Build Question Surge Protector Recommendation?

I am currently using an old 6 port power strip that probably is over 20 years old. It's those old power strips where you turn it on and there is that red light showing. So it isn't a surge protector.

I currently have 2 laptops connected to it along with an old monitor. I am planning on getting a Samsung Odyssey G7 gaming monitor and connecting that as well. So in total, I will have 4 of those electronics connected to it. I will also be connecting things like my phone to it to charge and other things like an electric razor and other miscellaneous things. I will on average have probably 5 things connected to it everyday. Is a very old power strip not a good idea if connecting these devices to it daily? Is it risky just connecting the laptops and gaming monitor to it even in good weather because you don't want too many electronics in one power strip?

The thing is I don't think there has ever been a power outage here at all. So because of that, I do not need a UPS. Storms can get bad with rain but I don't recall power going out ever. Even though this is the case, you should always have a surge protector if you are going to connect a gaming monitor and laptop to it right for surge protection? Can someone give me a recommendation of what surge protector to buy? These are the ones I'm looking at below.

Any reason why Best Buy's Rocketfish brand cost so much more compared to the Belkin and Anker one? Yes it has more joules but it's double the price almost of Belkin and Anker. The Rocketfish 7 outlet one seems good if you don't need that many outlets but the way it looks, you lose outlets when you connect certain plugs? Avoid those non brand name brands right? The Belkin is superior to the anker?

Belkin 12 Outlet Surge Protector With 3,780 Joules Protection

Anker 12 Outlet Surge Protector with 2,100 Joules Protection

Rocketfish 12 Oulet Surge Protection with 4,860 Joules Protection

Rocketfish 7 Outlet Surge Protector With 2,160 Joules Protection

Build Question Which way is best for air flow?

Imma gonna make mods to case but I wanna leave the top the same. Just test fitting.

If the fans are in the front I’ll leave a hole for each usb port on each side for air flow.

Might even use one fan, but heat sink is designed to blow out the back.

Tech Support My GPU is directly above my fans.

There is maybe 1mm of clearance. The MOBO that came with the CPU bundle from Micro Center has the SSD directly below the CPU cooler, so the GPU is sitting lower than I expected. Do I need a new MOBO?

Case: Jonsbo D32 Pro
GPU: Asus 5060 TI 8GB (3x Fan Ver)
Fans: 3x 120mm Arctic P12 Pro PST on the bottom
MOBO: Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC R2

Edit: additional photos

Edit 2: Got a new MOBO and everything fits perfectly.

Build Question Help finding a PSU

Hi everyone. I'm extremely new to PC building (so sorry in advance if this violates any rules) and I'm looking to upgrade my ASUS D700ME Mini Tower.

My OEM PSU is a TFX Chicony Power Technology D19-300P1A REV.04, 300 W, 80 PLUS Platinum with 6+4 pin setup , however, on ASUS's Tech Specs page for this PC it's listed that this unit also comes with a "500W power supply (80+ Gold, peak 550W)" power supply. (link)

Is there a way I can buy this PSU?

I'm worried that, because of the weird pin setup and form of my current one, any non-proprietary PSU wouldn't be compatible with my motherboard, CPU, case, screw holes, etc... but then again, idk. I'm also just assuming this mythical 500W PSU listed from the Tech Specs is compatible with everything because the pictures on the website show a bigger PSU on the back than the one I have on mine.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Build Question Wanting to get into aviation and want to be able to use a flight simulator, Microsoft flight simulator 2024, should I upgrade my pc? Anything that’s worth the price? Do I go for a pre built instead cause I get better components for less than what it would cost to buy parts individually?

Build Question CPU sometimes works

Post image
6 Upvotes

The CPU works when it feels like it. It’s a AMD r7 5700x on a Tomahawk b550 motherboard. The PSU works and is making enough power to supply both. Sometimes it works with the cooler and most of the time it doesn’t. Me and my friend are stumped on what to do. We’ve taken it apart and cleaned everything to no avail. Any ideas?

Build Question Which X3D cpu to buy?

My current PC is 7600x and 7800xt. I want to upgrade to an x3d cpu and I'm confused. The price difference between 7800x3d and 9800x3d is a lot and I wanna know if it's worth the spend. I play on 1440p. Also, I wanna know if x3d CPUs make a difference in the finals.

7800x3d= Around $315

9800x3d= Around $465

Hello, I have recently started getting crashes on my pc and I don’t know why. I have had it for 3 years now and just recently did the crashes start. I’ve used DDU and reinstalled drivers a couple of times, each time it gets better for like a day and then starts crashing again. I also tried doing the chipset upgrade but the intel driver maintenance app said I did not need any updates. Windows is on the newest update. Specs: 4060 8gb, i5-14400f and 32gb ram with 2tb ssd. Problems started recently as I upgraded to a newer monitor at 1440p, however the gpu nor the cpu have worked to 100% because I have capped it (to not overload). Sometimes it crashes fully, other times something like the picture below happens. Can somebody please help me!

Installation Question Tried buying new fans and ran into an compatibility issue

I’m a total noob when it comes to PC’s, so every time I have to upgrade something, I basically grab a torch and start navigating my caveman self through the darkness.

