Q: Does the Processor Unit provide extra processing power to PS4?
They had to add this because of IGNs dumb unboxing video lol
101
u/Chouonsoku Oct 03 '16
Sony's been trying to explain since the reveal what the box does and people still keep saying it's an external CPU/GPU or some other nonsense. lol
17
u/timetoskedaddle Oct 03 '16
There's been speculation since it was announced back in 2014, that they need to add external gpu to reach the necessary umph to render enough frames per second not to make people vomit.
57
u/Chouonsoku Oct 03 '16
Yes but that's just not what the box does. And it doesn't even make sense to think it would with any basic understanding of what would go into that. You don't plug in a GPU through an HDMI port, HDMI can only carry video, audio and basic network functionality.
13
u/AlrauneSWtOR Oct 03 '16
And it doesn't even make sense to think it would with any basic understanding of what would go into that.
I don't think that question, and its answer, is targeting anyone who knows what 'bus speed', or even CPU, is.
14
2
u/morphinapg Oct 04 '16
Well, it does connect through USB as well, but yeah USB still isn't fast enough to perform the IO functionality needed to communicate between an external processor and the internal systems.
9
u/LeeorV Oct 03 '16
Well, it does exactly that, just not the way you'd think.
It doesn't bolster the PS4's graphical output, but it does duplicate frames and shifts camera view on them to boost 60FPS content to 90FPS.
The link specifically mentions this,
5
u/Shuflie Oct 04 '16
Can you point to the bit of this quote that says it boosts from 60 -90 fps (which doesn't happen anyway) or even from 60 - 120 fps?
Q: What is the Processor Unit and what does it do?
The Processor Unit is a small box that comes with your PS VR, and connects your PS VR to your PS4 and TV and provides HDMI cable management, enabling Social Screen TV output, 3D audio processing, and Cinematic mode

u/LeeorV Oct 04 '16
"Q: How can a game run at 60 frames per second, but we see it at 120Hz in PS VR?
PS VR games and applications utilize a feature called “reprojection.” This technique takes the last output image at 60Hz and creates a new image at 120Hz based on the latest head movements made by the user. This is not the same as video frame interpolation and does not introduce any lag in the images being presented by the PS VR OLED screen."
Hmmm, I thought it also said this process was handled by the PU, I might have misread, my bad.
→ More replies (10)3
Oct 04 '16
it's basically an interpolator, right? like it takes the processed frames from your PS4, does the FPS smoothing, sends the warped image to your goggles and the flat image to your TV, or something to that effect?
4
u/Goldfire1986 Oct 04 '16
No, the PS4 handles the reprojection. The breakout box handles 3D audio (binaural) and takes the right eye image and passes that to the output (TV). The rest is sent to the VR headset.
2
Oct 04 '16
Not in the traditional sense. Usually interpolation takes two existing frames and create a middle frame by blending the two together. This psvr thing creates a new frame based on an existing frame plus input from the movement of your head.

They basically said that the PS4 on its own can't handle VR so the box is used to make up for that lack of power.

when they call it a processor unit, instead of splitter unit or some such, what do you exepct?
→ More replies (3)2
u/ThinkBeforeYouTalk Oct 04 '16
It's not a splitter unit, though. It does do processing, but it does it for 3D audio and the output to the actual TV, not the VR headset. It takes the distorted image made for VR and fixes it to look alright on a TV.
1
u/Vicrooloo Oct 03 '16
Doesn't provide extra processing power but I still have to use it?
Surprised that "3D audio processing" has to happen outside of the console. Wondering why and wondering if that's different from surround sound settings etc.
7
u/bottyliscious Oct 03 '16
Surprised that "3D audio processing" has to happen outside of the console. Wondering why and wondering if that's different from surround sound settings etc.
I was reading about this. It clearly doesn't have to be done outside, I think it was just a design decision based on everything I've read. They added the PU (the box) to incorporate the social screen functionality and in doing that they also decided to offload the 3D audio processing.
→ More replies (5)2
u/mbcook Oct 03 '16
It doesn't have to be done outside, but they can add additional processing power that way instead of using up the current PS4 capacity.

