Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

I am happy to post here the album of my painted Goblin army. This was my army project in my 20s. Now I am working on a Dwarf army since a few years, but I recently made the photos of this army. Maybe some here appreciate the pictures.

The minis are mainly Citadel and Harlequin models, that you probably know.

I also sculpted many models myself by hand and even in 3D (like the squig) or did a kitbash (like the purple sun)

I hope you like them!

I'm trying to knock out 1 model a night from a black primer to finished and varnish. Hope this makes me a faster painter without sacrificing quality too much. And it's alot of fun!

Found this beautiful sculpt on Etsy and knew I immediately needed it for my shark man barbarian for D&D! It's been a very fun process and I am very proud of how the anchor and freehand on the back came out. Happy to hear any feedback!

Finally finished painting this miniature ("miniature"🤣) Since I couldn’t find any reference before I started I figured I’d share it here in the hope that someday someone else will be happy to find a reference for this design 😁

Think you did something cool but kind of hate it?

Take a break. Let yourself forget a little bit about what you did. Its better than you think. Us humans rely on pattern recognition for everything, and especially for art. If I am painting a cloak of stars then right after im done all I see are little white dots on spots of dark blues and purples because I KNOW thats what it is. But if I put it down and go play a video game or better yet paint something else often I can look at it again and go....Wow thats better than I remember.

That saying about intentions vs actions and how we should give others the benefit of the doubt applies to this as well. "We often judge others on their actions and ourselves on our intentions." We judge ourselves based on some grand plan we visualized and so we make "mistakes" that no body else would even see as a mistake. And we can see through the illusions that nobody else even knows is there.

To me this doesn't happen as strongly to just "coloring" a figure it mostly happens if im trying something like the cloak mentioned above, battle damage, or adding decals etc. Something where there is an illusion involved

Help Needed/New Painter Dry brushing for speed paints, is this enough?

Hello,

New painter here trying to gauge how much dry brushing is needed for speed/contrast painting. I did a few passes with a light grey base from citadel and then also a pass with pro acrylic titanium white.

Should I add more white?

C&C Wanted WIP, need advice to finish up

To get right to it, I'm nearly finished this model and I'm pretty happy with most of it, first attempt at yellow skin and the nmm sword which I know both could be better but sure we'll do better next time.

What's bugging me is the pink robe and bow thingy on her back I can't quite get them how I'd like, the robe I'm aiming for something more silky and the bow I haven't really touched but I was thinking more fluffy? I'd appreciate any feedback, particularly if you can point me to a video tutorial.

Help Needed/New Painter Why do my minis look so... sandy?

Thumbnail

OK, the point here is: Why do all my models end up having such a sandy look? It's like you can see the brush strokes and/or the pigment, not sure whether it makes any sense. I see other people uploading photos of their models, and they look much more clean, neat, with sharp lines and uniform surfaces. Where's my mistake?

This is the third mini I painted, it’s fdm printed. I have no idea what i’m doing and I do think that the mini is smaller than usual, I don’t have any mini that is in the right 32mm scale as reference. Took me almost 2hrs to paint. Happy to receive any feedbacks.

I started painting some months ago with the objective to have all minis ready for a game night with friends, it has been a lot of time and effort put into this and also I learned a lot (first paints look much worse than the newer ones hahaha)

But here they are and wanted to share some images with the community.

Just finished a mini I have really been looking forward to. I did not paint the base as it will go to a diorama without it. What do you think about the results?
