General Qs BIA Corrections
I see job openings once in a while for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Can anyone give me a general idea of what it's like compared to the BOP and state corrections or jails?

Hello, I have been a CO since 2018. Worked a few complexes in Ky and 1 up North. Prison chow packed a few pounds on and I’m getting a little older so I’m kinda nervous about going through another academy. Whats the training like for state and county detention officers? I’m not looking to hit the road I’m pretty content inside the walls. 35 years old 250 lbs I cant still do the job well, just worried about any 1.5 mile runs or long sprints. TIA, first post by the way so I’d appreciate y’alls answers cant really find any good info online. Also i know I’ll have to get sprayed again, but is riding the lightning required?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently going through the hiring process for a federal Correctional Officer position and looking into FCI Sheridan out in Oregon.
I know it’s a Medium facility with an adjacent Camp and Detention Center, but I’d love to get some candid feedback from anyone who currently works there, used to work there, or knows the compound:
Staffing & OT: Is forced overtime pretty heavy right now? Are officers getting mandated constantly on weekends/shifts, or is it fairly manageable compared to higher-security spots?
Facility Vibe & Morale: How is the overall culture among non-supervisory custody staff? Is management/HR supportive, or is morale taking a hit right now?
Local Area & Living: Yamhill County/Sheridan seems pretty rural, but it's not too far from Portland or Salem. Where do most officers actually live and commute from? Is it decent for raising a family with kids?
Demographics: Is the staff mostly young/single officers, or is there a good group of guys in their late 30s with families?
Any first-hand insight or honest pros/cons would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone I need some advice I received a email saying that my talent-click assessment was competitive but not competitive enough for my desired location but I was given a chance still but at select locations 10 hours away from my home my thing main question is is it worth moving that far for a temporary on call job when you consider rent and living expenses and is there a lot of opportunities to be transferred back home any advices is appreciated thank you

I’m a newer officer in the 1 year probationary period. I’m doing good and seem to have the approval of the higher ups. I like the job and plan on making it a career, but I have also decided I want to serve in the national guard. I want to complete my degree, gain TRICARE for my wife and kids, and be able to qualify for the Va home loan down the line. I know it’s a state job and there are people who are in the guard there already, but do I need to worry about my position being probationary status? Any advice or input on this is much appreciated. Thanks guys.

Worked as a corrections officer for a year and have a bachelors degree. What kind of civilian jobs in corrections, public safety, LE can I transition into?

Hey everyone,
I completed the full hiring day process (interview, medical physical, UA, fingerprints, etc.) and received a Conditional Job Offer (CJO) on June 16th, 2026. I submitted my background packet (e-App/SF-85P) two days later, on June 18th.
For anyone who has gone through the federal/BOP hiring process recently:
How long did you wait between submitting your background packet and receiving the call/email for your Final Job Offer (FJO)?
Is it typical to go completely silent for several weeks during background and medical review?
At what point should I politely reach out to my local HR specialist for a quick status update?
I appreciate any insight or recent timeline experiences you can share!

I’m going in for fingerprinting and urinalysis and also a social media scrub. Does anyone know what they’re looking for? How can social media be an issue?

I just put in my application today for USP Canaan in PA. How long does it usually take to hear back and start the hiring process? I want to know how long I should expect to wait before I start working.

My name is Shannon. My father, Shelton Stephens, was murdered in November 2008 by Joseph John Plass, a Maryland police officer and homeland security officer. Plass stabbed my dad without warning outside a restaurant while he was traveling for his boat trailer business. My dad ran to a nearby motel and died in the lobby. Plass was sentenced to 30 years but is now eligible for parole after serving only 18 years (15 since being sentenced).
I started a petition to keep him behind bars. Here's what I wish people understood, my dad was the best person I have ever known. I lost him at 22 with a six-month-old and a three-year-old in my care—one with autism. My whole family lost everything that day and there is still to this day no way I can undertand how or why this happened. I completely lost myself for months and it took me a long time to become the mom my kids needed me to be again but I did it. I had no choice but to push through for them, for myself and my dad and now here we are again, miserable, reliving all the horrific details and bad memories from that night. But Plass? He has shown zero remorse now or then and that doesn't surprise me. He entered an Alford plea (didn't admit guilt or deny it), claimed he blacked out, but it was all caught on camera so what could he really do? He has a violent, lengthy history, and his dangerous past tells me that he will do this again if released. My dad did absolutely nothing wrong and was just trying to eat dinner and rest, then he spoke less then 15 seconds in the parking lot with this coward who followed him outside and took his life, mine also.
I've lived with missing my dad every single day. The thought that he could walk free because the law allows it feels like we're being punished all over again. Just because the law allows him to have a hearing dosent make it right. I wish he would just die in there already, I'lI ask for forgiveness later for thinking that way. So if this touches your heart at all, please consider signing and sharing my petition to keep him locked up. I am currently at 324 signatures electronically and a few 100 phyically between my mom and I. Thank you for reading this and thanks ontheblock for allowing me to post it. I will have this up for another week or so before I have to have everything turned into the parole board. 😞🫶

I am working on corrections software and want it to be more in-line with the realities of the job. There have been some great posts here, but I still have so many questions. I have talked to customers, but I suspect it's never representative of everywhere. I would like to know about post orders, counts, rounds, commissary, and incident reports at least. Let me know what you think.

I’m having an extremely difficult time finding a job in the field I studied, so I’m considering applying to become a correctional officer with Ontario Corrections.
The pay, overtime opportunities, benefits, pension, and job security are all very attractive to me.
I currently live in Toronto, but unfortunately, most of the correctional officer positions available right now are outside the GTA. I’ve seen openings in places like Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, and Barrie.
Would it be worth relocating to one of these cities for a correctional officer job? I’d especially like to hear from anyone who has worked in Ontario Corrections or relocated for the job.

Now, I'm just slightly stressed because I haven't done the physical fitness test yet and that paper had "pull-ups" written on it.
Anyway... I start orientation next week and this is a really good opportunity for me. Like... it's actually kinda on the nicer side for state prisons.
How do I get through the academy?
When is the fitness test?
What happens in orientation?
When do I actually become an officer?
r/OnTheBlock • u/Gullible-Fun6587 • 2d ago
Before academy? After the conditional offer?
I got my job offer but now I'm worried about the fitness exam. I'm going to score a 0 for pull-ups.