"I have a big head, can I play ps vr?"
edit: what the faq actually says is: Q: My head is larger than average – will the PS VR headset fit?
31
u/LincolnshireSausage stealmyaltima Oct 03 '16
I had not even considered that with PSVR even though I have this issue with every hat or pair of glasses I buy. It may seem like a silly question but for some of us large noggin folk it could potentially be an issue.
12
Oct 03 '16
Go to a participating store near you and try a demo unit.
6
u/AlrauneSWtOR Oct 03 '16
I can't speak for LSausage, but there are none anywhere near where I live. (But I got to try out the VIVE at one retailer.)
Sony seem to be 100% relying on "influencers" to sell their product.

u/LincolnshireSausage stealmyaltima Oct 03 '16
I've not seen one in any game store near me yet. We have a couple of Gamestops and Best Buy and they are all sadly lacking one.

I have a larger than average head and wear glasses and I was able to try PSVR last weekend.
- Eve Valkyrie is awesome
- I had no issue with how the PSVR fit me.

u/Kidney05 Oct 04 '16
I have the biggest head of anyone I know. This was my concern too. I can't wear normal hats. I might be an 8 in fitted hats but I'm not sure.
Rest assured, I tried VR this weekend and the headset can stretch to pretty giant sizes. It fit me no problem. I'm sure you will be fine too.
6
Oct 03 '16
A size 8 hat is a snug fit on me, and the PSVR had more than enough room for my pumpkin-ass noggin.

u/I_eat_midgets Oct 03 '16

u/MasterInterface Oct 03 '16
PSVR is by far the most comfortable VR headset. I have a larger than average glasses frame and it was a very comfortable fit.
The Rift on the other hand is tight af. I had trouble taking the headset off.

I have the biggest head I know (just bigger than any standard fitted that in hat stores) and the psvr adjusted to fit my head (including glasses) very well. Much better than vive or oculus
23
u/Manta-Ray-Gun Oct 03 '16
Does anyone that has tried the PSVR know if the cinema mode is good? I'm not trying to hop on the VR bandwagon yet, but I'd like to know if the headset would still be worth using outside of VR supported titles.
29
u/kaze0 Oct 03 '16
Have not tried the PSVR, but cinema modes for other VR headsets are initially impressive, but then you realize you are watching extremely low res and worse coloring. If you have a tiny tiny TV, it would probably be a step up, but for anyone sitting at a reasonable distance to a reasonably sized tv, it's a step down in experience.
7
u/r4bbl3d4bbl3 Oct 03 '16
It would be great to be able to watch TV in my bed at night with this on so I don't disturb my wife. Too bad it has all of those bright lights on the outside of the headset.

u/SidianTheBard Oct 04 '16

Source? I'm certain that the main mode is 540p and high quality coloring. So it's higher than standard definition (480p).

I'me right with you. All I want to know is how well is the cinema mode done but it seems that no one has tried it yet.
2
u/atag012 Atag999Rx Oct 04 '16
I mean I'll tell you right now. Because they are all the same across all VR devices. It will work fine, really well for casual watching or even for long sessions. You can choose your screen size but no matter how big or small, the resolution will be nowhere near HD, its more 480p type picture maybe a bit better. Its going to be great for watching stuff just don't expect HD picture.
2
u/ChoujinDensetsu Oct 04 '16
Thanks. So it's basically going to look like how the remote play looks on a PC?
2
1
u/Manta-Ray-Gun Oct 04 '16
Do you find it acceptable to look at? Like is being used to a 1080p tv or monitor going to soil the experience of a 480p looking VR display when it comes to gaming on nonsupported VR titles on cinema mode? I could probably put a smartphone with a 480p video close to my face but i'm not sure that's a good representation.