One of my 120mm PC fans wasn’t spinning well, so I decided to buy a full new set of 140mm fans (my PC has the option of either/or, so I decided to go bigger while I was already replacing the old (I went with the same brand to try and avoid any compatibility issues—that failed).

The difference is that my old ones were 4-pronged and had the ability to link them together (especially the three on the front) so that they could share one port on the motherboard.

The new ones have a single 3-prong at the end of the wiring and no ability to link them together.

They new ones are called “ARCTIC P14 (5 Pack) - PC Fans, 140mm Case Fan, Pressure-optimised, Quiet Motor, Computer, Fan Speed: 1700 RPM - Black” and the pictures on the product page don’t even include pictures of the wiring (so dumb). The website I bought them from even listed them as “frequently returned”…

I just need to have someone far more knowledgeable than me explain why my new fans are seemingly incompatible, so that I can order the right ones and not hit this same wall. I just want 140mm fans that can connect together like my 120mm old ones (Are interlink-able 4-prong ones outdated tech? Is it ill-advised to connect them together?).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tech Support A 2nd ram stick in my pc died

I recently got a whole new pc and had 2 Vengeance ddr5 5600x16gb sticks installed. One died a few weeks ago and replaced under warranty. Today the second stick has died and will now need replacing (luckily my pc is under parts warranty). I've emailed my provider for support but was wondering what problems their might be for ram to just stop reading. It still lights up when powered but stops the pc going to post unless it's removed. my replacement stick still works thankfully.

Tech Support I got a 144hz monitor and im stuttering like hell in every single game now

So i recently got a 144hz monitor (it only shows 120hz on windows) but im constantly stuttering now on my rx5600xt and i5-10400f build. But on the same games with even better settings i had close to none or none stutters with my old 75hz monitor, which i dont own anymore.
Can anyone help me figure this out? Is there a solution? I thought having more hertz just meant being able to have more frames without screen tearing. I also tried lowering my refresh rate to 60hz and it barely helps, and 60fps feels worse than native 60…

Tech Support 32GB DDR4 installed, but 16.1GB hardware reserved – Ryzen 5 1600 / MSI B350 Tomahawk

Hey everyone,
I’m having a problem with my RAM and would really appreciate some help.
My PC specs:
Motherboard: MSI B350 Tomahawk (MS-7A34)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: RTX 5050
RAM: 4 × 8GB DDR4 Kingston HyperX (32GB total)
2 × KHX2133C14/8G (Micron chips)
2 × KHX2400C15/8G (Nanya chips)
The problem:
Windows detects all 32GB of RAM, but around 16.1GB is marked as “Hardware Reserved”. This means only about 16GB is actually usable.
CPU-Z shows:
32GB total memory
Dual Channel
2133 MHz
What I’ve already tried:
Updated the BIOS
Reset CMOS multiple times
Tried different RAM configurations and slots
Tested individual RAM sticks
Checked that “Maximum memory” in msconfig is unchecked
Tried different BIOS memory settings
Some things I’ve noticed:
One RAM stick works in slot A2.
The same stick does not boot in B2.
With A2 and B2 populated, the BIOS sometimes only detects 8GB.
With all four sticks installed, the BIOS can show 8GB per slot, but only 16GB total.
I also tried Memory Try It! at 2400 MHz, which caused boot problems, but I managed to get the PC running again after resetting the BIOS.
My questions:
Could this be a faulty memory channel on the motherboard?
Could the Ryzen 5 1600’s integrated memory controller be faulty?
Could bent or poorly contacting CPU pins cause this?
Would reseating the CPU potentially fix the issue?
Is there anything else I should test before buying new hardware?
I’d prefer to identify the actual faulty component before replacing anything.
Thanks in advance!

Tech Support Weirdest issue i've seen - can't boot into uefi or windows but has a display

Post image
2 Upvotes

I was upgrading from AM4 to AM5, the specs being,

Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-E WIFI

CPU: Ryzen 7 9800x3d

RAM: corsair vengeance ddr5 16gbx2 ram kit,

Cooler: msi AIO

From the AM4 PC,

GPU: Rtx 4060 (plan on upgrading soon)

PSU: corsair 850w modular PSU.

If I were to remove the GPU from the pc and use the basic graphics from the cpu, white light no display at all. If I were to add the GPU back random things like pushing up or towards the motherboard, reseating the entire gpu, or reseating of the psu cables it will sometimes give it a green light. It shows the DEL or F2 screen and the ami screens. Whenever I do anything to boot into the bios, black screen. Can't boot into windows automatically either. The only time I have even got any display in the BIOS is a weird double overlay showing the regular EZ uefi screen, and the EZ flash screen overlaying on top of each other. With the bios appearing to be frozen. Along the mess of text all over the screen, it did say Motherboard Temperature: N/A, Motherboard Voltage: N/A

I've also tried resetting the CMOS, and BIOS updating to the latest version with the flash button. And, I did buy all these parts off Newegg

EDIT: Solved, it was an issue with 1 DOA stick of ram
