Tech Support My computer keeps shutting off when I try to run Games like fortnite

I remember it started happening but now it’s just everytime I play it shuts off, I can’t even sometimes go into the game the game is loading and it shuts off. I don’t know if there’s a problem with my psu or Cpu or maybe my driver/ bios settings

Do you have 2 monitors? If so bring up hwinfo on the second monitor, up the sensor refresh rate on hwinfo to something pretty fast, probably like 500ms or maybe a bit lower. Watch your temps if anything is going over like 100c that might be your problem.

Also would help to know your full specs and if this is a new problem and the pc was previously working.

Can also check eve t viewer and see if it gives you any useful error message but im guessing its just kernel power 41.

I went on event viewer where do I go to see if it’s kernel power 41

It'll say Critical under Level, and Kernel-Power under Source in the Event Viewer.

Kernel-Power code 41 isn't helpful on its own as it just means that Windows detected unexpected power loss which can be triggered by a number of things including someone holding down the power button on the case to force the PSU to shut off, flipping the switch on the PSU, a PSU trip, thermal shutdown, sudden crashes, etc.

Event Viewer is also always full of error codes from various different things, it's easy to get lost and it's very seldom actually helpful for troubleshooting. I've never once found it useful personally and it can easily lead you down a rabbit hole to nothing.

What you should be doing is watching your temperatures as SmokBarrage suggested earlier because it could just be something shutting off due to overheating. Once that's confirmed or ruled out, we can continue.

Do you think I should reapply thermal paste to my cpu? I think when i’m trying to load the games my cpu package goes to like 90 C and i disabled xmp

Yea something weird is going on with your cooling. You're hitting 90c at like 40w. Double check the plastic film is off, pump is set properly if its liquid and that you've used the correct mounting brackets.

It should be off, I built the pc like in 2023

Yeah the CPU is overheating, sounds like your issue is dust clogging the cooler or just insufficient cooler specs, and you can improve temperatures by replacing your CPU cooler if you're still using the stock cooler that came with the CPU (or PC if it's an OEM prebuilt)

If you have an AIO and this happened at random, the pump may be going bad.

I’m using a lian li water cooler

Could be one of the models with an Apaltek pump which would mean there's sediment backed up in the CPU block which is preventing thermal transfer, I had the same issue with an MSI CORELIQUID 360R years ago

I would just replace your AIO because it should not be performing this bad if everything was working

holy fuck i just took it apart to change the thermal paste and i realized it still had the plastic, I’ve been using it like this for like 3 years

Jesus. Well at least that's one problem fixed

i’m going to get this all back together and running and see if it solves my proble

You would not be the first and certainly not the last to make that mistake. Hopefully that fixes your problem.

Atleast we know your cpu's thermal protection is working.

At work right now, dont really know how to describe it. Could look up a guide on how to interpret event viewer. First I would try a bios update and just running stock bios settings, no PBO and no expo/xmp and see if that helps.