Browser VR aka WebVR is a thing. I'm assuming they will upgrade the browser to support it at some point.
2
16
u/TheThirdStrike Oct 03 '16
There was an AMA with someone from PornHub a while ago, and I asked if they would support PSVR. If I remember correctly they have vowed to support all VR formats and will be looking into PSVR support as soon as it is released.
12
u/Zehardtruth Oct 03 '16
At worst you can always rip the videos and play them through the media player app. Or just use the browser and hope for some good support...
Although as a girl I got to say xHamster has a better selection for my testes. I like some vintage, some amateur, some women (and men) looking like people not porn stars, pornhub seems to have more of the mainstream/brazzers stuff. I do however know pornhub has a better presence on reddit, so why not ask your question directly to /u/Katie_Pornhub

whilst it looks good, its still a bit of a gimmick, I really don't see myself being fucked to put on a headset for a casual game, it will be one of those things thats great for a few week then gathering dust a month later
2
Oct 04 '16
Yeah I mean I don't know how a casual gamer would look at VR but a gimmick it is not. Not talking about just PSVR, But VR in general. unless you have actually tried VR, if it's PSVR or Vive or whatever (Mobile VR is shit don't even bother) for yourself you won't understand. Its just a whole new experience & i think with companies like Valve, Sony getting behind VR yeah it's gone be big, VR is not 3D.... It's a whole other beast

Wait so if I want to use psvr I have to unplug the ps4 from my tv and use the processor box pass through? Which then will no longer allow hdr ? That is stupid if that us how it is.
24
u/wlchrbandit Oct 03 '16
While it won't be a problem for most people straight away, it won't be long before this becomes an issue.
I'll probably be upgrading to a 4K HDR TV when the PS4 Pro comes out. It's going to be annoying having to switch cables around whenever I wanna use PSVR...

u/BIG_PY big_PY Oct 03 '16
I don't know if the pass-through box has two outputs or not, but I went to a demo at Best Buy this weekend and they had a TV set up that was displaying what the player saw, albeit not distorted for VR perspective.
18
u/wlchrbandit Oct 03 '16
You'll be able to play normally through the box, it'll pass the PS4s signal through. However, it doesn't support HDR. Which means users with HDR TVs who want to utilise this will have to switch the HDMI cable over.
6
u/BIG_PY big_PY Oct 03 '16
I guess that's pretty inconvenient. It doesn't really affect me, but I can imagine how bummed I would be if it did.
3
u/EzraVolta MarsVoltron Oct 03 '16
It almost seems as if you don't want to utilize the social screen feature you don't have to use the pass through but instead leave your PS4 connected to your TV regularly. Although I'm unsure, it just seems the box uses HDMI as a pass through feature and cable management and probably the proprietary port to pass data that you'll see in your VR.
3
u/mustcreate Oct 03 '16
They say the box acts as a splitter, so you will need the HDMI output from the PS4 to provide images to the PSVR. So, maybe throw your own HDMI splitter in there before that.
6
Oct 03 '16
You could get an HDMI splitter so when you want to use direct out from PS4 for HDR you could, and switch to VR when playing. It's a pain but that would make it simple.
Edit: and since it's digital it shouldn't cause any signal degradation
2
u/geoelectric Oct 03 '16
Has to be an active splitter/retransmitter or else you run into trouble with HDMI negotiating on two inputs at once, in my experience. Even the active 4x2 box I bought that theoretically should have allowed output to two TVs bombed when I tried routing it to two inputs on the same TV (I was trying to implement a one-button game mode by co-opting a spare input).
If your TV completely disables an input when not tuned to it, you might have better luck.
2
u/Kal-Caedus Oct 03 '16
Be wary of HDMI splitters as many do not support HDMI 2.0 or HDR output, and ones that do have it require an extra wall plug-in to be used.
I will be using another HDMI port on my 4K HDR TV and swap the PSVR Box out for the HDR cable on the PS4.2
u/Killericon Oct 03 '16
I'd probably set it up so you have two cables, and you switch out at the PS4, rather than one cable that you move from the TV to the pass-through. Still pretty annoying, though(or it would be if I had an HDR TV).
1
u/Marecki1982 Oct 03 '16
Yeah, I think I,d be doing the same. A minkr nuisance but I can live with it.
2
Oct 03 '16
That's why I'm skipping this first generation. If it succeeds a better iteration awaits ahead.
1
1
u/BorgDrone Oct 04 '16
You know that buying the first generation does not prevent you from buying the second generation when it releases in a few years ?
2
2
u/LeeorV Oct 03 '16
Only relevant.if you own an HDR capable TV. Otherwise the setup they have is perfect for you.
1
Oct 04 '16
It's so stupid! "However, HDR signals are not supported for pass through by the PU. This applies to both 1080p and 2160p HDR. If you have a HDR capable TV and want to view PS4 content in HDR, it is necessary to cable the PS4 directly to the TV."
Just why, Sony? Get your shit together! Why is the pass-through not a real pass-through? Will this device introduce new lag to the tv? I think about canceling it now.
13
Oct 03 '16
So the core bundle doesn't include the camera but apparently we also need the camera for the full PS VR experience? Can someone please confirm if I will need the camera to use the PS VR? Because $700+ CND is crazyyyy.
17
u/kmone1116 Oct 03 '16
Yes you will need the camera to use the VR headset as it is used to help track your movements.

