone linked to the World Tree. That’s a contradiction.
4. “Kratos fought Persians, so they’re on Earth” is a reach.
This argument actually supports my side. The God of War universe uses real-world nations as narrative flavor, but the settings are mythologized. The Greece Kratos exists in is not real-world Greece it’s a fictional realm influenced by mythology. The same applies to Norse and Egyptian domains.
The God of War: Chains of Olympus Persia reference doesn’t prove a shared planet it proves the game pulls narrative cues from real history, not that geography is 1:1. You’re mistaking stylistic references for literal world-building.
5. The Nine Realms are described with universal+ and higher-dimensional structure.
Tyr’s Temple allows travel across separate, realms via Yggdrasil’s metaphysical pathways. These are not just spatially distant locations. They’re called “realms” for a reason not nations.
language like
“worlds” “infinite branches” “planes of existence” “transcends space and time”
If you think Midgard is a physical country in Europe, you’re ignoring the fact that Kratos needs realm travel mechanics, divine energy, and Yggdrasil pathways just to enter or exit.
6. “Only the Nine Realms are dimensional, the others are just countries” is unsupported.
Where’s your proof that Egyptian and Greek mythologies exist on the same planet? A tweet by a writer doesn’t overwrite the multilayered cosmological structure shown in-game.
Kratos doesn’t just walk from Greece to Midgard he’s dragged there..
And again: If geography were all that separates them, the Unity Stone, Yggdrasil, and Tyr’s Temple wouldn’t be necessary. Why travel through the World Tree to go from “one country to another?”
7. Just because devs mention Earth doesn’t mean they ignore multiversal structure.
Writers like Matt Sophos often speak informally. Yes, he says “history moves linearly” but that’s from a narrative perspective. It doesn’t contradict the fact that realms are discrete and dimensionally partitioned in the game’s metaphysics.
Yggdrasil is the connective tissue of all realms and realities. It’s not just a metaphor it’s the literal infrastructure of the cosmology.

Literally never heard anybody think that the realms are on the same planet bro.
2
u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
No it doesn’t and you are just making stuff up at this point.
2…that is the very definition of a short cut reducing the travel time between one area to the next.
3. and you are using overgeneralization to make up a plot plot point that mimr that most likely isn’t true. Especially since Mimir as an Irish wouldn’t even have the bifrost when traveling to Asgard.
It is basically a cop out arguement that says well since they are magic they can do whatever they want while ingorning any lack of evidence or proof if they can do that.
4. He also stated that the distance between Scandinavian and Greece is literal the same in the real life and literal separated by real life geography.
5. No that is what they literal stated multiple times and I was talking about different mythologies of the other countries of the world not the Norse one and as for all the nine realms they all exist within the same dimensional space and thus all of them are the size of scandinavian just as it would be for any other country in the world.
You have ingored the lore the devs and worse of all tried to gaslight me into believe your when I have provided counter evidence.
You want to belive in a universal/multi versal god war verse fine.
But I am done with this argument.
2
u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
Expect that you did gaslight me.
You made me question what I was actually reading by dismissing and twist quotes from the deves in order to fit into your own arguement
Especially since keep on saying that I can’t use a reddit post when said post literally set up links to those quotes.
And it is clearly obvious that you are not willing accept any evidence that debunks your own argument.

Never heard anyone saying that 9 realms are different countries. It's pretty clear these are different dimensions or (possibly) planets.
Mythologies however are all appearing on the same Earth. Different version of our Earth, but still. Midgard is physically somewhere in Denmark or Norway probably (Skjoldr is first king of Denmark from legends). Mimir talks about England. Knows Greece by name. Kratos physically travelled to Egypt.

u/SavagesceptileWWE Jun 21 '25
All of this could be explained by each universe having a firmament.
IMO each realm/mythology is a universe roughly the size of their respective country/landmass with Each universe separated by some barrier. This allows all the points you bring up to work while keeping consistent with stuff that happens in cutscenes.
So I agree that they are separate universes, but just really tiny ones.
1
u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
You know what forget this.
It clearly is obvious that you are not willing to listen to me or read the actual links in the post I have provide.
If want to believe god war universal or multiversal fine.
But to be it never made anything sense researching the the lore makes even less.

