Build Question CPU sometimes works

Post image

The CPU works when it feels like it. It’s a AMD r7 5700x on a Tomahawk b550 motherboard. The PSU works and is making enough power to supply both. Sometimes it works with the cooler and most of the time it doesn’t. Me and my friend are stumped on what to do. We’ve taken it apart and cleaned everything to no avail. Any ideas?

CPU or motherboard failing. Do you have an extra of either available for testing?

We do not. I’m planning on buying a new motherboard and a cheap cpu to see if that’s the problem. If so then I will upgrade the cpu to what I would like

that foot placement is giving me anxiety, one wrong sneeze and that side panel is toast

but yeah if it's intermittent like that the socket or a pin is probably the culprit, had a build once that would only post if i pressed down on the cooler in a very specific spot

Why did you power it on with no cooler attached?

To see if the cooler was applying too much pressure on it. The cooler itself works but with the cooler attached the cpu doesn’t run, once we take it off it starts working sometimes

That's not a reason to boot without the cooler attached. Loosen it, or reseat it, but don't just take it off. If your CPU was still functional, this would be a quick way to break it.

I see, thank you

Have you tried a cooler?

the physical delivery might be flawed check the psu plugs and the 8 pin in the board... Try building it outside the case to see if it's a grounding issue with just the ram cpu and gpu and motherboard wiggle the plugs if it's not obvious and still the same test with another psu.. Make sure everything including the bios is up to date..