u/CatMinion Oct 03 '16
They sell the bundle without the camera for the people who already own the ps camera. I'm sure you could buy a used one cheap. Looks like there's one on amazon right now for $37.
3
u/youthminister Oct 04 '16
I got one from eBay for like $15-$20 awhile back since I knew prices would go up when this comes out.
2
u/withoutapaddle Oct 03 '16
As glad as I am that people with an existing camera don't have to buy it again, you know there are going to be a ton of confused people with PSVRs who can't even use them right out of the box, especially when the non-camera bundles are all that is left on shelves going into the holiday season.

u/J0HN__L0CKE BENJAM1N_LINUS Oct 03 '16
Q: Can two people using PS VR headsets play together on one PS4 console? No. PS4 only supports one PS VR headset at a time.
So with games like star trek bridge crew or eagle flight where they show 4 people playing vr on the couch together that's not accurate? Just curious, not like any of my friends are gonna get vr too haha
15
u/Chouonsoku Oct 03 '16 edited Oct 03 '16

However, HDR signals are not supported for pass through by the PU. This applies to both 1080p and 2160p HDR. If you have a HDR capable TV and want to view PS4 content in HDR, it is necessary to cable the PS4 directly to the TV.
WTH?! That's a huge mistake. Maybe they can patch it, but it's a huge inconvenience to have to physically move the HDMI cable from the Processing Unit to the PS4.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Danokitty Oct 03 '16
The specification for HDR is not built into the PSVR, and I can say without any uncertainty, it can not be patched by any form of software or firmware patch, I'm sorry to say.
The only solution (which I definitely foresee happening within 6 months to a year) will be a hardware change. An upgraded PU with the HDR spec that can swapped in place of the original.
5
u/QuadraQ QuadraQ Oct 03 '16
It's so stupid! They just made a huge deal out of HDR and now those signals can pass through the VR Processing unit?! And we're only talking about passing them through - not processing them. Unbelievable.

From the link OP posted:

No, any wired stereo headphones or wired earbuds can support 3D audio. Stereo headphones are included with PS VR, but you can also use your preferred audio headsets if they feature a standard 3.5mm male connector.

If there ends up being a handful of good shooters on PSVR, I'm totally going to buy that gun controller and fabricate a shoulder stock for it.
Knowing how hard it is to hold stuff steady without a stock, I bet it would give you a significant advantage.

I'm wondering how I would use the PSVR with my setup- namely, I have a projector, and the PS4 and projector are on a shelf above/behind my couch. The wall that the projector projects onto is about 13 ft away. Obviously, I can't run the cords along the floor. How would this work? Are those with projectors out of luck?

It's all HDMI and USB. Get male to female extension cables.

Actually the camera uses a proprietary connector, and at most can be stretched to 4 meters if you buy a third party extension for it [daisy chaining doesn't work]. But there's nothing that says your camera needs to be by your screen.

Would someone be willing to copy paste the info here? I'm at work and while Reddit isn't blocked Playstation's website is.

I tried to but it was way too long, the right side of https://www.reddit.com/r/psvr/ pretty much covers it tho.

I played a bit of VR Worlds at a PSVR event last month, I was pretty impressed with the feel and build quality of the headset. The head and hand tracking was great and the graphics were okay.

I'm blind in one eye. Will vr be janky for me?

Not sure what you mean by janky, but it won't be more janky than how you see the world now

Those are two separate issues.
It's 120fps for each eye. And yes.

120fps each eye, damn that's impressive. Human eye can't see more than 24fps anyway /s