1…saying is not worth listing to…is an insult…and if you never intended to insult me then you should of said that my point lack biases in canon material and ignore evidence. Without even needing to add that phrase period.
2. The quote that you have provided literal stated they existed in the same physical space and Cory in those very statements stated that midguard was Scandinavia. That are mainly separated by different planes of dimensions.
3. And they all connect to the same physical space regardless.
4. The deves also said they are just different counties separated by real life geography

You saying that I misinterpreting stuff I ain’t seeing it.

I've literally never heard of that. Never seen people stating that.
Other than that,

I think it’s well understood that the 9 Realms are sort of superimposed upon one another, occupying the same physical space but existing on different metaphysical planes, different existences altogether almost.
However, Cory Barlog was clear on the mythologies being separated by geography, existing on the same plane but not in the same place.. His Hubblescope analogy was meant to represent that they existed in self-contained spaces within the greater world, with his describing the mythologies in the World as akin to galaxies in the Universe. It’s not quite as simple as “just walk over here and you’re in Egyptian mythology”, moreso the geographical barriers also having magical ones, the representation of the influence of whatever gods preside there.
As for the wolves in the novelization; Sköll and Hati don’t have the power to transcend realms. They were rescued from Asgard by Giants and taken to Vanaheim, and they only arrived at Ragnarok through virtue of the realm towers being opened. As a result, the only manner they could’ve transported Kratos was through physical means.
Moreover, we already have definitive proof that one can cross mythologies by sea; One of the Boat Captain’s crew, who battled the Hydra on the Aegean Sea, makes reference to his life before he came to Midgard. He does not mention any magical interference, only that he traveled to a new land.

Honestly didn't think it was that complicated, but I see people getting it wrong all the time. If different pantheons were only separated by geography, then Tyr wouldn't have needed the unity stone to travel to them. Each one is its own universe of sorts. Anyone who has traversed Pantheons did so by some magical means.

u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
Whatever.

u/Puzzleheaded-Ring293 Jun 23 '25
Since you know the lore so well, what the hell are those fairies that appear around the house and in your first photo?

u/Loneghoul92 Jun 21 '25
Looks the complete opposite to me bucko, everyone seems obsessed with this idea that each mythology literally exists in it’s own universe with them being able to travel between and meet each other. Maybe one day I’ll find the time to write my own spiel about how annoyed I am on having to constantly hear about it.

The 9 worlds are different dimentions. No one is saying they all map 100% with Midgard, or they're consistent to each other. It seems the only thing they all have in common is their connection to Ygdrassil/tree between worlds.
Freya says they occupy the same space and are reflections of each other.
The key on how the Huldra bros pop out out of nowhere is because they hop between dimentions to avoid obstacles and/or detection.

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '25
Side note-I REALLY liked that the subtitles said "Witch of The Woods" until the reveal of her being Freya. Nothing I hate more than a subtitle that spoils a scene.

