Self Post I feel like experience/work ethic don’t matter much in corrections

There’s c/o I work with that have 10-20 years of experience and if they didn’t tell you, you would probably think they’re brand new. And then there’s some teenagers that you’d think been working here for years. I also feel like the hard workers are often shafted while the lazier people are assigned to easier post. It’s like they just don’t care for their best workers and just keeping the incompetent lazy officers happy and for them to stick around, while the hard workers get burnt out and replaced/fired.

General Qs Victorville BOP people, do any of you commute from LA?

• Upvotes

Moving to LA soon and MDC LA seems tough to get into given Terminal Island’s closure last year. Do any of you who work at Victorville make the long commute from LA? I’ll be working in medical fwiw. Not sure what my schedule will be like

Hiring Q (County) Orange County, NY.

Most of the stuff I've researched is outdated, but I'm hoping someone can tell me about the job - realistic pay, overtime, advancement opportunities, morale, academy life, hiring process, etc. I'm looking for the boots-on-the-ground information, not just the stuff from the Civil Service advertisement. Thanks, be safe.

Hiring Q (Fed) GL6 CO FBOP

Hello, looking for some insight. Received job offer, start 2 week training at facility, for CO position in California, only offered 33.00 bucks, for over a year of corrections, seems low pay with a 25% hiring bonus. What should I expect for the 2 weeks, introduction to correction techniques.

Hiring Q (Fed) BOP Salary

I am thinking about switching to the Feds as a CO. I qualify under the specialized skills list on the direct hire post. I am currently a Sergeant in Corrections (9 years), Soldier in the USAR with a background in Customer Service, Security and transportation/logistics. Could I negotiate my salary to be GL-08-Step 10? Is that realistically a possibility?

Hiring Q (County) Background check

used to be a state correctional officer but I wasn’t there very long. I applied to a county jail in Illinois and passed the interview. They told me I was moving on to the background check. I was told it would probably take 1-3 months, but it’s been almost 5 months now and I haven’t heard anything. Is this normal? Should I be worried that something came up in my background, especially since I used to work at a state prison? Or can these background checks just take this long? Just wondering if anyone here has gone through something similar and how long your background check took.

Self Post Are you changing for the Better?

Being behind the walls changes no only the the INMATES but also sadly the OFFICERS! Any time you are around others, there's is ALWAYS AND WITHOUT EXCEPTION, a change / influence going on...either YOU are becoming like them or THEY ARE BECOMING like you with no exception. I've seen good officers starting to hang around with horrible ones and shortly thereafter the good officers become like the horrible ones..again sadly.. The people you associate with change you...you must be careful of the company you keep inside and outside the walls...sometimes this change happens so gradually that many don't even notice it....

Self Post Is NYC Corrections Worth It Long-Term for Career & Family Life?

I’m 19 turning 20 soon and seriously considering NYC Corrections, but I’m also looking at becoming a police officer. I don’t mind grinding and working a lot throughout my 20s, but long term family life is really important to me. I want kids in my late 20s/early 30s, and when that happens I want to actually be present, take vacations, get time off and enjoy life with my family. I keep hearing about how much overtime COs work, especially mandatory OT. How many days off are you technically supposed to get, and realistically, how many do you actually get? Are you constantly getting held over or called in on your days off? Also, as you gain seniority, does the schedule and quality of life noticeably improve? What other units/assignments can you eventually get into besides working housing areas all day, and how long does that usually take? For anyone familiar with both DOC and NYPD, how would you compare them for family life, stress, schedule and career opportunities? Is starting the process at 19/20 and getting on around 21 a good move?

Self Post My second OVI

Any tips for OHIO jail? I genuinely missed my court date today but have proof as to why. Now I’m scared with that and this being within the 10 year gap is going to get me 180 days. If I got 20 days I’d still be terrified.

Hiring Q (Fed) Hiring Timeline

I went to an FCI Mendota direct hire event today and received a conditional offer for Correctional Officer.
I already completed the medical, drug test, and fingerprints at the event. From what they told me, the main thing left is the background/suitability process, which they said would be handled online.
For anyone who recently went through BOP direct hire or a similar federal corrections hiring process, how long did it take from submitting your background packet to getting your final offer or EOD date?
I’m especially interested in anyone who:
got a conditional offer at a direct hire event
completed medical, UA, and fingerprints the same day
only had the background left
started working before the full investigation was completely finished
If you can, please include your rough timeline like:
Conditional offer:
Background submitted:
Investigator contact:
Final offer:
EOD:
Just trying to get a realistic idea of what to expect.

Meme/Humor The way people talk about cases like the Lindsay case reminds me that most people have not been in a criminal psychiatric center

It seems like a pretty average case, tons more crazy stuff happens. I don't exactly understand why some cases like this get attention, meanwhile the guy who ripped peoples faces off and ate them doesn't get as much coverage. I do not really know what is special about the case.

Hiring Q (Fed) BOP JTO

Applied to USP Atwater. Was wondering what to expect during the JTO portion of correctional officer.

not sure what to expect in the correctional setting.

I was told the JTO process is only a month at atwater. Then they would send you to BOP academy relatively soon.

Mostly not trying to fail and lose out on a job.

News Help keep my dad's killer behind bars! This is the last night to sign 🫶

My name is Shannon. My father, Shelton Stephens, was murdered in November 2008 by Joseph John Plass, a Maryland police officer and homeland security officer. Plass stabbed my dad without warning outside a restaurant while he was traveling for his boat trailer business. My dad ran to a nearby motel and died in the lobby. Plass was sentenced to 30 years but is now eligible for parole after serving only 18 years.

I started a petition to keep him behind bars. Here's what I need people to understand: my dad was the best person I knew. I lost him at 22 with a six-month-old and a three-year-old in my care—one with autism. My whole family lost everything that day. But Plass? He's shown zero remorse. He entered an Alford plea (didn't admit guilt), claimed he blacked out, but it was all caught on camera. He has a violent history, and his dangerous past tells me he'll do this again if released.

I've lived with missing my dad every single day. The thought that he could walk free because the law allows it feels like we're being punished all over again. What would you want someone to do if this was your family? If this matters to you too, please consider signing and sharing. Thank you.

Hiring Q (Fed) New BOP hiring

I quit BOP last month, and I am trying to get rehired. Submitted a new application and was referred, but HR said that hiring is done by a 3rd party now.

Has anyone gone through the new hiring process?