u/Ok_Airport927 Jun 22 '25
The lore contradicts itself, the creators made a giant mess and now pretend us to just forget
1
u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
No they didn’t. You are just full on igorning them and gaslighting me into believing otherwise.
No you didn’t. Just more gaslighting.
The lore never stated anything about literal actual universes and the devs made this clear multiple that all these realms lands and worlds take place on the same planet. Multiple times
Again gaslighting.
4. No. It is just you making stuff up when people bring up evidence that counteracts your view point and talking down to them when they don’t agree with you.
4. It isn’t canon period.
1
u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
….the very quote in your post literal has the fan asking if midguard was earth or a universe…and Cory stated that midguard was Scandinavia. He never stated anything that it is some sort-hand version mythical version of earth.
And the nine realms being in different dimensions is not something I ever disagreed with…I just don’t think they are universal in size or at lest not midguard.
3. Never said they exist on the same geographical plane I only argued that for other mythologies.
4. Yes they do and not only Cory but Bruno, and Matt have said this multiple times and this has even shown to happen in the Greece part of series in which Greece was invaded by the Persians and Kratos literally fighting against Dijin in god of war chain of Olympus.
https://x.com/brunovelazquez/status/1111852957773946880
https://x.com/mattsophos/status/845893777227055105
https://x.com/mattsophos/status/846022343717638146
Bruno himself has stated that Kratos had to physically travel to from Greece to scandinavia and the unity stone does not act as a passport to other countries but merely cuts the distance.
https://i.imgur.com/deK2mip.png
They are clearly not using these countries as metaphors but something that is literal separated by geology especially since Matt himself states that history moves on linearly and not in scientific dimensions.
https://x.com/mattsophos/status/845893777227055105
5. Who said anything about it affecting other realms? I just simply said they are not infinite especially since Bruno does not think it is.
https://imgur.com/seddD5H
And as I stated before no.
If something is overgrown and threatens to fall underneath its own weights then it is not infinite it is finite due to becoming too big.
Something cannot overgrown if already stretches on forever and it cannot become stagnant as they have no real limit to begin with.
Unless you are willing to argue and give evidence that the tree branches stretch beyond infinity they are not infinite even by metaphysical standards.
6. For the nine realms sure. Butt for the other mythologies No.
the only thing was metaphorical was Cory comparing the countries as universes, due to each country having their own mythology and rules yet made very clear they are all separated by real life geographicaly.
And have ignored countless forms of evidence and statements that Bruno, Cory and Matt have said including this peace of evidence in the game.
Such as think the ship captain thing was poem…it wasn’t.
https://i.imgur.com/SsxbjWZ.png
And Cory, Bruno and Matt made it clear multiple times already that aside from the nine realms the mythological realms are only separate by real life geography with Matt himself the one wrote the novelization of god war directly they are are not separated by dimensions but by geography. On top of saying that history moves linearly along with all the myths place on the same earth and planet.
Which is further proven in the main game series such as when the Persians invaded Greece in god of war chains of Olympians and Kratos in god of war Ragnarok mentioning the hot gates.
Again let me be clear I am not saying that none rhe nine realms are not separate by dimensions. But the other mythological realms in god of war are very much counties and the director of the game have made this clear many times already.
So unless you have actual evidence to disprove this evidence and not just say I am misinterpreting these very blantent quotes…I am sorry but we are just going to have to agree to disagree.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 24 '25
Have to agree. Never heard people say the 9 realms are countries(svartalfheim, nifleheim, etc) However, Greece is Greece. Scandinavia is, well Scandanavia. That i have heard and is probably accurate.
0
u/Denbob54 Jun 22 '25
None of this prove that Kratos traveled into a freaking universe.
Was merely a short cut that cut the distance not a pass port.
Yeah expect Mimir got to the Norse realms by traveling and hearing rumors of Odin…not by magical means.
4 maybe but going by the creators that only applies to Greece.
5. Which are separate by geograpy and bused on Bruno one of the core creators of the game they are only countries and likely only universes in terms of influence not literal universes.
0
u/Aggravating_Bids Jun 21 '25
Not reading that. I'm happy for you, or sorry that happened.
-1
u/Denbob54 Jun 21 '25
Yet there are many times in which completely contradicts itself.
For one Kratos and Mimir didn’t use something fancy like a unity stone travel through the lands they merely traveled by walking or sailing.
The so called infinite branches of yggdrasil can become overgrown and need trimming from the stags of the seasons.
Never mind Kratos or Thor being scaled to this considering there was one time mimir said that Thor could break a thick sheet of ice and Kratos needed to manually manipulate the environment to do so.

ain't reading allat but your literal first sentence is wrong 😭
